Thank you. I got an 08 mazda6 and this fixed my issue. I actually had to loosen it up all the way, no grooves to get it to go on parked.

I wanted to say thank you for putting this on TH-cam. This saved me so much time and money... My Neutral Safety Sensor turned out to be fully functional! I also went to the ball joint at the transmission side and found it was completely rusted on with zero rotation. So I loosened that up and applied brake greese to prevent future rust. Now the shifter moves like butter... And of course, the car now registers Park "P" on the dash!!!

Same issue on a 2006 Mazda5. Instead of adjusting the cable form the inside, I too removed the cable from transmission and removed the rust.
Check the rust/dust near the sensor first!

Huge thanks for this video. We have two Mazda 3's, an '08 and '10. Both of them got to the point where they wouldn't start in Park. In both cases, the lever ends at the transmission were terribly rusted and movement was limited from all the corrosion. Over time, the cables had become more difficult to move through gear selection because of the resistance to movement at the transmission end.
I replaced the levers in both cars (part #46-310) and cleaned/lubricated the entire area. When I was done, the cables moved very freely and the action at the transmission end was perfect. The '08 hasn't had a problem since (2 years) but the '10 still wouldn't engage Park fully. This was frustrating because I knew the transmission end was just as it should be. Then I saw your video and after thinking about it, I believe I know what happened with the '10. Prior to fixing the lever end, the difficulty to select gears got to a point where the adjustment at the shifter end probably slipped a notch or two. It's only plastic after all and when the cable can't move freely, all the force at the shifter could've easily overcome the adjustment lock . By following your video, I moved the adjustment two threads and everything is perfect.
Thanks again, great job and explanation!

I had a credit card slip into the center console through the opening for the parking brake. I thought I'd be taking the entire center console apart. After watching your video at 1:00, I saw the top part of the console was separate and it popped off in seconds. Awesome stuff. Thanks a bunch!

I just used your video to fix a right-hand drive mazda 6 that needed the shifter to be held forwards for the car to start. The arrangement of the mechanism is different but the adjuster is the same. That white clip actually slides forward out of the way which I was glad to find as dropping that sort of part is standard for me. I moved the adjuster one notch and it's fixed!!
Thank you you and thank you TH-cam.

Worked great on my 2012 Mazda 6, thank you! I just left the cable on, I could pop the locking clip out using my fingers and then adjust the cable length by moving the shifter. My issue was that the car would not go into Drive, so I had to tighten the cable.

Thanks so much for this as it completely solved my no start in Park problem. A couple of notes: I had got decent access to the switch on the transmission by removing the air cleaner box (it just pulls out if you disconnect the big hose to the intake and pull up on it). Then by pushing on the shift arm with a screwdriver I found it would easily move the little bit more needed to go into the park position and the light would come on. At this point it was easy to set the correct cable length by pushing the end back onto the shifter stud and then pushing the white clamp piece into place. No trial and error needed. Also when I was done I found the shift interlock was not working. It turns out there is a small microswitch at the front of shifter box which is activated by a sliding plastic tab when the shifter is moved. For some reason the small metal arm had got jammed out of place but when I moved it with a small screwdriver it freed right up and all was well.

Thanks for the video. It is actually a bit easier than you show. The white lock clip can be slid forward without removing it from the cable. Also, no need to remove the cable from the shifter. Just slide the lock switch forward and pry the thread lock piece (greenish) out with a thin blade screwdriver. The cable will then be free to finds its "home". You can then slide the threadlock piece back into place and slide the lock back. I just di this on my 09 Mazda 3 and it fixed the gear selector engagement.

If the lever feels stiff when you shift the gears check the cable lock plate attached to the other end of the shfting cable to the transmission before you do any adjustments. Mazda 3 have this problem because they rust bad and the shifter cable doesn't go all the way in parking position. Spray DW40 or liquid wrench on the bracket and lock plate located under the air filter that is facing the radiator. I tried to adjust first the cable but it ended goin to park but not stay in drive mode. Sometimes the cable bracket bends because of the rust and age. All those will happen before the cable stretches.

