It helps for video when you'd like to use a shutter duration of 1/60 and that leaves you with few aperture options, or possibly it doesn't provide sufficient range to get a proper exposure.

Also, when I tried to free up space by moving files to my laptop over the USB C connection, copying seems to be rather slow. Also I could copy or record, not both at the same time.

Hi there! Thanks for you video :) When Im on video, the Iso buttom doesn't react, I cannot switch it to manual. Works on photo mode normally. how to fix it ? Thx :)
Excellent video, this video really helped me to understand a lot about this camera so thank you for taking the time to make the video. I really really really thought about what camera i wanted to get and the Z30 just seemed to be ahead of the rest. However after watching a lot of videos about this camera and deciding to buy the Z30 i have to say that there are a few things that really disappointed me, the biggest thing is the almost criminal battery life. I am getting literally about 20 minutes of video recoding on what i would argue are standard settings (1080p 60fps) anything better than that and the recording time halves. I have looked at dummy batteries, but i dont want the thought that i could damage the camera. I have looked at external power packs and i think that these will help, but again, this is another extra cost on top of the price of the camera i have just paid. The AF is bad. I have looked at the many settings and i have watched more videos and i just cant seem to get the camera to focus on anything closer than 5 or 6 inches from the lenses, no matter what i do its not focusing, i am hoping that this is my fault and just something that i am missing in the settings, but if it is, its hidden really well. One last thing that i noticed with my camera and this might be an issue with just my unit, but the camera battery indicator light does not turn off when the battery is fully charged. This means that i have to just charge the camera battery for hours, or basically over charge the battery (the battery takes many hours to charge) and hope that the battery is fully charged, obviously this is not good for the life of the battery.
Right. Whether it's lenses, cards, ND filters or more hard drives for storage, there will obviously be more costs than the camera. For battery life, unless you want to invest in several batteries, buy one good external USB-C PD (power delivery type) and connect it to the USB-C port. I would not worry about battery life if it remains plugged in after it's fully charged. I'm certain that Nikon's firmware manages that. As for AF - please check the focus capabilities of your lens - 5-6" is closer than most lenses are capable of focussing. If you need closer (or are looking for a larger view of your subject) try a macro lens. As you correctly observe, there is no perfect camera.
As I returned the camera to Nikon after the review, I'm not in a position to do that. While it might not be my first choice for video production, it should be fine. I generally recommend that you use the highest quailty settings, shutter duration of 1/60 and the lowest possible ISO - underexpose slightly (about 1 stop). Do a custom white balance using a gray (or white) card and get as many of your colour adjustments done in camera to avoid doing them in post where the low bit rate will otherwise create artifacts as you make more than the most minor adjustments. Hope this helps.
I love listening to you! Quick question, you don't mention how many stops on the ND filter, what do you recommend for those of us who don't want to pop for a variable one?
Hey thanks for the guide, my pictures seem blurry after uploading from SnapBridge to my iPhone any tips? When I zoom in it doesn’t look sharp am using standard lens.
How do I get zoom to stay on. When I take photo it goes back to standard. Have enjoyed the z 30. But so much to still learn. Thank you for your video. It has helped. Regards Charlie.
@@MaartenHeilbron Sorry 4 late reply. Just using standard lense that came with camera. Am enjoying the camera. Just want to use correctly. Have watched your video again. Thank u 4 all advise so far. RESPECTS and GRATATUDE. Charlie.
While a camera that doesn’t have a shutter curtain when it’s turned off may be considered inferior, it’s really a Sony issue as their sensors seem to be dust magnets. While you should always be prudent while changing lenses, I would not be unduly concerned about this.
You can colour grade from any mode - neutral or flat profiles are good starting modes for any model of any camera. The trick is not to start with a setting that requires you to undo some things in order to return to a neutral starting point. However, in my experience, sometimes I'd prefer to start with a colour profile that provides a little more colour saturation, as it's much easier to tone it down than to increase it. Final note - have a colour chart, even if it's a small and inexpensive one handy if you're planning to grade, and capture it in the scene at the start of each take.
greetings from the UK and thanks for the Vid - I'm looking for a 'go anywhere' camera and this seems to fit the bill when I don't want to lug a D500 around.
