As somebody who struggles with clean line art, it REALLY bugs me that they don't have line stabilization of any kind. It's also a bummer that there isn't any way to create basic shapes, especially for all the motion graphic artists out there. I really hope they implement all that into the app sooner than later. Until then, I can see myself creating most of my drawings in the regular Procreate app and then just importing them into Dreams for compositing and more specific animation.

@@azukidere It is part of brush settings, but if you go into the basic settings of the Procreate app you're able to toggle it on/off no matter what brush you use. They're also missing the feature where you can draw a shape/line, hold it for a few seconds, and it straightens out.

I like it, but there are WAY too many basic missing features, like how the heck is it that I can't change the order of my layer in the drawing tab... that's like one of the most basic things you can expect to have in a software that involves drawing and isn't called MS Paint.

    • @sergeki108
      @sergeki108 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

You actually can :) just hold it and drag whenever you want, and if you want to stick it to the beginning of a timeline then hover around it a little bit and a red line will appear - hope that helps 😊

    • @TheBadasssnoopy
      @TheBadasssnoopy 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

@@sergeki108 I mean the layers that you draw on. Not the layers in the timeline. I know I can drag those. My problem is that if I draw line art on one layer and then want to put a layer under it with colors I can't just create another layer underneath and color, I have to make another track underneath and drawn on it which really overly complicates something that is a basic function of any drawing app I've ever used (other than MS Paint). I'm sure it will get better with updates, but I don't know... this feels more like a beta than a full price product.

It’s kind of part of procreate’s brand to be as minimalist as possible, which has caused me some frustration with both the drawing app and now dreams. I know some people prefer the cleaner, sparser interfaces - but I would much prefer a full tool bar than having to go on epic quests to find tools and features when I draw. It’s the same thing here: in order to turn on onion skin, I have to *click on the timestamp?* It doesn’t even look clickable. They hide it all away. Just add an onion-shaped button! It would be cute! A solution to the duplicating frames issue you mention at 8:36: grab one end of the frame you want to extend, tap a second finger on screen and then drag. That'll allow you to extend the frame you want to whatever length AND it'll push the frames around it so there's no gap. After that it played very smooth, no hiccups: I looked trough the example files, then started sketching with the flipbook, no problems. If you want to do a "ripple" edit, hold a finger on the screen while changing the length of a frame. The frames to the right will move left or right, staying attached to the right side of the frame you're changing.
There doesn't seem to be a way to automatically do this when you cut a frame. But you can get the same effect if you cut a frame, lengthen an adjacent frame to fill the space, then use the "ripple" trick while restoring the frame to its original length, pulling the frames to the right to the left along with it.
There should really be a ripple editing mode. In fact, it would make more sense as the default than the way it works now. I mean, why would you _want_ gaps between your frames under most circumstances?

I hope they add an easier way to do this, because it's kind of a pain to keep doing that, or to do it after the fact. It'd be nice if you could tell the program to hold frames in flipbook mode, or be able to select a bunch of drawings in the timeline and tell it to make them all hold for X number of frames.

Not sure if this is the case for other people, but when I am extremely zoomed in, so that I can see each individual frame, I only seem to be able to extend the length of the last frame in the sequence. If I try to extend any other, my pencil or finger will just select the frames next to it. I also was able to extend a first or middle frame if I moved the upcoming frames away and made empty space where I could extend the frame I was working on. I think it should just push the following frames forward instead of needing me to make empty space. If you have found a workaround, please share.

Some thing else in regard to resizing frames, I found that it works better if you attempt to shorten it before dragging outward in the same gesture. If you select an attempt to drag out word, it’s more likely to move the play header of the timeline.

I was looking into Dreams to see if it can replace my current animation setup, but I've concluded that the release day version can't. It has a lot of advanced features and capabilities that I was really excited about, however the lack of a selection tool, the lack of shape and line tools, the inability to edit brushes, and having to jump through hoops to make proper hold frames are dealbreakers. Not to mention, I've haven't even heard anyone bring up a mirrored/symmetric draw mode, which is pretty important to have for drawing head-on figures and artificial settings. I hope these features get added in future updates, but until they do I won't switch

Okay, I figured how to hold a frame for longer. If you have a frame ahead of the one you want to expand you have press hold and drag that frame the appropriate distance down the timeline. Then press and hold the edge of the frame you wish to expand and drag it.

