this was a tricky one due to the opening doors but I do try and show the best method.

Lovely job , just make you think about the girls at Binns Rd assembling these things day in day out for 6 years, must have been some sighs of relief when production stopped in 1977.

I admire your perseverance and patience. I recall trying to put the door back properly on two of these model buses when I was around thirteen, and I used sellotape between the doors and the door frames. But unfortunately, it meant some of the paint came off the doors. I still have the models carefully wrapped up in a box.

Those doors!!! 10 mins was super quick Martin... mine took nearly 30 and completely exhausted my repertoire of curses and oaths. What a relief when they finally dropped in !

That's a really good restoration. I've done several Dinky Atlantean's and I'm very pleased with them, as I changed them from Yellow Pages to KHCT in Hull.

very good,Martin.those doors are a faff,but can be fitted without the need for tape.(having done 15 of them!).In reality,what you need to do,is hold the button on the mechanism,and have the casting at a slight angle.this worked for me,having spent an age working out what to do.Btw,the doors on the real buses were red,not white.

Nice restoration. Preferred the finish on this than your 289 RM. I've restored two of these. One is green. I made boxes too.
Enjoyed watching this coming along, I think it's possible to buff up glazing with some kind of metal polish.
Yes this has to be the hardest of the diecast buses to put together, I do some times use auto sol metal polish ,on the window units if thay are only lightly scratched.

I restored one of these a few years ago, to get the doors back in and working was a nightmare. I did the bus in Greater London Service colours (Green). Yours is a great job martin, well done.

Awesome bus to work on. You have as many spray paint cans as I do, lol. This was a lot of work. Don't know if I would have had the patience. You did a great job on this 😺👍

Great result Martin, looks fabulous on the magic roundabout at the end👌👍😊, those flipping doors, the feeling of relief when they finally go in, I did a double restoration, one red, one green, nothing seemed to fit well on the green kit one, the red one wasn’t quite so bad, and the repro doors didn’t seem to have long enough hinge pins. I had plenty advice on how I should have put them in, I ended up using bluetac, but in reality I don’t think there is any easy way of doing them! The window units were tight in both models too even without any old paint stuck to them and the repro ones were tight to put back in to the point I thought they were going to crack putting them in!

Cheers nick ,yes those flipping doors,I did try a couple of different ways but without success, the tape definitely helped, I will be doing a couple more at some point, not sure when , I can imagine the repo doors being not so good especially the pins

Epic video and very funny at times Martin. That bus was sure giving you trouble, but best get into a mess with a diecast bus than a chain saw! I love the end result, it looks terrific.

I had one of these when I was a kid, great fun, although it did cause me to hurt my thumb a little bit, through pressing the lever to ring the bell all the time!
🤣 the bell lever is the one to hurt your finger or thumb .

Love the way this bs. Turned out I remember riding on one of these AEC Merlin they were alfull they had them running between railway stations as a quick connection which they were not.

one not only has to bow before the creaivity of the developers, but also before the dexterity of the production line workers...

Outstanding result Martin I'm sure that was fiddley to do but you stuck with it and it came out amazing very well done on the paint and crack or not its a lot better than before I no I said that had a few diecast to send you I haven't forgotten its been a busy start to the year with deaths in the family but as soon as I get sorted will send them your way within in the next week 👍

Superb mate ,see told you those doors are a bugger to refit ,and a big thank you as I’m one of your bus experts 😂,had a funny thought when you tested the doors once you refitted them you was saying “open,close open,close ……” I could imagine you sitting in the cab of a real bus pressing the doors buttons ,mind you I did in training soon wears off 😊,I have mine in my cabinet and even now when I clean it I’m careful around the doors the amount of time dad had to refit mine as a nipper in the end I could do it ,dinky done two versions and two interior versions of the red on blue interior and a yellow also a metallic red similar to the captain scarlet shade ,the kit nic made was a country area merlin when LT controlled what became London country after 1970 some reason the rest of the country called them AEC swifts and LT merlins later shorter ones were called swifts ?,I better stop once you get me started on buses I’ll be writing a novel here ,all the best my friend ,Mark 😊👍🏻

