The song was originally supposed to be a single for Kenny. While in a session with Barry and Kenny, Kenny wasn't satisfied with the product, it needed more. Barry suggested it be a duet, and that he felt that only one woman could make the song special, and suggested Dolly Parton. This rest is history for Kenny, Dolly, Barry and the BeeGees.
Deborah Robertson - Barry was a great songwriter but so was Robin and he always got the shaft. This song was cowritten by Robin and Barry as were 90% of their songs and Robin wrote alone or with Maurice like on his solo albums. Look at the credits on their songs including songs like Islands in the Stream - credited to R and B Gibb! Barry wrote in the early 60's because the twins were still kids but Robin and Maurice soon wrote great songs too. Robin primarily wrote Massachusetts, I started a joke, My world, I can't see nobody, Saved by the bell, Close another door, etc. and cowrote their 60's hits with Barry. Maurice did the orchestrating and perfected the third harmony. On most songs all three were credited because all contributed to the finished product. It's a shame to me that Barry gets all the credit when the other two are dead. The deserve equal recognition as two thirds of the Bee Gees.
Thank you Chad for reacting to "Islands". It is one of my favorites from back in 1983. For years & years I had no idea it was a Bee Gees song. I have since listened to all of the songs from the album "Eyes That See in the Dark" The Bee Gees wrote the entire album, and all of the songs are amazing. Even the demos that the Bee Gees offered to Kenny Rogers are amazing in quality. Hope you will look into more from that album.
The beegees in my opinion was the best group in history they wrote some amazing songs also you should do some grace vanderwaal reactions she is an amazing singer songwriter.
They, Kenny and Dolly thru the years became the Best of Friends!! Platonic to the end, I believe, but, yes, their chemistry was great!!! In his last days, their friendship still was so awesome!!!
Actually the genius bee gees wrote the whole album for Kenny Rogers ( Eyes that see in the dark ) which included this song . The album includes many great songs like ( This woman ) ( you and I ) ( Evening Star ) ( living with you ) .
Remarkable, right? I've watched many reactions to this song and always everyone is blown away--and rightly so. Thanks for reacting to one of my very favorite videos! I never tire of this one--and I'm not even a fan of country music. (Oh, and if you're wondering why Dolly apologized, she had just stepped on Kenny's foot.) :)
Yep, another hit penned by The Bee Gees. They started writing quite a bit for others after the disco backlash. And I think every song turned into a hit!
Correction! This is a KENNY and DOLLY song from 1983......WRITTEN by the BeeGees for Kenny, who didn't really like it UNTIL Barry and/or Kenny said they need Dolly for it to work! CLASSIC.
Islands in the Stream was originally written in an R&B style, intended for someone else, but not recorded (Maurice recalled it being for Marvin Gaye, Barry recalled it for Dianna Ross). When Barry was co-producing Kenny’s album, they reworked it for Kenny. After 3 days of singing it, Kenny decided he didn’t like it. Barry said it needed Dolly Parton, who neither of them knew well & didn’t even know if she was in the state (CA). Kenny’s manager was in the room, said he’d seen her earlier that day & had her #. She was called & to everyone’s surprise, came right over (Kenny said within an hour). Kenny said, “she came marching into the room, & once she came in & started singing, the song was never the same. It took on a personality of its own.” It hit #1 on 3 charts (Hot 100, Country & Contemporary), was Certified Platinum & in 2005 topped CMT's poll of best country duets of all time, plus began their lifelong friendship. Not bad for 1 song.
Barry also produced it. Just a side note, they were originally recording this as a solo number for Kenny's album, and Kenny was getting tired of rehearsing it, going over it, etc. and he told Barry "you know I don't really like this song, I don't want to do it anymore." And Barry said "you know what we need? We need Dolly Parton." And they were lucky enough to actually get her. I don't know if you read posts from reactions this old, but just a thought, it would be nice if, when you pause a video to react, to back it up just a little before restarting. Thanks, loving the channel, I just discovered it a week or so ago.
Just a technical observation: Dolly Parton and the band changed key at the same moment. This is very difficult to do. Usually the band provides several measures in the new key to lead the singer in.
