Really good video Ondra. It's a fun twist to see how someone like Jo, whose main field is writing, thinks about and approaches the experience of climbing. A really good fit for the channel and very well edited.
I like it when people really enjoying their hobbies and sharing their thought about the same interesting sport with their own words!!! good job adam!!!
60 year old you will never out-run, out-jump or out-last a 20 year old you. But the 60 year old can out-climb the 20 year old through sustained commitment, determination and intelligence. Probably what I love more than anything about climbing.
Did not see this crossover coming at all, but I love it! Interesting to hear Jo talk about his mental process in climbing, and it really feels a lot like my own fascination spark with climbing - being exposed to fear while knowing you are safe really allows you to look at your own mental process. It's really that combination of doing something challenging in the physical domain, cognitive domain (the challenge of reading etc.) and in emotion-regulation which is the thrill of climbing for me. Such an optimal challenge and only against yourself and the rock, it really allows easy access to flowstate and feelings of competence when you work with the fear. Really good, thanks Adam and Jo!
This honestly would make a great podcast concept. Do a climb together first, then talk after. Bring in interesting guests that like climbing, or expose them to climbing. Adam asks really good questions and honestly would make a great host.
I simply love Jo's writing work and now that I see that he has a deep passion for climbing I can kinda see why. The way he can keep and release tension in his writing is sublime, and now that I am recently becoming passionate about climbing I can see how this mirrors into the climbing (or even hiking in a way) experience: the constant absolutely safe step forward, immediately followed by some deep thought about the next one. What a great video Adam, thank you so much!
Probably one of the most inspiring and meaningful video i've seen about climbing , a beautiful encounter between two person who love climbing with pure heart , for me as well ,in climbing , the level of difficulty means nothing it's all about personnal commitment and listening to ourselves , on top of that we've got the privilege to be able to share this amazing feelings with a beautiful community that climbing offers ! Thank you for this delightful moment !
@@kristofferopstad2203I don`t know if I can name only one absolute favorite author but during a recent period in my life, when I started commuting to work on a daily bases by bus I started reading his criminal novels and I couldn`t stop and I really enjoyed them. It`s definitely the most books from one single author that I have read in my life.
@@kristofferopstad2203 I always imagined him being Harry Hole, that there must be some character identification and I had great sympathy for Harry Hole, who doesn`t right? :) When I learned something more about the author I realized that he and his life is even more interesting. Defintely someone I`d like to have a few beers with.
It's so enjoyable to hear the climbing experience through the eyes of someone skilled at putting things into words. Some who are, perhaps, better climbers would not be able to express things so clearly.
I'm just back from Tonsai and neighbouring Railay Jo mentions here. It's in Thailand and I'm not surprised he got hooked here. Epic scenery and amazing climbing.
Excellent Adam. Wonderful video and interview. I almost got to climb with Joe many years ago when he was in Adelaide for a writer’s festival. Now I feel that I have.
Amazing video! So cool to see a writer whose books accompanied me from child age until becoming a young adult actually doing the same sport and being incredibly good at it!
Would recommend you all to search up Jo Nesbø for anyone not really knowing him. He is very unique individual. A multitalent to the rarest degree. Whatever he have decided to pursue, he has always managed to become one of the very best at it. Football player (got a injury stopping him), professional stock trader, author, economist, director, great great musician and so much more. It's pretty absurd.
That's awesome that you take time to just climb casually and stress free. With my OCD I would go too hard with it and drive myself crazy. You get upset when you fall understandably, but it doesn't seem to last long before your back talking and laughing again.Me,I wouldn't be happy unless I flashed every route, but that's just me lol.Oh P.S. can't wait to see more on Project Big,super stoked about that one!
Hah, how cool! Jo is a polymath, and seems to excel at everything he does (or perhaps, he just does a lot of different stuff). He grew up in my hometown Molde, Norway (think Solskjær), so he holds a special place for a lot of people there.
Wow amazing insight which totally share. Though now I am more into sport climbing and more focus on the grade, the best memories come from the first times and the fear and adventure associated to it. I started doing a free solo almost by accident, I thought that I could climb a slab over sea and rocks below . It was all after watching Silvester Stalone climbing movie. So the conclusion, climbing is fun but imitating Hollywood movies can bring you problems.hajaha. thanks Adam.
where are you going for christmas week? On 23rd I am going to vertikale climbing gymin in brixen, on 25th I am going to Heliks climbing gym in brunico and on 26th I am going to cube climbing gym in bozen. Are you doing to go to one of these climbing gyms on one of those days?
For most climbers pushing the personal limit is not a goal. That happens automatically within a few years of climbing. Maybe 0,5, % or less make special exercises for climbing. For most climbers the level does not matter, you climb with friends and have fun! :)
Start at 65. If you get injured, it won't matter :,) people will say, oh shit n stuff but nobody really cares about an old fart and that's your strength @@kilte90

Hey adam, great video! One of the best italian writers, Erri De Luca, is a great climber ad well, and he also has a great approch/ philosophy to climbing, you should definitely meet up with him!
The most unexpected collab of all time
I'm sure more unexpected is possible, but this is quite a way out from the well trodden path.
@@DrewNorthup yeah, o just didnt know that Nesbø went climbing. I only knew him as an author
@@lonesome3958 I had an idea, since one of the books had a pretty realistic climbing scene in it.

These are my favorite types of episodes! A little bit of climbing, a little bit of philosophy, and just some good conversation about what we all love!
He actually managed to play football in the top Norwegian league and score som pretty amazing goals before he retired quite young from knee injuries.
Adam ondra is a national treasure
whhaaaaat jo nesbo? i love his books. what a nice surprise:)
9:39 "The experience of climbing is solving it yourself." The same with life. Nice guy this Nesbø.
I love his books! Many kudos to Jo Nesbo for reaching such a high level of climbing!
A testament to "anyone can climb"! The guy starts in his 50s and progresses that quickly in 10 years!? Impressive!
In the tier list of unexpected things this is almost on tier with the Spanish inquisition. And I do like it!
So nice
And Jo has the same challenge as a lot of of us with this age
Climbing a 8a, the 9c of our youth
Very inspired from this fellow oldtimer!
Agreed that's such amazing inspiration, I hope I'm pushing my grade at his age!!

Great episode! Great to learn about how Jo approaches climbing, what motivates him. Loved to hear that story!
Brilliant and wholesome. Amazing insights.

A big boys dream has come true. Enjoyed it very much!
The view from the top was absolutely stunning!
I can totally relate to staying up in the night thinking about a route and how to do the moves, but I think that happens to most climbers.
Such a nice video! Very well edited material, good sound capture, the bad part is that it ends.
I enjoyed your video and the interview. People ask me why I climb. I think you have explained it perfectly in this video. Thank you.
By far the closest I’ve seen someone else come to expressing my exact relationship with climbing
Another great video, thanks for making these.
