  • It's time for spring maintenance and it's my first oil change on Edna. It was pretty easy and it's always nice to have fresh oil. The previous owner used Amzoil Zrod 10w30 oil so I decided to keep using that same oil.

Now that's an example of where a couple of auxiliary oil coolers would make great sense for additional cooling AND capacity!

Good choice on the oil. Expensive but cheaper than a rebuild! I use Valvoline VR1 10w30 in my coach and my Moms ... both 403 engines. I was going to chime in some tips but you aced the job! Prefilling the filter is very important, like you said. For extra fun, try doing a used oil analysis for about $30 on your next oil change! They can tell you if 1500 miles is a good interval or if you can go longer.

Thanks for the comment! I'll have to check out getting the tested at some point. I've enjoyed your videos, it's great to have more information out there on how to keep these motorhomes on the road and being enjoyed.

Punch a small hole with an old screw driver in the lowest part of the oil filter. It will drain the filter before you remove it saving some mess.

How’s the 10w-30 oil working? AMSOIL does make a couple of 10w-40 motor oils with the higher zinc content. I use their 15w-40 heavy duty diesel and marine motor oil in my older 7.3 powerstroke because of the higher additive content.

Thanks for the question! I've been happy with the 10W-30 so far, the oil pressure seems to stay where it should so I don't want to step up to a heavier weight oil unless I'm seeing oil pressure or oil burning problems. I do like the Z-Rod oil for the added zinc content.

How many ft./lbs did you tighten the drain plug to?

Thanks for the question. The manual for my '77 says to torque the drain plug to 10-15 ft/lbs which is a pretty wide range. I have always just tightened by feel and made sure it's not leaking. I occasionally look under the vehicle for leaks and check to see if there is a drip from the oil pan. I think it's good to be vigilant and check things often with an old vehicle like this.

@7:48 don't you hate it as soon as you record someone starts a mower!!!

Ha! Yep it's always a mower, or a loud truck driving by. At least I don't live next to an airport.
