I do find Wyll's original story potentially more interesting, but I get why they changed it. EA Wyll was Machiavellian at times. He seemed to perform heroic actions out of a desire for prestige more than a desire to do good, was constantly bragging about himself, and most of his actions were self-serving either to himself or his image as the great hero. That explains why he was such a terrible Flaming Fist and why he was willing to torture a man for information in the goblin camp when nobody was watching, but laid on the big hero persona thickly while around the tieflings and the party at the start of the game. Even his pact with Mizora was made for selfish reasons, not out of a desire to help anyone. The developers wanted there to be some good-aligned companions in the game for variety, but "good" doesn't have to mean morally perfect. I feel like the developers could have struck a balance between the two versions where he retained some of his Machiavellian characteristics without outright being Machiavelli's prince. Then again, given that launch gave us an unambiguously good-aligned companion in Karlach, the developers changed Gale's personality to make him less manipulative (there's still a little bit of manipulation at the beginning when wants you to give him magic items, but in EA he was manipulative in practically everything he did, including getting the PC to sleep with him), and they slightly tweaked Lae'zel's personality to make her less hostile, I'm not even sure that would have been necessary. Old Wyll would have worked in this group without making it feel like you were surrounded by nothing but jerks.
Honestly I think early on Gale is just true neutral - he's not evil but his concerns are pretty self-centred. With Wyll I think his EA personality would have been too similar to some of the other ones. I think the main issue is that he doesn't choose his own fate later on (with regards to the second contract). And his sidequest has almost nothing to do with him personally.
@@spectralassassin6030 I suppose that I must be more critical then. Gale is an overprivileged smartass, who will do anything to get what he wants, and thinks he is gorgeous. Wyll is a goody 2 shoes, who made a pact with a devil just to impress daddy. Why or how Karlach can find any redeeming features in him is beyond me. But she is such a naieve sweetheart, I suppose that is the reason.
@@loadishstone There's a big difference between someone who's pretty much straightforwardly an asshole like Lae'zel or Astarion, or is an otherwise normal person stuck in a cult like Shadowheart, and someone who talks a big game about being a hero while not living up to their own standard, i.e. hypocrisy.
@@loadishstone To be fair, treatment towards Wyll hasn't been any better regardless. Its just that now people can't be vitriolic because he's an asshole so they just constantly write him off as boring
@GlitchyPixExtra its always like that though. Even in the Mass Effect series Jacob (black guy) is the most hated companion even though other companions also had flaws some worse than others. That whole not sleeping thing is also why Priestess Gut just throws a Bitch Fit and starts Initiative when you drink the Potion of Sleep while playing as a Half-Elf/Elf Tav.
The way I "read" the Shadowheart Selunite scripture thing was that it needs to be said out loud for it to open and Shadowheart refuses to do that. But that's just my take.
Half elves don't trance, just full elves (which includes Drow). You can see Shadowheart in your video not doing it while you're talking about it and she's a half elf. Fun vid tho!
I was so confused when I had a teddy bear named Clive in my inventory. I kept it with me at all times because I assumed it was a quest item I randomly picked up before getting the quest. I must have accidentally taken it from Karlach when I talked to her.
Karlach's Rage Scream, specifically the second one you showed, gives me chills EVERY TIME I hear it. Samantha Béart is amazing and I love every bit of her as Karlach.
In Rivington there's also a second broken cart with cabbages but with nobody around. So it looks like the cabbage vendor has just as much bad luck as in the series.
@@CCrittsIt was probably changed because of cutscenes of tav/durge/astarion being woken up, they would have to make seperate cutscenes for the meditating characters just to make it look right.
1:30 Honestly I'm one of the people who liked his original storyline better. It was interesting, and added a lot of good complexity to his character. He wasn't simply a nice (if a little bland) guy who made a poorly considered deal with a devil, he was a more fleshed out, complex person who wanted to be a hero but struggled with his overwhelming desire for revenge. Imho dealing with internal struggles like that just offers more for a character than making a bad decision. Though, maybe that's a result of changing his character and story so significantly so late in development.
And Wylls stance on Goblins in early access really gave you an incentive to bring him along to the goblin camp, for some cool interactions. In release i didnt find so many interactions with him and the goblins unfortunately.
