Nick Murray is the perfect example of an adult that has maintained his childhood sense of fun and humor without the "real word" changing him. Something I hope everyone takes note of.
This man probably bought this car for next to nothing in 1994. He is a rich man now. These early Turbos are skyrocketing in value. Props to him for holding on to it all these years. Such an awesome car.
They weren't cheap when they came out! They have appreciated in value to be sure but Porsche has never been a poor man's car, so 'next to nothing' is a stretch.
I have a pristine 1979 Porsche 930 that I have maintained myself for 20 years. This is a total driving machine that will not be for sale until I die. I love my car and would have no other. It was in a showroom in Dallas,TX for 10 years and then in a showroom in Springfield , MO for 7 years and then I bought it. This is my favorite car and it will not be sold. I use it for my psycho therapy on bad days. Only my direct family or friends can drive it. Mileage presently is 27,816 today. Read and weep. Ed Saylor
"That's what it's all about..." You are 100% correct! A beautiful machine perfectly maintained - and loved. The people who want to take these wonderful machines off the street will never know the pure exhilaration, or joy, of driving one of these moving works of art. Automotive engineering at its finest! The 930 is a beast! 👏👏👏👏👏
***** My dad had dreamed his whole life for a one, then when he realized that he is rolling in money, he bought a 997 instead. Due to he didnt want the old equipment + interior etc. Shoulda have bought aircooled one :P
A friend had an early 80's 930. First car I drove to exceed 140 mph, took it to 165 or so on a deserted Montana 2 lane hwy. . This is a beautiful specimen.
Awesome car. love these older 911's. a guy i know took me for a drive in twin turbo 911 with 700 odd horses, and up to 300km/h on the highway. talk about neck snapping acceleration. loved them ever since them
wonderful!..thanks guys for uploading this video!..i own a 1977 911 but not turbo..with my 2.7 ltr 5 speed i sometimes think i have a turbo! your relaxed lay-back Sunday drive makes life so special! thanks guys!
There no correct way of modding this car without drastically lowering its value. The 930 is the most amazing car to own. Selling my 29k mile 930 in 2010 is regrettable.
great vid! my dad has a 1977 turbo carrera 3.0L been in love with the sound, the look and the BOOST ever since i was 10 when we brought it home. We just picked up our second '77 last november. cant wait to get it on the road and boost next to my dad. Im 27 now.
Those wheels......... Man, those wheels. Beautiful. And, they go with that color of paint, too. Oh, yeah, I nearly forgot. Somebody in the video needs to start reviewing cars on a regular basis from now on, too. Nice location for the review, also. Great, great job, man.
The way the wind goes over the hood and roof and right into the inter cooler it's one of the best car designs in history! Plus the faster you go the more pressure on the wing and it just plants the car to the ground.
i think the 930 turbos if left clean will reach above 100K and above in 10 years, they are pretty cars, and frankly i think their owners can't help but drive them so the ones that go un touched will be rare and quite valuable.
Excellent video and gorgeous car. The owner has taken amazing care of it too with tasteful and Sensible mods and what a nice guy for letting you have a drive. 👍🏻😎
That is one thing that modern turbos don't have -- the big *zoom* when the turbo kicks in. They manage boost better than the old cars and you just don't get *hit* like you did in the old ones. They're smoother and safer, no doubt, but that old-school *feel* is missing.
I own a pair of FD RX7s and they're already pretty much my dream car, but the 930 911 has been my dream car from the beginning and still is. I'm just unlikely to ever afford one. This one is a doozy, I like the tastefully done upgrades.
One of the baddest cars ever! When I was 15 learning to be a Plumber my boss had a red with tan interior 1979! He sold it to one of the workers that had no idea about Porsche's! It had something wrong with the turbo and I loved and i knew quit a bit even as a young kid. I actually drove it down the street he was so mad at me i didn't even have a permit but I had to drive it. If only I used my head I could of probably said I'll work for free just give me the car. Or we could of worked out some kind of a deal. It was guard red beige interior had polished fuch's on it and that 930 wide wide body. I always kick myself that's one car you get and never let go!!!
'Widow maker' - yes. Up until the 959 (which was the next one) they still had a rear suspension layout based on the VW Beetle. The 930 really showed that was not the way to go with modern low profile tyres, because the camber changed all over the place. And the folk lore / conventional wisdom was already set in stone that the 'problem' was the layout of the car, engine out the back. With the 959 they fixed it, that has modern suspension design, and all subsequent 911s have been like that. But now, 35 years later, we're still hearing experts lecture us about engine at the back and how that will kill you... Rubbish. The weight distribution of a modern 911 is much the same as a mid engine exotic, like a 458 or an Elise. And the modern ones no longer have bite-you-in-the-a$$ handling, but the legend is there for all time. The other reason it has a reputation, it was quite quick & powerful for a '79 car. Look to bikes for a moment. The original Kawa 900 got a rep like that, because it was just faster than anything people had used before. I wouldn't say it handled well, by modern standards, but it wasn't any worse than plenty of other bikes of the time. It was just rather quicker. It could and did bit you on the bum if you didn't know what you were doing. It did (like the Porsche) bite quite a few people, who then went away and figured out reasons why the accident was the fault of the car, not the expert driver... Think about it - the fellow who has just destroyed his brother / friend / neighbour's brand new Porsche, may not be the best source of accurate & honest appraisal. Lies have been told, lots of them...
Henrik Hvitfeldt Really? I stand corrected. I thought they used a swing axle design based on the Beetle. I know they changed it rather dramatically with the 959. And I know camber would change rather dramatically on lift-off, and possibly toe-out as well. I have seen that demonstrated. You could watch the car go over a series of dips and watch the camber change all over the place, just like a beetle.
moejr1974 True. Until quite recently, you could also get the GT2, which was a 911 T without the 4 wheel drive. (And the boost turned up a bit.) I hear they plan to do one more release of the GT2, on this generation of 911, but only near the end of its model run, so about 2017 or '18.
Shane Barrios It sort of was and sort of wasn't. It was their supercar, cost no object. But it stayed very much with the 911 for layout and form factor and ... it was a 911 for the future, and future 911s were not exactly based on that one, but some parts found their way from the 959 to all the 911s that followed. The 4 wheel drive system, became standard on following turbos, and the rear suspension from the 959 became the basic rear suspension for all the 911s that followed. It was a completely new design, and it fixed pretty much all of what had been wrong with 911 rear-ends since the beginning.
Great car. For me the best of the air cooled turbo 911's. I've owned a 84 3.2 Carrera for the last 13 year's and can totally relate to putting a smile on your face every time I go out. Pity Porsche will never make car's like this again. Great review.
All that talk about over boost and he wouldn't turn her up for ya!? Nice video though! Love the cream, and those wheels! Was worried the 'widow maker' feel would be gone when the owner said boost came on at 2500, nice to see it old school and laggy like it should be - I for one enjoy driving a boosted car, I think it's great where turbo technology is, and is going. But this car must have been an absolute gem to drive!
+blackericdenice It's a test drive. He'll hardly have many chances or a lot of time for it. Also, if your car can't take that and a lot more, there is something seriously wrong with it.
As an owner of two air-cooled 911's (911SC and Carrera 3.2), having had five in the family ('72, '76 & '83) and having test-driven newer models, including the awesome 992, there's no way I'd go back to 60's technology, and lack of space.
I live in Stamford , on the westcherster line , I love driving those roads . Heaven for enthusiasts . Especially my car . what do I drive ? Thats "CLASSIFIED "
I was lucky enough to drive one of these a few weeks ago! Same year but it was black. It was the first turbo car I had ever driven and man I really want one now! Looks like you had a good time as well!
Ha, Nick you actually looked nervous in this video. Tell Al, "Thanks" and to stop calling that thing a 930. It's more like a 930+. I too liked Harry's video on his 930. All the cars of my youth are going crazy in price, oh well.
Im not sure what year it was, but when Porsche went to the wide rear fenders and the 50 series rear tires, combined with the whale tail rear spoiler, those are the best looking Porsche 911's ever built.
13:21 der Turbo hat gerade verlobt, yo - very nice review and commentary of a well-kept 930. Agree with others about the wheels, otherwise this is a beautiful specimen, and so nice that you were able to drive and share the car with us!
I know they have shot up like a rocket but they deserve it i love em. I also love BMW which I drive. Suspension all done all the bushings done by Power flex carbon fiber strut towers wheels spaced right. I'd give that Porsche a run for it's money through those hills and corners for sure. I have a few goody's done to my car's engine as well it goes good!

