I asked him in an email if he could make meth with some of the process info obscured and a law agent present to see to the legality of it as an experiment as well as the destruction of the end product but I doubt he'll go for it. I asked him because I've wondered for the longest time what color and crystallization the pure end product looks like. Before anyone has a go; if I wanted to know how to make meth, there are plenty of research papers accessible on both clearnet and darknet for the howto's.

I think this is the universe saying to me, "It's never too late to start again. Even great people stumble at some point." I really needed this video, especially the intro part. Thank you
Hi nile, first of all thank you for all the effort that you have put into the making of this lab. I plan to become a patreon as soon as I get some revenues whatsoever. You totally deserve it. Secondarily I've got some questions for you. 1)Are you gonna protect your fumehood in some way? Because metal doesn't behave well with a lot of chemicals that you use. 2)Do you plan to install a vacuum pump and nitrogen in your fumehood? Because this would cost something like 1000-1200 additional dollars, but it would increase *so much* the range of your possible experiments. Even suzuki couplings for example. Of course you have spent a lot of money on this project, and your lab is already awesome, so this is totally optional. Also, I would recommend installing running water into your fumehood. I mean putting water in the cupboard below, cuz if you'll have to refrigerate something having water tubes all across your lab isn't going to be fun. Hope this wasn't too long to read, thank you again :)
“I just didn’t see myself doing academic research for a career” the definition of your channel is academic research and I appreciate the hell out of you for sharing all that you do.
I've started watching your videos 2 years ago and you inspired me to study more about the fascinating world of chemistry. You've really improved a lot the quality of your videos in this time. Congratulations for everything you've achieved so far! Greetings from Mexico.
As someone who installs, services, and repairs laboratory instruments for a living, I felt your pain getting that fume hood through the door! Nice job on your layout! Keep up the great work!
You gave me a love back for chemistry I wish I stayed in school if I had a teacher like you mine was a bully always shouting at us thank you for all the knowledge and entertainment you have given me 🙏❤️👍
You may want to consider getting fireproof cabinets for your chemicals. I don’t know how they are in Canada but the fire departments in the US would have a field day with fines. Plus the landlord or insurance company would use this video as evidence against you if god forbid something we’re to happen. I say this as a huge fan. Just a tip to avoid a hefty fine or lawsuit
Bart Plovie Oh I’m aware. But Canada is also very eco-conscious as well. They’re also very progressive in terms of building and fire code. I just would hate to see something like that happen to him.
Anything flammable can go in the explosion proof fridge. Acids, bases, oxidizing and reducing agents should each get an individual acid and base resistant polyethylene bag. If you are in Quebec you WILL get inspections from the fire department, and also any worker safety office (in Quebec it's CNESST) in any commercial building. That is not mentioning the insurance company. PE bags are a cheap and effective way to get around special cabinets. You may need to put a lock on each cabinet though, and get a CO2 and fire detector, and keep a thorough inventory down to the gram of some substances in case of theft or fire. You'll probably also need to get your CPR training if you haven't got it already and commercial fire extinguishers of a different kind than you would for home use. Probably more than one class. The floor mats may also be an issue but that depends what they are made of. If they are acid and base resistant and flame retardant it should be fine.
every time i watch your videos, i get sooo jealous. you took the chance as a chemist and dedicated your time to this channel and now you have your own little lab. should be very proud of yourself
I’ve watched your videos from the beginning. I want to say, I am proud of you for following what you wanted to do to make you happy. So many settle and think this is it and stay unhappy. I wish you the absolute best in all you do!
Awesome ! Nice lab, everything setup to make good educational video ! I can't wait to see what come next. Is the glassware safe in those drawers ? shaking quit a bit when you open or close them ?!
Made me cringe too. I think most glassware is probably more durable than I'm willing to test, but in my office/lab area any roll-y glassware sits in little blocks of rigid pink foam insulation. It is super cheap, quick, and easy, and combined with anti-slip mats I can open and close drawers that are pretty packed with glassware without any special care and get no nerve wracking clinking. I don't encase a whole flask, for instance, I just have a U-shaped block that fits snug on the neck that's the right height to keep it level-ish. You can even make like a strip to hold a bunch of same size flasks, or a pair of strips for condensers, etc. I also made some drawers with two or three layers of thin fiberboard covered in anti slip mats, with foam feet at the corners and a center block that doubles as support for the layer above and a handle to lift the tray out. I started with the idea of making custom foam packing for everything, but quickly realized that it wasn't worth it. The things I described though were quick and easy, and let me safely pack a lot of apparatus into a given space.
I realize that this is old. And I'm still new to chemistry but some suggestions for what to make would be a flaring burner and fume scrubber for your fume hood. And a selfish request from me would be how to make DMG for gold refining. Love your channel, love your work.
i would get some pluck foam to prevent glassware from hitting each other (every time i hear glassware clink on each other i wince.) but other then that nice lab

