      Adam puts out content that is about the passion for the sport and the experience instead of just for the difficulty. He can do a video about the history and experience of what is an “easy” route purely because he loves all aspects of climbing

    Most climbers don't achieve that grade in their whole life. From the ones who do, most of them have to spend entire seasons training on the same route. For Adam it took a couple of minutes.

    Off Topic: Hello Adamn and Community. I am no climber myself but i love watching the on or other climbing channel. I have a question regarding tournaments. It seems like, that the most popular climbing contest is the speed climbing oder climbing for time. As someone with no further background i have to say that is not fun to watch at all and it doesnt do justice to "real" climbing skill. this is at least how i feel. so why arent there trournaments for distance? make one obsticle harder than the one before and see who got more endurance and basicly set up problems until its not solvable for anyone any more. if two people climb the same distance you can still count the time. I think competetive wise climbing has SO much to offer but it feels like the competitions are very specialised and limited in case of creativity. More a text than a question sorry. Would like to know what actual climber thinka bout this :)

    What knot is that Adam tied in with? It does not look like a typical figure 8.

  • @tensecondsplit5471
    @tensecondsplit5471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I keep seeing climbers switch to bowline variations for tying in, and I wonder if it is just a trend, or if there is a big advantage (other than untying) to using it instead of figure 8

    • @CoNFiiDeNTiiAL
      @CoNFiiDeNTiiAL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What more of an advantage do you need than it being easy to untie? As long as its secure and you trust your knot, untying speed is the only way to improve a knot

    • @tensecondsplit5471
      @tensecondsplit5471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CoNFiiDeNTiiAL if it has an increased mbs over another knot I would say thats way more important than fucking untying speed

    • @CoNFiiDeNTiiAL
      @CoNFiiDeNTiiAL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tensecondsplit5471 yeah no shit, hence why I mentioned the knot has to be secure and you must trust it. Almost every knot derates your rope to 75% of its MBS, the bowline and figure 8 are no exception.
      I've literally never heard of a case where a rope snapped on a climber because a bowline was used instead of the "normal" figure 8. The figure 8 is just taught to beginners because its easy to tie and have a partner check over.

    • @tensecondsplit5471
      @tensecondsplit5471 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CoNFiiDeNTiiAL nobody thinks a rope will snap because of using a bowline instead of a figure 8. If anything it would slip because the bowline wasn't followed through or backed up and slack is introduced. Ive never had a problem untying a proper figure 8 even after a whip, so I don't feel any need to use a bowline. To me there's more cons than pros, so I was wondering why some people are switching away from figure 8

    • @CoNFiiDeNTiiAL
      @CoNFiiDeNTiiAL 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tensecondsplit5471 then why bring up MBS in the first place... Like I said again, if the knot is SECURE(properly tied and backed up) and the climber trusts it. All that matters is how easy it is to untie after whipping. I know for a fact that a bowline will be dead simple to unlock with pumped forearms and a big whip. The figure 8 will naturally bind on itself making it objectively harder to untie

      Looks like some kind of bowline. I’m actually curious what finish Adam uses, as well. Doesn’t look like a yosemite or any of the others I’m familiar with. Almost looked like a simple bowline with a barrel knot on the running end. Hard to tell if he does anything further with the tail there.

    • @andrefivethousand
      @andrefivethousand 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@milhollandandrew yea. I use a bowline then follow it back through - you essentially end up with a bowline on a bight. Surprised he’d have so much tail left after tying in.

    • @miguelgazquez5717
      @miguelgazquez5717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@majkelb3057 The downside of the bowline is that it's easy to not spot your error if you mess up, while with a figure 8 it's hard to put yourself in danger : even if you mess up the resulting knot will probably hold. On a bowline the knot can just slip.
      The real advantage of the bowline is that it's a lot easier to untie if you fall a lot (even if a well dressed figure 8 is not that hard to untie either).

He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. I've always wondered how or who puts the quickdraws up on these hard routes? Are they ones just left in the bolts, does the filming crew rap down and put them in or does another climber climb up and put them in ahead of Adam going for the onsight?

    • @sepposepisto
      @sepposepisto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looks like it would be difficult to rappel down through the bushes and along the diagonal line. On the other hand, he doesn't collect the quickdraws in the end. Maybe they are there permanently?

    • @AdamOndra
      @AdamOndra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In many of the hardest routes, the quickdraws are fixed. Or somebody is projecting it long-term and leaves the quickdraws there for a long time. This was the case of Solitary Souls. A few times, I asked my film crew or a friend to put the quickdraws for me (usually just rappelling down the neighboring route), but in some cases I wanted to go as pure as possible - onsighting while clipping my quickdraws off the harness. I have done routes up to 8c+ in this style.

  • @andreamasotti2593
    @andreamasotti2593 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    But while climbing, what passes through your mind? I mean, thoughts are as rational, verbally shaped and meaningful as you express them in the comment, or rather you feel youy have to go you feel you can rest, you feel kneebar is not worth trying, and so on? It's more thinking, or more feeling?

    • @AdamOndra
      @AdamOndra  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is all about the feeling. I try to be as rational as possible before and after climbing, but while I am climbing, everything has to be automatic. I don’t think in words or sentences, I just climb. It is more of an intuition that is performing the moves. But the software (= the rationale information before an onsight try) is already somehow recorded into the intuition.

    • @andreamasotti2593

      @@AdamOndra that's amazing, that's an inspiration, that's something we'd all want to try and practice and someday, somehow, somewhere, maybe not so many times but at least a few, remarkable times, experience: setting the foundations of the climb with our rational mind, and then let it all go and take the shape it should, one movement at a time, sewing the path of our flow. As an onsight attempt, always wonder how much time Adam must have spent at the crag reading the route from below, thinking about it and waiting for the perfect conditions? Or was it really the case of “driving to the crag one day, looking up for 10 minutes and sending it”? ;)

      It seems like it was more the former, with a lot of time reading the route from below and waiting for the right conditions. He even mentions studying pictures of the route. Just no beta!

    Incredible to watch, that looked fantastic and how amazing that you still had the margin to even WANT to continue when there were no more moves left.
    Shows just how much you enjoy your craft.

    Still wanted to continue, but there were no real holds... That pretty much sums Adams strength up.

    Do they pre-clip all the quickdraws top to bottom, like, rappelling? Or do they clip them bottom to top like using an extender and then ascending the rope? I wonder the same on every video ahahah

    • @crimpchimp
      @crimpchimp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the hard routes of a crag you’ll sometimes find quickdraws because people are regularly projecting the routes and just leave them hanging.

      @@crimpchimp it's more because on overhanging stuff is difficoult to remove quickdraw from the anchor point, in the video the route traverse a lot, so it will be difficoult to remove them
