    Hi Winston. Currently in Shenzhen from Australia. Thankyou for another awesome video. One of the best things I did was to buy a daily 24h subway pass (25 Yuan) (several in one go, it activates on first use). Allows so much flexibility. My trip initially was just Beijing and HK until I stumbled across your videos. The whole trip was a spontaneous affair (had leave booked already and a cheap airfare came up to Beijing). Must admit I was stressed coming by myself but your videos have helped me.
    Had trouble on first couple of days in Shenzhen. No one could tell me where to get the airport shuttle bus line 2 to Luohu (several exit show pictures of a bus some mention shuttle bus). I then tried green and red taxi and they both refused (had chinese address written down). I'd read something about the expansion of the MTR and thought surely I could get out via MTR. A lovely customer service officer helped me get the right train. Called hotel from MTR asking which exit but they didn't have booking. Another awesome bright as a button, full of personality MTR customer service lady, fluent in english helped me (I'd gotten off at huangbeiling instead of huaqiang North). By the way I think I fell in love. I asked her if I could recommend her to her boss and she said maybe I could come back and visit her. I was so stressed that it didn't sink in until the train was leaving and she was waving enthusiastically through the window. I didn't get her photo or her name but I'm determined to find her (update: I now have her photo as when I went back there was a photo display of the customer service officers, how lucky). Got to the hotel and they realised I'd written down the huaqiangbei address instead of the Luohu branch of their hotel. The arranged a taxi and 20 min later at hotel (4.5 Hours after landing). Headache, a bit car sick from taxi, dehydrated I then threw up in the toilet. On the up and up now. Sorry for the long story.

    Just want to thank to for opening my eyes into what china is like, went to beijing for a few days on the way to Sydney two years ago and it felt very surreal and depressing (although I enjoyed it), unfortunately this made me think the whole of China was the same. Looking at Shenzhen has helped me see a more lenient side to China. Thanks

    Dongmen is worth a look if you like people watching or want to pick up some knickknacks to bring home. I have found most things not unique to China are exported to and less expensive in the USA. If you don't like crowded places and lots of shopping/ like a big mall, then you will probably hate Dongmen

    Some corrections/add-ons of the vid:
    1. It is NOT so-called "cheap" shops selling "cheap" and "fake" products, not by a long shot. If non-cheap and non-fake products to you mean exclusively Armani, Prada and RL Polo alikes, then perhaps 99% of the entire planet earth are selling "cheap"and "fake" products including most of shops in the US and UK. A considerable amount of things sold in DongMen actually have pricings (after bargaining) more or less comparable to the TOP Shop chain of the UK - one of the most recognisable brands for the young in the UK high streets. So, is the UK or Oxford Street where the Topshop HQed also selling "cheap" and "fake" products thus? The fact is that they are not cheap at all (e.g. 25RMB non-brabded T-shirt, about $4, is not cheap even in world's standard for any non-Armani, non-HugoBoss/ RL Polo T-shirt). They are just non-(biggie name)branded products.
    2. Dongmen=LaoJie. It started >25years ago as CHEAP area for temporarary small shops in the middle of a construction site. When it rained, Laojie looked like after-earthquack disaster zone. 90% customers of Dongmen were the 20+ immigrant workers - probably similar to today. Back then it was usually cheap, e.g. 10 RMB 2-piece suit - yes, weable suit and not bad either. The rent there, however, were never cheap, e.g. any temporary tiny shop space (there were 1,000s of it) the size of 3mX4m costed about 10,000 RMB rent at a time - that's USD 1,000 - yes, price of 25 years ago. Was that cheap? That price tag could get you a month-rent of a even bigger shop space in the centre of Paris!
    3. Laojie's so-called "cheap" electronics come from Huajiangbei - the world's largest electronics retail/wholesale site, which btw also supplies the majority of world's consumer wholesale market, AND most of world's defence contractor market as well - many of its " cheap" products being "the stable food" for defence sectors of even Russia, some of them even making their way right thru to the Pantagon-US military contractors... dunno why they are called "cheap". Guess only the likes such as Hugo Boss or Armani - enabled computer electronics are not considered cheap nowadays? So-called "cheap" is an urban myth!
    4. the Dongmen McD was the 1st McD in China mainland, and its BBQ-styled Fried Squid Stew is argueablely the "grand daddy" of all fried squid stews you can find in China today. Yes, the legendary fried squid stews started from right there in some temporary stands in Dongmen about 25 years ago, before being quickly spreaded to Canton, Beijing, Shanghai and the rest of all China.

      In Chinese you very often refer the direction/district of a city with the word 门/gate, but it does not mean that it was the precise location of the ancient city gate or anything. U this every where. People in many cities use 门/gate to refer to that side of the city.

    • @cactusinmonkeyforest4967
      @cactusinmonkeyforest4967 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      江康 After Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore in 1978, he decided that the Singaporean model of making use of capitalism was the way to go, to lift China out of utter poverty. Shenzhen was the first city (at that time a village of about 30,000 people) to be developed. In the years that followed, China sent tens of thousands of their civil servants to Singapore to find out (learn) how Singapore did it. So, I think it would be fair to say that Shenzhen is like Singapore. In his southern tour, Deng told the Chinese "Open up! Learn from the world, and especially, from Singapore. And do better than them!" LOL!
      It's interesting that while Shenzhen was chosen as a test bed for capitalism with Chinese characteristics because of its proximity to Hong Kong, it looks nothing like Hong Kong. With lots of greenery and high rise buildings, it does look far more like Singapore. Lacking historical sites like other parts of China, Shenzhen created its own attractions like Windows of the World, Splendid China, Minghua in SeaWorld, etc...etc...the very same things which a young country like Singapore also did. LOL!

My comment was by no means an attempt at nationalist sentiment and, if I am wrong in what I said, I will wholeheartedly admit to it after personal research. You started a hate war and are trying to unbury the hatchet on such a contentious subject as the relationship between Turkey and Greece for no good reason. Peace, brother. No thank you for fake goods. There is an universal saying in both Chinese and Western, "You pay for what you get." Jewelry made in China was known for excessive Cadmium, which is "poisonous" if kids put them in the mouth. Also, knocked off electronic gadgets could cause fire or other problems which probably costed a lot more potentially than saving a few dollars. Some of my friends living in the Mainland are so wary of the food, they would keep a close watch on the butcher just so that they wouldn't switch their cuts of meats with something else. No wonder they will have 'day-travelers' going to Hong Kong to get all of sundries, medicines and baby formulas at least 4 times a day and selling them back at the black markets at Shenzhen.

    I have been in many of these types of malls and the first thing that came to my mind was God help you if there was a fire or some other disaster, There are no direct routes out. Exits not marked. Made me very uncomfortable being in them..

    I like your work and I agree with all you say and do, but I have noticed that just as in the west, every entity build plots to fit the top 80 and then replicate. everything you have shown here is 99.999% the same as in Guangzhou, as in Chengdu, as in Shenzhen, as in China and as of lately Arlington Texas USA,(Hong Kong Market)(V-Land) and as in BKK.

    Asia is filled with Starbucks, but I rarely see them having any customers. How on earth are they still here... Drug dealing? Human trafficking? Spies for the CIA? Must be something because they sure aren't making money from selling coffee or food.