I've only come across your channel today for the first time and would like to say, Thank you. Once upon a time I was working on a B.S. in Biochem as well, unfortunately things didn't work out as I burned out with an aggressive schedule and was honestly not emotionally mature enough to fully hone my focus to complete my degree. I was about a year away from completing my B.S. and haven't been in a lab since probably 2011, watching your material brought back so many memories of hours of lab work that I always resented because it felt like a complete B.S. earning 3 units for 6 hours of lab time, not including the hours of prep work for success with the lab experiments, in a new nostalgic positive light. I had practically blocked out all of the memories because of how disappointing it was to not finish my B.S. You're channel is awesome and it's definitely inspiring to see you growing doing something you love and clearly have a wonderful spark for! Thank you.
Good job and congratulations on the new lab. Keep making awesome videos! One recommendation. Use a larger bottle for your waste water. Your current setup could overflow with just the volume of clean water you have.
I like your new lab! Of course, you are missing a periodic table poster. I like your solution for running water. Keep a few extra 5 gallon bottles on hand and it's an easy solution if you don't use much water.
No worries about the re-upload. I know there is a lot of people critiquing your work, and a lot of bs details to deal with. Just do what YOU need to do... I would like to know how you dealt with the EH&S regulations, if you get a chance to elaborate about that would be awesome. Congratulations and thank you Nile. Keep it up!
People normally shy away when talking about money, especially when its money they have spent. I really appreciate you letting us in on the cost, give people an idea of what something like this would cost!
Funny you mentioned thinking people would make fun of your voice. Your voice is actually why I started watching your videos. I mean chemistry is fine and all but most of it goes over my head. You just have one of those voices I could listen for hours no matter the topic.
I couldn’t help thinking the entire time that I hope you have excellent security in this place. I’m thinking it because if you’re robbed that’s a lot of dangerous chemicals to be in the hands of people who might not handle it properly or may even intentionally use it to harm people. Keep safe.
In that case, I should say I never subscribe to people but I subscribed to you. (Honestly, it's just you and one of my college instructors I'm subscribed to rn lmao) I found your calcium acetate video for making calcium that's easy for my plants to absorb and soon for cleaning around the house (it's good for mold I hear however I haven't tested that yet) You've opened a new hobby for me in organic chemistry, and learning different things from your channel really helped my research and expand what I do
Bro, that's a ton of work for two people to do in 2 months. Especially if you didn't have much knowledge in construction. You put in mad work for this channel. It's nice to see a success story like this.
Glad you chose to do this. I used to be interested in chemistry in my youth, but the interest was replaced by life. Your channel really woke my interest for chemistry back up, so thank you for that! I'll keep watching!
I've had a bad experience with power boards inside enclosed spaces, don' t know if its more likely to catch fire but just that you're less likely to notice if they do, make sure you check it occasionally for any discoloring of the plastic etc
PingasTheFourth yeah your right but I was in the place to witness a short circuet in a cupboard and I was certenly greatfull that there was a smoke detector in this room. Those things don't cost that much but they can save your life in the right Moment from my point of View there is nothing that would speak against them
PingasTheFourth I agree with you that there is no high risk that something could happen most likely there will never be a Problem with it but i am sure that you agree that a bit of prevention in form of a smoke detector for something like 5$ is not wrong, I mean it does not hurt anyone and as you said it will most likely never detect something there but when against all means there is a short circuit a smoke detector could help to raise awareness of this Problem before it even becomes one
I was a HUGE chemsitry nerd as a kid. In those days you could be given a chemistry set for Christmas, one with real chemicals and real information. I had a tremendous amount of fun with mine. Really love your channel!
Well, you did ask for suggestions... so here goes. My only major issue I see is the tiny little button that you'll have to find in the case you get some corrosive material in your eyes and need to flush them. It may be easy enough when you're not blind and/ or panicking, but I imagine it would be a different story otherwise. A huge congrats on the new space! I'm so excited for you! :D Be safe.
This pump is mostly on idle, when not used, i guess. So you could/should leave it on, while working in the lab and just turn it off after finishing the day.

