Bright Eyes was written for the film version of Richard Adams' Watership Down a story about rabbits, this song by by Mike Batt.
"The song relates to the transition from life to death. This is highlighted by Hazel, initially when wounded by a farmer's gun. Finally, at the end of the short animal life-span, Hazel (then Hazel-rah) departs his body and enters a spirit world."

I never read the book until I moved to a house on a street named after the book. The developer must have loved the book because several of the streets around me are named after characters in the book. The reference to bright eyes and burning pale is because of how the light goes out of eyes when someone dies.

My mother read us Watership Down as kids (she also read us Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit etc. she was a hippie 😅) and I remember I was so upset by it. Then we watched the movie a few years later and my younger brother was traumatised and couldn’t sleep without the light on for a few years lol. I love the story though even though it disturbed me as a kid.

As lots of people have pointed out, this song is about dying. You’d think an animation couldn’t be that affecting, but when you hear this song in the context of what’s happening in the film and you see what’s being depicted on screen, just… OMG 😭😭

  • @Markhypnosis1
    @Markhypnosis1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

As others have said, this was written for the animated film Watership Down. It's set in the idyllic English countryside and the characters are rabbits. It's all about their trials and tribulations and is actually quite a dark film.
It looks even more quintessentially English because it's done with watercolour painting, giving the rolling hilly landscapes a soft dreamy feeling, which contradicts the film's dark feel.
This song is played when one of the main rabbit characters is dying after a fight. Well worth watching.

Once upon a time, long ago when we made our favorite song lists on tape cartridges, his song "99 Miles to LA" was right up there on mine amongst all that great rock of those times.

    Wikipedia:
"Bright Eyes" is a song written by British songwriter Mike Batt and performed by Art Garfunkel.
"Bright Eyes" topped the UK Singles Chart for six weeks and became Britain's biggest-selling single of 1979, selling over a million copies. Richard Adams, author of the original novel, is reported to have hated the song.[2] A cover of the song was later used explicitly in the Watership Down television series as its theme song.

Art's using a particular singing technique that opens the throat and pushes out the a high yet hollo-ish sound. Andy Williams also uses a similar technique but with a lower hollowish baritone sound.

Art's portfolio is absolutely superb. I HIGHLY recommend that you take the time to listen to his solo works. I'd strongly recommend his 1975 album, Breakaway. But all of his LP's are just wonderful. Yes, Paul was the songwriter and quite a performer in his own right. But, anyone who thought Art would just fade away after their breakup was sorely mistaken.
Art sings songs written by numerous different songwriters, including a number of songs by Jimmy Webb, a well respected composer (who was born and raised in my state of Oklahoma).
As always, thank you for sharing. So glad you liked this.
    Steve

The songwriter, Mike Batt, was asked to write a song about death for the soundtrack to Watership Down. He said his father was dying of cancer at the time and that was his inspiration for the song so it’s about death and isn’t specifically about bunnies.

Truly EVIL? That's a bit much, lol. It is sad and touching, and addresses coming to the end of life. In the movie (which was indeed traumatizing for most children because it wasn't supposed to be a children's movie in the first place, but it was one of my favorites anyway) Fiver was looking for his brother Hazel, who'd been wounded, and was guided through the forest by the Black Rabbit of Death, a beneficent figure kind of like an angel but of the rabbit underworld. There is nothing evil about the Richard Adams' story or this song.
