I’ve done a bunch of 8.8’s, mostly in the explorer with independent rear suspension, and the majority of them were always .027-.028”. That’s using the ford oem setup tools. We have gauge blocks that bolt in place of the ring and pinion and you use the pinion shims to check the pinion depth. So easy.

I’m surprised you’re using a crush sleeve and not a solid spacer with shims to get desired preload. The crush sleeve tend to lose preload under high stress.
I have long ago went away from crush sleeves and went to a solid adjustable pinion and carrier spacers, makes for longer wear on bearings and maintains pattern better on my cars. No more crush sleeve to collapse and eat a gear set when you least need it. You will be surprised how far the pattern will move on the ring gear by adding load ( i use a prybar against the ring gear and upper housing) as i spin the pinion with a ratchet.

I recently acquired a 95 5.0 mustang and the rear ended was howling. So I went in to check it and found out who ever put the 4:10’s in it didn’t need to be working on cars lol. Over .020” backlash, no preload on the pinion or carrier bearings, so I made some adjustments and found the carrier bearings trashed, went ahead and made the adjustments to see if it would shut up. Nope. Just made the noise change at different speeds. Lucky I had a set of 4:10’s I kept out of a ranger that were in good shape and bought a install kit. Replaced all the bearings and noticed the clutches were loose, took them apart and found carrier shims stacked in the clutch pack that were all chewed up. Car did have a weird squeak to it sometimes, lol. Omg some people shouldn’t be able to even purchase tools. Luckily the clutches were only 45$ through my dealership. Tommy should have put new tires on the car while you had the rear dropped. 🤣🤣 Oh well, he'll probably have to lay on the floor now to get it done.
What brand of Ring and Pinion are you installing Rich?
This one is actually a Jegs brand one believe it or not. Exactly the same set that was in it for the entire 2022 season since "the explosion"
You don't use a solid crush sleeve? Just wondering, I've always used the regular crush sleeve but thought about going to the solid one next time.
No Sir just a regular Ole crush sleeve, and it was just fine after hundreds of crazy Billy and Tommy passes. Everyone has their opinions though 😀
You set it up just fine. If you think it's going to have the tolerances that you set after 80-100 passes, you must be having a momentary lapse.. lol

The bolt in axles.... Is that a c-clip eliminator kit or has the housing been modified?
Yes indeed

Why do you use a crush sleeve over a solid shim set up?
I've set up a lot of rear end gears. My rear end whines when it is not pulling or not holding back. That little spot in between. Do you have any thoughts on that. I don't see anything wrong.
Q.i have shims behind the race when setting pinion up is that the .030 you are talking about
I watch a guy beside me put in the inner pinion race in backwards one day
Nice. What rear gear ratio?
im a big fan of that bearing puller but you should get some race drivers makes life easier .
What brand of gear set do you recommend for a 1500 Ram truck ZF style for durability and low noise?
