On the Golden Years reaction video, I made a comment about David's cocaine addiction and his wife Angie. Here, he had just gotten clean by moving to Berlin with Iggy Pop. He recorded the albums Low and Heroes there in 1977, as well as two records with Iggy called The Idiot and Lust for Life. They were all released that year. This song is from Heroes, and it's speculated to be about Angie visiting Berlin. David seemed afraid to confront her, and with good reason, because she's generally a cold person by all accounts. He was afraid of relapsing and blacking out, which could've happened if she had exposed him to the life he had been living. When they divorced around this time, he took custody of their son Zowie, later named Duncan. David told interviewers the song is about a real electrical blackout, but the lyrics definitely seem more personal. Bowie was a master of diversion. I love this performance a lot. This song is one of the really obscure numbers, and often overlooked. I don't generally recommend live performances for Bowie, but you made a great call on this one. The studio version has very aggressive vocal effects on it. This version is incredible, and I appreciate you having this experience. Keep up the great work! ❤
You're gonna love this. The lead guitarist here was Adrian Belew from The Mothers of Invention. David recruited him near the end of one of Frank Zappa's tours. They went to a restaurant to seal the deal, but Frank and The Mothers were there. They caught David red-handed. He sat down with them, and the only thing Frank said to David the whole time was "F*** you, Captain Tom", a reference to Major Tom from David's biggest song Space Oddity. He was really upset. 😅
There are several Bowie songs chronologically dissecting his marriage, before this 'be my wife' (turmoil) and 'Golden years' (denial perhaps?) And a couple of tracks before that when things were better. Well, guess everyone has a different interpretation
Wow! In some way first I was disappointed that you have chosen a life version. But I´m pretty surprised how good this life version is. Thank you for that!!
Finally --- one of his great underrated songs. It is one of the songs that is not heard enough.

Also she basically turned up uninvited, crashed the studio sessions which lead to a hospitalisation
I was there and it was brilliant.
