    Here's the archive of VRML worlds, objects, animations and games that were sent to Vin. I added a ReadMe and a couple other text files, plus dropped a few extra .wrl files in there.
    I was going to link it in a video showing off the files but I didn't get around to that.

    For 1997 and home computer tech the animation on Floops is crazy smooth. Like genuinely impressive, since it took big work station setups to crank out stuff like reboot in 1994 onward.

      honestly the vrml format hasnt changed that much, and is still in pretty wide use as a cad format. The file structure has changed a bit from awkward hard to parse text, to xml in x3d but the nodes and attributes have just about stayed the same. Vrml 2 came out in 97 so he could be like a tech demo for that.

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Or how games like DKC literally had to be made on the same computers as Toy Story because that's just how hard it was to render smooth 3D animation even for the sake of prerendering.

    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐀 𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐀 yes and also no. They fully animated them and then converted those movements frame by frame. The result required an absurd amount of coding magic, and the tech was still SUPER OBTUSE and complicated and cost an absolute fuckton.
      So obtuse and dated in fact that when they made the GBA ports, the way they got the assets was literally by scrolling through levels and sprites in debug mode on an emulator and just rebuilding the mechanics on top of them, because that was genuinely easier and more reliable than using the floppies they had on a decade old SGI computer.

    • @alfo2804
      @alfo2804 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Warboss Gegguz Actually, no, it was because most (if not all) of the assets were completely lost. If it was just because it was 'too hard' then they wouldn't have used the original assets in the Donkey Kong Land games or in DKC GBC

      @@JacobKinsley Apples and oranges. Offering a "Virtual Reality" course in the 2020s that deals with VRML instead of working with HMD hardware is a pretty clear misimplication on the university's part. There's no charitable reason they would do that - everyone with any power over this would have to be grossly ignorant to do this on accident. Even then, it's a lot more likely that the university wanted to have a "Virtual Reality" course to make themselves sound more impressive and lure in interested students, and figured VRML was the absolute cheapest possible thing they could pretend they meant all along. Because why actually have the impressive course when you can save money by tricking people?
      C is a language that's still being used. It's still incredibly useful, so being taught C when you wanted Python is okay. No one uses VRML anymore. It's a massively outdated standard that you need to jump through hoops to even access today. Being taught VRML when you wanted to learn how to write VR apps is a fucking insult.

      @Acceleration Quanta the fact anyone liked such a brainless and immature take has further decreased what little faith in humanity I had left.
      Like, I fully agree that American and European copyright laws are broken. I joke regularly that a communist country is more true to the free market ideal in that regards than the supposedly capitalist US because the government is in bed with monopolies thanks to regulators.
      ... but to say "corporations shouldn't exist" is effectively telling me you don't know what a corporation is without telling me you don't know what a corporation is. Its some anti-work redditor tier shit.
      A business being a corporation is effectively self-determined and/or structural factor and exists for tax reasons. It's also a better choice in basically all regards compared to defining yourself/your Business as, say, an LLC.
      So most businesses of even moderate size are corporations. They may be private and therefore not traded on Nasdaq or other markets, but they're still corporations.
      The main thing that enables corporate entities to act this way are regulators/lobbying which is a RESULT of regulation rather than a lack of it, or in the case of YT/Alphabit and Twitch/Amazon they're private entities that enforce strict copyright BS for the sake of staying in the good Graces of other large entities.
      I pray that one day I'll be able to bitch about the American market WITHOUT some college student anti-work flower children muddying the waters with hippy bullshit...

    I have to say as someone who _was_ a very literal 90's kid, VRML is definitely something I didn't grow up with - that is, I never knew about this until *today.* Seriously, my childhood memories of computer-stuff consisted of Living Books games (especially Mercer Mayer), a Sesame Street game courtesy of Creative Wonders/ABC, Descent II, Raptor: Call of the Shadow, edutainment games from Jump Start (especially Kindergarten and 1st Grade), and of course, Flash Animation stuff (especially Joe Cartoons and Newgrounds).
    Suffice to say, I missed out on VRML, but miraculously not on the DVD player, Playstation 1, bulky cream-colored PCs, VHS, Cartoon Network (Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, Ed Edd n' Eddy), and the other stuff I lightly mentioned above.
    All things considering, I'm glad that you're setting aside your time to look over these obscure things from way back when, even if it's just to laugh at the absurdity of what people might have thought was the future of technology back then. I just got done with writing a converter between vrml and my companies proprietary format. The formatting of the file itself is a real handful and can have some horrible memory efficiency. Its not json but its close enough. object arrays are still held in square brackets and key value pairs in curly brackets, except there is shit thrown in the middle of it all like the DEF attribute, which assigns a name for later use. The issue is that vmrl is extremely human readable. Its text, you can open it up and know exactly what its doing. The problem is that in larger files being human readable becomes an issue. As I previously pointed out the DEF attribute, these nodes require either constant compression and decompression of shape objects or some metadata handy work to keep objects compressed unless needed and recycle previously calculated values. Sounds simple and it would be if your boss didn't tell clients that your software could read their bullshit nonsense garbage vrmls that dont adhere to widely accepted definitions. But I digress. I have written vrml conversion utilities apparently better than blender, isodraw, and meshlab. I wouldnt be tooting my own horn if those other products could have converted the files I needed to x3d but fuck them they let me down and I wasted 2 weeks of my life refactoring code as a result.
