I have owned a Rexton Rx270XDI for 7 years and have clicked more than 500,000km. Its build quality is actually quite good and the engine is very robust. Other than basic maintainance, I have only replaced and alternator. I sold the car 2 years ago for a Cayenne. I wouldn't compare the Cayenne to it as they are very different cars but I do miss it's seven seater configuration and it's reliability. Don't judge a car by its badge or by its country of origin, one of the best cars I have owned
I had an XC90 for 6 years. I loved it so much that when I had to sell it, I bought another one. I’ve had it for 6 years and if I ever have to sell it, I will buy another one. They are absolutely fantastic. Like a family Labrador. It has personality. A nice face. Going to sound like Clarkson here, but it’s a mate. I wouldn’t swap it for anything. It’s brilliant!

At 1:12 he says that on bends in the road the XC90 leaves the Rexton behind, and really is in another class. I'm amazed at how many cars I can out turn driving down twisting turning highways out of the Colorado foothills into Denver in my XC90.
I m driving RX7 for last one year and have not felt any problem in the rexton it is power full easy to manuver even in traffic but how can you compare a suv with price tag of 25 lac to a suv with price tag of 60 lac and if you r comparing it clearly shows that RX7 IS WINNER
So the Rexton, albeit this is an old model, is far superior off road. I don't doubt the new one is even better. The 2017 model is bigger than the new XC90, just as sharp to look at and a heck of a lot cheaper still. Sadly, badge snobs will always follow it around and sneer

He talks about the braking and handling but skips the acceleration! Rexton was 11,000 euro cheaper, had better acceleration and had superior off-road performance.
Not to sound like a Ssangyong dealer or anything but... as standard the Rexton comes with 7 seats. you can have them removed for free. then you have the space, with rear seats up it has 1338 liters of space, them down and I'm sure you have a lot more than another 500ltrs.

good evening. I state that I own has always been off-road. The Rexton is still a offroad, while appearing "A SUV": has the frame side members (SUVs are all with unibody), has low range, the limited slip differential ..... what about the reliability of a Mercedes engine? (Although it is reviewed by Ssangyong home) I liked both of these cars .... and I also liked the chevrolet captiva .... I need to take away my GRAND VITARA 3 doors, because now too small (the children grow up) and I turned around these three models .... I know the ssangyong, as I had the korando, but I know it will captiva volvo. Volvo mounts a nice motor, accessories galore, but aime is a SUV and just and to be honest a simple dirt can 'to "literally smoking clutch" ..... The Captiva is aesthetically very beautiful, the engine is generous and travels well on the highway but forgotten off-road, even simple gravel roads as it is only a berlinona high that allows you (if you have had the foresight to buy as 4x4 ..... c 'it is also the inutilissima version 4x2) to deal with the snow (on the asphalt that is). The rexton is a good compromise for those who love the pure off-road (VITARA, KORANDO, NIVA, DEFENDER) and does not give up a greater comfort and above all space !! EXCELLENT REXTON !! P.S. crappy car? I think that with korando circolavo on a snowy road without ........ chains while a flaming x5 we could not !!! as usual the people speak without knowing !!!

So many unkind commentaries toward SsangYong and most of them are coming from people who never ever drove one. And yes, while they lack in design department (however they improved since the time when first Rexton debuted) those are still fine cars. Still, comparing it with XC90 is missing the point since both models were menufactured for different kind of customers respectively. I'd like to also correct some missinformation that was spread here - Rexton while it shares engines and transmissions, isn't based on ML - it's actually made on extanded Musso chassis - the older SsangYong SUV that was also constructed with MB license for engines and transmissions. The only issue I presonally have with this particular South Korean brand - as one of the few commenters with oil in ther mind, there are not much of those cars in European market so getting spare parts is more troublesome and time consuming. It's kinda sad, because there's no competition for Rexton considering the amount of car we can get at this price tag with above the avareage off-road capabilties.

I had a 2004 XC90 ,bought it when it was 6 months old ,when it was just out of warranty, the steering rack failed apparently it was because of potholes according to Volvo strange as I cannot remember driving over any potholes,It’s a good job I did not actually drive it off road And in the snow it was pathetic
lol.... we test drove both cars before we bought Rexton.... Rex is better off-road, and cheaper, but not as comfy as xc90... yet, can be improved with some modification. Since my family owned 3 volvo already... we decided not to go for volvo... Once u own a volvo... you might like it... but when you own 3... you would wonder why cars broke down with-in warranty.....