Hi Martin a bit of a troublesome beast with those doors but well worth the effort it turned out great. I saw a chap on another channel Paul Restore he did a wonderful job making his own tires and window unit looked like he was using that stuff the dentist used to make molds he did a Corgi superior hearse the red and white one. I've got one of those to do one of these days. Juliet says put it on a list if it's not on a list it will never get done. I think she's right there's always other things cropping up to do around the house and to that little red girlfriend Rebecca who I have locked up in my shed 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂lol. Catch you next week mate.👍

25:31 Oh the Struggle.... t doesn't have to be thought. Get the doors set in their top Pin-Holes, place some tape across the doors to the body from the outside to keep them in place while you install the rest of the parts. That should keep the doors in situ until you get the base secured, then remove the tape on the outside.

I’ve got 2 of these at home a red one and green one both in play worn condition but When I get round to it I’m going to build one good one out of the two and paint it London country green so going to watch this video carefully to see how it comes apart and rebuild it too

Hi 👋 Martin, what was the paint colour you used, I have a Spot-on Routemaster ready for paint and the colour looks right. Good 👍 work on the video. Maybe you could mention paint colours as this would help for restorations.

What a pain with all the working parts, I used to find if it doesn't work go to the pub a couple of pints and come back normally it goes to gether easy, mind you that was when I was younger. You did well on that Martin it did look like new. Now know don't touch one of them I did collect efe buses 20 years a go still got a few not many. Did put the Matchbox king-size combined Harvester on the back of the Foden flat back as my Wife remembers her Dad driving with it on the back as a 13 year old girl he taught her to rope and sheet old fashioned stuff but she did go and do a driving course and drove a class 1 did everything spot on. That was then now we are all in retirement. Well can I suggest you take care I have seen to many friends loose their fingers by circular saw, band saw , even one slipped with a chisel and cut his little finger off, long ago and they did not attach them then went for dog food. @@martindaredare Are yes your only a baby yet 65 + 3 = my age this year I took a very early retirement 47 sh not told her yet. She thinks I'm a dinky car mechanic, did repairs to mobility equipment a few years ago got a load of stuff metal wood from a friend so gave it all good home's to go to. Did still have mobility equipment to take apart to make good from old, gave a man we know a 4 wheel walker and over bed table, so bit more room in my workshop. 3 years ago had a bad turn and never did it after. I have put two of these back together, its never easy and there an element of luck involved, I dont know how they managed to get them together at the factory in Liverpool. I still my favourite model of all time though. I have four of these, two flat red ones, one with red doors, one with cream and I have a custom painted one, blue and cream, the person who repainted it, could not get the doors to work properly, that was the first time I had a go at fixing the doors on one of these. Today I got some replacement doors for my shinny red one, its in rough shape, but it has a rare air France livery, so I was not going to repaint it. I got it together quite quick the first time, but one of the doors at the back kept jumping out, so I had another go, it took me a sight longer the second time, I think there is some slight damage to the mechanism, thats why the door jumps out.
Your a brave soul , rebuilding more then one of these, I found if the door pins are slightly worn down it will throw the whole operation out ,that was the problem with repo doors .

The original doors are easier to fit I agree, the metal is more durable, but I only found the repro ones because I bought some repro ramps for my Dinky Thornycroft tank transporter, they are getting hard to find these days, I am glad I bought my collection when I did, prices are way higher now. I have serious damage to my neck, so I have not made a video for awhile, but if you would like to see some pics, let me know your email, I will let you know when I have it, if you want to delete it afterwoods.

After further investigation on the Air France decal, I dont think its original, it may have been put on afterwoods, but the paint is the shinny spectra kind, so its still pretty rare, I can find none of them for sale.