Current adjustable boost pressure 0.7 to 1.55 bar. And 85 mph in legal in Texas. As for the expense :) 15-19 miles per hour $240; 20-29 miles per hour $265; 30+ miles per hour or more over the limit $300 Thus the tax is only $265 to run 114 and less. However, on the open road, 95 mph to 135 mph is best. On the TX country roads, super-elevated turns will test you skill at 70 mph ... that's where the Turbo S excels. Did I mention front/rear [51/49] weight balance? Tempting?
+Rojo Kelly That is indeed an awesome car you have. I remember my first 'fast ride' in a fast car was in 1991 on a nice Michigan fall day when I was 20 years old, our neighbor and friend of my parent's took me for a ride in his show-room condition 1986 Porsche 944 turbo. It was a nice gun metal gray with black centered wheels with about a 3 inch chrome 'rim' around the edges and black leather interior and a sunroof. He had a computer chip in it that added a bit of hp and torque to it. We went on some country back roads in Michigan and he wound it out with the turbo going through the gears and we were quickly passing a car that was doing the 55 mph speed limit and you could hear that magnificent whistle of the turbo as we quickly got up to 120 mph. As the mailboxes all blurred into one I became a little paranoid and found myself saying "OKAY, OKAY" and he let off the gas. I was amazed that I actually got a little scared, but what an awesome car!
Bought my 930 (1987) brand new from the dealer in Connecticut (Traynor, in Fairfield). Grand Prix White w/Burgundy leather interior. Sunroof, Limited Slip, and Sport Seats. $62k out the door including Connecticut sales and the Federal gas guzzler tax ;-) Ordered in October, 1986 from the factory. Wonder if it is still on the road? Kick myself for selling. The '87 had the ET Come Home 3rd brake light ;-)
I had the chance to drive the 993 Turbo a few years ago and it was for me the most amazing car I've ever sat in... Brutal power. I hope one day you do a review !
I was wondering whether or not it was chiffon white or a custom colour as it looks so dark in the shadows. My dad had a 1980 year 930 turbo in chiffon white with green leather from new. Such a rare an unusual colour!
A friend of mine had one of these. He was a stock broker who liked a few drinks and dabbled in white powdery nose candy. He hit a tree and got arrested. He drives a truck now
Look at the gauges always had the best lay out! Porsche 911 still my all time favorite car! If I could have any one it would be the GT 2 RS they made a couple of years ago. I'd take it in red with the carbon fiber hood/trunk! 620 H.P. twin turbo!
Thanks for the Bruce Anderson reference! I just saw this and ordered the book on Amazon. Ive just bought an ‘86 911 SSE Targa - so pretty much same body and suspension and brake set up as the 930. Will think about mods - if any! The book will help! Thanks.
That guy has taken wonderful care of his car. Give him props.
Nick Murray is the perfect example of an adult that has maintained his childhood sense of fun and humor without the "real word" changing him. Something I hope everyone takes note of.
BiIIy The Kid. This really is true and I wished more adults kept this same emotion as they grew older
i try to 😄
This man probably bought this car for next to nothing in 1994. He is a rich man now. These early Turbos are skyrocketing in value. Props to him for holding on to it all these years. Such an awesome car.
No, not with the mods he did and 130k miles!! $80k max
approx $60, not enough to make someone rich
yeah but if you had such car, you wouldn't sell it though? Even if it has risen in value.
This one is priceless
They weren't cheap when they came out! They have appreciated in value to be sure but Porsche has never been a poor man's car, so 'next to nothing' is a stretch.
My dad had an 84 and out of all the Porsches he owned over the years, this is the one THAT ALWAYS made me smile.