@@CCritts Yeah, those scenes cemented him as my second pick for both the EA Act 1 party and romance. Slowly revealing that he wasn't as close to his ideal of being a hero as he'd like, and actually standing up to the player character even if you successfully persuade him to leave the goblins alone? Amazing. Yes please, I like my companions complicated, thorny, and opinionated. Theorising about where his story would go and what his relationship with Mizora was supposed to be was fun, even with Astarion being my first pick for everything it was Wyll's arc that I had the most interest in. I stopped playing early access and blocked news about BG3 (before the rewrite happened) to avoid the kind of early access fatigue I can get with some games, so finding out about it through not seeing any of those scenes on release day *sucked.* He went from one of my favourites to a background character in his own questline. Even if they add more to him in the future, he's not the same character I was interested in and I'm still salty about that.
I was so excited for Wyll's ''Hero's Journey''! A guy who calls himself a hero but at the same time does not commit good acts only out of pure heart but also of the desire to be viewed as a hero. Really realistic and complex approach. People do this in real life too. We do something good but deep inside we just want to get praised for doing something good. Really wanted him to eventually learn what it means to become a TRUE HERO. Also his ''pride'' and accent in EA made me like him even more. He was really ''posh'' in my opinion.
A wizard barbarian is lowkey terrifying. Imagine thinking you have disarmed a wizard by taking his focus or reagent pouch for him to just rage and beat you to a pulp.
i actually changed astarion to barb fighter (was still learning to play couldn't figure out rogue) and i found it made sense as he got progressively angrier towards cazador the stronger we got
I could be wrong, but I think I noticed that the specific barbarian scream each character uses also depends on which specific subclass they are. I notice that when Karlach had a different scream when I played her as a Berserker versus Wild Heart build.
I don’t think is his story that’s the problem, it’s the voice acting. Compared to everyone else in your camp, they add emotions to their dialogue which makes them a more enjoyable character to listen to, it feels like Wylls voice actor is just reading the script. Throughout his story, his voice doesn’t change. No matter the circumstances his in. He’ll give some emotion here and there but then he reverts back to just reading his script.
@@loadishstone I don’t think it was the dialogue that was bad. His dialogue was excellent. I just never felt like he wasn’t behind it. The love in portraying Wyll was non existent. When I listened to his dialogue, I felt like I was reading it out loud.
I have another one for you: In Baldurs Gate (the city) there is a woman not far from the undercity. She hums the „Outlander“-Song „Skye Boat song“ saying, it sticks in her head. And I thing she wears Clairs clothes from the episode where Clair goes from town to town in mans-cloths to sing and find missing jamie. I love all these eastereggs so much!
Karlach has of course great barbarian screams, but a nice surprise was Astarion. And man, the Monk interaction with the cabbage guy, hahhahahahaahahaha
I am sure part of the reason I am not bothered by Wyll's drastic rewrite is because I intentionally avoided playing early access for the past 3 and a half years, despite keeping my eye on it the entire time, but quite frankly there's enough edgy acerbic morally grey characters in the story and especially the party, we needed an unambiguously heroic "goody two shoes" type, the fact that he's a fiend pact Warlock makes that fact even more interesting
I'm very glad they changed Karlach's original design. It's far more believable that the golden retriever looks like that tank of a barbarian after 10 years fighting in the Hells, rather than a small gal with no visible scars or alterations.
Unique barbarian screams but even better imo is each actor recorded the insults for bard's vicious mockery. My first playthrough was with a rogue so made Astarion a bard.
the info on how BG3 changed from EA to Full Release is quite interesting. you could definitely cover how the dream visitor is implied to be your tadpole in EA, whereas in the full release it's something else entirely
I've always been conflicted about Wyll's characterization change. In general I prefer more morally ambiguous and flawd characters, but the party as a whole in early access leaned heavily on ambiguous (understandable since they were all playable and could make "good/evil" choices), so having a more classical hero archetype made the party feel more balanced.
I would be more interested in Wyll if he’s actually trying to be a good person but struggles instead of being purely a good person who sacrifices himself.
Man EA wyll is far more interesting than current Wyll. I honestly found him the least interesting to the point I killed him on my first run when he ambushed Karlach and me at night. Thought he was just another one of Karlach’s pursuers considering how the “paladins of tyr” ended up.
