Maggie...you are killing it with these reviews. Great job. Very curious about this variation of GWT.

I love your review on your own Maggie. This has tipped the balance so that I will get this game (I came to GWT late and am really enjoying the original game).

i think it's the best. i wouldn't play either of the others over it. still wish there wasn't the "build on the route your taking so i can tax you to mosey along" thought

@@rahdo It's such a minor element of the game overall. Are other people playing so differently that this swings games?

well in the mid-to-late game, a single coin here and there doesn't mean much, but in the early game it's a pretty big swing, imo, stealing a coin (or multiple coins in a multiplayer game) from other players. extra money in the early game compounds to big stuff by the end of the game :)

3:55 Those building placements by Maggie could be illegal moves...

Spot on regarding the theme. It was such a huge disappointment for us here in NZ. It just feels “New Zealand Adjacent”. Like they spent months and months working on the game and about 10 minutes researching the theme. And that island map is a complete joke. Such a missed opportunity.

I’m sad to hear this because I worked together and playtested it extensively with people from New Zealand. It was first released at Wellycon and among the games with the best feedback at this convention, so people liked it (visitors could rate played games). In all Great Western Trail versions, the map shows only a part of the country, similar to Argentina or the base game. The train track is always abstract, much like the sea map in New Zealand. I understand that whatever I say here won’t change your mind, but I want to emphasize that I tried to create the best possible game in a wonderful part of the world and collaborated with very, very friendly people from New Zealand to achieve this.

Just wondering why Rahdo didn't review this one himself?

Maggie, I love your work in general but I can't agree on this game. It is just too bloated for us. It's a giant pain to set up and the "free" cards just slow down the game so much because you can't plan on your turn (as you don't know what you're going to draw to replace them). I'll stick with the original or Argentina.

You call it bloated I call it ‘less tight, more relaxed, mire sandboxy’. I like this so much more

You can and should play the "free "cards anytime, also on another players turn. Because I agree, it would be a pain if you couldn't plan ahead.