The rexton Noblesse ie very luxiurus more than some never Volvo's... It has Alcantara gear nob and on the door panels. Also heated seats at front and back. It even has an better trim just like in new Mercedes no plastic like the normal model
Good review. Very fair. But My XC90 will do better off-road than "forest paths". Believe me, I live in the foothills in Colorado, and I've been in moderate off-road conditions more than a few times, and my XC90 does very well. Not saying I think it is better off-road than the Ssangyong Rexton though.
Cars are usually relatively cheaper in their home markets vs imports. And those prices are vs. the T6 and the T8 not a small diesel like in the video. If those are 2016 prices then you are comparing the Rexton, a more than 15 year old construction based on a 20 year old Mercedes platform W163, vs the all new XC90 and not the model in the video. Remember that this video is 10 years +. Probably 2002-2004. For comparison a 2016 Rexton 2,2 SE cost about 39 690 € vs. the all new XC90 D4 Momentum 56 460 € in Sweden.
You can't compare them, the Rexton will tow 3.5 tons, it's got a solid rear axle and low gears. If you buy a decent suspension kit and body lift it it will go to all the places the big Japanese boys will go.
If you need to tow an agricultural trailer off road and want an incredibly tough and reliable companion then get a Rexton. If you like your comfort and aren't too worried about maintenance costs get an XC90. 'Orses for courses..........
I like the volvo. I have a 2007 xc90 with 210,000 miles. Third row seat are more for kids. Second row seats are Allright. Never had any major problems besides replacing the water pump and alternator. Both are a pain to change. Other then that I like everything else. Get average of 22 mpg.
I bought 2011 270xdi Rexton with 5 speed manual. On offroad track and trailer 3.5 Tonnes beats the Volvo. Trunk is pretty big, but interior is pretty cheap. Anyway on a highway Volvo is much better. But if you stuck somewhere it is game over. Comparing Rexton and Volvo XC90 was bad idea.
Good advertising bucket from Korea to stand on the same shelf with global brands in comparison. You sit in the seats, cheap plastic, all hold together, the doors are closed in the barn - it's no match for Volvo
Rexton clearly wins! It can drive places where the XC90 cant! The only downside about the r7 is the handling. The engine sound of the R7 is amazing compared to the XC90! The XC90 is for volvo fanboys who needs luxury! While the R7 is for no luxury needed people. PS. I have driven both cars and i know the cars well :)
They`re both good cars. The Volvo is good safe family crossover, while the Rexton is more truckish, more off-road appealing, but still good value to the money
Ahh no my 2008 Volvo cx90 v8 has more tech than most of today's vehicles. Plus alot more creature comforts. .. I love it fast durable.reluable cheap to own and is in pristine shape.low miles. Fast too

Comparing different vehicles for different class really. XC 90 should be comparing aganst BMW X5 or Audi Q7. Ssangyong should be comparing to Nissan Pathfinder or Suzuki Grand Vitara.
im from america where we are a bit more critical of off-roaders within our off-roading communities. both of these SUVs/Crossovers are what we would refer to as "softroaders" aka neither of them are proper offroaders or even close. both of them are designed for mild trails at most, and most comfortable on road and on well traveled paths. as for which is the better vehical.. hard for me to say, im not big into SUVs/Crossovers, i like wagons better but if i was to pick, i think the volvo is better all rounder, less compromises and better ride quality and handling, plus for most part, you probably be using this for on road stuff, like shopping and school runs and taking family and date out places and volvo is more dressed for success, also if live in an environment where see regular snow and get a few feet of snow every storm system in winter, maybe worth going for volvo over the other... i have a few volvos myself, live in an area sees a few feet of snow every big storm (though this year was lame) an volvos just sem to cope better. ya a proper jeep with proper tires probably less likely to get stuck but having been there done that i cant say it feels more controllable, volvos somehow how more planted feeling..

Solid axels, AWD/4WD, low range doesn’t make an off-roader… no it’s actually the modification made specially ones made in the field to clear obstictals and get to safety that make an off-roader an off-roader. None of these vehicles in the form presented or mentioned would clear most if not any of our “serious” trails that if that’s only kick you got, your hood as done before you got started… need on serious trails atleast front and rear lockers, maybe a few that need center locker as well. Most of these cars would have punctured fuel tanks, bent or torn links, bars, and arms under their cars from the lack of trail armoring and having rocks smash up the undersides and being hung up on things over and over again puts a ton of stress on factory parts. never mind our “severe” trails that are so locked down the requirement is special modification just to enter and clear the gatekeeper…
@@Honeypot-x9s Center locker is not needed in the Rexton, because it has a part time 4wd without a center diff. It's 50/50 torque split between front and back. I also think the Rexton had an LSD at the back, but I'm not sure. But really, you have to modify your car if you want to get on the toughest trails. No factory spec car can do those. In Europe we mostly classify cars like this: Crossover: 2WD/AWD car like this Nissan rogue/Qashqai, not meant for any kind of off roading. SUV: Something a bit more capable, like the new Sorento, Explorer or the XC90. Off roader: Something with a real 4WD, low range, BOF and decent ground clearance. Clearly meant for some off roading.
if you are a tall person, don´t bother looking confortness in the rexton. Seats simply can´t lower much.And offroading is dislikeable cause of continuos bumping your head withy the roof.
Yeah but it is structurally inferior and looks terrible especially the front end and the lights just look like an after thought. The volvo is in a better class, unfair comparison really.
One thing that wasn't covered in this review was safety. Also, while I admit Volvo aren't the leader when it comes to off road vehicles, I have seen videos (and not Volvo Promo ones) of them doing some pretty tough stuff. Also when the Volvo got stuckI would have thought rocking it back and forth as opposed to gunning it would have been a more efficient, better way to get out.