This is an amazing accomplishment. Gathering the resources and - even harder - applying the knowledge to build a lab essentially from scratch is something you should always be proud of. Way to follow the hands-on imperative!
I Think you should add labels and hazard labels on the door of the cabinets and drawers, so that if someone inspect your place, you wouldn't be in trouble... And is good for finding things. Goog Luck with your channel!

You avoided the traditional academic/research route, but you're doing something educational and challenging, and succeeding at it financially too. It makes me feel pretty optimistic about my future. Thanks for everything, I hope your channel continues to grow and be successful, you deserve it!

Dude that is a sweet friggin lab, really excited to see what you can produce now, though that explosion-proof fridge is far too small to protect you from the nuclear blast.
Also, flammable things beside the oven. Hmm.
Poisons too
i'm so proud of you. I have to make sure my son sees this video, it's the perfect balance of hard work, planning and "doing what you love." You are our favorite applied Chemist.
I've subbed this channel back then when it only had a few hundred subs and it's amazing to see how it grew! All the background information is pretty interesting, because I can relate to a lot of your decisions and feelings, like the feeling about doing experiments at home. It is strange how you get used to it after awhile. Very nice video! And congratulations! :)
Random Experiments Int. - Experiments and syntheses same man it's amazing to see how far people come while we just sit back and enjoy the show, it's like the Truman show for millions of kids

Great to see your channel evolution, thank you for sharing.

Been loving your channel Nile. I’ve seen basically every single one of your videos. There’s something very calming and meditative about your videos. Been a life long lover of science myself. Fellow Canadian here too (Vancouver) . Looking forward to more great videos! Keep up the amazing work!
Also want to add that you and other YTers have helped me through some tough times in my life recently. Not that you knew of course but when I’ve been having a tough time I come to your channel and others. I know others do too from seeing comments in the past.
I'm glad I was able to help in some way :)
I think this is the universe saying to me, "It's never too late to start again. Even great people stumble at some point." I really needed this video, especially the intro part.
Thank you
I'm a little late to the NileRed channel, but I LOVE that live-edge table in the studio. Love the videos...
Honestly, you are THE ONLY PERSON who makes chemistry interesting! Love your videos!!
I'm hoping you have a few fire extinguishers around the place!!!
“I just didn’t see myself doing academic research for a career” the definition of your channel is academic research and I appreciate the hell out of you for sharing all that you do.
No, it's not.
It's his own research, or hobby.
I like how he says "this is my poison box" so calmly.
I’m really glad that you and your channel improved that much. Keep going NileRed, you rock.
I've started watching your videos 2 years ago and you inspired me to study more about the fascinating world of chemistry. You've really improved a lot the quality of your videos in this time. Congratulations for everything you've achieved so far!
Greetings from Mexico.
You have way more glassware than the university lab I work in does. I'd love to work in your lab, that looks absolutely fantastic, keep it up!
#LetsGetHimSomeRunningWater !
AlChemicalLife That would make an excellent funding goal for Patreon!
Drainage would be the far larger hassle/cost. A few suitable fire extinguishers and a fire blanket would be a good gift imho.
As someone who installs, services, and repairs laboratory instruments for a living, I felt your pain getting that fume hood through the door! Nice job on your layout! Keep up the great work!
“With the help of my dad” made me so emotional 🥺 my dad helps me follow my scientist career dreams too.
This is awesome. You should be so bloody stoked!

