RIP Mary Ann Messick 2/4/13 - A great lady and masterful archived of Baxter County, Arkansas.
Was likely racist and homophobic
Dorothy looks so beautiful here and Arlene absolutely breathtaking.
Dorothy has the best haircut ever here. Perfect for her face.
Much better than the early 60's.
"...they sometimes come two-by-two, heterosexually... yeah. But actually, they more often take the bus!" John Daly cracks me up... This show is just such a fortunate confluence of funny, clever and (in the case of Arlene Francis especially!) attractive people!
can someone explain the joke to me?
@@chantelle4768 did you come heterosexually, or by bus, or by car....
WML is one of the funniest shows ever!
HAHA, Dorothy!:
"Do they ever come two-by-two? Heterosexually?"
Bennett: "HEY!"
It would be darned interesting to know how often the word "heterosexually" had been used in live American TV before Dorothy dropped it into living rooms all over America.
My Cousin Was a Was A wonderful Person !! Mary was a Interesting person !! she made me laugh, and she always visted my Grandma Conner
My goodness, Arlene looks like she can be one of those evil, but gorgeous, Bond girls.
It's weird but she somehow looks more sexy or pretty or something with the eye patch on.
I love Miss Messieks accent. Its beautiful
Years later, Mary Ann Messick wrote a centennial history of Baxter County Arkansas.
Dorothy looks stunning with that hairstyle! Go Girl!
That Justice of the Peach has a "down-home Southern" quality that you practically couldn't find any more. It's charming. It seems like the regional peculiarities of people may have been homogenized out of existence with the Internet and mass media...
I'm a 5th generation Texan & have been watching it happen before my very eyes for decades now. Our state has been so invaded from the North, South (of the boarder) east coast, west coast, it is insane. Lord help us!!!
Justice of the Peace
"Appliances for newly weds" Tony Perkins is adorable.
She is one of my favorite guests ever!! She is too adorable here.
She reminds me of Sam Drucker is Green Acres , practically runs the town.
Considering Arlene was sitting next to Tony Perkins, she's lucky to have kept one eye!
Oh my! lol.
MR PERKINS: You don't deal with appliances for Newlyweds?
HAHAHAAA Arlene and Dorothy's laughter is priceless. I love these ones that get no where and the panelists end up asking silly questions like this because they just have nothing left lol timeless!
Gorgeous ladies Dorothy and Arlene looking lovely as ever. I'm liking Arlene's hair here, it's a bit more full and out looking than usual. Very nice!
Hilariously humble and lovely contestant
I love how Arlene Francis always has the same necklace on in all the episodes of this show.
Arlene received the necklace from her husband Martin Gable as a gift at a reputed cost of 200,000 dollars in 1940s dollars. The Necklace was stolen by a mugger from Arlene on a New York street in the late 70's or early 80's
Aww. Such a sad ending for such a sweet story :( Still interesting though.
Yes it is sad. Arlene was a one of a kind. She was a credible actress, had a disarming wit and loved people.
That Tiffany diamond heart was a gift from her husband. A thief ripped it from her neck on the street and it was never recovered .
MY COUSIN!!!!! I MISS HER!!!!
HOW TRUE! Arlene is so delightful and beautiful (even with an eye patch)!
Dorothy looks gorgeous! She always should have worn her hair that way.
Tony looks like he lost his address book in a helicopter over the Greek islands
Sublime humour .........pure gold.
Arlene is very accident prone
Loved this episode. Mary Ann was terrific. And Arlene looks stunning!
I like Dorothy's hair, here.
Miss Messiek was so sweet. I do wonder if she was afraid to ever come north again after this experience. When Dorothy said "heterosexually" she looked like she wanted to crawl under the desk ;-)
HAHAHA! John said, Please, this is a family program! LOL
John's response to Dorothy's 'Two-by-two, heterosexually" cracked me up big time
My favorite contestant ever!!! Thank you for posting, I had this on Tivo a few years ago and lost.
@BethBetteJulie I agree, Arlene looks stunning wearing an eye patch. I also love her voice. She's got that natural sultriness to her personality and style.
"Sometimes they take the bus." Haw!!
Thanx for posting this 1960 episode.
This is the fourth and last time that accident prone Arlene Francis appears on live TV in an eye patch. Years later, she appeared wearing sunglasses, but that is another story.
Ms Messick is a healthy girl. You'll notice that she stands eye to eye with six footer Daly.
In this period, WML had an affinity for groundbreaking women in careers usually associated with men. Ms. Messick, as we see, is still one of the more memorable.
Very beautiful lady...
@spagandtuna She was no dummy. She had an accent, just like billions of other people in the world.
Tony Perkins is great in this episode! Wish there were more shows with him.
He's horrible. And they all know it.
Arlene is so cute with her eyepatch lol :P
It took all of one syllable - "Miss" - at 0:16 for everyone to know that she was a true daughter of Dixie. And the word "Arkansas" at 0:24 has never been given a more pronounced drawl.
@chilvari Should have worn that style all the time. She's very stunning here.
Psycho was released in July 1960 of this same year. This is May. Rarely have I seen Dorothy look any more beautiful than in this one.
Why do I have a girl crush on Arlene Francis? hihihihi, I'm just giggling now. I guess if I had the privilege to meet her I would blush and if I have the strength I will shake her hand then faint, LOL. I do adore her.
