Great vid. I have rotated between CarPro Bug Out and Gtechniq W5 Citrus APC for bug guts removal. Simply blasts of with a PW of course, but using a normal garden house should also work.
Jup, bug season has commenced. My method is pretty weird.... Since I use Rinseless, I can't really use APC as I can't just rinse it off easily. So instead, I found that summer windscreen washer fluid works very good and easy! It doesn't interfere with the rinseless performance, but hits hard on bugs and bird poop!
Great video as always Jon. The only reason I don't use citrus wash is because it strips off wax, and I don't have the time to keep re applying it every week.
John, 99,99% of you videos are excellent, but I disagree with this one: I see no reason to drag all those bugs around inside a single brush. Also, looks like a lot of work. I'd use surfex HD + hose down. If anything is remaining on the paint, use a rinseless wash and a microfiber towel folded in 4. Also not drying my black car would be a bad idea for water spots, so I'd use another towel to dry the car using the rinseless solution as a drying aid.
i also found weird how he starts off saying no force be gentle and then at the end just goes to town with the dirty brush literally using high force. absolute nonsense.
Or have a coating on the paint and these sort of stuff will come off with a mild snow foam and rinsing. But I agree he's probably caused some marring with what he's just done.

I’m shocked at the number of people who seem to think you’re absolutely destroying your paint when I wouldn’t expect any such thing if you’ve got a layer of protection on top. Happy to be proven wrong, but at the same time, would be equally happy to be proven right! Thanks for all you do on tbe channel 👍🏽
I used ONR after 160 miles including 60 miles round Goodwood, the bugs came off easily, good soak & rinse after a bit of gentle brushing. Like John said, the trick is not to leave them to dry on. I did rinse the brush out though plus a final rinse of deionised water. Disappointed not to see the grey BMW there today. 😃
I would have just hit that up with uber rinseless, if you have decent protection it just comes off without needing any specialist bug off type products. You've really got to get around to trying some of the ONR competitors John. Wolfgang Uber, Ultima, McKees etc
Good video John. Something I’ve learnt over years of detailing my own cars - the etching is only impressions in the clear coat. When contaminants are removed and lacquer is heated by sun, etching goes. Like bird crap too.
Not quite. I have one vehicle (a pickup truck) that I used to wash once a year, or two. I ended up with patches of clear coat missing where the bug guts + sun + time completely dissolved the clear coat. Paint is fine underneath. I fixed it with a bit of wet sanding and a can of clear coat. Ended up ok, since white paint is so easy to work with, but I suspect that the damage would have been worse on a darker car.
Try driving in Florida in may and October. The love bugs are 100x worse, on a daily basis…I have to clean my windshield and front end everyday…..thank God it only lasts a few weeks twice a year..
This video leads into something I've wondered for a while, and I've not found a decent video for (as yet) ... "Essential Kit for a Road Trip". I'm thinking a box of items to use in association with a garage pressure washer whilst away for a couple of weeks. The bug relevance being "Scottish Midges", but also overall keeping clean and shiny without taking every bit of detailing kit (I don't have a tow hitch 🤪). Anyway, just a thought for a video, perhaps. 👍
This is something thing I’ve been trying to formulate. We’ve got a little beach house so I’ve been trying to build a skeleton kit to leave there so I can wash the car, but a travel kit, or a small kit to keep in the boot is a great idea.
Jon, are dedicated bug removers just citrus cleaners or is there more to it than that? I seem to recall a video where a bug remover was sprayed and you could see the bugs 'melting' away in a streaking fashion, similar to how iron remover bleeds iron spots, it creates a purple trail on the paint. Got any experience as to whats in those products which differ from your APC/citrus?
citrus and surfactants... most are water based some can be solvent based. the solvent properties of limonene even in a water based formula seem to work well on bugs. but you could just use APC>
Griots Garage Bug and Smudge Remover will remove the bug guts easily and also remove all the tar and rolled up rubber that sticks to your inner wheel rims making you think your tires have lost a wheel weight! And to prevent future bugs from sticking in the first place, use Griots Bug Barricade.
Citrus is detergent blend plus limonene solvent. Tfr is typically detergent plus caustic alkaline and stronger acids... Non caustic tfr exist too. Tfr is stronger for heavy film removal.
The colour of the car isn’t going to make a difference as if you’re gonna get swirls, you’re gonna get swirls. Hi John. Good video. Bug splatter is a nightmare to get off. As you say the longer they are left on, the harder they are to remove. Also the damage they do to the paintwork. I watched a video recently, and this guy who dies derailing, said he uses hand sanitizer gel which contains alcohol for removing bugs. I tried it, and didn’t work. Have you ever tried that’s method. Thanks. Mark. Keep up the good work.