Hi I am in P mode have zebra on when I turned the dial to reduce exposure nothing happened is there another button I need to press and hold or something to make that work
Get the subject as close to the camera as possible, keep the distance between the subject and the background as large as possible. Zoom in as far as you can, use the largest aperture available. In my time with the Z30, I found this very difficult in smaller inside spaces like my studio.
So I’ve recently purchased this camera as my first camera. I only have the 16-50 kit lens, what is a good all around lens that’s not going to break the bank? I could really use some advice or direction.
@@MaartenHeilbron if possible I’d like to take photos from a further distance. I’m just now learning the lower the number the further the image is when I close settings I believe that’s how it goes. But I’d like to take photos from afar like certain things I can get too close up on the zoo. I apologize if I’m not explaining this correctly.
Understood. In lenses, a larger mm will get you closer to a far-away subject. In less expensive lenses that will come at the expensive of the size of the widest aperture, which means you'll either need to be taking photos in well lit situations or use a higher ISO with grainier images. The DX50-250mm, which has an aperture of F6.3 at its furthest might be your best (reasonably priced) solution. Otherwise, you'll end up buying an FX lens, which is likely overkill for this camera.
Just got my Z30. Wondering what is the best / safest way to charge the battery while traveling? So far have just used the included cord to connect to my laptop. But I won't be taking the laptop on vacation ... Is it OK to use a phone/ipad charger, and if so, what strength (5amp, 20 amp?)
I'm not an engineer, nor do I have a relationship with Nikon. However, from my understanding, any charger (battery or wall plug) that has a USB-C output will be compatible. For full confidence, look for one that supports PD (power delivery).
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks. It appears my iPad charger is PD capable- so I’ll try that today. I got a bundle with their creator kit & was hoping that would include a charger. You’d think for $900 that one of the bundles would include a simple $20 wall charger!
Te: shutter change has more consequences. In default settings while taking a video shutter acts as a focus assistant, if you make this change, the shutter doesn’t work like that, it switched the focus to manual. Not terrible solution if you prefer it.
@@MaartenHeilbronok, you suggested that for convenience you can enable the still photo shutter to start video recording when In the video mode, correct? You no longer need to press the red-marked video recording. Prior to the change, when you half-press the main shutter, it enables the focus function, correct? after the suggested change, that function is not available. The only way is to use the manual focus. Try it.
Thanks for providing the additional context. In video mode, using continuous focus there should be no need to press the shutter to focus. The AF-On key is also available to request focus in place of the shutter key.
Sir need help, its my first camera and i took photos in nef, now when I open this picture it opens as i had taken them but sec later a black shades comes up, everything becomes little darker
you are my new favorite youtuber. That was an amazing video. you are so good at keeping me interested. love it!. Anywho, did you have any issues charging it? i am having a hell of a time keeping the damn thing charged. I am using the ubs cable it came with, and a fast usb port on my Dell R11 pc to use this as a streaming camera (1 of many jobs it now has) and i cant keep the thing charged. I have tried wall outlets with different cables and the charging light wont even come on ... 😥
Yes, it's a small battery that loses charge quickly - my largest complaint was that it looks full for a long time and then suddenly it's drained. If you're having trouble keeping it running when connected to power, you may need to get a PD*-specific USB adapter, charger or external battery instead of using a port on your computer. Also, thanks very much for your kind words. *PD = power delivery
The USB A to USB C wire that came with it didn't seem to work for me, but it just plugged in the USB-C wire that's normally for my MacBook and it charged fast. For your needs, you might buy a 2 pack of batteries with double charger
Is that little dude small enough to replace a point and shoot camera like my canon g7x mkii? I’d love a small camera that I can pocket. Though if its as big (or heavy) as the zfc then I’ll take the zfc as its rather pretty 🤩
I think it's a little larger (don't have them side by side) Check Nikon's specs for details. Otherwise, it's a good small light choice. Full review soon.