I think itd help if they added a guide themselves, just a quick walkthrough of how to use things maybe with an example animation.
Really hoping for some more tools soon too as it feels a bit steep going into it at the moment. Like tou said the lasso was what i was looking for until i realised i need to just redraw each part in a different space or put it on its own track but that makes things a lot more complicated and longer to create.
I'd like a walkthrough of some of the inssne animations some people have made so far but I assume it's often not just 1 person making them

I’m glad to hear you’re beginning to like it - I was so excited before but I’ve been struggling all day not to throw my iPad across the room 😂 having to hold down with a finger from your other hand in order to extend a frame is so cumbersome for something so vital. Only being able to flip between *frames* and not drawings in flipbook mode means you can only animate comfortably on 1s and not flip between key poses, and there are no frame numbers unless you double click and zoom in ridiculously?? I have a lot of hope for this app and I’m looking forward to trying it out more. But man, the timeline is not very welcoming rn… 🎉

my app literally keeps crashing as I try to add audio, the only way I managed to work around it by adding a video with a white background with the sound that I needed :,) and even not counting that it crashed ab 3 times already (quite randomly too). It's very... frustrating. It's not like my iPad is old or my IOS is so not sure what's going on. also, I may be wrong, but the lasso tool is also missing as well as other features, transformation tool therefore is a bit clunky. I haven't found a way to edit the brushes in any sort of way, except for editing them in procreate and then exporting them to the dreams app. I could go on and on about what went wrong with the app for me but honestly, I'll just choose to believe in the devs and in their ability to make it all work in a patch or two.

Easing settings are like three clicks deep, popup menus seem unpredictable, no easing curves editing, no copying of keyframes, no looping (which I thought was in the promotional materials?) When moving/scaling by keyframe it’s unpredictable whether my selection scales by one axis, scales by both axes, or moves.
Frame by frame is definitely super smooth, but not mainly what I was looking for. I’m sticking by it but I do recognize the experience of frustration at this point

Dreams reminds me a lot of how Krita used to feel when they started to add animation Tools.
I love that mix of frame-by-frame focus with a little bit of motion graphics tools (to make tweaks without having to redraw each Frame) .
Unfortunately 2 essentials (essential for me at least) are missing right now.
    - A Lasso tool to make quick edits/transformations in the frame
    - The ability to move all selected frames at once for quick timing adjustments.
For now it is a nice middle ground between the cheaper yet jankyer RoughAnimator and the way more expensive Callipeg.

Hey Brad, thanks for all the videos you've made about Dreams as it rolls out. I've been eagerly awaiting the launch but have hit some issues with my 2nd gen iPad Pro (12") on Day One.
I hadn't realized the limitations on the number of content tracks (only 50) and no 4K. And the difficulty in actually moving elements of a drawing around is a drag, Procreate is just so much better for creating images
I have been meaning to upgrade my iPad, so I guess I have an excuse, but like you, I have struggled with not having a proper manual - I imagine they will put one out that is as great as the one they have for Procreate.
Bottom line, though: I love drawing with Procreate on the iPad, but this interface feels very cumbersome - I think I may end up returning to Procreate, After Effects, FCPX, Apple Motion, and Character Animator to bring my drawings to life.

The only way I found is to place each limb in a different track and to then group the tracks to make one limb's movement dependent on the other one (eg. lower arm and upper arm). That is not as straightforward as in Toonsquid, in which one can easily create hierarchies and position pivot points etc...

Though the stabilize tool features are handy. I find that it gets in my way sometimes. I either hold it down too long and I get results I didn’t want, or I hold it down and it doesn’t go into the shape I want. So although it helps with clean line art I personally would prefer if there was an option to enable it and disable that feature and only have it there when absolutely needed. I already have a hard enough time getting the right size brush I want because of the pressure touch feature on the pen. Don’t get me wrong, I love the pressure touch feature. It’s super handy. But sometimes I have to spend so much time getting the exact size line that I want. Or say I wanna draw a circle and I do the finger tap to make it perfect. Sometimes one side of the line of the circle with be thicker than the other so then I have to loop it several times in order to make it the same thickness size.