is it true that it tends to snap oversteer when at the limit? no abs and that truly makes it a driver's car
+Revan Skywalker yeah. especially with the engine being behind the rear axle, that snap oversteer is deadly.
Your kid Cameron is gonna put it right through the back wall of your garage straight down into the ravine
"That's what it's all about..."
You are 100% correct!
A beautiful machine perfectly maintained - and loved.

These have to be one of the absolute *best* car reviews on TH-cam. Thank you so much for making them, Nick!

Damn aircooled porsche prices.

I know my dad has one.
Mistake.
@GoneHiking should've bought one of these, a nice E30 M3 and E28 + E34 M5
GoneHiking you are right #!! Glad we got one a few years ago! !! What do you think? 😎😎😎 th-cam.com/video/Q7H6T2FWPZA/w-d-xo.html

I met this Porsche In 1976 and I loved 911 turbos!!!
Arguably one of the prettiest Porsches or even one of the prettiest car ever made😍😍
Drove a very similarly modified 930 last year.. that boost is really addictive!! great video
Awesome car. love these older 911's. a guy i know took me for a drive in twin turbo 911 with 700 odd horses, and up to 300km/h on the highway. talk about neck snapping acceleration. loved them ever since them
My dad bought a gold one in 79.He drove me to school, and the other kids hated me.😁😁😁
What a beautiful 930. I love the color!
Loved the car and really liked the colour too, and the sound, and the looks and just everything!