Sir, I'm looking to level up my wild life photography skills especially birding and planning to buy Z30 and budget constrained. Would you recommend this camera? If yes, please suggest some good zoom lenses which fits this one. Thanks in advance, Prasanth
Although the Z30 is capable, you'll be better served by a Z6II or Sony A7-4. For both the 70-200 F2.8 lenses are excellent, but you may also want a longer reach for some situations.
I would not recommend this camera to an aspiring TH-camr. I would recommend creating videos with whatever camera (or phone) is at hand until the needs for better equipment arise. And while this camera might be suitable, the kit lens is not.
I downloaded Snapbridge. How do you get it to auto-download? It seems like I need to switch to Nikon wifi each time, but auto sync as I take photos would be ideal
I am using a Nikon z30 to cover events but everytime I use it with an external mic the audio sounds really awful! What am I doing wrong? Is it the mic or a setting on the camera??
You've really not given me enough information to assist you. What is the mic? How is it connected to the camera? What are you recording? Can you be more specific than "awful"?
@ okay my bad. I cover concerts and stage shows. Mic is the microphone. But I think I found what the problem was since I wrote this. The attenuator was disabled. What I meant was whenever I go to a stage show and record footage, there is always a distorting sound when I’m listening back to the clip. So I was asking which would be the best microphone to use with a Nikon z30 to cover clips in loud surroundings.
I meant which mic are you using. If audio is loud, the attenuator can help. It can also be helpful to display the meters and turn down the recording level.
The 4K video quality here is suitable for most purposes (streaming services like Netflix have standards this camera does not meet). I'm not sure how big your screen is, but you should be fine. Remember that quality video is not just dependent on the resolution, but also on the lens and the lighting.
Hiya, I'm pretty sure it did say you can but just to confirm... You are able to transfer videos/photos straight to you phone from your camera right? Thanks anyone who answers :)

Cold shoe? Every time I mention my older Zeiss cameras have a cold shoe, people look at my like there's an arm growing out of my forehead. Speaking of classics..... in my humble opinion, Nikon should gracefully bow out before it loses face completely. The Z30 is no D850, nor an F4s for that matter. Regards Maarten!
Nikon did an emergency fix by not setting the best image quality to avoid that the camera shuts down due to overheating. The overheating problem unfortunately renders the camera unusable for me, because 25 minutes of operation time is just not enough for my purposes.
Ak si nemôžete dovoliť Z6, potom je Z50 lepšou voľbou. Full frame by som odporučil hlavne preto, že existuje širšia ponuka FX objektívov a sú oveľa kvalitnejšie ako limitované a nekvalitné DX objektívy.
You say to up the frame rate to the highest but don't explain how much space it will use up. And call us 'cheap skates' for not doing so. And use sales words like ... STOP... Change these settings NOW!
I didn't say that. I said to use a frame rate of 30fps. You were concerned about quality and weren't a cheap skate when you bought the camera, don't give up on quality and be a cheap skate when buying memory cards.
Most small cameras will overheat under those conditions. If you need to increase the recording time beyond that, I recommend you purchase an external recorder, which will also create better quality easier to edit recordings.

You are so welcome! What a pleasure to read your kind words.
Thank u for such detailed info.
Rumours around are that z30 has heating issue?
Rumour or fact? Nearly all small cameras have serious overheating issues with 4K video - the Z30 is no exception.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thx Maarten. Yes, this is what i have read about all 4k budget cameras.
These are great tips. Thank you for this video. Would love to see more.
Thanks, appreciate the kind words. My full review should be done in a few days.
Hi there!
Thanks for you video :)
When Im on video, the Iso buttom doesn't react, I cannot switch it to manual. Works on photo mode normally.
how to fix it ? Thx :)
Switch to the camera's manual exposure mode for video.
Wau, what a great channel. Love how you presented Nikon Z 30. Thank you so much. 🧡
It's my pleasure, thanks for your kind words.
Can you make a video on preference setting for video? I currently have a z30 and am thinking to use it for video? Would you recommend this?
