    I had a JB4 on my N55 335i, using both 93 and also a 60/40 E85 mix using the Flex Fuel addon. It made a massive difference, wheelspin in 3rd gear on a bone dry surface and pulled like a champ. Ran it for 3 years and never had a single issue. Never went crazy with the tuning so it was perfect for me.

    Ran the JB4 for nearly 3 years and zero DT1 or warranty issues. Didn’t even really hide mine well at all and no tech even asked me about it. So at least in my Mk7 GLI no problems. However now that I’m out of warranty and running a flash tune I have to admit they are way better.

    Usually you need more octane to make better power on the higher maps... Blending in some E85 does wonders on JB4. Piggybacks cannot modify ignition timing. You run into a situation where ignition timing is over advanced for the actual boost level. You need more octane to combat timing pull.

A few notes, the USB cable can also interface with the app on your phone by using an OTG cable with compatible phones. Great review.. Normally a splash of E85 such as 4-5 gallons is recommended for map 5 for that much boost and fueling. The HP and torque numbers would be dramatically higher. Would love to see another vid with a custom map with higher octane and/or E blend. Also 1/4 mile run with the JB4 for comparison. Great explanation and install👍

      @knightrider1545 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But doesn't piggyback cause the engine to only allow boost with high octane or running methanol injection? So therefore it ramps up fuel pump and therefore it can become where your 5 gallon tank of methanol is depleted in 30mins in your small engine turbo vehicle but you only hit half throttle in those 30mins?

    • @JeffTrop
      @JeffTrop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@knightrider1545 The 5 gallons mixes with the 91 or 93 and raises the overall octane level. The ethanol burns cooler as it's alcohol based. You don't burn through that 5 gallons separately, this has been used for years in tuning. There are many E85 calculators available online for reference. JB4 has logging capability so it can be analyzed how the E-blend is affecting fuel trims and AFR'S. Then you can make a custom map accordingly or just add power to the OTS maps as they will auto-tune for it.

      @@catinthehat5140 Not even close. The JB4 data cable is currently $40 (I bought it when it was $30), and any USB OTG adapter on Amazon costs $10 or less. I had a JB1 on our MK7 Golf R for years and was always happy with it, especially given the cost. I recently moved from the JB1 to a 93 octane 034Motorsport tune and while it's a night and day difference, the full ECU/TCU tune was significantly more expensive.
    The JB4 on the other hand, the prices are much closer to the costs of full ECU tunes. But, at least in the case of my B9.5 SQ5, the power increases aren't that far off from full ECU tunes.

    • @vroomgc

      I had the exact same thing as you and when I upgraded to a Stage 1+ and also had the TCU tuned and it was a noticeable difference. I understand why OEMs like VW lock down the ECU so well (warranty,emissions,EPA,CARB 😔), but can’t they just open up the ECU for the end user and allow aftermarket users to get a remap/tune?
    We’re constantly in this dance where tuners are cracking the ECU locks and validations and then months, sometimes years go by and then finally tunes are available.
    This is a decent stop gap in tandem of stock calibration; it’s a cool way to get quick power and safely with warranty. Yes there’s ways to detect this but the effort to go through would be almost moot. Just take it off before going to the dealer and you’re safe.
    Great Video! Wish I got to make a way out to Lindsay VW when you picked it up!

    Stacking is good for more than just WMI or trying to override a tune for the same fuel with even more boost. You can use it to buy a lower octane tune if say you only have 91 available normally, but can find 93 or e85 sometimes too, dial in some Map 6 settings for each and save them as profiles to use to make your tune far more flexible.. It also doesn't override ECU safeties, it takes a LOT to blow your engine that way! LOL... Love ya Paul, you are a great asset to the community!

    Based on historic VW trends, get a new clutch ready. The tissue paper they call a clutch disc is already inadequate at stock power levels. The dyno results show that the turbo is already at its max with the 1st tune used. Past that point all you may see is a low RPM boost spike. After that just blowing jot air and losing turbo efficiency.

    So I finally was able to test drive a GTI S manual. I liked a ton about it other than two things. The tech interface and just adjusting the hvac, radio, etc was a pain. You need a tutorial before you try to do this and drive. The other is it felt like the computer was reducing boost in 1st and 2nd gears. It didn’t feel like a gear ratio thing to me as when I shifted to 3rd or 4th at whatever rpm, the boost hit almost immediately. I prefer the mk7’s dash design, but things change and I don’t buy used cars anymore. Is there a handheld tuner coming? That might dramatically help 1st and 2nd gears.

    • @DanielBrownOre
      @DanielBrownOre 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boost reduction to help prevent wheel spin totally makes sense, the JB4 also offers this in its settings as well... but yeah, if you don't like it most likely will have to wait for a real ECU flash tune that eliminates this.... Also, the S at least has a volume and tuner knob, that does help quite a bit but indeed there is a learning curve and becoming accustomed to the controls, I can see that being frustrating at first!

    Did you connect the AFR wire? My understanding is this is how it monitors and manages the fuel bias. Without tapping the AFR, you aren’t allowing the piggyback access to any of the information that separates the JB1 from the JB4 and it defaults to the lower boost levels for the other maps since it is missing information. This may also explain why there wasn't more power difference between the maps. Just a thought....

    • @stephenromano6311
      @stephenromano6311 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not needed on the mk8, that varies by car

      @mikerinehart1369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Stephen Romano Oh, OK, didnt know that. I just know on the MK7.5 it makes a big difference without the afr wire connected.

    • @DanielBrownOre
      @DanielBrownOre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you don't install the AFR wire on MK7 it does NOT default to lower boost levels at all, it just can't add fuel to keep up with extra boost and you will run lean if you push it too hard. For instance, I tried Maps 1-3 without the AFR wire on my MK7 1.8 and once on Map 3 I could see my AFR's creeping up a little, I had perfect AFR's under Maps 1-2. Then, once I got the right connector and hooked up the AFR wire, my fuel trims went up as it added fuel and my AFR's went more rich and I went on to dial in Map 6 from there.
