I love the sound of the K5LA. The first time I heard one was back in 1978 when I was riding on Amtraks National Limited train from Pittsburgh Pa to New York City and the train had the F40PH locomotives
Sounds a lot like the k5s that CSX had on there SD50s when I hired out. And many other older units they had running around. It's also cool how the sound changes as he approaches and departs the camera.
As a kid in the 90’s watching CSX in my area, I remember this horn on the SD70’s, and C-80-8’s coal trains. It was an ear ringer for sure lol. Definitely grabbed your attention, if you weren’t ready for it!
@@TheHornKing The prices for these things have prevented me from getting into the hobby....but I appreciate you sharing info and showing how it's done. It sounds so good!!
That horn is one of the few that can make a grown man cry. As a child growing up in the 90s, Amtrak and MBTA F40s sounded so similar to this. Nowadays, good luck finding this sound on a passenger railroad!
Man that sounds good! Sounds quite similar to NH 2011 on the Cape Cod Central. It has an 80’s K5 but it has a tagless manifold and mid to late 80’s narrow font back caps. Not sure if the 5 is a small or big bore though.

I grew up on the Connecticut coast watching AEM-7s equipped with this horn. This sound brings back so many great memories.
This horn has godlike sound harmonics

That echo is insane! This is definitely a beautiful sounding K5LA!
(4:11) I love the way it sounds when it’s far away
When the #5 is loud like that, it will really get your attention when your in a car or something, which is a good thing. Nice horn!!

Beautiful! That just screams 80’s!
Went to the kissle fair and they had a k5la on the Swiss ride with the international flags on top
This sounds like a horn audio I would have to put in my game lol.
Nice looking K5LA and nice smooth sound!🛤🚂
The great sounds of Amtrak in the 90s
What awesome echos!!
Sounds like what Amtrak put on they’re P40DCs
Great Video!
that gave me chills holy sheesh
Doesn't get any better than that for a K5LA. Really nice work! Was this a long time in the making since you selected each bell by hand?
Thanks man and yea this horn was a fairly lengthy project. Got another buddy of mine that has helped source the parts for this horn over time as well

Hey Dillon, I’m looking to buy a K5LA 80’s big bore. Do you have anything like that to sell? I really like your “hand-picked” set.
Thanks man and at the moment I don’t unfortunately

I'd like to buy that horn!
What happened to recording near that building? I feel it helped give more detail when the horn would go off.
Still at the same spot. That’s where all the echos are coming from
@@TheHornKing oh, I did not know that lol. But it still sounds a little muffled, when the camera was up closer you could hear it better in detail.
My question is where do you find these horns or parts I’ve been looking around for some 80s and corker k5LAs
Where do I buy stuff like this
thats a screamer fr
sounds like an F40
Looks like this horn might’ve belonged to 510 trackside. I can tell the 3A is ex Amtrak, and the 3A isn’t that dominant.
This one was a custom build from the ground up.
@@TheHornKing Sounds sweet!
