The battery installation in South Australia was a bit of an ememrgency and Tesla stepped in and offered to build it in 100 days or it was free (if my memory serves aright).

Replacing emergency diesel generators with salt water flow batteries sounds like just the thing for hospitals and telecommunications facilities.
Way quieter, and much less flammable material storage

As much of a fan of flow batteries as I am, some would call me a fanboy, Lithium & soon Sodium ion batteries big advantage is fast response time.
They can respond in fractions of a second.
It won't be an either/or situation, it will be an AND situation as both fast response AND cheaper longer duration storage will be needed.

Energy density is a fairly minor factor in residential/grid storage. It does matter to a point. Maybe once its an order or two in magnitude less than the density of lithium ion it starts to be a consideration. For many of us, a couple power walls might power a home, but something the size of a 20' shipping container would still be preferable if it did the same thing at half the cost.

For home battery storage clearly mass or volumetric high energy density are far less important than in mobile situations like cars or phones. What DOES matter a lot is endurance (temporal and cycle durability AND especially round-trip efficiency. The 90% round trip efficiency in a powerwall is a lot better than the 70% to 80% of a vanadium flow battery or iron redox salt batteries. I think w
hen looking at batteries the round trip losses are an important aspect to cover.

I absolutely loved the sewage treatment video! Very strange statement but it was so interesting and exciting really that there is so much potential in our waste!

Perhaps I've have missed it but I would love to hear Matt talk about AI, the good and bad. We can always count on Matt for a clear-eyed view.

Idea for video. 5th generation district heating. Examples include Drake landing solar community Calgary Canada,( solar and geothermal). Whisper valley master planned community, Travis county, Texas. (heat pumps and geothermal). There are several in Europe.
Using waste heat from electric generation. Holland MI. heats their streets in the winter and heats Municipal buildings. Copenhagen Denmark burns garbage and recycles waste heat to warm over 100,000 homes.
I have no information on costs for these projects.

This is the first time I have seen you guys. Nice little find. Just a quick word to note to you too... saltwater batteries or not new and I use them currently from a company called Aquion. Yes the company is now out of business but they still work great. You can discharge them down to 90% dod. There are other companies that use them as well. Good luck.

Hi Brian, I just read your comment and would like to know if you can share a bit more about your setup; kWh, cost, when you got it (and if there's any kind of warranty or redirected maintenance), discharge rates, life expectancy, etc
I learned about Aquion a while back but not in time to get my hands on one of their batteries. Do you know if there's any alternative option?
      Thanks in advance!

Hey, some of us in the US South have A/C that could burn through 100kWh of electricity in a day. Bring on the big batteries. That said, my 14.9kW system is sized where I couldn't fill up. My best net export day might be 55-60kWh.

It's not that uncommon to be out of power for weeks.
Granted most of the people I know who've experienced weeks without power are rural.
But not all. My ex worked with the power company and often went on storm damage. Sometimes out of state
The worst was probably the ice storm the hit Little Rock Arkansas and surrounding areas about 20 years ago.
It was worse than Houston TX.

I think the longest shortage I experienced in my city was a day and a half, and that's when the power station in my neighborhood caught fire.
The system was quickly rerouted and that was it. But you need a grid with redundancy and some margins for that to work.

You know, you can use salt water as part of an air conditioning system, to take humidity out of the air? Hmm, a partner is forming here. There is a new water purification technique that produces 100% clean water using sunlight. Hmm. Battery, cooling and water purification using salt water and sunlight!