Three is usually sufficient, but five is sometimes needed.
Truly amazing video! Very informative.
Thanks for your kind words, they are appreciated!
Man this is exactly what I needed 🎯🎯🎯💯💯💯
Always nice to know my videos are useful and appreciated. Thank you.
Yesss I was wondering why it wouldn’t record video!!!! But it is cuz as you said “couldn’t find the record button!!!”
I hope the problem is fixed now.
@@MaartenHeilbron yes haha I was freaking out that it wouldn’t record !!! You saved the day
Hey thanks for the guide, my pictures seem blurry after uploading from SnapBridge to my iPhone any tips? When I zoom in it doesn’t look sharp am using standard lens.
Is the lens properly attached? Are you using autofocus?
How do I get zoom to stay on. When I take photo it goes back to standard. Have enjoyed the z 30. But so much to still learn. Thank you for your video. It has helped. Regards Charlie.
Thanks for your kind words. Which lens are you using?
@@MaartenHeilbron Sorry 4 late reply. Just using standard lense that came with camera. Am enjoying the camera. Just want to use correctly. Have watched your video again. Thank u 4 all advise so far. RESPECTS and GRATATUDE. Charlie.
Very informative. Best among the rest. Thank you Sir.
So nice of you to post your kind comments, thanks!
Thanks for te great tips - why dont Nikon tell us these things? Thank goodness you did!
I wouldn’t fault them, they’re just making the camera neutral.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! Thank you so much ☺️
You are so welcome! Thanks for your kind words.
Really helpful, appreciate this very much 👏
Glad to hear it! Always a pleasure to read kind words.
It seem their is no shutter curtain when You change lenses? Is this not a problem? Dust?
While a camera that doesn’t have a shutter curtain when it’s turned off may be considered inferior, it’s really a Sony issue as their sensors seem to be dust magnets. While you should always be prudent while changing lenses, I would not be unduly concerned about this.
Thanks for the great content...Does the new Nikon Z30 support clean HDMI output?
Yes, and only clean. There's no info overlay output in video mode (which makes it harder for me to create my videos).
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you so much... But I do wonder if the Nikon Z50 had the same behavior. I see that behavior as being a bit of a pain!!
it is a pain, but one that seems to be the norm for Nikon mirrorless models.
Hello! I just bough the camera and found your video helpful. I inserted my card into the camera but it's not saving any. Any help would be appreciated
I would need a great deal more information. Your problem could be as simple as the write protect slider on the card has been enabled.
I want to get this camera, but im wondering if the lenses i have for my old D5000 work on this camera. Thanks.
You will need an adapter. Nikon FTZ adapter is a good option. However, there will be lesser performance than when native Z lenses are used.
Hi, is there any color grading video mode? Like log profile? Or can we do it manually?
Sounds like a good plan. Enjoy your travels.
Hi I am in P mode have zebra on when I turned the dial to reduce exposure nothing happened is there another button I need to press and hold or something to make that work
Zebra will be most helpful if you are using manual settings. Which setting are you changing with the dial?
@@MaartenHeilbron I’m on P mode
Good explanation 👌👏👏
Always nice to know I've satisfied my viewers.
Thank you for the video :) How to set up nice background blur when you record in-house?
Get the subject as close to the camera as possible, keep the distance between the subject and the background as large as possible. Zoom in as far as you can, use the largest aperture available.
In my time with the Z30, I found this very difficult in smaller inside spaces like my studio.
Excellent tips. Thanks so much
Always nice to read that viewers appreciate my videos, thanks!!
So I’ve recently purchased this camera as my first camera. I only have the 16-50 kit lens, what is a good all around lens that’s not going to break the bank? I could really use some advice or direction.
The 16-50 seems like a good all-around lens. In which way do you feel it's not providing the results you want?
@@MaartenHeilbron thank you very much!!!! I appreciate the gems of knowledge I will look into that DX lens, I really appreciate your help.
As many of us now have more chargers than we need, and more and more wall plates have USB ports, I think it's no longer necessary to include them.
