Kudos for 10th place, but MEGA kudos for being just under 6 minutes off 1st place. That is a huge achievement given the insane average speeds! Hats off to ya!
Your videos, from the very beginning, are about educating other riders. So your chit chat about tires and the results from wind tunnel testing fit perfectly with your well established philosophy. Keep it up, this information is what makes your channel so popular.
Your Top 10 finish and Lachlans win have made Unbound 2024 an absolute classic. Gravel vibes high from this one. Congrats, amazing. And thank you for still sharing everything, inspiring for many of us.
One reason why your race recaps are so popular is that you're excellent at telling a compelling story. On a cellular and instinctual level humans absolutely love a good story. Its why we can't wait to hear how you finished 17th. Great job on so many levels
The level of competition in Unbound is so much higher than 5-8 years ago. As a 50+ master I was at the very front of the race at 1.5hrs in 2017. Thats a distant dream now. To earn a 10th in this field is a quantum improvement and just huge result. Very nice ride.🎉
Congratulations, insane result. People underestimate the effort that went into this kind of race result. The training, the mechanical preparation, the nutrition, the tactics, the team coordination and of course the mental strength to hold the power and withhold the physical strain on the body for that long. Really happy to see that all of that effort awarded you with a phenomenal placement in this notorious race. 🔥
Proud of my parasocial friend! Been following your progression for ages and love how you've been able to maximize yourself, both from a training perspective as well as an equipment one. It's quite inspiring and I hope that you continue to improve and achieve awesome results!
Dude, I was really stoked for you when I saw the results sheet! You trully earned that! And as Francis said in the wild ones podcast, you're largely responsible for the shape gravel racing is taking. Cheers from Brazil!
Dylan, firstly, Chapeau for the amazing race and top ten finish, seeing you at the end of the race under the tent with Lachlan and the others was so heart warming. Chris from Nero show “predicted “ you coming in 17th as usual, I’m getting my popcorn ready for their next show when they will inevitably have a wee chat about this race and how optimized yours and all the other bikes were for this race.
I can’t believe how happy I am for you. I’ve been following you for a while and really enjoying your videos and also a big believer in big tires and now you do this! Thank you. I will be forwarding your video to all my moronic friends who insist 38 gravel tires.
Please don't shut up about tires!! Loved this year's race and agree you should be SOOO proud of your race. Unbelievably cool!! Congrats and good luck with the rest of the year!
To me this continues to be entertaining content. Hopefully one day people will have drones and ear pieces to communicate with coaches. Not that I wanna see the Tour de France style bike riding but if Dylan had at least two other guys that would do work for him he would be a contender for 1st next year. That being said I’d love to see some more fluidly in the feed zones. Sofia’s viral pit stop last year was spot on how it should be. Stay hungry Dylan, I believe you’ll be on the podium next year. Your gear was exactly what was needed and knowing the course from this year will make a huge difference.
@@Emolokz Backwards Hat Dylan. As a character he use to represent an all encompassing "that guy" of cycling. But because actual Dylan is such a deep nerd, whom we love and come to this channel for, sometimes BHD brings us back to reality. On top of that, BHD helps us realize that we are all both nerdy about the sport and more of "that guy" than we'd like to admit.
Man! When you get BHD to compliment you, you’ve arrived. Congratulations, Dylan. I can’t wait for your training video. I’ve been cycling for more years than you are old, yet you, young man, inspire me!
Many congratulations on a splendid ride. By the sound of this we should be either getting mountain bike gravel bike tyres. Or converting our existing mountain bike to drop handlebars 😃
Excellent. We've been waiting to watch your recap, explanation, and indepth assessment of your day. Truly the highlight of the event for those of us not present. PS - Congratulations on your result!
This is BIG Dylan....what a ride! Seeing the cycling legend Zap helping a young gun like you at the feedzone gave me a extra wide smile...he is my age, a true punk rocker and how nice is that!
Sure, the finish position was a real breakthrough and monumental. I get it. But what I appreciate as a long-time racer is how Dylan kept thinking AND acting to win and advance, how to bridge with Beers, how to get away from his group at the end, etc. Would have been easy to just settle or sit on. To have Greg Van Avermaet chase you and out-sprint you, well, that’s because you went for the podium when it mattered. Which a perennial 17th isn’t supposed to do. Love the attitude. Love the strategy. Just a superior effort all the way around. Much respect. 🫡 ✊
For almost all racers, some sprint training wouldn't go astray, look at the difference in leg speed between GVA and DJ. When I was racing seriously, I took Greg Lemonds advice, do sprints twice a week, all year round. I can recall many times it paid off.
@@gregmorrison7320 Dylan is a serious coach as well as a professional cyclist. I’m sure he knows how to train for sprint speed. But just like all specialties, some have inherent genetic qualities and some don’t. When testing the US National Road Team at the OTC, the difference in vertical leap (a good analogue for sprinting, explosive power) was 15”. That’s huge! Some had hops, some didn’t, and that simple test confirmed what we knew about those cyclists in terms of sprinting. (FWIW, the difference between the least and our track match sprinters was 30”.) Sprint training helps, of course, but Dylan was being objective about his chances in that case and like a beast, he actually went for it at a time when it best suited his lack of top-end speed. I believe his last-ditch move also got him a better placing, that is, not last in that group. I’m totally with him on that. And FWIW, sprint adaptations are quick to build and quick to abate. So sprinting in the off season has almost no effect on racing unless you’re doing some serious technique work with a coach to improve your ability to generate explosive power. Doing sprint work all the time just means you reach a plateau and stay there. Virtually everything in training has opportunity costs. I think Dylan did just fine but to your point, it would be interesting to hear how much actual sprint training he did going into Unbound. ☮️
Yes!! Ah man, i was excited in the lead-up to this race, and was stoked to hear that the nerdy obsession bore such wonderful fruit. Congratulations man. Also i love the way the bike looks. Can't wait to see when the competition step their game up next year!
Amazing congratulations for yout top 10 finish and your fastest time! Crazy how much that race evolved. I haven't ridden the ubound or any US gravel race since I live in Germany. But I enjoy my 2.2" tires on my 3T for quite a while. Since I changed, I rarely had a puncture, and due to more dampening, I feel less fatigued even after 8 hour rides. Congrats again and hopefully we see another 7 place improvement for your next edition.
Mann, I'm so happy for you......Been following all of your Unbounds and other content, and this was a definite major breakthrough for you. You deserve it and I think you finally figured a few things out........
Totally agree with you Dylan, Mtb tyres in size 2.00 to 2.2 are ideal. Hence I feel that a hardtail makes an ideal platform to build a great gravel racer. The only challenge is the chain ring size limitation. That however is a design problem that can be overcome as offset drivetrains have been done before and are the way forward for gravel . My 2p
Not gonna lie, I've never seen Dylan genuinely smile that much until that post race interview. Proud of you dude!
His smile on face full of dirt looks shining 🙃 probably the best makeup ever
Such a gem he is!

I did Unbound in 2021 on a hardtail mountain bike, which made it a piece of cake from a technical standpoint. No flat tires, no other problems.