Ssangyong/Rexton constantly have breakdowns ,a lot of them here at the scrapyard :) i have 2 cars,a XC70 and a Mercedes G class.. Mercedes G wins of course, the Ssangyong Rexton is a pile of leftover parts from other Korea cars with a MB copy cat engine . try to buy spare parts for a Rexton,, have to call Sherlock holmes to track down the correct parts
I prefer Volvo XC-90 my dad has one form 2005 and we are very happy about it. We went to romanian and back with the car and not a single problem! I would not prefer a Ssangyoung Rexton

I've seen mercedes benzs failing on these roads while I was going faster, lol ! germans only compare volvo to other non premium brands just because they're affraid people will buy volvo and not their scrap metal things they're calling cars...
I cant imagine that more than 10 percent of the original buyers have had a real use for offroad capability. I think its better, that this aspect has been under developed, theres for acting like you are something which you are not.

You are comparing all wheel drive with 4 wheel drive. They are completely different. It is no different then throwing in a hummer in with these 2 cars.

是啊，确实政策不好，停个车又费劲....我就是偶尔周末去郊区玩的时候开，平时代步肯定也是那台9年车龄的XC90了，HEICO的排气声音很给力听起来很浑厚，这个改装套件挺不错的又不张扬。

I just got a Rexton it had 300.000km on it it's now got 367.000km it's still going good only problem I had was diesel fuel line blockage, good drive

조기폐차 보조금 받으려고 안 팔고 폐차 시켰지만 차체나 프레임에 녹 한점 없었습니다.
심지어 머플러도 순정 그대로...
중국 손 타기 전에는 진짜 괜찮게 만들었다 생각합니다.
옛날보다 지금의 쌍용이 훨씬 더 잘 나갑니다 개소리들 그만 짖죠

This car is a real beast on difficult terrain.

The rexton Noblesse ie very luxiurus more than some never Volvo's... It has Alcantara gear nob and on the door panels. Also heated seats at front and back. It even has an better trim just like in new Mercedes no plastic like the normal model
Good review. Very fair. But My XC90 will do better off-road than "forest paths". Believe me, I live in the foothills in Colorado, and I've been in moderate off-road conditions more than a few times, and my XC90 does very well. Not saying I think it is better off-road than the Ssangyong Rexton though.

In Korea. Rexton NOBLESSE is 31,500EURO, XC90 T6 AWD is 77,750EURO. About 2.5 times. XC90 T8 PHEV is 112,200EURO. About 3.5 times.
Cars are usually relatively cheaper in their home markets vs imports. And those prices are vs. the T6 and the T8 not a small diesel like in the video.
If those are 2016 prices then you are comparing the Rexton, a more than 15 year old construction based on a 20 year old Mercedes platform W163, vs the all new XC90 and not the model in the video. Remember that this video is 10 years +. Probably 2002-2004.
For comparison a 2016 Rexton 2,2 SE cost about 39 690 € vs. the all new XC90 D4 Momentum 56 460 € in Sweden.

You can't compare them, the Rexton will tow 3.5 tons, it's got a solid rear axle and low gears. If you buy a decent suspension kit and body lift it it will go to all the places the big Japanese boys will go.

If you need to tow an agricultural trailer off road and want an incredibly tough and reliable companion then get a Rexton. If you like your comfort and aren't too worried about maintenance costs get an XC90. 'Orses for courses..........
I like the volvo. I have a 2007 xc90 with 210,000 miles.
Third row seat are more for kids.
Second row seats are Allright.
Never had any major problems besides replacing the water pump and alternator. Both are a pain to change. Other then that I like everything else.
Get average of 22 mpg.

