Curtis I have done 4 boats for and by far your boat will be stronger than any boat I have ever seen. Careful don’t get too heavy! Nice work!! Trick Tip. When grinding and fairing get a yard blower and have your girl friend hold it at right angles to your grinding and run it fast blowhard! It will blow the fiber glass away from you! I don’t even ware a suit any more! It’s much better when it’s so hot! If girl friend is busy you can put it on work table but it is a pain to keep it aimed right!
If at all possible, I would like to see video of applying the gel coat on whichever section that you can video it. I have not done gel coat myself, I don't use polyester resin (yet).
Looking really good Curtis, nice work! Noticed you used plywood in your first build and have now switched to the divinycell and coosa. Now that you have been using both do you think the divinycell is worth the extra cost?
Thank you! Divinycell and coosa is the way to go. it's a little more expensive but when you use plywood you end up using way more poly resin because the wood soaks up a ton of resin. Between the divinecell being so much easier to work with and the weight of it the couple hundred youd save using wood isnt worth it. Not to mention compsite materials when done right are for life.
Yes sir poly it is. Epoxy is way superior it's just the price. it's almost 3x or more as much as a bucket of poly. If I could afford it I'd definitely be using it. Epoxy is flexible, sticks to everything, impenetrable by water. Poly if layed to thick will cause stress cracks, only will stick to a poly boats for the most part, needs to be sealed by paint because it is porous and yrs down the road water can intrude. Quick summary I'm sure I'm missing stuff.
When you say that you're letting the product "KICK" does that mean it's hardening or curing or something like that? I know nothing about this sort of work, so thank you!
Will the front deck be strong with no stringers or support? Currently building a boat for the first time and I’m stuck on building the front casting deck.
Yes the deck will be plenty strong I can walk on it with no deflection in the floor. My rule of thumb is i try to not go more the 24" with out being some kind of support.

Gel coat is poly resin. Gelcoat is polyester resin just pigmented. You shouldn't go the other way around you should not put gelcoat over epoxy bec6it will not adhere good and couple possibly flake/chip off.

Hot Action Fishing and Fab I don’t know how to pm on youtube or if I can even so I will post it right here for ya. If you want a “finshed” look, then spend the time fairing the “slicks” good. In the non skid areas just fair flat and level. Apply you gelcoat “assuming your gelcoating?” Then wetsand and polish the slicks. Tape off your nonskid lines and here is the tip... slightly thicken your gelcoat with fumed silica to a batter type consistency. This will allow it to stand up and create peaks with the roller. You’ll have to play with the thickness to get it right but makes a great nonskid that when it starts to wear doesn’t show the sand/grit. I recommend doin’ a couple small test pieces to get the hang of it.
Also, it will be a little pointy/sharp, but you knock that down ever so slightly with some 600 grit or better yet... run the buffer over it with some compound!
yeah going with gel coat. I will defiantly try that thank you! I usually just get it faired out for the most part looking decent then do 3 layers of gelcoat rolled on that hides most of the imperfections then do the splatter paint or webbing all over to hide the rest of my imperfections
Hot Action Fishing and Fab awesome! When I do a “finished/smooth” job, I will use a coat of gelcoat for a primer coat. Just spray/roll it on then come back and knock it down with 80grit. This will fill all the little pin holes and act as a high build primer final fairing.

yes I am idk what im doing yet tho. the last 3 boats ive done I did a webbing and silca sand for a non skid and it hides all my faring imperfections.