Its sad she is not here anymore RIP Arlene :(
You're a beautiful angel.
In my wildest dreams, I can't imagine Arlene Francis making love to Martin Gabel!
@@kenretherford1197 What the hell bruh
What ever happened to Mary Ann Messick?
Sexiest...eyepatch...ever
Sounded just like my mother. I miss that "twang", she's been gone for way-too-long, now. Felt-good to heah it agin'...! :)
John Chows Daywee is sooo good.
tony's questions are WAY TOO concentrated
This is when game shows were intelligent.
haha that was great. she was a lot of fun without even saying much.
Norman Bates in the house, you scary person.
2:21 (The biggest chill ever!!!) I was not expecting to see him and now I'm afraid to turn off the light :(
Yea-us!
@cornermoose Yes. As an elected official she would likely have performed a variety of services besides marriages, including civil court proceedings such as small claims, property disputes, traffic court and misdemeanor hearings. A JP might do much of what you see taking place today on TV courtroom shows. This is why she indicated that not everyone left happy after seeing her.
Anthony Perkins appeared as a mystery guest a number of times both in the Sunday Night and syndicate versions, but he appeared more memorably as a panelist. He came to this broadcast to publicize his new movie directed by Hitchcock, "Psycho." He also appeared on that memorable panel in Feb 1961 that featured Dorothy Kilgallen as a mystery guest.
As we see, he entertains the audience consistently even if his questions aren't quite very good.
When these people leave having left comma
Dorothy Kilgallen pretty much solved all the games that evening, including identification of mystery guest Jane Wyman. That clip is somewhere in YouTubia.
( 4:11> ) Would be interesting to know if this is the first time "heterosexually" ever appeared in a live entertainment program. I think the sound we hear after her question come from the CBS censors biting through the stems of pipes.
In this one especially.
I suspect it refers to the play "Two By Two" that told the story of Noah's Ark.
@beepandbop Apparently her eye was injured...not serious though the patch did come off eventually.
Would most people at home in the 1950's even have known what the word "heterosexually" meant?
You're so right!!
Anthony Perkins cringed at the hetrosexual question
Is Arlene going through a pirate phase?
Arrrrlene
He's made better appearances IMO.
Thanks! I am already sharing this with some others.
"Sometimes".
"And you're from New England?" :D
:D I slept with my light on anyway ;)
i wonder why she had an eye patch
"Football Player + Miss America on "What's My Line?" features a 1952 What's My Line episode with Arlene Francis in another eye patch. Yo Ho Ho.
Always enjoy reading your thorough information! Please do tell.. what's the sunglasses 'other story'?!
Why does the cute blond judge have any eye patch?
eye infection
Psycho was released in July 1960 of this same year. This is May.
@soulierinvestments Is the episode where is she wearing sunglasses on here at all?
I'd be willing to bet $1000.00 this is the first time the term " heterosexually" was ever used on national TV. I'd also bet she knew about the "closet" life of the goon to her right.
Big mouth Bennett strikes again
1. As they say in French- a tall broad.
2. Knowing that Perkins was an in-the-closet homosexual, i wonder what he was thinking to himself when the heterosexual comment was made. I wonder how these people were able to keep these dark secrets so that it didn't affect their ability to earn a living.
What year is this? Maybe around 1960?
@KennySherman
Arlene was notoriously accident prone in this period -- apparently she stuck something in her eye.
This is the fourth and last time that Ms Francis appears on live TV in an eye patch. One time in the early 1950s, her son stuck something in her eye. Years later, she appeared wearing sunglasses, but that is another story.
@chilvari Yeah, not too many ppl in the world can make an eye patch look sexy loololol
Yes, but the honourable lady justice had an accent as thick as Forrest Gump's and Gomer Pyle's.
The contestant reminds me a little of Geraldine Page.
Why is she wearing an eye patch?
@harrietcow 'less majesty'? Possibly?
@mcmrfklaw He was loaded with sex appeal.
Mother is not around so don't worry. ;)
I wondered that myself, they thought everything she said was funny, I don't get it
Daly gave it away from the start..."Honorable" you know?
Annnd Im thinkin the movie Psycho again... thanks guy in the middle whose name I forget!
Everyone has an accent
LOL
Arlene looks gorgeous like always.
But why the hell is she wearing an eye patch?
she had an eye infection
@mcmrfklaw So would I!
The real star of this pro9gram f9r mje was John Daly. Urbane, eitty, mellifluos dicdtion and aqrticulation--the greatest.
Pretty sure there wasn't a big necessity for gay marriages, especially in the South. What Dorothy should have asked was if male and female couples appeared before her for the service she provided. Dorothy was trying to be clever and it backfired.
why is Arlene wearing an eye patch in this episode?
eye infection
Accident prone? What are the odds of that happening four times? I mean, really? Could it be....just maybe, there was domestic violence in her marriage? You know, the very ones we would never EVER suspect are the ones who totally blow our minds when we find out their secrets. Arlene is so bubbly, kind, considerate and smart but maybe she HAD to become that way? I'm just askin'.....cause either way, accident prone or domestic abuse are both very hard to believe.
I don't think Tony Perkins was closeted: he was pretty open about having homosexual relationships and then, later in his life, both gay and straight relationships. This not to say he was going to go on about it on television, but folks knew he was gay.
Love Tony but he made part of this clip a little draggy and painful to watch.
