I shave with an antique Gillette (1905). Somehow it's amazing that 113 years later, I can still buy the blades. And it still shaves perfectly.

You ARE the Mad Scientist! Last year I bought a vintage Gillette open comb, single ring wi!th the sharp pointed teeth. I was excited to try it, but had to put it away after the first week because of the lack of energy due to blood loss. Although I covered my eyes, I peeked through my fingers to watch as you casually picked up the old razor and zip - zop, first pass clean as a whistle. Then you did it TWICE more! This morning I stood looking at mine and cranked up my courage to try it again. Although being very slow, cautious and watching the attack angle, I ended up with numerous nicks, especially in the chin area where curves are numerous. I think it's going to end up in the drawer. I've been shaving for over 50 years and tomorrow I'm going back to an old Super Speed. Thank you for the history and proving a clean shave with the early Gillettes can be done!

My grandfather shaved with a gillette old type with the ball end handle. He had ground the teeth off the guard, they call it a DEvette nowa days, i remember he sometimes wouldn't shave for a couple of months, then break that bad boy out and take the whole beard down in one pass. I still have it and use it from time to time but I still haven't gotten the hang of shaving against the grain with it so I use it on my first pass and then clean up with the mach 3. Great video by the way, very informative.

"Give away the razor and sell the blades" This motto lives in many marketing products today.

I love razor history and Gillette was a key players in that history. Modern shaving really started with Gillette as the invention of a successful safety razor that changed it all. Gillette combined successful marketing with quality products to make their niche. They gained an admirable repuation

Great videos! Can't wait for more Gillette history. One tip tho, put your hand behind the razor to help the camera focus better when you are trying to show smaller details.

Great Video, John! Really enjoyed it! What a pity, market imperatives have killed the mass produced Gillette DE . Still, the renaissance is out there with well crafted alternatives that shave as well as the classic Gillettes and creates opportunities for small business guys to "get a shot at the brass ring" and make a living. Add these to offerings from still established manufacturers and cheaper alternatives out of Asia and you have a pretty good choice or equipment and software out there now. It's a great time to be a wet shaver.

surprised there's no mention of the abc pocket editions, contracted by gillette. i know those were made during that same early timeframe, too
the abc pocket edition is one of my absolute favorite razors. i use mine often

Good morning John! Thank you for another quality video. The history of Gillette is interesting and your style is super informative. Those older Gillette razors shave nice with a modern carbon or stainless blade, but I wonder what the experience was like with the original 3 hole blades? I shaved with a carbon blade the other day, a 1961 Gillette thin blade, and it was far harsh and it tugged. I did try a 1958 Gillette Super Blue blade as well. The Blue blade delivered a nicer shave. Thank you again John.

The German razor you have mentioned its Hoffritz/Merkur which is copy of Gillette New type but the Merkur much smoother shaver than Gillette.
