    It actually isn't recommended that the mom be separated from other females during pregnancy, birth, and care of the babies. I have never, ever heard of even someone claiming that guinea pig's harm the babies even if they aren't the mother. They actually HELP the mother and the babies, not harm. By separating the mother, you create stress because now she is all alone.

      Exactly. I'm a new breeder and I just got my first female about a month ago. I've had males since I was eight years old, and after careful consideration, I decided to get a female to breed. But I found out a few weeks ago, she's already pregnant from the place I got her from, not even from my male. I've been taking good care of her and she is very happy and healthy. The stats are definitely quite exaggerated and there really isn't much to worry about as long as you're professional and actually take good care of your pets

    You should not separate her (the female pregnant piggy) from others. I kept my female with her hubby (the unfixed male that impregnated her) until she started going into labor then removed him. While she is pregnant he can't impregnate her again so there's no need for separation. He was a very good boy and always looked after her. All pigs are different so always check on them. They love having eachother around especially if thats who and what they know.
    Separating her from her home and fellow companions can cause stress to your pregnant piggy. Keeping her with her companions, comfortable for as long as possible is the best for her. Obviously once in labor and giving birth - do not have any other pigs around. Just her and her new borns. . . But to change her home and take her away from her friend/friends is not cool. It's like you are punishing her (your piggy) for being pregnant. Like she has to be alone, when she doesn't have to be.
    I currently have a pregnant female with other females and she is super happy and healthy. :)
    Please care for your pigs properly and do your research! These babies are precious and deserve the best care.

      Guinea pigs handle each other well, only the boars around should be neutered. Else I'd also say they are too comfy with others around .. If they need some quiet space they go to a dark hidey.

    i'm sorry but i have to say that if no one was breeding guinea pigs, we wouldn't have them as pets...
    I do agree that it should be considered VERY carefully, and that breeding is not done for profit.... but we still need the responsible and skillful breeders.
    but to say that no one should EVER breed guinea pigs - well... someone bred YOUR pets as well, and you wouldn't consider not having them, would you?

    • @pigaroohq2732
      @pigaroohq2732  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The need for skillful breeders is needed, yes, but this video isn't for them. This video is for people who go to the pet store and come home with a pregnant guinea pig and don't know what to do. Additionally, the advice to never breed them is for the general public, not the 5% of people who actually know how to safely breed guinea pigs. Thank you for your input to the conversation! :)

    I got a guinea pig (Manila) from a pet store about a month ago, she was 3 months old at the time I got her, there was a male in the cage with her. I’ve noticed that she seems to weight more, I don’t handle her often because I respect her space, but when I try to she seems more annoyed than before. Her other sister seems to be more active than her too, I’ve also been changing their water a lot more often, their hay and food too. Since they seem to eat more and drink more than before. But then again Manila is still young and may need more food and water as she grows. So I really don’t know ?

    My guinea pig is 4 years old and shes pregnant. I'm so scared I love her so much and dont want her to die. Heres the story: we had 2 female guinea pigs and decided to get another one. We went to this small animal shop in the city. All the guinea pigs were mixed together so someone had to check their gender. A worker checked super quick but at the time we thought it was fine. We brought him(at this time we thought he was a girl) and put him in the cage with the 2 other piggies. We named this pig turnip. Turnip kinda seemed to bother the other pigs at first, but we didnt think anything of it because our other 2 piggies are 4 and 6 and hes pretty young. 5 months later, one of our friends had a pregnant Guinea pig and we noticed one of our guinea pigs sort of looked like that (pregnant). We figured out that turnip wasn't just playing, turnip was humping her. This was a shock to us, especially considering how old she is. It is now February and we found out she was pregnant in mid December. She still hasnt had her babies and I'm starting to get worried. If anyone has any advice or anything please reply. I have no clue what to do and I want the best for my piggie.

    My sister got 2 female guinea pigs from a friend of hers. I told my sister I would take both because they are a bonded pair. My sister gave one to another friend of hers then brought her back. While she was with her friend, they put her with the male they had. Now I'm not sure if she is pregnant. They claim the male didn't get to her back but I'm worried that he did and they r lying. The female is starting to get a little rounder. How will ik for sure if she pregnant or is just gaining weight because I'm feeding her a proper diet. They have never really eaten veggies or fruits.

    • @trashcan_clikkie6225
      @trashcan_clikkie6225 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do not give them back to the friend. Don't risk impregnating her at all. She may just be gaining weight from the diet but if she shows signs such as extreme laziness and eating LOTS, she may be pregnant. Just handle her gently and give her fresh food, veggies, and hay every day along with clean water. Good luck 😊

    • @raquelsolis9824
      @raquelsolis9824 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will not give them back. I have a male but they r not or never will be put in the same cage. My sister gave me the male and she wanted to take him back but I refused because all they want to do is breed them and I will not allow it. I've been giving fresh veggies daily and hay. I have the dates set up for when she might give birth if she is and planning on making things as comfortable as possible for her when and if she delivers

    Its better to rescue guinea pigs that are already here than to breed. Especially because breeding has potential risks. My female got pregnant because I was told I was given two boys, I love the babies and I kept everyone healthy as possible but I'm lucky to have all healthy little ones and a healthy mom, it's sad to hear about people who purposefully breed and then the mom and babies are unwell due to a lack of education about how to properly care for them.

  • @budgiebreeding

    a LOT of this info is just wrong. NEVER isolate a pregnant female, guinea pigs left together will actually co-parent. guinea pigs don't attack or kill their own offspring, not even the males, although that was one correct point, remove the male before the babies are born. the rest of the info, including those wildly incorrect stats, is framing pregnancy as a pathology, instead of a natural process. the vast majority of guinea pigs give birth without a hitch. the one issue is that a female MUST be bred before she is 7 months old or her pelvis will be unable to expand to let the babies out. so never try to breed a fully adult female unless you know for a fact that she is under 7 months old.

    Yes thank you!!! Someone said it. Keep the bore AWAY from the mother and babies. God I had a horror story when I was little and I even had read it in a book to keep males from the babies as they often eat them or fight them in adolescents. My mom put the last baby with the male.. they both died. 🥺

      @@ranjushaps6212 You should keep the baby boy with his mother until he is 3 weeks old, after that, he has to be separated. If he is kept with his mother after the 3 weeks he can impregnate her.

    but Gunie not to worry about that , thanks.

    What? Separating guinea pigs from each other is not good at all. When you put her away, she's stressed, she doesn't know what's going on, and she's scared. In extreme cases, the guinea pig may miscarry due to separation from others. Not because he stays with them. The other females calm her down and help her with childbirth. Plus, the statics aren't right. I've had ten females in my life, they all gave birth and they all survived.
    Sorry for my English, I'm not a native speaker, but I had to comment because some of the information in this video are nonsense.