7:23 Honestly What first came to mind was Sheogorath from the Elder Scrolls Series since he is often depicted with Grey Hair, a beard, and wearing purple. But yeah I guess Geralt probably makes more sense given the location.
Wow, I've seen so many BG3 videos but the facts presented here are completely new and surprising, especially rage screams! The amount of details in the game is just mind-blowing!
Hey! I found another one! In the act 3, when you visit a cemetry, on one of the graves there is going to be written "Open the bloody gate!!!" Which obviously refers to Aradin as a joke😅
funfact about the trancing in BG3, during the EA, the elven characters (tav and astarion) would sit cross-legged on their bedrolls with their hands doing the typical trance pose. idk why they changed that for launch when the cross-legged animation was cool.
Oh my god I didn't even know original wyll had a different backstory. From just a few words that he said the original version feels so much more compelling.
i was one of the guys who wrote Larian Studios and litereally bagged to not only make Karlach a companion but also to make her look more unique, badass (and sexy). and just look how glorious she looks now. just GREAT! was so happy when i saw her new look and then she is not only a companion but also one if a great personality too!
Im one of the few who really doesn't care for full release Karlach's appearance change. I installed the mod that reverts her back to her early access face because I like it so much more
The individual Barbarian screams are cool. I find it even cooler that each character also has their own recordings of spell incantations, including dozens of "Vicious Mockery" insults (including NPCs. Aunty Ethel even has her own custom insults!). I also like that your spellcasting animation is different depending on the class you're playing, since the different casters draw their power from different sources. And your weapon attack animations and climbing animations depend on your race. Elves are more graceful then humans. Halflings and Gnomes are shorter so they have to adapt to the larger ledges and weapons.
The only reason why I like new Wyll better is because every single time EA Wyll talked I wanted to throw him off a cliff, while he was inside a chest, in pieces and on fire.
Ty for the cabbage one! I never found it and I love avatar! I remember recording the original episodes on vhs haha! Definitely will have to look out for him on my next run!
Dude thats a tradgedy that wyll got changed like that. I think its way more interesting that he isnt perfect and hes capable of being evil. And the fact that he had a connection to the goblins is really cool. He got shafted so hard
I had no idea about any of this, and Wyll hit me the hardest. Goddamn that would've been an interesting character. Wyll's such a good boy. To have deeper inner demons he must face as the story progresses would add so much depth to his character. That, and maybe I'm still just a bit miffed by how EASILY Wyll's beef with his father is resolved. Like, "oh, you mean I just had the wrong idea the whole time? i'm sorry, you were right, carry on saving the world," the end. Uuuuughaglsdhg.
If I remember correctly, they did want Wyll to always be the heroic archetype. The only problem is that his tendencies are so dark upon introduction that too many people thought he's incapable of true heroism. The Wyll we have now is someone I consider a true paragon. But I do miss Wyll from Early Access. He was someone I deem an insecure human and there's so many interactions with him so early in the game that it's easy to find him endearing. However, I do get the impression that his heroism was, for lack of a better word, "bullshit" from how he speaks and acts parallel to you. He was someone who would embrace the Illithid powers. In fact, I find it so cool that you get an interaction where everyone in the party confronts Wyll for using Illithid powers. Not your decision, but his. You also get dialogues to say about his carelessness and eagerness to do something reckless. That, I think, makes sense for someone who would unkowingly become a Warlock.
Should've shown the Rage roars from the non-Origin companions. Minsc's roar in particular is very badass. But holy shit I had no fucking idea Geezer Loryss had a different reaction if your character is a monk, to reference Aang.
The people whining about Wyll's rewrite are so weird. The one saying that there's "no depth to his character"... I honestly don't even know what to say. It's hard to fix that kind of stupid. I think part of it is because people seem to have wanted him to be their flawed little guy who relentlessly fucks up and, despite a noble law abiding background, lacks any prominent code or morals.
