Back in the day I had this source port on PSP. I went on a VERY long road trip on a greyhound bus and enjoyed Alien Vendetta and Memento Mori 2 to pass the time. Definitely one of the most nostalgic memories for me 😊
What model of PSP were you using for this? And did you have the CPU set to 333 mhz, or the default setting? Both of these are massively important with home brew. In any case, I remember when this didn't have music. Glad to see they worked on it.
You should have used the port of DooM Legacy for ths PSP. Not throwing shade at the devs of this version but Legacy is better in virtually EVERY WAY than this port, it even supports LAN multiplayer. I had SO MUCH FUN and got so much long-lasting novelty out of playing DooM II co-op on my PSP through LAN with my dad on PC and my friend on my modded Xbox. Good times. :P
Played tons of DOOM and Heretic on the PSP circa 2010-2012. Honestly, I don't think they even considered releasing a port of DOOM during the PSP's lifetime since the classic/retro craze just wasn't there and the handheld delivering console quality experience on the go was just too amazing for the main PSP target audience to care, I mean, you could play God of War, Grand Theft Auto, Parasite Eve 3, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Resistance, Call of Duty and many more. We cared and installed the homebrew, along with emulators and other source ports. It's also notable for being able to run all the PS1 library, so we could even play the PSX DOOM ports even if no DOOM homebrew development happened. Still, I'm surprised that you find the performance of the PSP great for DOOM, recently, the Super Mario 64 decompilation was ported to the PSP and it runs better than the original N64 version, for obvious reasons. Actually, even the NDS could run DOOM smooth as butter if properly ported, heck, even the GBA does the game justice enough. The PSP could easily pull off any other source port such as Duke 3D, Quake I, II or III as well, it's a solidly designed handheld, much slicker than the complex PS2, for instance. I never heard the original music, but it's interesting what you pointed out here, the PSP DOOM allows for mp3s to be reproduced instead of the MIDI soundtrack and I always put whatever I wanted to listen to when playing it, but we could just use the remixed original soundtrack too.
Greetings! Have you ever played BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER 3: I OPENED A PORTAL TO HELL IN THE FAVELA TRYING TO REVIVE MIT AIA I NEED TO CLOSE IT ? It's basically doom mixed with quake but in brazil, cheers!
I have a psp 2001 and a go. The psp 2001 has seen better days, is falling apart and has this bug where the sound sometimes stops working. My go is still working so maybe i can put it on that. How do you enter cheats on this?
Every time i download it, it says corrupted data on my psp, ive tried reinstalling the zip file, decompressing it in and out of psp but nothing works. Is the website broken or am i doing it wrong?
I think the reason for Doom not being on the PSP is just lack of interest. The retro gaming boom wouldn't become a thing until late in the Vita/3DS era. Digital storefronts weren't really all that developed during the PSP era either (they were there, they just weren't great) so everything would have been distributed via UMD disks. Also, I'm surprised at how much portable hardware cannot handle midi. I figure something as basic as Doom's arrangements and soundfonts would be a cakewalk on hardware and software that has had over a decade to develop.
This may be a hot take, But I believe the levels where you’re forced to walk on damage tiles reeks of objectively bad design; but I am willing to tolerate it due to fact Doom helped pioneer the FPS formula.
Definitely a shame that both doom & doom || never officially did hit the psp. Because the psp is sooo much more powerful then the gba. Not only that but those gba versions are disappointing.
NUTS.wad SUPREMACY! PSP is such a great machine! Wish my PSP's battery is fine, would have done this myself as well lol, but can only use it while on the charger

Enjoyed playing doom on my pspGo back in the day. Still have it on there when I want more pocket-sized gaming out and about.
Would have been awesome to have played on PSP back in the day.
Do it now
Love the channel. Keep up the great work!

I helped fixing PSP Doom Legacy in 2010 (R4). It wasn't perfect but better than this from what I remember.
Man... When I was playing Doom on my PSP I actually couldn't get music to work...
I can't get "the thing you can't defeat.wad" to run. Game crashes after difficulty selection...

I wonder what kinda good shenanigans you can do on ps3. I just recently modded mine this year always looking for stuff to do with it.
can you do a video on classic doom on android and ios?
I can definitely look into it!
sounds really clippy starting with E1M2

the doom midis were composed for specific pc only soundcards. Its only possible to emulate these soundcards on pc
The actual midi is just data telling a sound engine which pitches to play in which rythm on which channel.

Replacement batteries are cheap, easy to find online, and pretty easy to replace on all models of PSP.
