What I find working for me (as well as the tips given in the video) was to actually do the motion very fast and coming to a full stop at ball contact after the usage of wrist and the pinch mentioned in the video. Doing the motion more quickly increases the spin dramatically, however it will take a lot of practise. Beware this is only what I've discovered recently, and might not work for everyone. Very good tips, guys, it really helped my development for creating heavier backspin.
Well done chaps. Btw, just to let the newbies, that most pros do not use this serve coz it creates so many attacking opportunities for the opponents. However, this serve is a great training to develop feeling n control for your other serves
A few things to improve this is to get lower on the serve - the contact point closer to the table. Also angle the bat past horizontal and actually brush diagonally upwards rather than straight across. Bear in mind the rubbers you have have a big impact on the amount of spin you can generate. Also some balls are too smooth and they just slide across the table and you will not see the ball coming back to you as much.
OMG this is life saving, all of my serves are going off to the sides and didn't realize i'm adding some mysterious sidespin, thanks for the great content!!!
@@yaku_8856 yea I was trying random serves like top spin and side spin then I did that back spin serve and it worked pretty well then I watched this video and learened to do it consistently
I would love to see the next step for this serve: how to do a :"ghost" style backspin serve, but to learn now to disguise the spin, how to do topspin with the same basic motion, but pulling up on the bat, etc.
You are my role model you have taught me the best way for doing the ghost serve and I have learned it. You are best in the world you should open a table tennis coaching centre and it will be e running very good

Great to hear Momchil, as we mentioned in the video this serve will improve your other serves to, simply because it will teach you better feeling on the ball.
i really appreciate the effort u guys put in and according to me this is the best and the most detailed video for a backspin serve...i have been trying this serve for the past 4 years but couldn't do it...now i can master this too...thnx a lot guys...this video was a gr8 success
He’s a man of his word, look at him he teaches us how to master it but his first serve didn’t work. This confirms that he put in a lot of effort to make this video so appreciate this video
Hey Stephen, thanks for the awesome comment! This is the best where I have found to teach people this serve. Many coaches adopt and use this approach to, especially in step 1.
A lot of player where I practice this the way I serve is magic. Trying to teach them how to keep it short and low. I show how to reverse serve to trick opponent it a lot to learn where they are.
I do this serve for years now but on my last training i noticed what you also do in the video. We are throwing the ball backwards. After i noticed that i tried to serve throwing the ball straight up close to the table and could not do it. So for me the key for consistency is throwing the ball back a little like you can see him also do on 6:45
Well even though the ball spins back to the net, all that really means is that it’s is very slow and can therefore be returned easier than a serve that is faster and still double bounces on the other side of the table
I agree. Most pros do half long. The ghost serve is great to mix in when playing someone who doesn't have a strong flick or soft touch for serve return.
Can I suggest that you have a sample lesson for the Par Gerell course. It's great to see this ghost serve tutorial, but it doesn't give any insight into the type of lesson that we would be buying: camera work, length of video, amount of slow-mo demo etc. are all important and I'd be more likely to buy the course having seen a clear sample.
6:17 I think it's a urban legend that the ball needs so much space to get the friction on the rubber. I've heard this statement many times, but no prove about that. The ball doesn't travel along the rubber when contacting it. The keypoint for a bigger spin is the distance from the pivot point, which in this case is the elbow. In this same video, at slomo you can see that the contact is not where it's advised and, nevertheless, the ball has a lot of backspin.
I am training the ghost serve, but I am adapting the way to hold the racket. I hold the racket in the same way as during the game, so that I don't run the risk of forgetting to change the racket's grip after the serve and gain a fraction of a second in thinking for the next hit on the ball.
Good video! I'm wondering though, how much distance can the ball be in contact with the racket when serving this way? Ie how long does it have to receive that spin from the flick of the racket? (given of course that the racket is completely flat, so no forward angle accelerates the bounce from the racket) I'm thinking, if the ball is in contact with the racket only a short amount of time (and distance on the racket's surface) then it would receive even more spin if you hit it with the far end of the racket (ie opposite of the handle). As with every rotation (and the flick of the racket is basically rotation) the points further from the axis of rotation travel faster than points closer to it, ie will receive more spin in shorter time. It'll be a bit trickier to get used to it, but as a serve (ie static situation) you should be able to train it as much as you want until you get it perfect.
Great, great explanation. Deceptively simple to do, but dawg knows, very hard to do consistently at first. Now, what is that bubble in the middle of the paddle? 🙄