As a chemical engineer, seeing your lab setup makes me super excited and jealous.
I'm so late for NileRed channel, but I'm so proud of you. Congratulation of you, good luck
Not every country is litigation happy like the US you know...
Bart Plovie Oh I’m aware. But Canada is also very eco-conscious as well. They’re also very progressive in terms of building and fire code. I just would hate to see something like that happen to him.
Yeah I was also think whether it's a very good idea to show his lab on screen. But I'm sure happy that he allowed us to see it!
You can usually pick these up for a fraction of the new price at auctions. So start subscribing to equipment auctions in your area.
Make sure DeeDee can't get in

I’ve watched your videos from the beginning. I want to say, I am proud of you for following what you wanted to do to make you happy. So many settle and think this is it and stay unhappy. I wish you the absolute best in all you do!

I recommend 3blue1brown for the same purpose. And EEVblog if you need to wake up...
Awesome ! Nice lab, everything setup to make good educational video ! I can't wait to see what come next.
Is the glassware safe in those drawers ? shaking quit a bit when you open or close them ?!
Yeah, its all good. No need to worry :)
I am so glad that you came to youtube and decided to share
I realize that this is old. And I'm still new to chemistry but some suggestions for what to make would be a flaring burner and fume scrubber for your fume hood. And a selfish request from me would be how to make DMG for gold refining.
Love your channel, love your work.
This was really cool to see, and what a nice Dad to help you out.
i would get some pluck foam to prevent glassware from hitting each other
(every time i hear glassware clink on each other i wince.) but other then that nice lab
I left my masters one semester from completion in 2019, and for the same reasons you stated. I lost interest in my research after failing in the applications aspect. Now I’m halfway into an o chem PhD with a renewed interest in chemistry and have always appreciated your videos! Keep up the good work 👍🏼
Fast forward to 2022 you now have a much bigger lab and office space. To me personally, you're the only one who can make these chemistry stuff look so fun and I'm not even a chemistry enthusiast. Happy for you!
Ha-ha-ha I was just thinking the same thing.. i'm like wait a minute, the volume of that waste bottle is about half of the feed bottle.
"This little bucket here is all my poisons".........lol
I couldn’t help thinking the entire time that I hope you have excellent security in this place. I’m thinking it because if you’re robbed that’s a lot of dangerous chemicals to be in the hands of people who might not handle it properly or may even intentionally use it to harm people. Keep safe.

In that case, I should say I never subscribe to people but I subscribed to you. Literally my fav TH-cam channel

Pete Smith Maybe put a smoke detector there to, those things can really save the day
tbh he should be using proper surge protectors, not regular power banks.

So you could/should leave it on, while working in the lab and just turn it off after finishing the day.

seriously an issue i found after a resilvering reaction on a prism using nitric acid, sugar, caustic soda and silver nitrate detonated in my face without goggles. assume everything will blow up and have water ready and a tap is not good enough. fortunately I can still see.

The lab looks so professional! I'm so proud of you!!! (ps you're super cute)
This is an amazing accomplishment. Gathering the resources and - even harder - applying the knowledge to build a lab essentially from scratch is something you should always be proud of.
Way to follow the hands-on imperative!
The audacity with which you bang the doors close, love it.
I Think you should add labels and hazard labels on the door of the cabinets and drawers, so that if someone inspect your place, you wouldn't be in trouble... And is good for finding things.
Goog Luck with your channel!
Benedict Leung not america so I doubt he would be in trouble. It's just him using the lab so why bother.
George Saliz I'd guess it's helpful to know for firefighters which cabinet contains what kind of chemicals?
did you need to get any special permits (or just report what you're doing) to build the lab?
either from the building owners or authorities 🤔
and thank you very much for your content 👍
Goran Blažič I don't think he needs any permits here in Quebec
ZacxRicher really? interesting... and cool, of course... 👍
not sure what I was expecting really, just curious ☺️

At first, I thought, "how did a high school kid get such a background in sophisticated chemistry"?, because of how young you look. But the more I watched, the more I was fascinated with the manipulation of chemistry you do.
