This was fascinating to watch. BTS was making a pretty bold statement in this song Baepsae. I'm super impressed that they had the balls do it. Their political and social conscience continues to amaze me.

One thing you also need to consider is the time when they released this song. It was when they were still on the verge of breaking in the US - 2016, before they were even nominated for their first American award - BBMA 2017. They were still small, compared to the major kpop idol players in Korea. This song was a B-side, unpromoted, but very much embraced whole heartedly by ARMY because of its message. BTS was fighting for their career at that time and was experiencing suppression from the big companies and the fans of those huge kpop idols.
At that time, they were just trying to work hard despite the situation they were in. They were also literally fighting the system and ARMY was therefore inspired to fight hard with them.
At their concert tour at that time (2016-2017), NOT TODAY was a call to fight and win and Baepsae was the sarcastic commentary, although it was huge fun to watch.
And because ARMY got a taste of winning if we work hard together, we were able to break BTS into the US market, which resulted to the belated acknowledgement in Korea when those in the entertainment power can no longer ignore the prestige they bring home.

And actually now that you've heard and understand Baepsae, you may remember that in Dope, RM's verse talked about giving up? Giving up on 3? giving up on 5? No? I'd rather give up at 6, I like 6. It's actually going back to this song, and ironically talking about all the things his generation have had to sacrifice just to be able to live. Which is very fitting, seeing as Dope is, ultimately, at it's core, a motivational song.
Also, now you should listen to and read the lyrics to Not Today, the crow-tit lyric will make SOOO much more sense now.
Finally, just 1 point, if you watch the choreo to Baepsae, BTS literally have a move that's basically like... well... you'll see. XD there's no questioning at all, that's they are giving a big old, politically correct, and insanely catchy "F U" to the boomers LOL
Am I Wrong is another political song. Arguably, even more risky than Baepsae, seeing as it has lyrics that are in direct response to an actual political issue in South Korea.

@@k-poppinwithfallon2593 The brief summary is, in 2016, the south korean minister of Education (EDUCATION of all things) was out having drinks with some reporters, running his mouth off. Saying that 99% of his country's people are all too dumb and lazy to ever move up in life and should be treated like dogs and pigs - just fed and kept alive. He also then continued to make several racist comments (or I guess he thought they were statements) about latinos and black people. Anyway. It became a trending topic on social media in South Korea. But the fact that this guy said all this, isn't even the biggest problem. It's the fact that what he's saying was unfortunately the underlying truth of the extremely class-ist, and caste-based system of Korean society. Anyway, the best article I've found about it is here: www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/opinion/2019/10/673_209805.html
BTS' lyrics in Am I Wrong, and specifically, RM and Suga''s verses uses this politician's words, right back at him, sayings sure, we're dogs, and pigs. We're dogs because of anger at the injustice. the rest of the lyrics lament the insanity that what is known to be corrupt and wrong, but is accepted as the norm. This is why I'd argue Am I Wrong is actually more political than Baepsae.

What you said when it's not the smartest move and etc, your right, bts could get possibly in trouble and backlashed, but they continue to stand up for what's right. And yes they use the term ok boomer over there too but while yes they have similaries to us here its actually more intense there due to the culture of your elders ALWAYS being correct and having to be respectful to them and by elders that applies to not only family/ elderly but work and regular life too, and again while we have things called interns what they are referring to isnt interns really they are actually hired like that so its different and the reason this song is considered highly political is more or less these are things that they shouldnt say since its expected for them to just keep quite and do what they are told but our boys ha they always speak their minds even if it gets banned from being played

It's also the same in France. I'm a student and same age with Jimin and V and here is how I feel about this matter. The worse is that even if you would like to fight this system, you gotta bear with it if you want to live in society. And depending on your situation and how much you must conform to survive, some people (who could be allies) diss you for being whether too conformist, or not enough. I wish instead of letting this system divid us we could all fight it together, even if the way we fight is different. (Also sorry for being political but I think that this "big international conspiracy" is mainly capitalism.)

That song gives a slap of sense to the youth, they talk about some things the youth is doing wrong in today's century, which is phenomenal because since they are part of the youth as well they make songs like baepsae that stands up to the right of their generation, but it surprised me how they also talk about what wrongs today's youth are doing as well in spinebreaker and realising it as they are today's generations youth too.