Te: shutter change has more consequences. In default settings while taking a video shutter acts as a focus assistant, if you make this change, the shutter doesn’t work like that, it switched the focus to manual. Not terrible solution if you prefer it.
I’m not following your comment. What shutter setting causes the focus setting to switch to manual?
@@MaartenHeilbronok, you suggested that for convenience you can enable the still photo shutter to start video recording when In the video mode, correct? You no longer need to press the red-marked video recording. Prior to the change, when you half-press the main shutter, it enables the focus function, correct? after the suggested change, that function is not available. The only way is to use the manual focus. Try it.
Thanks for providing the additional context. In video mode, using continuous focus there should be no need to press the shutter to focus. The AF-On key is also available to request focus in place of the shutter key.
You are so interesting to watch😊

Sir need help, its my first camera and i took photos in nef, now when I open this picture it opens as i had taken them but sec later a black shades comes up, everything becomes little darker
Which software are you using? Use the controls in the app to adjust the brightness to your preference.
you are my new favorite youtuber.
Very helpful, thank you

Thanks in advance,
Prasanth
Although the Z30 is capable, you'll be better served by a Z6II or Sony A7-4. For both the 70-200 F2.8 lenses are excellent, but you may also want a longer reach for some situations.
Thanks for the informative video. A 600 page manual implies a wide variety of features. Hope you do a features video.
I will try - they're in a hurry to get it back for other reviewers.
As a content creator yourself, someone this camera is marketed to, does it meet your needs? Would an aspiring TH-camr benefit from this camera?
I would not recommend this camera to an aspiring TH-camr. I would recommend creating videos with whatever camera (or phone) is at hand until the needs for better equipment arise. And while this camera might be suitable, the kit lens is not.
you are the best mate.
You are very kind, thanks!
I downloaded Snapbridge. How do you get it to auto-download? It seems like I need to switch to Nikon wifi each time, but auto sync as I take photos would be ideal
I'm using an Android Google Pixel 6 Pro, if it matters
Sorry, I can't help - I returned the camera to Nikon after the review, so can't check what settings might be appropriate for this. Try Google.
@ okay thank you.
Thank you! Very helpful.
Always nice to know my videos are useful and appreciated.
Can i shot shoot shortfilm on Nikon Z30 and telecast on big screen i have fear that quality will not be that good for big screen share your opinion
The 4K video quality here is suitable for most purposes (streaming services like Netflix have standards this camera does not meet). I'm not sure how big your screen is, but you should be fine. Remember that quality video is not just dependent on the resolution, but also on the lens and the lighting.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thank you so much i am using Z30 with 24mm 1.7 expecting to telecast on mini theatre and expected screen size is 40-50 feet
Although it depends greatly on your production values, the quality will not be worse than any other 4K content projected to that screen.
Sir can I pause video while recording
You can stop and start - not sure what different it would make to "pause".
Hiya, I'm pretty sure it did say you can but just to confirm... You are able to transfer videos/photos straight to you phone from your camera right? Thanks anyone who answers :)
Yes, using the free Nikon app, but it can be slightly flakey. th-cam.com/video/aoNMhmLOaQ0/w-d-xo.html

It's not trying to be either of those. It's an affordable and lightweight camera that creates images of very high quality.
Nikon did an emergency fix by not setting the best image quality to avoid that the camera shuts down due to overheating. The overheating problem unfortunately renders the camera unusable for me, because 25 minutes of operation time is just not enough for my purposes.
I don't think that the resolution of still images and overheating are related. Overheating is primarily a video issue.
Bravo
I appreciate your kind word, thanks!
ako amater mam dilemu na vyber Z30 alebo Z50? ktory si vybrat ? Dakujem
😮😮😮😮
Thanks for your kind emojis.
The camera when you take 4K video for more than 40 minutes continuously, stopes recording and you have to wait to get cold. Problem !
Most small cameras will overheat under those conditions. If you need to increase the recording time beyond that, I recommend you purchase an external recorder, which will also create better quality easier to edit recordings.
