I don't know anything about the politics of New Zealand. However I can understand how disrespectful it would be for the white people who colonized the country to change a treaty without compromising with the people native to the land. I'm glad they advocate for themselves.

Wait for supporters of the bill. I read the ACT’s Q+A about it, I read the bill itself, and the disclosure statement from the MoJ. It appears that the MoJ has raised two very obvious concerns as the bill pertains to NZ’s obligations under Waitangi and International treaties. The Waitangi tribunal also stated that it was “unfair, discriminatory, and inconsistent with the principles of the Treaty, contrary to the article 2 guarantee of tino rangatiratanga…”
I’m not from New Zealand but to me it seems clear this would cause a constitutional crisis in the country? also if the argument is that the Treaty Act of 1975 is not specific enough and disagree with the “partnership” interpretation, and they believe article 1 states the gov. Of NZ has the right to govern over all the people how does that juxtapose with the 2014 tribunal finding that the Māori never ceded sovereignty to Britain?

The argument for "equal rights for all" erases the distinct rights guaranteed to Māori under Te Tiriti and fails to account for the enduring effects of colonization. True justice requires honoring Te Tiriti, addressing inequities, and upholding the unique partnership between Māori and the Crown. Equity, not blanket equality, is the path to a fair and just society.

"Kāwana!" "No, don't do that." "Ka whakamanuwhiritia koe e au…" It feels like that Monty Python sketch in the castle in the swamp. So awesome.
The irony of using Ka Mate, a haka born from Māori vs Māori conflict, is that it diminishes the haka's mana in this context imo. Still, it’s no surprise it goes viral-the 'young wāhine' battling the 'evil British Empire' is a compelling narrative. That is why people are moved to tears without any underlying understanding.
Meanwhile, ordinary and less theatrical Māori and Pākehā quietly carry on, working hard to build a better future and make life a little easier for everyone.

All love and respect and support
For those who bravely and proudly speak their language, perform their ritual and demonstrate their culture
And use it to fight for and protect the rights of their people
    Nice job done
And that man face and reaction is so disrespectful and offensive
He does not deserve that position at all
He show no tolerate amd patience
Have no respect for those people and their culture
Not nice and not acceptable at all
    You must accept the reality
    You are intruders
That is their lands, belongs to the them,
Theur lands, their culture, language and rituals, rules and lows
You can nit force your way of life and your unfair rules and lows to them and expect them to stay quiet and accept you injustice
You have no right to put limitations on those people
Who respect to them in their own land
Do not look at other people like that from above
    Those brave people deserve respect
You better put the lows and rules to serve the people of new zealand and specially the native ones and be in favour of them

At zero point during the reading yesterday did Labour, Greens or Tepati Maori point to any specific part in the bill that they find offensive.
The media are also complicit in that they wont report on what the bill actually says and aims to achieve.
You have Tepati Maori saying this bill is "devisive" and then seconds later openly calling for a separate Maori government, independent from the crown. The height of hypocrisy.

It is racist and totally loaded against the rights of Maori in wanting to give the same rights afforded to Maori based on the Treaty which is an agreement fought over for years by Maori and the crown to others who are basically fresh off the boat and don't give a damn of Maori rights and will agree to whatever the Pakeha want.

This certainly was a historic day for New Zealand and for democracy. The Treaty Principles Bill passed it's first reading in the House of Parliament. A bill that seeks to clarify the constitutonal interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document. I applaud and thank David Seymour for his bravery and honor in presenting the bill and for those MPs who voted to pass it to it's second reading. This bill could get the most submissions ever from Kiwis three times over. They might need sophisticated AI and dozens of staffers just to organise it. They may have to extend submissions out for a full year aa they will keep piling and piling in. All Kiwis know about this and have strong feelings about this issue.
