Back in the 60s I played guitar in my stepdad Norm's honky-tonk bluegrass band. There was some idiot drunk who'd show up and pick fights with people and call them outside where he and his friends would maim the guy for fun. One day he tried it with my step-dad. He didn't even get the full invitation out before Norm slammed him with a mike stand and then used it to pound two of the guy's accomplices into the floor. It was over quick, Norm put the mike back on the stand and told a cheering crowd, "No need to go outside when right here right now will do just fine."
John Carpenter would say that Piper arrived with notes and his own ideas. He gave suggestions and they went with a number of them. He understood the film and all the physical stuff well he did perfectly. Always thought he should have more action films, but he did it well.

Carpenter always went for low key naturalistic acting. That way the more over the top parts are easier to accept. If you have people acting in a 'movie' way then it breaks the immersion.

Something similar happened to me once, I was walking to the gym and out of nowhere a guy who was coming in front of me pushed me and almost made me fall, I turned to face him and he did the same, when he turned I realized right away that he put his hand in a pocket in which I'm sure he had a knife or some weapon, we began to argue and the guy told me that if I didn't like the push we should go fight in the park that was across the street that was deserted, I told him no, if he wanted to fight we should do it where we were, at that moment several people began to arrive to see what was happening, when the people arrived the guy took his hand out of his pocket and continued as if nothing had happened, After he left, an old man who saw everything that happened told me that I did the right thing in not going to fight with the guy in the park because the obvious thing was that the guy had stabbed me or something worse.
