I have this camera since last February and it's quite good for the price. Some issues though: - If you connect an external microphone you cannot use external power as they use the same port. - As the thing is waterproof, the compartments for battery and power are extremely hard to open. - The remote is a super good idea BUT you need to reactivate it with the screen menu each time you turn the camera on. I stopped using it the first day (on motorbike) as it didn't make sense. - Finally, it has a tendency not to record even you hear the bip sound after pressing the button. Had this already 2 or 3 times, missed some good shots, and I was pissed .... So better make sure that it's really shooting before leaving for your trip. Besides that, great quality of image, stabilization is very good.
such a thorough, insightful review that addresses my main concerns shopping for a budget cam. You've convinced me to get the x1 instead of s3 or Brave 7.
I just ordered this camera yesterday. It seemed like a good option, I’m learning camera ins and outs. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your opinion. If possible a future video on how to use it in a canoe setting would be absolutely appreciated!!! Thanks again✌️
Hey Open Air Outdoors, thanks for watching. As far as canoe mounting goes, I did a segment a few years back featuring the Scotty mount system. This might be of interest to you: th-cam.com/video/3Chvz5d7stY/w-d-xo.html
Thanks very much. The XTU X1 is definitely a great camera. I am really impressed with it’s performance and this is one action camera I have no hesitation in recommending to anyone.
Thanks this is the most in-depth review on this camera 📷 I’ve seen thanks man.I’ve had this camera for four months, upgrade from my GoPro 4 . I also tested it with a longer 🎤 mic cord akaso external mic and work excellent.

