We have a different problem in the US, we have the machines but health insurance won't pay for MRI in cancer detection and scan can be frightfully expensive out of pocket. The current PSA test has only a 50% or less accuracy. Because of my acute family history I was closely screened and mine was caught very early and successfully treated by radiation. But it can recur. The good thing is that radiology companies can't afford to have the machine sitting idle so out of pocket is coming down. My problem is i can't do closed MRI.
I have an enlarged prostate and a high PSA for my age. Since the PSA is high my urologist did a needle biopsy in 2017. It was clear. My PSA continued to go up, so in 2021 they did an MRI. It took 50 minutes (not 10 minutes) and it found a 11mm long legion witch they considered highly likely to be cancer. I then had an MRI guided needle biopsy (they use the MRI imagine to find the exact spot of the legion) and that turned out to be negative for cancer. I think the MRI is a good tool for helping to find abnormal cells, but from my experience, the needle into the prostate is always going to be required.
I had an MRI on my prostate today, waiting on the results. Did you ask your GP for a guided needle biopsy and how long after did you have it done? Love the logo, are you a Rush fan.
This is really old news. We've known for nearly 30yrs that MRI is the gold standard in prostate cancer diagnosis. Trouble is that MRI scanners aren't cheap & the NHS can't afford lots of them. Everyone wants a slice of them for their own speciality, so us old blokes get shoved to the back of the queue because we aren't a priority. It's vital that if you are being seen for suspected prostate cancer you insist that you get an MRI instead of a PSA.
$1614 for our MRI payment… insurance only paying $400 after we spend $6500 a year for insurance. Thanks Obama… worst insurance we have ever had since Obama.
I saw an episode of Doc Martin where a woman consulted the Dr about a breast lump and he gave her an ultrasound scan in his surgery which showed there was no cancer. I have just a moment ago Googled if MRI scans can detect breast cancer and they certainly CAN including lumps which can be missed on mammograms. Certainly makes one wonder doesn't it? Also there is another form of breast cancer screening called thermography which doesn't put the woman at risk (unlike mammography where women are put at higher risk of developing cancer) and is also pain free. In the mainstream media one only hears about the mammography. I often wonder whether the health service has a certain agenda we women don't know about.

This came back with a reading of 310 and I was subsequently advised by Oncology at the hospital that I have prostrate cancer that has metastasised throughout my bones. To anyone reading this - DON’T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER.

Everything was fine except my PSA was measured as 6.4 and it was highlighted in the report. So what did I do?....Nothing because I did not know what PSA was nor did I try to find out...I forgot about it and just carried on. Last year now 76 years old, I was going to the toilet a lot and sometimes urgently to pee....so I went to the doctor, who took a blood sample and a few weeks later another blood sample....later followed by an MRI and biopsy. A letter from the urology department asked me come in and have a talk with a surgeon. I was informed that my PSA was 11.4 and that I hade a tumour in my prostate with a gleeson score of 4/3 and I had prostate cancer, but because of my age and the size of my prostate, surgery was not practical and the best option was R/T if I wanted. Also I had better get a another scan to check if the cancer had spread....Thankfully not, at which point I decided to get treament...(before that I had decided to leave well alone)....I was so relieved that no cancer outside my prostate was found. So later that year got the due process...HR + Radicle R/T....completed December just after my 77th birthday. Last 6 months I suffered the consequences I was warned about....every one of them including using catheters, Now I am much better and got rid of the catheters, but on several pills each day. The fatigue is also much less and I am getting erections again, but no ejaculate. I have had 2 PSA checks and good results.....Next month will be my 9 months post R/T PSA check. So not so bad..... BUT, those PSA checks does bother me a lot, because if the PSA goes up, then I am back to square one.
Very interesting, and surely the way to go. My prostrate is enlarged, and will probably need to be 'scraped' soonish, but my PSA levels are normal. Whether the prostrate has malignant cells we don't know, so a MRI should help.
The problem in England is that some GPs don't listen to the patients especially MEN they miss the signs & hence a poor outcome! I went to my GP in 2011 when I was 49 stating "It started 2 days ago I'm getting up 16 times per night peeing" I don't drink or smoke,fast forward to 2019 eight years passed I'm 10st my GP says I'm healthy,I push and push he does a PSA test. My GP calls me back he's BRIGHT RED in color to tell me I have stage 3 advnced prostate cancer! That's how stupid my GP was in my diagnosis 8 years went by me going backwards and forwards to him & the hospital yet NONE joined the dots up of all my symptoms of weight loss sweating at night getting up peeing 16 times per night! I had to move surgery because this incompetent GP has virtually killed me my prostate cancer is really AGGRESSIVE! It's going to kill me and there is nothing anyone can do about it that's the sad fact of my interactions with the NHS regarding my prostate cancer!👊

There will definitely have to be cross-analysis of these kinds of results here then. After all, they said sadly that this policy could take 10 years to implement.
And then, what would you tell the guy highlighted in the story? With a negative PSA and positive MRI? Probably best to calm down, no one is taking away the PSA test
It's all well and good all these men who go on TV opining us to get our prostates checked. How pray tell? Go to you GP (if you can get to see them) and ask for a PSA test? You'll be told unless you have symptoms not to have one, there is no chance they'll send you for a precautionary MRI, you might if you are lucky persuade them to give you a referral for a private MRI, which of course is too expensive for many.
We neeeed to be building more of them. This has been needed for soooo many years it’s insane and makes NO SENSE. Just expand the business and build mooore of them already. 😓 THEY’VE HAD ENOUGH TIME.

I just had a MRI scan in the U.S. after many elevated PSAs, and my prostate MRI scan was about 40 minutes with me in a claustrophobic tube that was banging the loudest noises you will hear outside of combat. Was it worth it? Yes, but let's not minimize the testing experience.
Just had mri in the uk and agree 40 minutes about right. This Picked up lesions so they sent for a biopsy days after the mri. UK has got their act together on this. Also agree very claustrophobiic ask to go in feet first not so bad. My first biopsy had a Gleeson score of 3+3=6 which i believe is a good result. Just had a second biopsy to double check the first biopsy, fingers crossed nothing changed. NHS in the UK is in much shape than the detractors suggest.
They should work on reducing loud sound which is sometime suffocating. Receltly, I had to be inside the MRI for 5times as I have brain tumor. And it is affordable for rich people.

In Canada you will be waiting forever to get a government funded MRI around six months or longer because people who get admitted to the ER and diagnosed with even suspicion of something serious cut in line. I heard the wait times are worse in BC, the Atlantic and Pirarie provinces. In Quebec, the rich have easy and quick access to MRIs at private clinics because they pay for it. Some old Supreme Court ruling let’s Quebec circumvent the Federal Canada Health Act.

They can certainly screen for abdominal tumors in women….
But insurance won't pay for a scan with contrast. So why get exposed if the tech can't read it.

MRI Tech here... There is Breast MRI for diagnosing cancer, it also involves very uncomfortable positions, is three-times as long and requires an IV

bullshit. i had prostate cancer a year ago (61) and had an mri. nothing showed up until the biopsy.
Same here. Had high PSA. Had MRI. Negative. Had biopsy. Showed cancer.

I was the other way around, my biopsy was negative but the mri showed cancer that had metastasized

I was offered an MRI scan one day after visiting the Urologist in the UK. I was very impressed with the professionalism and speed.
Depends on where you live I guess. I have Kaiser and got an appointment 2 weeks after my urologist put in the order.
