Joannie Rochette at the 2010 Olympics, 2 days after her mom passed away, winning bronze, should've been the top one on this list, and she wasn't even mentioned? Seriously Mojo? How do you, as a Canadian owned channel, completely forget one of the most emotional performances in Canadian sports history?
Honorable mentions: 1. Buster Douglas. He did the unthinkable and defeated Mike Tyson for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship 23 days after the death of his mother from a stroke. 2. Houston Comets. They won their third consecutive title in the 1999 WNBA Championship less than a month after their teammate Kim Perrot died of lung cancer.
@hozedYT Oops. I'm wrong. James Raymond Jordan Sr. died on July 23, 1993. But it was still a month after the 93 Finals which were from the 9th to the 20th of June.
These athletes who have lost a family member have strength to move forward. Grief comes and goes, but it made you realize tomorrow is never promising and to enjoy life with the people you love
Where is buster douglas on the list?? That man lost his mama almost got knocked out in the first round then beat iron mike Tyson for the heavyweight championship.
100%. It's a bit deeper than that, even. The odds makers had Douglas as a 42 - 1 underdog. Meaning his KO over a prime Tyson is arguably the greatest upset in modern sporting history.
The first major sporting event following 9/11 wasn’t the Mets/Braves game, it was the MBNA Cal Ripken Jr 400 NASCAR race at Dover. Dale Earnhardt Jr won and drove around the track holding a large American flag in tribute.
I remember watching Martin St. Louis when he played college pucks at the University of Vermont and played against my home team (Clarkson University) when they were in the ECAC. He was phenomenal even then, and I’m glad he was able to have an amazing career in the NHL, including a Stanley Cup when he went up against Potsdam, NY’s very own Craig Conroy and the Calgary Flames in 2004. His story about this 2014 game still inspires me to this day.
How is Joannie Rochette not on this list!? She lost her mom to a heart attack two days before her short program during the 2010 Olympics, and then had to skate two clean programs. She won bronze.
And to think, this channel is run IN CANADA, BY CANADIANS and they left Joannie off the list. I have a cold heart and don't get emotional very often, and even I burst out crying like a baby when Joannie did what she did.
Joannie Rochette’s (Canadian figure skater) mom passed away a day or two suddenly before she competed in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. She still competed and won a bronze medal, for her Mom.
Have you heard of the Adelaide Crows? They’re an Australian Rules football team whose coach, Phil Walsh, was murdered by his son. It was only his first season as a senior coach. Their game in that upcoming round was cancelled, but I’m pretty sure they won their first game back after it happened
One that was missed was ex Afl player Jason McCartney who returned for a final game 8 months after being severly burnt and injured after the Bali Bombings. That was very emotional.
I remember watching the game in which the Marlins had a tribute for Jose Fernandez on MLB Network in 2016 when it happened the day prior and I saw the press conference of the Florida governor and the Florida department of transportation CEO talking about the accident and I literally broke down in tears when I saw it because I thought about his family and how they'll never be the same afterwards and of course the Marlins had canceled the game scheduled to be played that day and I always remember where I was because it was one of the worst things to ever happen to any of the teams that I root for.
I was on my way home from something when my brother told me about Jose Fernandez’s death. If Fernandez was still alive, he’d be a great asset to the Marlins. Here’s hoping he finds peace in the afterlife.
In high school, Chris Paul’s grandfather died at 61 years old so his next basketball game, he was at 60 points and got fouled on a shot attempt, made the first free throw and intentionally air balled the second to honor him and then sat on the bench the rest of the game.
Can't forget about Michael Jordan even though his dad died three years before he won his fourth championship on Father's Day he played on and won that championship and was visibly emotional afterwards that pops in my head
Ben Crenshaw winning the '95 Masters after losing his mentor Harvey Penick days prior was another one. Also Dallas Braden pitching a perfect game on Mothers Day, a day he resented because he lost his mom to cancer. Even was suffering from an hangover that day. Pushed through bc of his grandmother in attendance
Thomas Robinson from Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team. He lost his grandmother, grandfather and mother within 3 weeks he still play when they were playing against Texas in 2011
Ah, this is quite unexpected, yet a very impressive video, as well as the narration by Ryan, is very well done. Thank you very much for this, and I certainly hope that everything has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!🙏🎅🎄❄️🎁🎆🎇🎊
I will always have a connection to Dale Earnhardt Sr's death. As part of a project in my English class, we had to job shadow in whatever job field our project was about. I happened to do mine on Journalism, especially that on TV. I happened to follow a field reporter in my area and the day that I shadowed was the day of his funeral. One of the stories we did was about the funeral and some reactions by those that watched it.