It protects it to a certain extent but eventually it will eat through the wax or ceramic and then into the clear. I never leave mine for more then a week as I’ve had them etch even with a good sio2 wax. Bird shite is even worse!
I use Surfex HD with Meguiars waterless wash and wax. I figure the waterless wash gives solid lubrication to protect the paint and Surfex makes easy work of the bugs
any mild degreaser that is alkaline and non-caustic will remove most bugs if followed by a pressure rinse. Ive seen people use dryer sheets, the dreaded bug sponges, and much more. Mineral spirits or a decent bug remover followed by a pressure rinse does wonders. Requires no scrubbing. Hit it with ONR or N-914 and walk away. I do this literally every day
Howdy, got a quick question for you. I've been a keen home detailer for years and have used most of what youll find in the popular UK orange shop until I discovered Bilt Hamber years ago and now the 'core' of my wash stages consist of BH foam, shampoo and Surfex as my exterior APC of choice. Iv'e never used a Citrus cleaner however. Would say 10% surfex do the job here, or is there something special about citrus cleaners I am missing? Thanks
Hi John. I've just got home from a driving holiday in Wales. But the bugs have been on the car for nearly a week. Most have come off, but some looked properly baked in! Should I clay it? Or something less abrasive? Thanks
I find a brilo pad and fairy liquid works great. Being more serious great video as the title sudjests its an easy way of dealing with it especially when your dinner is ready soon after a long day. How many of us have said "ill just quickly sort this out" then it turns into a full blown safe wash.
Out of the ones you've tried, is there a favourite citrus pre-wash you're particular enthusiastic about, or are they largely the same? I think I recall seeing you at one time or another you using AG Spritzer, Car Chem Citrus and now Bouncer's CI-Wash.
Sure it’s a good idea to leave the water to dry? I would be worried about water spots especially without a filter system. I’ve been using ONR to do a similar thing and can spray most of them off with a pressure sprayer without touching it. Then using a thick pile microfibre to gently remove the rest and then dry
Great video, thanks. Why didn't you just wait until the complete wash of tomorrow, which is very close in time ? (with the car sleeping in the shadow inside your garage - no sun on the paint to "cook" the bugs) If it's really urgent to remove all the bugs within a few hours, I wonder how all the detailing lovers do when they come home at 8 p.m everyday after work.
Personally I'd have just left it for the following day, John did mention he'd been out all day so not wanting too drag the pressure washer out plus all his cars are well protected.
I have a graphene coating on my car. I purposely left bugs on for 2 weeks just to see was it going to be easier hard to get off. All I had to do was turn on the pressure washer and they all blasted off on the first pass
Do you use any type of water filtering? I noticed you didn't dry off the car at the end. Don't you get water spots? I've a black car, so super paranoid about it!
John im intersted to know if you suffer from water marks where you are? If I were to rinse it down as you've done here and leave it I would normally get terrible water marks. I'm in Wokingham in Berkshire. I invested in a DI water vessel from Infinity wax in Feb and haven't needed to dry any of my cars since! :)
8:36 Maybe today, but tomorrow you'll be removing all the water spots XD. Could just spray it down with a good ONR solution after hosing down and then wipe it dry. I'd never let a car with hose water air dry unless I had one of those fancy CR Spotless filters.
I know this is unrelated, however what is the best product to hide scratches on interior plastic please, it's dark grey almost black, previous owners must have used it for a dump run , thanks
Here we go into bug season 🙂 I coated my vehicle with adams graphene coating just few days ago and 100% sure I will face bug problems tomorrow… Is citrus safe for just coated car? Maybe ONR will do better? What would you advise for such situation?
Hi John great videos as always. How about doing one on tyre pressure gauges? I'm sure mine isn't accurate but i have no way of testing it. 👍👍 Ps. watched that vid you did the other day of you playing tennis and no offence but Stephen hawking would have taken you to 5 sets i reckon 😂😂😂👍👍👍 really enjoying the channel 👍
Does mixing something like ONR or other waterless product to the cleaner like Surfex HD work to reduce brush scratches? or does the cleaner negate the effect from it. Might be an option if there are brushes on paint involved, i prefer a soft towel.
ONR on its own is more than effective enough to remove those bugs with zero effort/pressure and no need to rinse...or worry about working fast in the sun. Take your time and get it clean, then wipe dry. Use a drying aid/topper if you like.
