One of only 3 artist to ever sold more than 150 million albums both as a solo artist and as part of a group. The other 2 are Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney.
Have you ever reviewed Enya?

The thing is that this song was published in 1981 while Michael Jacksons song was published way later. So if anyone took some notes from anyone then it probably was the other way around.
Yeah but that intro isn't on the Face Value version.
@@88wildcat Show me what was Michael Jacksons contribution to this song? Can you paste the video or the clip where Phil Collins copied stuff from him.
@@sliceofheaven3026 I don't know who copied who or even if anybody copied anybody. Just that the beginning (the part before the bump, bump, bump, dis, dis, part before the guitar intro) sounds pretty similar to the intro on the Michael Jackson video. I don't know when Collins started putting that intro into his live shows so I don't know who came first and I don't know if either party had knowledge of what the other party was doing or had done. I'm just saying they are similar.
The beginning is part of the original song
Snopes says No.
I love how the crowd goes crazy right before the drum solo. He's just slowly strolling over to the drums and the audience starts screaming even louder because they know what's coming! 🤩
Another fun fact: Phil Collins was the only artist to play at two different Live Aid shows in one day, July 13, 1985. He performed in London, where he performed by himself and, then, with Sting. Afterwards, he took the Concorde to Philadelphia, where he sat in with Eric Clapton and a reunited Led Zeppelin and played a solo piano version of In the Air Tonight.
It wasn't a private jet. It was the regularly scheduled flight with Concord (the supersonic passenger plane) from Heathrow to New York JFK . From there he took a helicopter to Philadelphia.
@@nielsdegroot9138 I stand corrected. Thank you. I fixed that in my comment.
Yeah, and was credited with ruining the zeppelin set.
he destroyed the Zeppelin set. He's more a jazz drummer than a rock and blues drummer, and it just didn't work.
Another Fun Fact, I attended Phil's original Band:Genesis' first ever Top Of THe Bill performance when the original Bill Toppers: "Bell 'n Arc" disbanded the day before the gig at The Croydon Pub/Music Venue in South East London in 1972 with 3,000 others:)
Phil is a legend. He’s not flashy, he doesn’t look cool, he’s just a really talented guy who has had about a million hits. This song was from the soundtrack to the old 80’s TV show Miami Vice, although it appears on Phil’s album Face Value and is probably his most iconic song. A slow burn with that really dramatic drum entrance… so good
Haha, in Buster he looked quite cool.
I can still remember that first episode of Miami Vice with this song playing. I was in a squad bay with about 30 other jarheads watching the premier... Old times, good times.
@@vjordan1709
Really? It was in the very first episode?
I didn't even remember it was in that show at all.
I must've been 13-14, sadly I remember next to nothing from that time.
Didnt remember it was in it, but it must have been in a ton of movies and shows...
@@jamminen74
No, apparently it was rarely used for something else because everybody associated it with Miami Vice from then on.
But it was in some Tom Cruise movie before that.
phil collins put his talent all on line on this night, his greatest single song performance, ...... note perfect
SO HAPPY YOU CHOSE THIS VERSION TO REACT TO!!!! its THE most iconic version!!
It's better when you know what is coming
Definitely best version. Also beats studio version too 😃
i got to disagree with you there, i think the version together with Eric Clapton on the guitar, is slightly better than this version. But thats just my oppinion.
@@KingJohnson1985 THE BUILD UP IN THIS ONE IS *CHEFS KISS* PERFECT
@@hephner78 same can be said about the version i was talking of
Hey, Maggie, an interesting fact for you:
Phil Collins wrote this song to get out some anger issues he was expieriencing during a rather bitter divorce
In the drumming world, very few are regarded as highly as Phil Collins. The drum fill leading in is probably one of the most famous drum fills of all time. Pure legend! I saw him play live with Genesis and was completely blown away.
Rick Beato rated it the best drum fill in rock history.
This song is just as legitimately cool today as it was in the 80s ✌
Seeing him live isn't just a concert, it's an entire experience. This song, specifically, had this energy that started low and steady, built continuously, then went over the top. From Darryl's first chord, to the drum intro, it blew everybody out of the water. Truly memorable! 😊
He was 57 when he did this concert...He is always an Epic..!!! AWESOME !!!
