Pontiac 400 Rebuild Continues! Post Cam Break In Inspection!

- Well this tale just refuses to end with our customers 400 Pontiac powered 1979 Pontiac Trans Am however it seems like we MIGHT be on the good side finally! After eating the first Comp Cams flat tappet camshaft on break in, we blew the motor back apart and assessed where we were and how bad the damage was. A whole lot of cleaning, reconditioning the heads, all new gaskets and bearings, and we were ready to go for round 2 of the break in. So, today we found out how that went!
On a lot of automotive youtube channels you'll find folks just throwing things together with used parts, or pouring a little automatic transmission fluid down a cylinder and trying the whole Will it run thing. That's not us, if it's going to be a vehicle that have our name on we have to make sure it's right, like really right. Not good enough. Right. As one of the premiere independent automotive shops in the Ohio region we take pride in what we do and the work we turn out.

Great job don't think cam failure wasn't your fault cam manufacturer's where having issues with metallurgy you are the guy that stands behind your work and take the time to do it right because in the end your reputation means everything have a MERRY CHRISTMAS

Dude. Put a bearing in it and ship it. I know where you’re coming from. It’s not gonna go south. Not even if you leave it like that. But! I’d still put a bearing on it. My OCD approves what I just said. But if you want to take it all apart. You gotta follow your own OCD! I’m just sorry you’re having so much grief. These old Pontiacs can be difficult. That’s why not everyone runs them. But those who do, Win! Merry Christmas! 😅

Fought mine for 2 years to get it semi-leak free (still puts down a drop now and again) and to get it tuned and running its best. Who knew it would require 30° of initial advance to make its magic? 😂

CC XE262 cams have been killing Pontiacs for generations. Lunati fan here.
I'm getting ready to swap out the XE262 in my 455 with a Summit 2802. It's been 4 years of headache since I put that cam in... hopefully everything else goes well! I'll never buy a Comp cam or lifter ever again.
I know Rich this build has been a pain in the posterior.Know why you’re double checking everything. Because don’t want go backwards no more. That murphy’s law is a bitch. Just a little metal shavings from the lifter and cam shaft. Amazing that happened. Sounds really quiet now.Merry Christmas to you Rich🎄🎁

SO, My question IF your willing to respond is,
Did you add ZDDP 'additive' to the oil when you initially fired the engine 1st time??

I've never messed with a Pontiac V8. Are dual springs normal for a stock hydraulic cam? Seems excessive to me.
so whats the status on the little capri?
I don’t understand why you wouldn’t tell the customer roller cam or you’re not doing it? All the extra labour the customer SHOULD be paying for would total MORE than the added cost of a roller cam versus a flat tappet.
And it makes zero sense for you to be absorbing all the cost of the hours of labour.
I would have given the customer the option, flat tappet cam and if it fails, all the extra labour and basically a full rebuild is his tab.
Or put a roller cam in from the start with virtually nothing to worry about.
Meticulous Pontiac