That's the thing though, for all that heroic bs Wyll spouts, he most certainly doesn't leave camp if you're Bhaalspawn or partially illithid. Even going so far as to seriously consider, no he straight up says "you right, if I am gonna fight these dudes, might as well utilize this power I have" letting you know he is cool with the illithid thing happening to him, but the pact is what is worrying him? it's more like this dude is gullible as hell and super short sighted, that's what I always hated about Wyll as a char. Like everyone has keen insights into shit BUT the dude with a Devil on his shoulder. Idk that's just how it felt for me when he full released. I kept him in my party in EA and was quite let down on release. All while parading around like he's still Mr Blade of the Frontiers. Also he looks dumb as fuck as a Tiefling but I guess that was just an extra haha from Mizora or at least that's what I tell myself. It's another reason I kind of hated Halsin, for being overly goody but at least Halsin is a straight up GOOD druid, and it makes sense. Not pretending to be good, he's just a solidly good guy out to help the land, also with great insight into the shadow curse and druidic shit in general. Even his WORST protege Kag is genuinely hurt if Halsin dies and she was a bitch. If Wyll dies we just tossing his body in the Travellers Chest bro 😢.
@@LaztheLax Idk why you think he should run if you're a Bhaalspawn, there are good Bhaalspawn including the reknowned hero of Baldurs Gate, Abdel Adrian. Why would he run if you become part Illithid, you've almost exactly done what he did when he accepted his pact: Agreed to sacrifice himself for the good of others. His pact only worries him insofar as it has the potential to harm others, and ostensibly he doesn't want to spend eternity in Hell but it's what he expects at this point. Idk if you just weren't paying attention during cutscenes, Wyll being turned into a tiefling is explictly a punishment. Duh doy ofc he's not going to be as hot. Bringing up Halsin just indicates that you're weird about explicitly good characters. It's ok to not like it when a character isn't a morally ambivalent bad boy, but literally just say that instead of claiming that characters you don't like are poorly written.
Astarion was a teifling during development, so he did change dramatically, which would make more sense as to why your party couldnt realize he was vampire right away as teiflings have fangs and colored eyes, so it would have been much more of a surprise.
Half-elves actually do not go into the trance, that’s exclusively an elf/drow thing, even in game. Another cool fact about the trance is that it allows them to near-perfectly recall any memory they have while in their trance. Like they’re tidying up their “mind palace” Edit: accidentally said “elves” instead of “half-elves”

Oh yeah. I remember playing the ea and thinking, "God, these people are awful." I'm glad they changed most of them.
I still think that both Gale and Wyll are self serving jerks, and try not to take them along, if practical.
@@Jules_Diplopia Not really. Not anymore at least. Gale is more neutral good and Wyll is straight up good.
Really wish Wyll would have stayed so flawed. Would have been a great challenge to get him to calm down and not be so angry
Difference between Wyll and Jacob is what you said. Since they cant call Wyll an asshole they just call him boring. Mass Effect developers kept his asshole traits (like other companions) and people just clung to that as the reason they didnt likr Jacob
@@GlitchyPixExtra Wyll is my "canon" play through. I play him as a prideful arrogant guy who is in it for the fame. Then he starts to become a real hero
@@pakman5391I mean you do you but that’s just straight up wrong for his character just knowing his lore from before the game starts immediately disproves that, not to mention leaving your group if you destroy the grove also disproves that he’s 100% just a good person and in the companion group it’s nice to have at least one just straight up good option there’s literally nothing wrong with that.
That whole not sleeping thing is also why Priestess Gut just throws a Bitch Fit and starts Initiative when you drink the Potion of Sleep while playing as a Half-Elf/Elf Tav.
Wow never occured to me that interaction. Good spotting
The way I "read" the Shadowheart Selunite scripture thing was that it needs to be said out loud for it to open and Shadowheart refuses to do that. But that's just my take.
thats exactly what I thought too!
Everyone: AAAAAA
Gale: aaaaa
Half elves don't trance, just full elves (which includes Drow). You can see Shadowheart in your video not doing it while you're talking about it and she's a half elf. Fun vid tho!
Half-elf player characters do actually trance - at least, mine does. But you are right that in the lore, they don't actually trance.
youre right, my character in that video was an elf, and when i made a half elve he didnt do the pose. Good looking out
@@CCritts That's odd. My half-elf does do it.