Matthias Steiner. Bejing Olympins 2008. Wife died the previous year but he promised her he'd win a gold for her. He failed 2 lifts but lifted his personal best to win. The commentators even said "He didn't do it for his country. He did it for his late wife"
Chris Godwin’s baby was stillborn and he played that same day. (His wife encouraged him to do such, he did not abandon her) he had a touchdown and sobbed on the ground for his child as his teammates came over to support him. One of the most painful and beautiful scenes in NFL history.
I attended the 2001 Oklahoma State-Missouri basketball game that was the first home game for the team after a plane crash killed 2 players, the play by play announcer and 7 others. It was an emotional game and OSU pulled out a hard fought win over the Tigers.
The humbolt broncos hockey team. A bus crash that killed almost the entire team. Their first game the next season was insanly emotional for the town and survivors
U forgot these; Frank lampard playing and scoring in a champions league SF game after his mum died. Lakers playing their first game since Kobe Bryant died and going on to win the championship in same year. Michael Schumacher winning San Marino GP 2003 without champagne spray because of his mum's passing earlier that day
I would’ve included Ben Crenshaw on this list. His mentor Harvey Penick passed the same week of the Masters. Flew to Austin to be a pallbearer at his funeral. Then a few days later, won his second green jacket.
Honorable Mentions: *Michael Jordan, he led the Chicago Bulls with their record of 72-10, to their 4th NBA Championship over the Seattle Supersonics in 1996 NBA Finals Game 6 on Father's Day, as a tribute to his late Dad James Jordan Sr. on who tragically passed away in 1993 which led him retiring from Basketball in 93 after their 1st 3-peat vs Phoenix Suns, in pursue of Baseball *Boston Celtics, after the tragic passing of Reggie Lewis *Los Angeles Lakers, The entire NBA and the entire Basketball world after Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi had passed away from a Helicopter crash at Calabasas, CA. *NBA Draft 2021,The entire NBA honors and drafted the late young prospect Terrence Clarke who passed away from a car accident *James "Buster" Douglas, he pulled a historical emotional upset by knocking out Mike Tyson, as tribute to his late mother *Matthias Steiner, earn a gold medal in an emotional manner at Beijing Olympics 2008 weightlifting Men's 150kg gold medal, as a tribute to his late wife who passed away from a car accident *Houston Comets, won the 1999 WNBA Championship after beating New York Liberty, the first 3-Peat Champion in WNBA History, as their tribute to their late teammate Kim Perrot who passed away from Brain Tumor *Joannie Rochette, won Bronze at Women's Figure Skating at Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010, in honor of her late mother who passed away from heart attack *Alexis Arguello vs Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, after the fight, Arguello made a promise that he would do anything to help Ray's father Lenny Mancini who at that time was dealing with an illness *Roberto Duran, he hugged Esteban de Jesus while in a critical dying state, de Jesus passed away from complications of HIV/AIDS, Duran gave his title to de Jesus' family as a tribute *Rey Mysterio, won the World Heavyweight Championship after beating both Kurt Angle and Randy Orton at WWE WrestleMania 22, as a tribute and honor of his late friend Eddie Guerrero who passed away from acute heart failure
Charles Leclerc won 2017 Formula 2 feature race in Azerbaijan 5 days after the death of his father, securing him his 2018 F1 debut with Kick Sauber team. He also won his first ever F1 race in 2019 Belgian GP just 24 hours after fatal accident of fellow race car driver, Anthoine Hubert from France. 10 years after a fatal accident of a family friend, Jules Bianchi, he won his home race in Monaco GP after 5 failed attempts, honoring said win to three of them.
Here’s something spooky, the Miami Marlins were scheduled to play the Cleveland Indians the day Jose died in the boating accident. In 1993, the Cleveland Indians lost two players in a boating accident.
This probably doesn’t count but Tom Brady bringing the Patriots back from being down 28 to 3 in Super Bowl 51 as his mother attended her first game after 18 months of battling cancer will always be special to me. The way he broke down and dropped to his knees after realizing the game was over always gets me.

I wouldn't say it's an "incredible" performance, because he got his ass kicked pretty easily, but Anthony Smith just had a fight in the UFC shortly after his coach and close friend of several decades died suddenly from a heart attack. The fact that he was even in the cage showed a lot of heart.
Good shout, that must have been so hard. I’m sure Reyes didn’t even wanna have to fight him. Francis Ngannou too, winning only months after losing his infant son.
When Brett Favre's father died he played against the raiders which their stadium is like hell but the raiders fans even though they lost badly they treated Favre with such kindness
I know you put Dale Jr's win at the 2001 Pepsi 400 at Daytona in here, but you should also look at what happened just a week after the Daytona 500. Steve Park, a driver that Dale Earnhardt hired to drive for his team several years before, won his second career race at the Dura Lube 400 at Rockingham Motor Speedway.