He was 53
Just an epic song by an epic artist. It NEVER gets old. Today's music should step back and see what "old school" music sounded like and why it's still so popular.
The drum drop of a generation! At 57, I still air drum it. Saw him in concert - truly EPIC!
71 and I still do too
I'm pretty sure air drumming this song is required by international law.
When I realize some grown up people never heard about Phil Collins... I really feel old.
10:54 One of the most underrated drummers of all time in my opinion
Phil Collins underrated??? Not in Europe he isn't.
Underrated???
Not in the drumming world. He’s up there with the greatest of all time
Surely that honour goes to Karen Carpenter
His drum work in Brand X group in phenomenal
I don't know how many times I heard this song over the years and I get chills every time he gets to the drums. He is awesome. I'm 65 and act like a teenager when I hear his songs. Love him.
Me, too!
I like this live version better than the studio version.❤
perhaps the coolest drum intro ever.
I have had a couple of drummers say the reason more drummers don't sing. Is because it's extremely difficult to play and sing in pocket.
Think about it, all four limbs moving independantly to differing timing, then you have to sing something completely different as well. No kidding that's a big ask of anybody. Karen Carpenter did well.
A couple of things you may have missed.
His breath control while drumming is nothing but pure magic. Not any unevenness in flow.
The other is the drama of the song. its anger and anguish about his first divorce.
A lot of people have made up stories about what this song is about and they tell these stories with such authority - but according to Phil Collins himself - he wrote this about his divorce after he caught his wife at the time cheating on him.
Phil Collins is a LEGEND!!!!!!!!
I grew up listening to Phil & Genesis. Always been a huge fan. It breaks my heart to see his current health conditions. I remember seeing a comment once about Phil looking like "Your best friends dad, except he's a mega-star." and it's always stuck with me because it's just so true lol.
Phil is a legend. Period. ❤
One of my favorite YT videos. I love to watch the reactors expressions when Phil hits the drums on that first lick. They're minds are literally blown.
Another person that doesn’t know what “literally” means. Where do you people come from?
here is something to think about that I have not seen anyone comment on. from the moment he is at the top of the stage, walks down the stairs, walks across the stage, up the stairs, finally gets to the drums is the exact time he needs to be at the drums. that in its self is awesome
Plays take a shot every time you say "Holy cheese muffins" ...ty :) Phil is one of the greats , i discovered him in my youth with Genesis. Such a awesome talent ! Ty for this one
Phil Collins was here in Madison Wisconsin for a concert several years ago. He started like this. It was so cool. He performed in our football stadium. It was a nice warm summer night. It was so thrilling, I didn’t want to ever end. Thank you for reaction here.
When you have seen greatness and know it instantly!!!!
Another amazing live performance with the drummer singing is The Eagles - Hotel California. Don Henley is so frickin’ good! Make sure you watch the live version of that one as well, the whole band are incredible musicians!
Another is Grand Funk Railroad and American Band
Also; the "Band" with the incomparable Levon Helm!
Rare Earth with : l know l am losing you. Peter Rivera.
For another amazing singing drummer, I suggest "DISCIPLE" live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX by The Warning
Another "react" channel got copyright struck by the Eagles so stay away.
That is what is called mastery of your art
Love your reaction when he sits down, especially when you are like wait is he a drummer? Oh yea he is! Oh wow! Love every second of it. Great job and glad you enjoyed...best version of this song ever imo.
The old guy with the long white beard and hair is Leland Sklar who was a studio bassist for several major artists. He has a channel showing how to play bass and talks about the stars he worked with. Leland Sklar is responsible for the famous bass line in Reba's The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia.
I've seen Phil Collins twice. Once with Genesis and once solo. His voice is unmistakable and his drumming is just pure magic. The drum riff from this song is one of the most iconic and recognizable beats of all time.
This was in Paris, 2004. 80,000 in the audience. So freaking good!
That performance was pure magic. I never get tired of watching it.❤
Take Me Home from this same show is another good one.
He is the best at what he does.
I went to a Phil Collins concert on September 1, 2004. It was one of the best concerts I've been to (though I've only been to two of them). The buildup to this song took seemingly forever, but it was so worth it.