This isn't really a complaint but rather an observation. It's hard to judge 4k video quality when you only upload to 1080p. Other than that, it's a great, informative video! Thanks for sharing.
Really in depth review. One question I do have has to do with focus. Does this camera have a continues auto focus or is it like many action cams in that it is a set focus. In my videos I tend to change subject often and would like to know if the focus will as well. I have been using a Fuji film XP140 which does a good job. Only thing is its a little bigger than an action cam and in low light the continues auto focus can be REALLY slow.
I honestly do not know about the focus, but I'm assuming that this is a fixed-focus lens which is pretty standard fair on these extreme wide angle lenses found on action cameras.
Hey thanks for the review. I use these alot and would be interested in having one of these...the best feature of all...the threaded 1/4-20 mount on the bottom of the camera...as little as it seems its very important to me.
I have watched a bunch of videos on this particular camera and this is head over shoulders the best. Well explained and informative demonstrations of features and picture/audio quality. Would you happen to know if a wireless mike will work with this camera? Thank you.
I do not know of any wireless mic that would work with the XTU X1 camera. This camera uses a micro USB input for the microphone. I do not know of any compatible wireless microphone units that use that type of input, most of them ate just 3.5mm audio cables connectors.
If you are using an external microphone is the housing still waterproof with the cover door open? Say for example a person had it mounted on their kayak, with the external mic and they flipped their kayak. Would the camera die if that door was open? Thanks for a great review
No, the camera is NOT waterproof if the microphone is plugged in. But this camera does pick up pretty good sound with the built-in microphone which is waterproof.
Sir, this was a great review, thank you! One question though, if you don't mind. How was the battery life generally speaking? Say I was recording 1080 video. How long would you estimate the battery would last? Thanks in advance!
Hellow sir i have some issue about my xtu cam. Evrytime i take video it will cut around 9minutes but in actual video it is ok to record how can i manage not divide the whole video record thanks😁
My understanding is the DJI Osmo is a very good camera, but I have never used one so cannot make a comparison. I have used Sony and many GoPro cameras and no, the XTI does not have as many features or the same quality at high frame rates as those cameras, But for a camera costing half as much I was really impressed with everything the XTU X1 has to offer. My review was based on the merits of the XTU camera , and it has many.
I’ve not used the DJI Osmo Action , but looking at the specifications both cameras have similar capabilities. One nice thing about the DJI is you can get ND filters for it. A great thing about the XTU camera is it will accept a plug-in microphone which the Osmo will not.
And is this a Chinese camera because they have been known to not have true 4K? Is it USB type C? Any stabilizer like Osmo DJI and Gopro? Any removable lens? Other cameras have dual screens ie DJI, Akso, Gopro etc.
XTU has Micro USB, Has 2 different EIS and Super EIS, not sure if this is interpolated, I was looking at the Campark v40 and Akaso Brave 7LE (Both very similar to this XTU. wasn't impressed with the others compared to the XTU, similar by looks, but settings were different. This was $199,99 on Amzn whe I just bought it this week 4-26,2021. My laptop doesn't do 4k so I am stuck with using 1080p 30fps :+( . Incredible amount of work he did for his reviews, GREAT JOB! * Wayne's Campark V40 Review: th-cam.com/video/izTYQvGw5bM/w-d-xo.html
Hi, would you know what other action camera accessories would fit this camera, e.g. is there a cage that would fit this ? same as the one available for the DJI.. Thank you
I have seen them listed on Amazon.com. Try typing this in the search bar: "XTU X1/S3/MAX PRO Action Camera USB Dual Charger Kits, 2 x 1350mAh Rechargeable Action Camera Battery with USB Dual Charger"
Don, yes the DJI Osmo has come down in price over the last year and I believe it is a really good camera, although I have not actually used one (yet) so cannot make a comparison. But for sure it is a very competitive market out there. For the price, the XTU, has a lot of good features and very good performance.
Well, it certainly looks the same, but having never used the Kheelad K80, I cannot say for sure. But I do know that there is a lot of ‘re-branding’ with action cameras. I.e. one company makes the camera and several other companies licence the camera and put their own name on it.
GoPro was the original action camera and they invented their own mounting system which has been adopted across the industry, so if it says “GoPro compatible”, it just means it will also work with GoPro as well as dozens of other manufacturers. The XTU comes with several “GoPro compatible” mounts. Basically, if it works with a GoPro, it will work on this camera.
Great in depth review.. its clearly way better than the latest Akaso Brave 7 (lousy audio recording) , its compatible with other external mic is an added bonus.. just the price is still on high side
Yes, this is a fine camera and I have also tested it with an Akaso V50X clip-on microphone (purchased from Amazon for 13.99 CDN) and can report that it works perfectly, even though Akaso claims it is only compatible with their camera.
Yes, all video in this review is untouched ( no colour correction, no cropping, no brightness adjustment) basically what you see is what you get. I was very impressed with the video quality from this camera, and highly recommend this XTU camera.
Nice review. Now, even though it is a bit frosty, an underwater sequence would be nice. Just kidding. Of the ones you have reviewed this seems to be the best. Let Brad use it on one of his trips. Thank you for the review.
The X1 has sold out of stock in the Amazon warehouse, therefore you can buy it from www.xtucam.com/products/xtu-x1-action-camera or choose XTU S3 action camera

The best review about this camera on TH-cam!!! Great job!!!
Thank You Amigo Peludo. I try to be thorough on all my reviews. This is definitely the best under $200 action camera I have reviewed to date.
great review!

Yes these batteries are the same size and voltage. They can be used in both cameras.

I think you can expect an hour and a bit
The battery should last up to about 90 minutes according to the manufactures spec sheet.

@@TheOneCanoe oh sorry, i comment while watch and not yet finish watching the video☺️
Excellent review thank you!!! Audio seems to be little better than Dji asmo action other than that they seem so evenly matched.
I have not had the pleasure of using a DJI camera yet, but someday I'll try to arrange a review of one.
For $200 I would assume that the DJI would be a better bang for my buck it’s more developed and more on par with GoPro what do you think?
My understanding is the DJI Osmo is a very good camera, but I have never used one so cannot make a comparison. hello, Do I need a firmware to get my mic ok, and where do I get it. Thanks for a very good review.
No firmware required, just plug the included mic into the USB port.
Hello, how do you turn on the front screen?
Just push and hold the ‘M’ button on top of the camera.
Great camera , picked one up about a week ago or so. It also has RAW photo's at 12MP.
Thanks. Good to know about the RAW photo option!
Do you think it can compare to the Dji osmo action camera?
I’ve not used the DJI Osmo Action , but looking at the specifications both cameras have similar capabilities. One nice thing about the DJI is you can get ND filters for it. A great thing about the XTU camera is it will accept a plug-in microphone which the Osmo will not.