First of all, i wanna thank you for appreciating and showing love to our boys! They deserve the world. Second, as i said under another reaction video of yours, money as well as ownership are very important and serious matters in Korea. It's very important to have bought a property of your own, a house, an apartment, cars, and not having them on leasing, paying for them monthly years and years till you retire. That's why all of the members quickly invested their money into property, most of them bought more than one, all in cash. Jin and Jungkook have cars of their own. I'm not sure about the other members. I think Hoseok has a car too. Most of the members are already living in their own homes not in the dorm. My point is as much as they criticize Korean society and system, they have also materialized the fear and the need to secure their life and future following the exact same pattern of their society. This is not a criticism towards them, it's a reminder that whatever you say or do, you tend to unconsciously materialize things related to your background. The same goes with Korean society's expectations about getting married and have children at a certain age. Be sure, most of them would fulfill these expectations too. And it's gonna be sooner than you think.

You are legitimately the only reactor I’ve ever seen point out that the crisis the boys’ are talking about is everywhere. That’s part of the reason BTS has become so big. They’ve always talked about their experiences growing up and it’s all things that end up being universal to our generation.

And this is what differentiates BTS from everybody else. You just don’t listen to bops. Their music is always something more and you’ll get blown away everytime. Hope you get to watch more of DKDKtv explanations of BTS songs, like SPINE BREAKER and DDAENG.

I was like you, I realized from this song that it is a world problem for the younger generations. I myself am a Boomer yet I agree completely; I just don't know what can be done other than help out our kids as much as possible. I think that BTS might the best means to spread this message and encourage the youth to figure out a better different path. BTS has been a shining beacon to me, their music, their dance, their beauty, their personalities, and their messages. YOU are very articulate and I will be happy to subscribe and watch your other reviews. Also, is this not one of their best choreos?!! thanks to j-hope!

Baepsae is not their only song with catchy beat but deep meaning, dt. Anpanman, go go, am i wrong also had catchy bop-able sounds yet deep, deep, meaning. Have fun on ur journey through bts' discography!

Well they have one song 'Am I wrong' in wings album and it directs to political issues in the year 2016. There's a former chief of the Education Ministry's policy made an offensive remark saying, “The public people are like dogs and pigs.”
Then this song, there's Suga's lyrics pertaining to his remarks “We’re all dogs and pigs, we’re so mad we turn into dogs. A war between the big and the small errday. This crazy world yea makes us crazy. Now scream mayday mayday.” And that time many amazed their bravery and afraid they get banned on music shows but I remember Suga says "I never dissed anyone specifically. If someone feels targeted, then it’s their problem" lmao That's why I really like this boys.

They always hit you with deep and powerful lyrics on fun beats. Baepsae, Spine Breaker, GoGo, Anpanman, to name a few. All are heavy and powerful lyrics criticizing society and politics and even our mindsets, yet they’re all fun beats with fun and goofy dances (or fun and hot in Baepsae’s case)

Baepsae was the "ok boomer" of it's time before the term "ok boomer" even existed lolol
Honestly tho this song was so controversial when it came out that ARMYs were scared it would be censored. It was performed only once during their promotion period of their album and even then their stage wasn't decorated as it usually was (compared to their fire and save me perfs). We were even shocked it was even approved to be aired xD

I always enjoy their deep meanings and social commentary. On top of the meaning of the words, it's almost like all the hip thrusting is like a big "f you" to the system that is suppressing them (and enjoyable for us at the same time)....well played BTS

In every album BTS includes a song that diverges from the concept of the album and instead focuses on a social phenomenon that BTS wants to talk about, and just like Baepsae with each album BTS gets more and more bold but tbh they’ve been calling out corruption in society (extremely blatantly) literally since their debut
I just love that they put more stock in speaking up about injustices the they see over the fear that by making such a song broadcasting companies or just people in power (in general) will block them in some way

Baepsae, spring day, ddaeng, and spine breaker explanation videos made a big impact and led to my changing opinion of BTS. Prior to these explanation videos, I was only impressed by their dancing and nothing more. I thought their videos and lyrics were just random, weird, K-pop thing. I probably would not have delved further into the group and their songs if it weren't for these explanations by Koreans, knowing about their alternate universe, or getting to the members.

Yeah, with their CEO's support they fight the system and try very hard to make things right. They've experienced so much injustice yet they never thought of just playing along to survive. Instead, they worked hard and showed their sincerity in everything they do. Now that they are huge, they didn't stop giving it their best and continue to speak for the small and powerless in society most specially in the music industry. In an award show when they made their award acceptance speech, Jin and RM bravely (but politely) called out to those practicing 'sajaegi' (chart manipulation) and wished that small but talented songwriters be properly acknowledged and respected. They wished that the mistakes of the 2010's will not be repeated in this new decade and that everyone will honestly make good music for the people to enjoy listening to.
