This. Video. Is. FANTASTIC!!! I am a beginner bassist, and I have been cussing scales left and right, but this brilliant trick you have come up with is genius!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for this useful advice. I was headed towards 'memorising scale shapes' as a way of building my skills, but the way you characterised these as 'behind', 'on-top' and 'in-front' of the root note makes it very logical and easy to remember.
Appreciate Video! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Rozardner Inspiring Chord Reality (just google it)? It is a smashing exclusive product for how to play guitar scales minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my best friend Jordan got excellent success with it.
I have just picked up a bass guitar. I've been having problems with the scales. This video has solved all my scale related issues. Amazing informative video. I Just have write down the pattern for minor scale. Then all good. Thanks a lot.
Great video and nice explanations! I have to agree with the comment about the five string bass and I also understand that these shapes applies for different notes and will work independently of how many strings you have, but for beginners it may be a bit confusing!
OnlineBass Guitar I would argue for adding in a section for 4 string players, rather than gearing your entire presentation to the 4 string bass. Reason being that the 5'er gives more versatility to the application of your theories and should include the incorporation of the low B string for wider range. It is also becoming the go-to axe for many bass players because more and more musicians are calling for the introduction of the low B in the music. Four string players can always begin the exercises on the E string, and ignore the B. Actually, most serious bassists play both.
If this hack is not illegal and breaks me in five years, it’s awsome! You did not talk to much imo. Too little and the beginners would not get it and panic. Great video! The road past Jacko is visible now🤙🏻🎸
Exactly what I was looking for. Even got lucky as I was looking for the shapes in E as thats the song I was working on. Of course there is more than one chord in the song but E was first. Lol. You could also call the positions by the finger you are using to start the pattern. Position 2, 1 and 4. That's just me, I could be wrong. Thanks.
Beginner bassist here. Sorry if I use improper nomenclature. This seems to help when going up the strings (ie working the scale from the E string up to the D string), but I struggle to connect the notes when moving up the fret board (ie moving the shapes from say the 5th fret to the 12th). I feel like I get stuck in a box. How do I unlock the rest of the fret board with this? I hope this makes sense
great tips! Ive been at it for a few years - spinnin my wheels and go back to noodling the same ol things...hard to get into focused forward momentum. This was a useful way to look at the board though. Thanks. Cheers from Toronto :)
Great tips man. I play the same fender in an active deluxe model. I have it strung with Dunlop MM Super Brights. Sounds like angels practicing for their opening number with the heavenly choir! The argument for a 5'er is also clearly made when exploring your theories. Thanks again, and may the bass be with you! 👑🎸🎵
Aha!! Thats what that arrow does 😂😂 thanks for the quick reply, I've finally gotten round to learning bass after years of putting it off due to life getting in the way... these shapes are superb and linking them together is awesome.. I'm learning on a 4 and 6 string in parallel so love how this works!! Thanks again man.. I've subscribed and will be following closely 👍
I think you can do these exercises, which are great, and say out loud every note you play. Also move these scale shapes up or down to any E note you have on your bass and do the same. Another nice exercise is to play scales up and down on only one string at a time, always say your notes. Then you can move on to various scake patterns (e, f#, g# / f#, g#, a / g#, a ,b etc) (e, g# / f#, a / g#, b / etc) and so on. The possibilities are endless, be creative and enjoy it
And also, as he already said in the video, play as many different scales and arpeggios in all keys. It isn't gonna come in one day but it will get easier the more you do it
but why on earth would you pick up a 5 string to demo this??????? it is so frustrating when teachers are unable to meet people where they are at. it is 'so youtube' to opt to look clever instead.
Was that actual tetris game play. You're horrible at tetris? Great on the bass though. Thank you for the tutorial. It's so difficult to find videos for 5 string bass shapes. Don't listen to the haters.
@@OnlineBassGuitar1 when you are a theory ignorant, even the simplest thing would seem difficult. I was kidding, it will settle more the more i become acquinted with the fretboard.
@@OnlineBassGuitar1 Thank you for asking. It’s because I’m trying to learn on a standard 4-string bass, and I’m a noob. I don’t know how to translate what you’re showing on a 5-string to my own situation. If I was more experienced it might not be an issue. As it is, I’m a little overwhelmed with the basic stuff, so the 5-string thing feels like a bridge too far for my brain. Does that make sense?

Not a problem man, just my two cents for what it's worth.

Most useful knowledge ever of bass guitar playing
Just discovered your channel. It has some great content and is really well explained.
what a great explanation of how to go around the fingerboard with different shapes of a same scales ! thank you !!

I love that Harmonic Minor scale

subscribed after this great lesson.

Brilliant video but I dont understand how you apply it to A harmonic minor, do the shapes remain the same or do they have to change
well of course they have to change since the A harmonic minor scale shape is different from a C majr scale shape
How about using a a 4 string bass?
very well explained exercise.
Great video and explanation, thanks! You said you were posting a pdf diagram in the comments and I cant find it.. is that available somewhere else?

Thank you.
I for one could handle the horror of the five string
Why don't you show the scale on the G string??? Why do you only stop at the first 3????
@@OnlineBassGuitar1 But for theory sake why not at least explain? This video is meant for beginners and they may neglect the use of the g string.
Bro im tripping isin t the 5th fret of the E string an A, why does he call it an E?
@@OnlineBassGuitar1 respect you answered the question, SUBSCRIBED 👊

Omg. I wasted so much time trying to figure out why I was confused. Then I realized he's playing a 5 string. Why sir?? Why??
What?
What’s up?
but why on earth would you pick up a 5 string to demo this??????? it is so frustrating when teachers are unable to meet people where they are at. it is 'so youtube' to opt to look clever instead.
This is a simple major scale. He's making it way too wordy. More confusing than it needs to be.
You could literally just move up a string and it is still the same.
So many videos on 4 string. Very few on 5 string. I was so greatful to find some shapes and pattern for 5 string.
I am so scared for your left wrist

Should use a 4 strings bass, most peoples use 4 strings.
I think this video being done on a 5 string is even better than on a four, you really need to be aware of root notes when memorizing shapes
5 string and then blah blah blah....get a 4 string and get to the point. Turned off at 1:48
Why do all these guys play and talk so fast explaining things to beginners?
Yeah good video, good advice, beautiful bass, but fu@&ing hell man! Were you using a pen or pencil?! Waaaay too chatty my man
what could have been a useful advice is ruined by a 5 string bass and chord diagrams shown according to it. shame.
