    "When you use the M mode the camera is taking advantage of you." What an interesting and unique way of thinking about this. I'm sure few people have ever thought about the setting like that... at least I haven't. ;-) Great upload, nice to see you back Maarten!

    I've learned a lot about photography by intentionally using manual mode, however from a practical perspective, if I'm just taking pictures of stuff I use P. I use Av if I want to make sure I can blur the background (or NOT blur the background). I use S mode if I want to take a picture of something and be sure to freeze the motion (or NOT freeze it).
    I only ever use M mode when I'm doing studio photography with external flashes. (I could use TTL flashes but I don't have any at the moment.) Set the shutter to sync speed, set the aperture to what I want, and then there's no way the camera will change the exposure unless I do something to change it.

    I have found that I like the mode dial on the Fujifilm X-H2S, especially the custom settings.

    I use Manual Mode for off-camera flash, and also when using auto exposure compensation would give constantly differing results, eg. in shooting against the light source.

    I started my photography journey with aperture-priority and worked my way toward fully manual so I have a difficult time whenever I try to P. Thank you for this video, Maarten.

    I'm mostly on manual mode. The problem I find with my my camera Sony a6500 is that it overblows the highlights to manage the shadows. It doesn't handle very well a situation with both highlights and shadows. I don't know whether this issue persists in crop sensor cameras or my unit or it'd be handled very well by a full frame one. Anyhow, I'm the most comfortable at shooting in manual mode.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  ปีที่แล้ว

      Understood. Have you tried the "highlight" exposure meter mode? That might help the auto settings get closer to your preferred exposure.
      Sensor size does not have an impact on exposure in my experience.
      I will note that under-exposing slightly does have the benefit of improved colour reproduction.

    I generally choose the most automatic option available. However, when I'm doing something fussy, such as sunsets and fireworks, I just use manual. It is so much quicker than searching through the specialty modes. It isn't a bad idea to remember "Sunny 16" either. Old experience has a place in a new world of AI driven everything everywhere.

    Interesting thanks for sharing. I have some compact cameras that only have P mode and no Manual mode this is great to know. Also helps with controlling the iso so it's not too low or too high when taking snaps.

    Having lived happily in the DSLR world for a long time, I don’t think I can honestly report ever having shot a frame in “P” mode. Ironically, I will say my “mirrorless journey” and a new learning curve begin this week as a new Z8 should arrive on my doorstep in the next couple of days. However, I think I will now say, instead, “a new camera is set to start taking advantage of me”…I’m looking forward to being abused…🤪 Thank you.