I spent the time and watched 3 to 4 tutorials today. I had prepared a cooked turkey group, with two legs, two arms and two hands. And a quick background. I wanted to make it dance. Thought that would be a cool thing since it came out for thanksgiving weekend. I definitely got frustrated. I’m sure it had to do with lack of experience. Once I got it imported the way it wanted, it didn’t anchor like I hoped it would. I’m going to have to figure out if I can multigroup inside a character group. if that makes sense. Cuz the hand didn’t anchor to the arm but the place in the screen. So moving wasn’t as easy as I hoped. I found that undoing is faster than fixing. And really I just hurried up to not make a 10 second disappointment last more than an hour. It wasn’t buggy, I just don’t know what I’m doing exactly. I’ll use it to make super shorts, or making comic strips more interesting. I’m no animator, and my only attempt on Procreate was cutting out mouths and frame by framing them, even though they were short, it was time consuming to put them together in iMovie and looked janky, and at the very least getting this, saves all of those steps, and probably will make a better version of what I initially did the first time I tried. Your animation was pretty awesome, can’t wait to see more of ur videos on dreams. Thanks.

So I was trying to do an animation of my OC just yawning from her front facing profile view and for the longest time I couldn’t figure out how to get to an option where I see the previous drawing frame on a blank one just so it’s consistent with the movement. Turns out you can’t do that, you just have to do something obscure like hit the running time clock to view your onion skins.

Here's an idea for what might be a good evergreen video: Just a quick video (but not a "short"), showing different levels of diagonal line wobble. You can explain which levels are tolerable for which kinds of drawing. And then show exactly why, and how different levels of wobble affect different kinds of drawing, painting, and note taking.
I thought of this while helping someone on Reddit. I wished you had a video about this that I could send them a link to. They were unsure if their stylus/laptop combo would be good enough because they had no experience with what good and bad looked like.
You could likely get a lot of the video from old clips. Edit it together, and do a voice-over.

I am kind of dissapointed because I have an ipad air 3rd generation and although it was advertised to support it, it's crashed 6 times in the past 2 hours :/
I still think it has a lot of potential, though I think I'll have to come back to it once they've added more features and when I'm eventually forced to upgrade Ipads

    Hey!!
I am a bit confused between pc and iPad for a storytime animation as pc supports Adobe animate and iPad supports procreate dreams so which once is better procreate dreams or Adobe animate
    Thanks...

Great review!! Thank you. So since i am a complete newbie to animation, i am actually enjoying this app. Clip Studio or after effects (free trial) were very overwhelming for me.
What i did to animate a cat wagging its tail is i drew all the layers in procreate, (with elements i wanted to move on different layers) then dragging my file over and selected “convert layers to tracks”.
So for simple movement this was nice

I'm disappointed in how many basics they left out, no selection tools, no hold to draw a smooth shape, no double tap to switch to eraser, you cant turn off hold to color pick, and lot of common animation functions are hidden. For me this release is a mess and far from being worth the 20 dollars I spent on it. This feels very beta or alpha release, its not ready.

The animation was AMAZING Brad!!!! Ever think of making a channel that just contains video animation shorts where you retell funny history moments? 😁😁😁😁

Nice review Brad, but I just wonder, do you feel that the drawing experience in Procreate Dreams is somehow not as good as in the original Procreate? Like the pen sensitivity feels off, do you know how to setup the pressure sensitivity in Procreate Dreams?

What’s your opinion on procreate dreams VS toonsquid? I wa super hyped to get procreate dreams, but sadly my device doesn’t support iOS 16 so my only current option is toonsquid, which I personally enjoy but would love to know your take on this.

I was using procreate dreams yesterday and a couple of times things happened like a track disappearing and I was thinking ‘what! A bug? What’s happened?’ And I discovered today that it was when I was pinching in to zoom into the timeline I was accidentally undoing things. I really don’t the like the two fingers undo/three fingers redo thing because I so easily undo something (and not immediately realise as I am focussing on where I am zooming in my timeline to). It’s really annoying. I wish they just used a simple undo/redo button.