Hertha Berlin’s first home game only a few days after passing of their president died age 45 never ever seen a stadium so quite during a moment of silence. The first game from the New York rangers after 9/11 should be on the list
Where are Rey Mysterio for winning the wwe royal rumble in 2007 and the main event of that year wrestlemania weeks after the death of his close friend Eddie Guerrero, and the 1994 & 95 Cleveland Indians who were were in playoff position when the players strike stopped the 94 season and winning the 95 American league championship after the 1993 boating accident that killed teammates Tim Crews and Steve Olin
Could say the same for, Kurt Angle. He lost his sister the day before his big, iconic match with Brock Lesnar. Even though Kurt lost the match. His performance with Brock on Smackdown, during the Iron Man Match was truly one of a kind!!
@michaelolive5070 ok but what about the Cleveland Indians 1994 and 1995 seasons bringing Steve Olin's widow and children on the field the night they clinched tha American league central division championship
October 2004: Jimmie Johnson wins at Atlanta a week a plane owned by Hendrick Motorsports, team Johnson drove for, crashed outside Martinsville claiming the lives of 10 Hendrick Motorsports employees
How in the world is Buster Douglas not on this list? He lost his mother days before beating an undefeated amike Tyson for the Heavyweight Championship. HUGE oversight
Say what you will about the 2017 Astros, but going through Hurricane Harvey and finding a way to beat the Mets and their pitcher Matt Harvey in their first home series is a great story
To me Brett Favre is number one. What a performance that was with the circumstances he had. Probably the greatest or one of the greatest MNF performances of all time right there. It's subjective though the number one choice. I do like what others had to say about it
Thanks for the heads up.... could kinda see by other comments, especially lack of one's such as Hillsborough. Which is a bit more than some players mum dying
What about Kurt Angle? A lil before the 1996 Olympics, his trainer Dave Schultz got killed by the Fox catchers coach. So that was a lot of pressure on the Foxcatcher squad itself. But Kurt somehow pulled it off with a broken freakin’ neck! Definitely should’ve been on this list.
Demar hamlin coming back to the bills and the opening kick return TD. Plus it being 3 years and 3 months since the last kickoff return TD for the bills
Great analysis, thank you! Could you help me with something unrelated: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
The disrespect of not mentioning Kobes death where every team commemorated him and the Lakers even won that years championship and in 2022 when Argentina won the world cup months after Diego Maradonna died
Marquis Goodwin scored a touchdown for the 49ers hours after his wife had a miscarriage. That was so amazing he had the strength to play. My girlfriend and I lost a child and I couldn't even get to work at Walgreens much less function.
Not going to give any credit to Khabib? Retired undefeated. His dad was not only has father but his coach. “Father’s plan” was developed and the blueprint has lead to the most dominate family in combat sports history. The man goes out and retires because he promised his mom after his dad’s death.
All of these are great stories but they are nothing in comparison to the Washington Commanders performance this season after the death of Daniel Snyder as owner.
I know of something better, trotting superstar winning his fathers race after losing him 6 months prior then crying in remembrance. We still miss you Olle

I’d add Michael Jordan’s finals win after his dad died
@hozedYT I believe the 1999 NBA Finals occurred in June. Michael's father James died the following month.
@ no it was ‘96
@hozedYT Oops. I'm wrong. James Raymond Jordan Sr. died on July 23, 1993. But it was still a month after the 93 Finals which were from the 9th to the 20th of June.
Before the 2008 Olympics, Matthias Steiner’s wife sadly passed away in a car accident. He would go on to win the gold in weightlifting!
These athletes who have lost a family member have strength to move forward. Grief comes and goes, but it made you realize tomorrow is never promising and to enjoy life with the people you love
Like Brett Favre, gaining strength to steal fro hungry children and starving seniors!
Where is buster douglas on the list?? That man lost his mama almost got knocked out in the first round then beat iron mike Tyson for the heavyweight championship.
He's the first person I thought of when I read the title 👍
I honestly believe it's why he won.
Absolutely, he's the real #1.
100%. It's a bit deeper than that, even. The odds makers had Douglas as a 42 - 1 underdog. Meaning his KO over a prime Tyson is arguably the greatest upset in modern sporting history.

lol, the first week after they lost by 50-odd points, week after that they managed to win.
@ thanks. I knew they won close to that but couldn’t remember exactly when
Oh the Phill Wash one was devastating 😢

Yes it is truly incredible that she pushed through tragedy and won a gold medal