@@M.E63 Yeah they can etch in, especially the bigger splats! Damage from squashed bugs is underrated and a lot of detailers don't really mention it...bug shift products break down the proteins to make them easy to jet wash or brush off.
I've powerlines that run over my driveway with birds sitting and crapping off them all the time.... pain when i catch it late and its already burnt into the clear slightly so have to give it a little quick cut and reseal... do you recommend anything? apart from an air rifle to get rid of them pests
I have a pressure washer with 130 bar 1600 watt for €70 is it too powerfull? I like it a lot it works good. I could change it for a K2 or Bosch home they are Both€70 but with 110 bar and no wheels, or a 120 bar one for €130 or 105 bar for €60
It's probably fine either way, i use an older K2 that still has wheels and it's been serving me well for over 6 years, i don't have a good foam lance so i apply my prewash with a pump sprayer, though with a good lance like the mjjc pro there's videos of k2s producing acceptable levels of foam, only thing that sucks is the short cable which i replaced for a 10 meter one and my absence of a short trigger kit
@@martin1649 thank you for your reaction. I like it because it's a little boost i would be harmfull if i would hold it on a part of a car where the clear coat isnt good, but if you are carefull keep you distance and use the right attachment you should be fine right? I also have a problem with my foam but i can't find one because it is a home brand. So that sucks, i make sure to use the best foam i can find and work with what i have. I also start to think of useing ph neutral cleaners, is it really better? For you i would say do it with what you have if the pump spray is good then why not? There is also a foam cannon for a garden hose but i dont know if they will do the job. I bought my pressure washer i came with a plastic foam cannon it does the job i guess. Have a Nice Day and thank you again! I will see what i can do. Work with what you have right?

I have much better way how to remove bugs. Splash clean water on the area with dead bugs. After that cover the wet area with bugs with paper towel. Leave it for 30 minutes and after half hour simply remove the paper towel with bugs. Thats all, you don not need more.
The Red liquid isn't blood but fluid from certain bug's eyes.
Boom. Great knowledge love it
Vampire bugs?
Surfex HD does the job for me. 5-10% left to soak for five minutes is so potent. Never failed me yet.
“Looks like blood”…. I imagine if my arse went through my face there would be blood involved! Haha
Great to see the proactive approach, and I get the exhaustion after a long day...but I worry about water spots.
A question. Why are we even bothering with protections like ceramics, waxes and so on if we can't even leave dead bugs on the paint the night over?
I had this thought too. I put 4 coats of top of the line coating on my car and I still need to gently wash it with all the steps and then add a ceramic “topper” on it after anyway as drying aid etc. Basically it looks nicer in between and I love my car is really the only reason haha

Why the citrus product and not BH Surfex HD? Do you need both products?
Could use surfex
Jon, another great video as per usual, what trigger heads would you recommend for the IK spray bottles, I'm after some different ones for mine.
@@adblf cheers Adam, I'll have a look through them 👍
I have a graphene coating on my car. I purposely left bugs on for 2 weeks just to see was it going to be easier hard to get off. All I had to do was turn on the pressure washer and they all blasted off on the first pass
Would surfex HD do the job ?
Yes
Do you use any type of water filtering? I noticed you didn't dry off the car at the end. Don't you get water spots? I've a black car, so super paranoid about it!
No m8
John im intersted to know if you suffer from water marks where you are? If I were to rinse it down as you've done here and leave it I would normally get terrible water marks. I'm in Wokingham in Berkshire. I invested in a DI water vessel from Infinity wax in Feb and haven't needed to dry any of my cars since! :)
That's what drying towels are for
I didn't dry but the next day i washed it. Most of the water just pooled off. So was ok. I have hard water to. No ideal.
Go to channel for non biased product reviews but I think I'll stick to snow foam or a very mild mix of surfex if need be 💪🏾
8:36 Maybe today, but tomorrow you'll be removing all the water spots XD.
Try meguiars X 2.0. works awesome.
@@agent699 many thanks, I'll give it a try
Hi thanks for this does it effet any wa protective coating already applied to the paintwork? thanks Stu
No more than other detergents really.
Here we go into bug season 🙂 I coated my vehicle with adams graphene coating just few days ago and 100% sure I will face bug problems tomorrow… Is citrus safe for just coated car? Maybe ONR will do better? What would you advise for such situation?
Is the Adams the spray form or the one is the glass bottle is its the one in glass bottle don't wash your car at least for 7days
Question John.. How is your foam so thicc? I've got a kranzle k1322ts and it's not as nearly as thicc as yours.
