    For about 4 years all i threw was forehand. Didnt matter what kind of shot it was because thats the only thing i knew. I started watching your videos almost 3 months ago because i really wanted to start throwing backhand. I went and played the same course that the Oklahoma open was on (Blackhawk) in November 2018 and shot +10... Now thanks to your videos and massive amounts of practice, i knocked 13 strokes off my game at that park! My best score at Blackhawk is now -3.

    Great video, and something I struggle with regularly. My reachback always feels so forced and unnatural so it's rarely consistent. It's always awesome to have these pointers crop back up throughout your videos to keep it fresh. No competition without repetition.
    P.S. Don't let the haters get to you Danny! Rock the stache if that's what you want.

  • @drkevns
    @drkevns 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great video Danny.
    One hesitation I have for your drag strip example is that it implies that reaching back further can create more power. This might cause people to lean back to get a "deeper" reachback and will throw people off balance. I did this for a long time. Since you're lifting your torso back over your balance, it also can feel like you're smashing the disc. In reality, you're wasting energy getting your torso back upright. You should reach back by turning, not leaning.
    Don't think anything you said was wrong, just something people should be aware of.

    • @DannyLindahl
      @DannyLindahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm definitely not suggesting everyone use this as a mentality while throwing. I hope that came across in the video. This would be something I tell someone who's not reaching back at all or is having a hard time taking their eyes off the target.

    • @drkevns
      @drkevns 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously though, you hit on some of the biggest issues. One of the best videos I've seen from anyone on this topic.
      I like to think of my body like scissors to time my reachback. When my arm is moving back, my legs are opening to the last step. If you keep them connected, it makes it easier to time. Very difficult problems to fix though. Really can get engrained in muscle memory.

    • @drkevns
      @drkevns 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you didn't suggest it, but I see it a lot. People come from a good place in trying to get it way back for more power, but it's easy to really screw up your throw with it. Just something to be very cognizant of.
      Your torso should stay upright. You "reach" with your shoulder turn.
      Seabas22 calls it a "backswing" and not a "reachback" for exactly this reason.
      Again, great video.

    • @DannyLindahl
      @DannyLindahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drkevns Exactly. I was trying to emphasize that the leg and arm should offset and you should stay balanced. I wish I would have had a point in there on balance now that I think about it. I've thought about calling it a backswing but I think that might encourage people to rotate the disc around to get it behind them rather than move it straight back. Scissors is a great word to describe how it works...Can I steal that?

    • @drkevns
      @drkevns 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah of course. Scissors are also a great visual for showing how your entire body lowers to the ground in the last step, and illustrates how we use gravity to help speed up our throw. I made this gif last year when seabas22 and I were talking about balance.
      ibb.co/hCVHnp
      See how one "leg" of the scissor is out gliding to the brace as the "arm" reaches back at the same time?
      You can also see the center of mass (where the blades connect) lower into the brace. This is what I mean by using gravity to assist the throw. That downward momentum is power that is adding into your brace. More power comes from that than the "run up" which is why a good throw should be slow and smooth.

    one comment on "commited" reachback. I feel it's easy to confuse this as reaching back "really far," which is yet another way to rob yourself of distance as a far reachback where you actually start learning will inevitably rob your throw of speed.

    So many great players and huge throwers reach back high. It is very possible to reach back high, even above your head, and end up with a flat release! You could argue it’s less consistent, but I doubt Avery or Wiggins have serious nose up issues.

    • @DannyLindahl
      @DannyLindahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SirFlanery Avery reaches as high as I would recommend. And he compensates for it with an aggressive wrist angle. That wrist angle is something that’s hard for most players so I teach a low reachback and a more neutral wrist angle.

    • @SirFlanery
      @SirFlanery 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danny Lindahl I suppose so. I’ve seen Brinster use that same wrist action sometimes when he reaches back high. Did you see Linus Carlsson play at the Open last year? He had kind of a swoop and might have been throwing slightly nose up like Feldberg but he was crushing it! So smooth

    I feel like I can never get the timing right on my throws. I feel like I get the timing right on reachback, and when to release, but for the amount of force I put into it, it's like my disc doesn't glide like a good player's will. I have no idea how to explain it. It's almost like my weight transfer would be off, except it doesn't feel like it's that either.

    Danny, thank you so much for the time and effort you have put in your channel and to help others understand and grow in the sport. Your tips and recommendations have been extremely helpful.
    I don’t want to develop bad habit and have been following a drill I found not to long ago. I know your time is limited, but I was hoping you would review (perhaps on 2x speed if necessary, 10min video) the drills laid on in this video and let me know if they will create bad habits and muscle memory. The first drill begins at the 4 min. mark, prior to that is explaining the whys.
    Side request: Perhaps make a video with some drills that will assist with developing proper form and timing of the video below is incorrect or bad. Thanks again for all your content and creations.

    Man that mustache is terrible! J/K I can’t grow one to save my life either and my wife gives me grief for it, but I make up for it with my beard. But onto the important thing this is a great video! I watched one of your older videos around November and you were talking about nose down and dipping and I saw I was and fixed that by dropping my reachback. To around my diaphragm and it feels so much better and I’ve gotten the nose down and better distance but I’m curious with the wide and straight your talking about.
    With the straight or being wide from the body how far do we need the disc wide? Like a wide reachback like you see Nate Doss throw to generate more power?? I’ve heard and read about a wide reachback but when I do that I feel I don’t get into the power pocket fast and tend up missing way right but I’ve stopped doing that. So my I guess where I’m getting at is how far wide do we need to go if there is a general area?
    Hope it makes sense!

    • @DannyLindahl
      @DannyLindahl  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words! However, I do have to question your use of the word "either". I like Nate's reachback. As long as it's not around your body and you feel like you can pull it straight without deviating it's fine. Try the wall drill and see if that helps!
