Don Mattingly! Class Act! One of the greatest Yankees to ever put on the pinstripes! Classic swing and what a glove!! The Hall of Fame means nothing if a guy like Don isn't there!!!
I loved Mattingly. He was so clutch, so professional and just so consistent. There were times, you could look at the field and the best glove out there was on first base. It sucks that the pitching never came together to win him a ring. I absolutely hated baseball in 94. The only reason I came back to watch 95 was because of Don and it all ended in the playoffs with Seattle. It breaks my heart that arguably the best Yankee from the post-Reggie era will not get into Cooperstown. At least he's where it matters to me, Monument Hall.
As a kid back then in nyc we all idolized that man. I honestly don’t think any players in recent times had that kind of impact on a generation of youngsters. It was partly because the Yankees after decades straight of being consistently one of mlbs best teams completely sucked for a decade straight. Mattingly was the only bright spot to get excited about most of the time. Secondly it was a much different time long before computers and smart phones so kids played outside most of the day. Playing baseball or having a catch with your friends was the most entertaining thing you could do for most of us. A lot of the neighborhood kids would get together and play wiffle ball or stick ball in the street or baseball at a near by field almost everyday. Which resulted in almost kid living near by all joining in and falling in love with the game. Practically all of us wanted to be like Donnie baseball... the man was a god in nyc back then
Mattingly proved if willing to work extremely hard you do not have to have the ideal athletic frame to be a good baseball player, he maximized the most out of his short arms, short legs, long lean torso, and extremely narrow droopy shoulders to being a solid major leaguer during his career.
Other than McGriff, who easily would have been a hall of famer with just 7 more homers, nobody had their hall of fame shot hurt more than Matt I got by the strike. That 94 Yankees team looked like a serious contender and if he had a ring, I think he would have gotten in by now. We all saw what he could do in October in 95, imagine what leading the Yankees to a title in 94 would have meant for his legacy and his shot at induction. His credentials would be MVP, best player for five year stretch, second greatest defensively at his position AND the guy who lead the Yankees out of their title drought? That would have gotten him in I think.
I went to the last game of the season Don Mattingly and Dave Winfield for the batting title can't recall who won.Yet DM won the batting title 6 GS in one season still a record 7 hrs in a row tie Dale long hr per day
It was 8 games in a row I believe. And 6 Grand Slams season. And Mattingly won that batting title! Funny thing is he never hit a GS before or after. His only 6
Whatever happened to Mattingly towards the last 5-6 years ? He was one of my favorites early on, I missed the tail end of his career. I heard he was not on the HOF , so I looked up his stats and he fell way off. Anyone know why? No disrespect to him but at one time he was insane!
@@jefffinney4233 Ok that's the story behind his drop off . Yeah I remember he was like my 2nd Favorite Player and around 94 I dropped off. I didn't realize his career slowed down so much. In the mid 80's I remember he was insane hitter And with the glove. Him & Boggs was My two after Rod Carew Retired
My all time favorite ball player #23 Donnie Baseball....crazy thing about that awesome 87 season he had those 6 grand slams were the only ones he hit for his whole career & of course if not for the back issues he's a first ballot Hall of Famer....imo he should still be in there.

Mattingly, Strawberry, Gooden, and LT were the biggest sports stars in NY during the 1980s.

In the dark decade in Yankees history there was one shining star Donny Baseball!

I’m reading this and thinking “Dang, if only I were left-handed and worked extremely hard I could have played first base for the Yankees”

Back issues. Never hit for power after that. Unfortunate…still think he’s a HOF’er.
Hurt his back wrestling around in clubhouse. Never got over it . He was putting up crazy #s until then

Hey MLB Vault really enjoy this content could you Do Joe Carter highlights somtime in the near future
Don Mattingly should be in the HOF!!!!!
And he should’ve won another mvp but somehow Clemens got it
Only thing greater than his bat...was his moustache
and that eye black.🙂
The world series literally went out of its way to avoid mattingly as much as possible.....
Mattingly did all? Really? No world series ring. He retired then they got their ring. Kinda sad.