What a car. Love when an owner is passionate and giddy talking about it even after all those years of ownership.
great vid! my dad has a 1977 turbo carrera 3.0L been in love with the sound, the look and the BOOST ever since i was 10 when we brought it home.
Sweating like a what...@11:51?
LMFAO.
You really deserve 1 millon plus subscriber. Epic car, great, intimate work as usual.
"Sweating like a rapist"
Stunning 911 - keep them coming Nick!
Great review. I don't think I've seen anyone have this fun in a car in a long time.
Cheers!

comment aged pretty well! Now 3.2 Carrera's crawling up to 100K
thanks for the viddy. these old turbos are mythic, and this is on another level.
Cool owner to share his love of Porsche with you
i got to sit in a 86 turbo carrera when i was little, and it cemented my love for porsche at that age.
Great job Nick and props to the car owner too!
Al seems like great company love the conversation and of course THAT car.
Excellent video and gorgeous car. The owner has taken amazing care of it too with tasteful and Sensible mods and what a nice guy for letting you have a drive. 👍🏻😎
i had to stop watching porn for this

Respect ✊🏼
this is the real porn!
what a great car. The owner has done well to keep it how it is
I've always loved Porsche. BUT there's something about an older style Porsche that I love so much! This thing is a beauty
the sound that the doors make when they open and close. there's just NOTHING like that slightly metallic solid clliink!! nice!!!
That is one thing that modern turbos don't have -- the big *zoom* when the turbo kicks in. They manage boost better than the old cars and you just don't get *hit* like you did in the old ones. They're smoother and safer, no doubt, but that old-school *feel* is missing.
Excellent review, the 930 is simply amazing ultimate collection car.
An absolutely beautiful car!
What a beautiful day for a drive. Love it.

so nice...first sports car I was driven in, at age 12. Thx for several great reviews of various great cars!
Great car. For me the best of the air cooled turbo 911's. I've owned a 84 3.2 Carrera for the last 13 year's and can totally relate to putting a smile on your face every time I go out. Pity Porsche will never make car's like this again.

Love that beige, so smooth.

Truly a beautiful car!
A beautiful car and a nice owner. A good informative video too. Thanks.
wow that color combo + the HRE wheels looks amazing thank god its not a garage queen Al actually drives it!
Nick you should be the new host for top gear! Beautiful car and excellent review.

Nick Murray They're hosting auditions and anyone can apply!
awesome review nick. as always.
beutiful car, thx to both of you for putting up this video. 👍👍
Thank you so much Nick I do love Porsches and this review it's really well made. Next one the 993 :-P
This was an absolutely wonderful video! I was smiling just as much watching it as you were making it. :-)
another great review! keep up the good work.

A really nice Porsche Nick. The only thing is that it doesn´t have the original wheels on it. Thanx for the video... Petr from Czech, Europe.
Was that John Madden in the car with you? lol Great review by the way!
Cool owner. He knows how to enjoy his car as opposed to letting it sit in the garage.
Nick your hand placement is criminal!

How cool was that?! Nicely done.

I can’t say I’d be happy to give my 911 to a random sweaty kiwi 😂
Nick: when you are ready for another Porsche spin, make a video; come drive me 1988 944 (952) Turbo S.
+Rojo Kelly Where is this fine beast?
+Nick Murray Pick you up at Dallas / Fort Worth Airport.
+Rojo Kelly Original 78,000 miles. STOCK: Horsepower @ RPM -- 217 @ 5,800 -- [247 @ 6,000], Torque @ RPM -- 243-lbs.ft. @ 3,500 -- [258-lbs.ft. @ 4,000], Curb weight -- 3,195 pounds, Gearbox -- Five-speed manual
0-60 MPH -- 5.5 seconds, 1/4 mile ET -- 14.2 seconds @ 100.5 MPH, Top speed -- 162 MPH
*Road & Track, June 1988
Stock Boost 12 psi(0.83 bar)
Mine needed some rehabilitation due to age - Incentive to drive: Mine 315 @ 4,000 rpm, 0-60 minus 5.0 sec, 175 mph +/- (not tested), wide-band O2, test pipe, dual-waste gate, fat exhaust (++ Lindsey Racing) all street legal.
Current adjustable boost pressure 0.7 to 1.55 bar.
And 85 mph in legal in Texas. As for the expense :) 15-19 miles per hour $240; 20-29 miles per hour $265; 30+ miles per hour or more over the limit $300
Thus the tax is only $265 to run 114 and less. However, on the open road, 95 mph to 135 mph is best. On the TX country roads, super-elevated turns will test you skill at 70 mph ... that's where the Turbo S excels. Did I mention front/rear [51/49] weight balance?
Tempting?
+Rojo Kelly 217 is *typo* sorry M8
I chucked at "damn bmw drivers" 20:57 haha.
I had the chance to drive the 993 Turbo a few years ago and it was for me the most amazing car I've ever sat in... Brutal power. I hope one day you do a review !
What a beauty !
Chiffon White- the most beautiful paint to sample Porsche offered from 78 to 84. Rare in a 930. I had a 84 targa in the color.
He drives a truck now
such a good looking car
stunning - probably the best looking porscha ever made. i own the fried - egg 996. love my car but this is something else
Beautiful Porsche, anyone thinking about one of these should have scored back in the 90's, prices crazy now.
One of the Porsches I wish I would have bought back then as well.
Thanks.
beautiful car
I have cfs and am dreaming to own / drive this car. From my current position in my bed, this came pretty close. Thanks!
