Put that Bimmer on a battery charger, replace the wiper blades with refills, and spray some smelly "new car smell" spray then give dad a bill for $400. Congrats, you are now a service tech at the dealership.

Good video. this engine (N47) is also the same on some later (post 2016) toyota diesels such as the RAV4. Hope you remembered to tighten the oil filter housing when you let the car down though (easily forgotten)! I also use a vacuum fluid extractor down the dipstick tunnel rather than removing sump plug for most oil changes as this engine's sump is fairly level and I get 5.2 ltres out every time (I know some view these as inferior to removing sump plug but it is alot less messy.)

I want to buy one of these cars here in Ireland however this specific model with n47 engine are notorious for timing chain issues because BMW say the oil only needs to be changed every 18k miles which is absolute bullshit. It should be done every 6k miles in my opinion and many others on the BMW forums

    • @ccie2325
      @ccie2325 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Around 2012 the F10 520D started coming out with the N47T engine (no longer with a N47). These are much better in respect to the timing chain. There is another school of thought that says the timing chain issues on the original N47 are much more of a problem with lack of servicing, and less of a problem with more frequent oil changes as you say.

    • @mrgcc

Hi Paul, there is a lot of choice really out there, you could go directly to BMW and get the oil from them but I believe they also use just Castrol. Should be 5w30, I used Castrol here just make sure it has the markings stating that it is for BMW, I believe it is the C3. But Mobil 1 is also good to use too.

The first plastic engine cover with the BMW sign, I managed to get that lid open but when I put it back... DOES it have to be clicked fit on all 3 dimpled sockets ? I just basically put the lid on the top and tried to fit it as it was originally but I don't think it properly got adjusted. What I am saying is, I think it is still loosely fitted as such I think I am hearing the diesel engine sound more loudly as well as the vibration felt ever more ( perhaps I am feeling placebo effect here but still).
All I could do was to punch the cover with my side fist but please tell me, how do I adjust the cover properly as in original state?

It was his car indeed. He lived far away so it was a quick day visit and I did the job for him. Unfortunately he is no longer with us..

The guy is actually going to create an oil leak as he did not bother to change the oil gaskets on the oil filter cap. I work on rebuilding accident damaged BMW a lot of the time and I also give them a full service as I used to work at BMW service shop for 4 years. If you want an oil leak and an expensive repair cost from BMW then do not follow tis video.

Interesting feedback. Car has since driven fine with no oil leak but appreciate the concerns.

@@mrgcc no problem. sorry if it came off as a bit rude but I don't want people to end up getting a leak and take it to a garage and they charge a lot for possible damage to pistons and such internal components. Other than that, the job was similar to how we do it at BMW

I only change oil filter seal every fifth time on my F10. Never had any leak issues due to that. Have done already about 9 oil changes myself. Car just went over 200k miles

@@hammerfm that's actually really good feedback! Glad to hear it was so good to you. Means that it can still be save without changing it every oil change.

@Mr GCC I don't want to be negative, but I would suggest the following:
      - Getting a tripod or gimbel to film your footage. No one likes a shake camera.
      - Be direct and straight to the point. Don't use 10 words when 3 will do.
      - Clearly highlight what you are going to cover at the start of the video in short bullet points.
      - A 10 min video is quite long however, even though YT favour long vids, this can be off putting when a user is looking for information.
      - Let the viewer know what tools they will be needing to perform this job. Who is this video aimed at? Mechanics or Joe blogs?
      hope this helps.
