  • 145 Alive - 2m mega net from Ben Macdui. the second highest summit in the UK
    Snow in September, cold killing batteries, windchill. We had it all!
    The production quality of this video is lower than my usual standards. I had to use a GoPro without wind mullfing, and even my phone at timed due to the main GoPro battery dying in the cold. I had a power bank, but it wouldn't connect.
    Hope you enjoy it anyway!

      @jaceharrisoncrowley I heard you 59 when I'd handed the net to another Op! However, you didn't make my log. Maybe propogation or you had something else to do. 😉

      @@theradiorover Thanks Fraser, I'm not unwell anymore, but very post-viral (I suppose it's just a case of regaining energy over time). Made a few contacts, mainly local, one or two who were just returning to the hobby after a couple of decades of being QRT! That was nice.🙂
      I'd made a light-weight portable yagi to take to my local trig-point, disappointed that I didn't get to use it, but there's always the next one.👍

    I love what you are doing, but I don't think I would be as brave to complete some of the challenges that you achieve. Watching your videos does make me feel that I need to get out and about when the better weather comes around. Superb contact from the Orkney Isles. Great video as usual.

      Thanks John! Sometimes I can take things to extremes, but I've been climbing Scottish mountains in all weather's for over 30 years. The radio just adds a bit of extra spice!
      Great to hear you want to get out and try some portable stuff. I had a peek at your qrz profile. You're well placed for many of the different portable programmes out there. I look forward to hearing how you get on.

      @@theradiorover Fantastic, thanks Fraser. I am joining the Telford and District Amateur Radio Society in mid January 2025. They have a few events coming up that I am looking forward to taking part in, including a camp out in Wales. This new radio hobby looks like a great way for us to get out and do some exploring. I will dip in and watch some of your back catalogue of videos. Take care - John M7JCZ.

      Cheers John. The ftm-400 is a lot lighter and with the remote head, I was able to angle it better. It's not robust enough for major portable use, but the ft-857d would have been overkill, as it was a 2m FM only day.

    • @theradiorover

      @adamap2796 👋
      It was a Zippy 8400mAh LiFePO4. I was running 40w. The battery weights 1kg, so not too heavy for a lot of capacity. It had 64% remaining after 90 mins up there.

    You didn't happen to bump into Neil Findlay the Bob Scot's bothy 'jannie' as you passed by perchance? Also, don't know about you but I've always found Derry Lodge rather creepy. Anyway, great vid. Well done. Oh, and what battery were you using for the 400? I want to take my Alinco DR735T into the backcountry here at some point. That also does 50W.

    • @theradiorover
      @theradiorover  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We saw a couple of different parties heading towards Linn of Dee as we rode in, but not sure if it was Neil.
      The battery is a Zippy LiFePO4 8400mAh. It's the largest battery I own and weighs 1kg.
      Derry Lodge was supposed to be getting converted to a hostel a few years back, but it never happened. They should probably demolish it.

    Nice adventure; do you carry spare Go Pro batteries or had you gone through them all? I have gone to the DJI Osmo 5 Action Camera for my handheld with the DJI Mic2 . I tried it out on a jet ski /POTA trip yesterday and it worked well. My audio was great, but next tie I need to put a mic by the radio speaker also! Ill probably get to Scotland in the next year or so maybe we can do and film a summit together. Bob

      @@theradiorover Great... i Need to keep my camera waterproof at present given the jet ski part of my videos hence why I went to the DJI camera and BT microphones; they work great. Two of them can be paired to one camera. Next time I will put one mic on me and clip one to the radio by the speaker.... I understand that media mod on the go pro and understand it makes replacing batteries sort of a pain.