My water is hard, do I need DI?
I have hard water... It's my lance mjjc pro v2
🤣🤣🤣😉
The Michellin digital guage is good and accurate. Tested against my PCL Accura digital inflator which is a calibrated instrument.
I went for the topeak one in the end which seems ok but thanks for the reply 👍
£1 elbow grease spray works like a hot knife in butter on bugs
Basically does the same as the citrus wash
Does mixing something like ONR or other waterless product to the cleaner like Surfex HD work to reduce brush scratches? or does the cleaner negate the effect from it.
Might be an option if there are brushes on paint involved, i prefer a soft towel.
ONR on its own is more than effective enough to remove those bugs with zero effort/pressure and no need to rinse...or worry about working fast in the sun. Take your time and get it clean, then wipe dry. Use a drying aid/topper if you like.
What's the difference between a citrus wash like you use in the video and an APC like Surfex HD?
Limonene
Love this thank you
Was that neat or mix? I’ve got Jennychem citrus and it’s rubbish unless it’s neat.
Mixed 8 think m8
Don't them hose guns have like 6/7 different spray options , should of switched to a higher pressure on the options
You will scratch the crap out of any soft paint doing this.
Good one John
Could you make your own citrus spray ??
Is there anything you can so if they have etched into paintwork?
Polish
Great just in time , I went on 300 mile trip to Scotland and my bumper and number plate is covered with bugs, need to tackle this issue this week
ASAP dude, bug splatter can etch into clear coat pretty quick! I use Gyeon Bug & Grime, good stuff.
@@23hublock1 thanks I never knew that to be honest, brand new car aswell
@@M.E63 Yeah they can etch in, especially the bigger splats! Damage from squashed bugs is underrated and a lot of detailers don't really mention it...bug shift products break down the proteins to make them easy to jet wash or brush off.
So therapeutic
With my ceramic coating I can leave bugs a few days and use warm soapy water wash over once wait few min then go again they are all gone 🤷🏻♂️
Just put some wet clothes ( water+onr, but water alone work ) on the bugs, wait few minutes and gone! That's what I do on my bikes in summer.
Soooo - did you get all the soap off.....?
🐝🐞🦋 We will seek revenge Jon
Boy that pressure is extremely low from the garden hose.
What were you using to get rid of it please.... Where you get that paint brush from.....
Detail factory brush
How did you dry the car ? Sorry if I didnt catch it. Just heard you said you were not going to towel dry it.
I didn't dry because it was dirty just pooled it off
@@ForensicDetailing no water spots ?
The bugs bleed of with bilt hamber touchless when sprayed on dry then pressure rinse after and there gone
How do you find your m4 on track I find them rather heavy and clumbersome compared to the M2 which I much prefer
The CS is lighter than m2. I love it on track but just can't commit with it for fear if wipe out. M2 is wicked though. Maybe more fun than m4
I've powerlines that run over my driveway with birds sitting and crapping off them all the time.... pain when i catch it late and its already burnt into the clear slightly so have to give it a little quick cut and reseal... do you recommend anything? apart from an air rifle to get rid of them pests
Stick with the air rifle, get a cover or park somewhere else. None ideal but there you go.
What about the water spots if you’re not drying ?
Hi Jon - how would you rate a dedicated bug removal product (e.g. Poorboy's bug squash) against a citrus pre-wash?
They tend to be the same I think...
@@ForensicDetailing cheers! Love your vids mate 👌🏻
Man invest in a pump sprayer
What LSP is currently on your paintwork? Sorry if I missed it.
It's hydra wax
A coating would be ideal for this exact situation. A foam and rinse would of removed 99% of the bugs
Why not use warm soapy water?
Did not really need it
@@ForensicDetailing cheaper?
At this point you might as well just do a quick one bucket wash on the front end
John why don't you have puml sprayers not trigger sprayers for certain jobs- I've leaned so much from you ( thank you again) but ive 2 such bottles, ok I use loads more of whatever it is ( one is citrus) but having medical conditions and also the time they save....still regardless thank you for alive learned from you 👏👏👏
good stuff... you must have a water deionizer ... I would have hard water spots all over
I have much better way how to remove bugs. Splash clean water on the area with dead bugs. After that cover the wet area with bugs with paper towel. Leave it for 30 minutes and after half hour simply remove the paper towel with bugs. Thats all, you don not need more.
I used to do a method like that on my motorbike helmet until I became the bug