This song was in the movie against All odds and a TV show Miami vice
Loved when you remembered he is the drummer ... I've always known him for his great drumming before his vocal performances
Is it me or is there a recent trend with Maggie's videos where she plays about 5 seconds into the song and then she pulls a face, pauses the video and then says something on the lines of "Wait.... its THAT song....???"
Off my head there has been Led Zepplin's Immigration Song, Ghost's May On A Cross and various AC/DC songs in the past month or so.... And now Phil joins them :D
Just watched the reaction. I watched them at roundhay Park in Leeds England 🇬🇧. 80 000 people. Amazing and we levitated the Park 😂.
I saw Genesis at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin back 1992. Then saw Phil Collins at Marcus Amphitheatre in Milwaukee in 1994 and at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee in 1997. Of all the concerts I have been to over the years....Genesis and Phil Collins were the best ever. Phil Collins is definitely a legend in the industry. No crazy antics....just great music, great voice, great talent and great effects that pulled you into the music !!
notice how the audience is so mesmerized they listen and not yell over him?
Great reaction. The thing that's always amazed me about In The Air Tonight is that he just wrote it to experiment with some new studio gear and improvised the lyrics off the top of his head. And it turned out to be an enormous hit. The iconic drum fill was similarly practical. He just needed a lead-in for the last part of the song, so he played two hits on each of the toms and the snare, but the way he timed them was so brilliant that it went on to become one of the most legendary drum fils of all time. It was all just one big, happy accident.
I gotta say, as an 80's teen I got to experience sooooo much icon music and Phil Collins is a unique artist among many unique artists of that time. So glad you reacted to this song :)
Phenomenal choice, Trixie and Maggie! This guy just rocks your socks off!
👍🤗💖
Incredible Epic song, and I’ve watched this at least 200 times, and it still gives me shivers
Phillip Collins is my #1 singer. I saw him twice. He is AMAZIING!! God bless him. He is a genius with his drums!
I remember when this song first came out and everybody was either singing it or whistling it, and sitting in traffic you could always tell when someone was listening to this because they started air drumming"hard" when they got to that drum solo
And there are people now that still remember that scene from Miami vice like it was yesterday
Yes, Crockett and Tubbs on that hot Miami night!
I remember the urban legend that went around in the 80s about this song being about a friend of Phil Collins drowning and some guy in a boat just stood by and watched and didn't do anything to help. Collins supposedly found out the guys name I guess by looking up who the boat was registered to and invited him to one of his concerts with a front row center seat. He then came out and sang the song to the guys face. Great rock and roll story though exactly zero percent of it turned out to be true.
Good Reaction:)
Fun Fact, I attended Phil's original Band: Genesis' first ever Top Of The Bill performance when the original Bill Toppers: "Bell 'n Arc" disbanded the day before the gig at The Croydon Pub/Music Venue in South East London in 1972 with 3,000 others:)
Great that you reacted to Phil Collins, a legendary musician. I loved the way he comes in with those flams, an epic song, one my favorites of his.
Brilliant! just brilliant 👍❤️🏴
Phil is a bad ass!! He's so talented and versatile. He said on a talk show that his son is also a drummer! And now you will never hear this song in your car without doing that drum solo on your steering wheel!!😂
That was one of the most epic live perfomances I have ever seen
In the 80s we listened to this piece in the car with a double three-way speakers and a 500 watt sub-woofer in the back seat of the car, which practically acted as a backrest. We were all waiting for the epic moment of Phil's entrance with the drums to feel the kick on the back.....what fun, what a piece, but if you see old Genesis videos, Phil on drums was a monster
So glad you enjoyed it kid, for many of us who have been listening to this music for 40-50 yrs. It's great to listen again and even better when we get to watch someone experience it for the first time and see the surprise and wow moments that we watch anticipating because we already know what's coming. It brings back memories to me of sharing with my younger brother oh so many years ago.
Phil Collins is a legend.
Phil Collins told Jimmy Fallon in an interview that he wrote the song when he was going through a divorce. In the opening lines, it sounds like he caught her doing something she shouldn't be doing, and if she was drowning... sounds like he had a lot of animosity
The first time seeing them live was in Miami at the Stadium. 80,000 were treated to an unforgettable show.