    Thanks for the upload.
A special extra thanks for tanking the time to clearly show how the locking clip goes on and off. Being plastic I'm sure it would break quite easy being old and cold if force was being applied in the wrong direction.
A side question, does the TR switch go often? I'm about to work on my mom's car and from what I'm being told it doesn't register P all the time. So either an adjustment, or seizing shift cable or bad TR switch.
I value anyone's experience on it.
    Thanks in advance

Great video are any of the wires in there 12v switched reverse is engaged, for an easy reverse camera trigger wire is all I'm thinking is is that all in the transmission itself if so do you know where I might find the reverse 12 trigger that would also engage reverse lights bud. Either way I'm sure this video will come in handy one day as tedious but also simple at the same time as it seams 😂

Hi. Thank you for your informative video! I took my 2013 automatic Mazda 3 car to a Mazda dealer considering it would not start in park; had to start it in neutral even after another mechanic installed a Neutral Safety Switch Sensor. What the Mazda dealer did was "cleaned the rust off of the Shifter Selector Lever and lubed". That's it! Things is worse as of today. The shift cable and lock cable lever, both should have been replaced...correct? Including the nut and washer correct? Problems currently are my R for Reverse in my dashboard seldomly illuminate or will "back up". When in reverse the car just sit there. I have to wait until it is ready to back up. Also my P for Park when I start my car will not illuminate at times and my D for Drive will flash in and out at times. Please tell me what is wrong. Considering the Shifter Assembly, Shifter Cable and Neutral Safety Switch are in the same vicinity and working together. Correct? Do anything in this area need adjusting? Replaced? As far as Reverse not happening...could it be a Shift Solenoid? Your help or others of the same or similar problem is genuinely appreciated!! Thank You!

I have an 07 Mazda 3 2.0L. Just had the transmission rebuilt 1 month ago, past couple of days I noticed the park light dash indicator not illuminating. And then my car would no crank no start. Thankfully after trying to turn the car on 20-30 times/ Playing around with shifter, it started and was able to drive home. Now it no cranks no starts in my driveway, and slowly the dash indicators for the other positions (R,N, and D) have been going on and off intermittently until finally they are all out. I tried this trick, from the max to min cable length adjustment and its no registering at all whether its in park, neutral or drive. Any tips or recommendations? There was one time where i got the car to neutral and the light indicator on and i tried to start it and it did not start, Any tips would be greatly welcomed. Thanks!

Great Video. Any chance of doing one for a Mazda CX7 that's stuck in park? It is also a cable problem, not gearbox. There is no shifter release option on the CX7. Also, I can't find anything on the internet that deals with a CX7 stuck in park. It's a RHD vehicle. I can get it out of park by moving the shifter many times in its slot until it comes out and then the gears work fine until next time I stop. Thanks.

Thanks for the video, will check it out on my car in morning. I have a problem where the car is in Park, light shows park, but it won't move out of park now and won't start in park. I was able to move it to Neutral for a while and start the car in Neutral, but now its just stuck and won't move. I used the manual switch by poking a wire through the release hole on the shifter, and that helps move it to Neutral where I can start it again, but once I put it back in park, I have to use fix again to get it to move to Neutral and start. I'm not sure if this adjustment will help w/ this problem or if there's something else I should be looking at. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Something does not make sense, if the cable stretches over the years, increasing its length does not make sense, while I agree the length needs to be increased so the shifter lever(at the transmission) is pushed far enough to rotate into park.
    1) The linkage between the console shifter and the tranny box is most likely NOT a cable, it is a tubing encased in a housing, I mean it is NOT a steel cable made of strands as in emergency brake, or throttle, as you can only pull on them and they have a return spring to pull them back when pressure is released.
On my 05 Mazda, I found rust and dirt had accumulated on the shifter lever at the tranny and was preventing it from fully reaching its limit. I cleaned and lubricated the assembly and the problem was 90% cleared, and since the adjustment at the shifter handle was already at its longest limit, it leaves me with one option, to figure out a way to adjust the limit at the tranny.
In my opinion the length of the linkage is not stretching but compressing, and it is most likely a tubing rather than a steel cable.
Has anyone done some linkage adjustment on the tranny end ? please share your experience.

I replaced the cable and the switch on the transmission worked for two days and it's will not start. Ill put another switch on it and see if it starts. If it does something is causing that switch to go out. This all started after i had the transmission rebuilt and installed. It drives great, it's just figuring out the switch problem now. Mine is a 2006 mazda 3. I adjusted the old cable and that did not help either so i bought a new cable and a new neutral safety switch. So i will by another switch and see if it starts right up.

there is a shift interlock on the brake pedal ..won't shift from park without your foot on the brake pedal . But that shouldn't be an issue if the car is in neutral. Sounds like something may have fallen into the shifter mechanism and is jamming it

fupabox Yeah, I was thinking it might be the linkage under the car that connects to the transmission that is broke? Saw a few vids on that. This happened only after a Lock Smith had to manually put it in Neutral to make a key. Drove it around for a few miles since it had been sitting, parked at a Wal-Mart, got it stuck in Neutral.