I bought 2011 270xdi Rexton with 5 speed manual. On offroad track and trailer 3.5 Tonnes beats the Volvo. Trunk is pretty big, but interior is pretty cheap. Anyway on a highway Volvo is much better. But if you stuck somewhere it is game over. Comparing Rexton and Volvo XC90 was bad idea.
Avoid the r-design. No spare wheel because of the twin exhausts. Excessive damage to the tyre. Then sit around for hours for a break down service.
Good advertising bucket from Korea to stand on the same shelf with global brands in comparison. You sit in the seats, cheap plastic, all hold together, the doors are closed in the barn - it's no match for Volvo

Rexton clearly wins! It can drive places where the XC90 cant! The only downside about the r7 is the handling. The engine sound of the R7 is amazing compared to the XC90! The XC90 is for volvo fanboys who needs luxury! While the R7 is for no luxury needed people. PS. I have driven both cars and i know the cars well :)

It is a cheaper version of Land Cruiser. It can go on an incline over 45° if good All terrain tires are mounted. My 270xdi is a 5 speed manual.

Comparing different vehicles for different class really. XC 90 should be comparing aganst BMW X5 or Audi Q7. Ssangyong should be comparing to Nissan Pathfinder or Suzuki Grand Vitara.
im from america where we are a bit more critical of off-roaders within our off-roading communities. both of these SUVs/Crossovers are what we would refer to as "softroaders" aka neither of them are proper offroaders or even close. both of them are designed for mild trails at most, and most comfortable on road and on well traveled paths. as for which is the better vehical.. hard for me to say, im not big into SUVs/Crossovers, i like wagons better but if i was to pick, i think the volvo is better all rounder, less compromises and better ride quality and handling, plus for most part, you probably be using this for on road stuff, like shopping and school runs and taking family and date out places and volvo is more dressed for success, also if live in an environment where see regular snow and get a few feet of snow every storm system in winter, maybe worth going for volvo over the other... i have a few volvos myself, live in an area sees a few feet of snow every big storm (though this year was lame) an volvos just sem to cope better. ya a proper jeep with proper tires probably less likely to get stuck but having been there done that i cant say it feels more controllable, volvos somehow how more planted feeling..

How is the Rexton not an off roader? It has 4wd, low range, Body on frame with a solid rear axle. It has everything that a land cruiser has.

Solid axels, AWD/4WD, low range doesn’t make an off-roader… no it’s actually the modification made specially ones made in the field to clear obstictals and get to safety that make an off-roader an off-roader. None of these vehicles in the form presented or mentioned would clear most if not any of our “serious” trails that if that’s only kick you got, your hood as done before you got started… need on serious trails atleast front and rear lockers, maybe a few that need center locker as well. Most of these cars would have punctured fuel tanks, bent or torn links, bars, and arms under their cars from the lack of trail armoring and having rocks smash up the undersides and being hung up on things over and over again puts a ton of stress on factory parts. never mind our “severe” trails that are so locked down the requirement is special modification just to enter and clear the gatekeeper…
@@Honeypot-x9s Center locker is not needed in the Rexton, because it has a part time 4wd without a center diff. It's 50/50 torque split between front and back. I also think the Rexton had an LSD at the back, but I'm not sure.
But really, you have to modify your car if you want to get on the toughest trails. No factory spec car can do those.
In Europe we mostly classify cars like this:
Crossover: 2WD/AWD car like this Nissan rogue/Qashqai, not meant for any kind of off roading.
SUV: Something a bit more capable, like the new Sorento, Explorer or the XC90.
Off roader: Something with a real 4WD, low range, BOF and decent ground clearance. Clearly meant for some off roading.
if you are a tall person, don´t bother looking confortness in the rexton. Seats simply can´t lower much.And offroading is dislikeable cause of continuos bumping your head withy the roof.
The Volvo v8 belongs in the xc90, it'll be around 5-6 second 0-100 kmh with it
The s80 v8 makes 6.5 sec....and its much much faster than xc90 v8

One thing that wasn't covered in this review was safety. Also, while I admit Volvo aren't the leader when it comes to off road vehicles, I have seen videos (and not Volvo Promo ones) of them doing some pretty tough stuff. Also when the Volvo got stuckI would have thought rocking it back and forth as opposed to gunning it would have been a more efficient, better way to get out.

i have 2 cars,a XC70 and a Mercedes G class.. Mercedes G wins of course, the Ssangyong Rexton is a pile of leftover parts from other Korea cars with a MB copy cat engine . try to buy spare parts for a Rexton,, have to call Sherlock holmes to track down the correct parts
I prefer Volvo XC-90 my dad has one form 2005 and we are very happy about it. We went to romanian and back with the car and not a single problem! I would not prefer a Ssangyoung Rexton

I've seen mercedes benzs failing on these roads while I was going faster, lol ! germans only compare volvo to other non premium brands just because they're affraid people will buy volvo and not their scrap metal things they're calling cars...