The point is Maggie that the entire audience is waiting for the drum fill
I am subscribed to numerous channels that do reactions, but yours by far is the best - you pause the least amount and your opinions are those that most closely match my own, as well as your recognition of talent in the video itself. You do a fantastic job and your own skillset just makes your opinions MORE valid. Cheers and thx again!
Leland's beard is truly majestic
I like that Phil doesn't use resonant heads on his Toms. Love that sound of his drums.
If I'm not mistaken, this concert took place at the Paris Bercy stadium, hence the 80 000 people in the crowd! Amazing show!
If you listen to the intro carefully, you will realize not only the instruments but also pieces of the song are teased in the intro. Not only does it tease, but also builds up the sound and atmosphere of the song.
It's about to go LEGENDARY!
That walk to the drum set was so cool.
OMG! I love your emojis floating across the screen. Awesome! Yes these songs bring me back to high school. Keep 'em coming!
Hands down, that was the best reaction to that song I have ever seen. Honest and true that you haven't heard the whole song before and I agree that is an epic, epic live version of that song. Gives me chills every time and I've heard it from the album release.
Thank you so much! 🤩🎶
Everyone waits for the drum drop. The man is beyond a legend
"Mom, can I have a drum set?" 😀
💖💃😀
That performance will make a grown man cry (saying for a friend...really).
If it wasn't for Phil Collins I don't think Tarzan would have been half as good as it was that man perfected the music for that movie
What you have right here is EPIC
Maggie! Never lose your smile or your energy!! Otherwise the earth will not be able to sustain a stable orbit!
It would be the other way around. This song came out in 1981, while Earth Song came out in 1995.
You picked the right version. Yay. Great work as always
Many may not remember, but there was a TV show called Miami Vice. This song was used in an episode and it fit so amazingly well. It was almost as if the episode was written for this song.
This song and Miami Vice revolutionized television in the 80's --- in Miami you'd see people driving around playing this song dressed like the characters.
I actually was at the concert.. it was fantastic.. one of the best concerst I saw, well together with Queen and Dire straits :) 2004 Bercy Paris..!
This song was featured in the 1980s tv show Miami Vice.
I didn't see Harry Potter, But I know Magic when I see it. When I started playing drums, that was the one lick you had to learn. Take care.
I was at a friend's wedding where this was the first dance. Yup-there was the happy couple twirling away "If you told me you were drowning..." Short marriage, for whatever reason.
Did you notice the long white bearded bass player? That’s Leland Sclar. He played with Phil Collins, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and many many others. Live and studio. Beyond famous. He has a youtube channel where he plays many of these clips with commentary. A very kind human being too.
I remember hearing this song on -that- episode of Miami Vice. Phil had a somewhat recurring role there. And, growing up in Florida in the 80s.... This song was amazing. There' almost no one that knows Phil Collins anymore, but everyone knows the important bits of this song!
2 key things to note during this performance:
When the guitar first kicks in with that power chord and the crowd goes nuts! That was their cue of what song he’s about to sing. Also, when they see him about to sit behind the drums! They already know the drum fill that’s about to hit HARD AS HELL…and that it’s about to be HIM that kicks it in!!!
They play this song at Beaver Stadium, home of Penn State Football, during night games. It always gets the over 107,000 fans pumped!
Lol you need to watch The hangover and spot the song in the movie. Lolololol 💯 😂😅
That is why he sang this song in concert
Oh yeah, this is one of the greatest live performances (alongside "Unchained Melody"-Righteous Bros, "In Your Eyes"-Peter Gabriel, anything by SRV, "A Little Help From My Friends "-Joe Crocker, "Enter Sandman"-Metallica, "You Got It"-Roy Orbison, Boston, Supertramp, Scorpions.
One of his last concerts after a failed spinal surgery took place in Warsaw in Jule 2019. He couldn't play drums. Phill sat on stage, in a special chair, his son played drums. Of course, he played In The Air Tonight.
80,000 in attendance. This was in Paris.
You must watch this Phil Collins and Chester Thompson drumming on chairs Brilliant
This will forever be the Miami Vice song for me.
I've seen him 4 times, 2 with Genesis and 2 on his own. Great Everytime!
Phil is a legend, great guy also
I always get the Miami Vibes from this song.. driving city streets during the night..