Great song , bee gees could do anything.,💞💞💞. Listen to. ( What kind of fool). Live. Barry Gibb & Barbra striesand. Beautiful song. Bee gees wrote it. ,😍😍😍
Chad check out the album Eyes that see in he dark, by Kenny. I was written mostly by Barry and Barry and Mo, Buried Treasure was written by the three brothers. Barry Produced it. You can also find Barry's demo tapes he made for Kenny out on you tube. I really like Barry's demo of Buried Treasure, though Kenny seemed to follow Barry's lead and sung it like him, still great Kenny tune. I also like the Eyes that see in the Dark demo and Kenny's version.
Hey Chad, especially Barry often did Country. The song "A Soldiers Son" was given to Blue Grass star Ricky Skaggs, a few years ago. Ricky wanted to do it with him in a duett and Barry dit it. Also Country were the songs "The Lord", "Sweetheart", "Don't Forget To Remember Me", all from the "Cucumber-Castle"-Album from 1970. On the Flipside of "Too Much Heaven", given from them 1979 to Unicef, you can hear their "Rest Your Love On Me", which is such a gem. Was later on covered by Olivia Newton John in a duett with Andy Gibb.
I try not to say this to loud around my family. But as much as I have always love Kenny & Dolly's version of this song, I still prefer the BeeGees version. It was good to get that out in a safe environment. Seriously, don't tell my family. Those people are certifiable!!! LOL
Yes indeed they did and to their credit they could produce a three part harmony, whereas Kenny and Dolly , only two part which worked wonderfully in its own right
The fact that dolly sang this speaks to her accessment of her knowing a good song. She wrote and still writes thousands of songs. She wrote Whitney Houston’s bodyguard movie soundtrack I will always love you. She had a country hit with it. Then, Whitney does a rock ballad with it for the movie. Dolly said she made more off that song than all her songs combined. Kenny, too also knew the value of athe song as he wrote the gambler and collabedi with artist like Lionel Richie. But, The Bee Gees crossed over many genres of music to write for scads of artist. This also made them have the most no. 1 hits with their no. 1 hits and the people they wrote for. Tho Barry led the group producer wise all three were multi instrumentalist and producers too. Barry produced two of Barbara Streisand’s albums.
I grew up listening to the music of Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstandt, John Prime, Neil Young, Johnny Cash and so many country music greats. But my most favorite is Emmy Lou Harris. Of course, I also listened to the Bee Gees, Beatles, ABBA, and many others. You're right. So many gifted singers and amazing bands in that era.
I watched an interview of Dolly and Kenny from about 15 -20 yrs ago. The interviewer asked them if they ever did actually have an affair during the course of their decades long singing partnership. Dolly without hesitation answered, no, they never even considered it; adding that, she has been married to her husband for 40+ years, at the time of the interview. Without missing a beat; Kenny interjected as if for the sake of accuracy, that "it" was an unrequited.....love....or ..affair...I forgot which one he used to describe whatever "it" was that remained unrequited. I feel that he loved her romantically. His ex wife actually addressed the rumours, following Kenny's death, and stated that she never felt that he had been unfaithful to her with Dolly, during their marriage; but added that it's possible they an affair between them had occurred, since Dolly had once mentioned, in a joking demeanor, that she "thinks like a man".
Please react to the 1974 original version of I will Always Love You. Please react to the live 1974 version of it by dolly Parton on the Porter Wagoner Show. Whitney Houston covered the song. Most people think it was Whitney Houstons song.
See how a bit less gravellly Kenny is? Don’t know if Lady was when he was much older, maybe sick, maybe just the end of the concert worn out. But agreed on all points. Fun fact: Besides having Billy Ray Cyrus for a father, Miley Cyrus’ Godmother is Dolly Parton! 😀

Another great song written by the Bee Gees!!
Kenny tried recording this alone & it wasn’t going so good.
Barry Gibb, who was producing Kenny’s album, suggested bringing in Dolly.
The Bee Gees produced it and sang back-up! Fantastic all around!
I could watch Dolly and Kenny sing this together a million times a day !!!!!!

Kenny and Dolly great performers and this was one of their best. The Bee Gees wrote it.
The Bee Gees have written more top 10 songs than anyone in history.
I so love this song.. My all time favorite duet.
This song topped the the country chart for along time , and it was chosen as the best country song of the year
I'm from the same town as Dolly Parton she's the real thing bless her heart ♥️