@@Resi1ience im a dumbass i had a drow lol
My Half elf also does it but maybe they have to be Wood half elfs
I was so confused when I had a teddy bear named Clive in my inventory. I kept it with me at all times because I assumed it was a quest item I randomly picked up before getting the quest. I must have accidentally taken it from Karlach when I talked to her.
I took it by mistake and spent a few good minutes to put it back where it was because Karlack needs her teddy bear.
Hard to imagine Wyll believing that Duke Ravenguard can't actually spell :P
that's actually a great point, wow.
Wyll with a Y and without an “i” 😂 (yes I did laugh at my own bad pun)
Karlach's Rage Scream, specifically the second one you showed, gives me chills EVERY TIME I hear it. Samantha Béart is amazing and I love every bit of her as Karlach.
In Rivington there's also a second broken cart with cabbages but with nobody around. So it looks like the cabbage vendor has just as much bad luck as in the series.
to add to the elf trance fact. in Early Acess elves used to meditate on top of their bedrolls when the sleeping cutscene played
damn that sounds alot cooler actually
@@CCrittsIt was probably changed because of cutscenes of tav/durge/astarion being woken up, they would have to make seperate cutscenes for the meditating characters just to make it look right.
When Astarion sleeps hes slightly hovering over the bed roll. So it looks like its still there unless you mean something else?
@@LadyAbstract in early acess elves straight up did the meditation pose instead of laying down
Gale is soooo angry he switches his staff to the other hand

Honestly I'm one of the people who liked his original storyline better.
@@CCritts
Yeah, those scenes cemented him as my second pick for both the EA Act 1 party and romance.
Karlach's EA model was essentially a placeholder as the tall female bodytype (along with her unique looks) wasnt added to EA from the getgo
i actually changed astarion to barb fighter (was still learning to play couldn't figure out rogue) and i found it made sense as he got progressively angrier towards cazador the stronger we got
I love how the animation of the game release knew that astarion was perfect
Gale rage screaming was the cutest thing in this vid
I could be wrong, but I think I noticed that the specific barbarian scream each character uses also depends on which specific subclass they are. I notice that when Karlach had a different scream when I played her as a Berserker versus Wild Heart build.
interesting, i might test this out
I wonder if the early access story of Wyll would have been more interesting than the one we got in the final version to be perfectly honest.
@@ervinsobased4055 Could it be both? cause I never felt that there was anything remarkable about either
@@loadishstone I don’t think it was the dialogue that was bad. His dialogue was excellent. I just never felt like he wasn’t behind it. The love in portraying Wyll was non existent. When I listened to his dialogue, I felt like I was reading it out loud.
1:51 Old Wyll seemed like a faker to me. I was actually pleasantly surprised when he turned out to be genuine.
Where do you find this?
@@geekygatorette near the House of Grief I suppose
Karlach has of course great barbarian screams, but a nice surprise was Astarion.
And man, the Monk interaction with the cabbage guy, hahhahahahaahahaha
Am I the only one who wises they kept Wyll the way he was? He's the blandest companion for me..
She did start out as a bodyguard, so she probably was muscular even before Zariel.
I definitely would NOT have piped Karlach if she looked the way she did in early access. Mama K had a SERIOUS glow up
Unique barbarian screams but even better imo is each actor recorded the insults for bard's vicious mockery. My first playthrough was with a rogue so made Astarion a bard.
I can be Aang not just the four elements Monk , but they recognize I have carnage man lol
You gotta feel bad for Cabbage Man. Omashu, Ba Sing-Se, and now Baldur’s Gate. Poor guy can’t catch a break.
the info on how BG3 changed from EA to Full Release is quite interesting. you could definitely cover how the dream visitor is implied to be your tadpole in EA, whereas in the full release it's something else entirely
There's a mod that restores Karlach's early access head updated with cool datamined scars. I absolutely love it.
"Astarion is one of the companions who got changed the least."
*Smash cut to when Astarion was a Tiefling.*
I'd love to see more videos like this. I was never around for Early Access so its interesting to see what's changed
The rat stick omfg I love it’s always sunny 😂
You should see the video it's always sunny in baldur's gate then, it's hilarious
Edit: my bad it's called Frank Reynolds in baldur's gate
Gale needing to be rescued in his intro instead of successfully portalling himself like in EA fits his character being a screw up
I would be more interested in Wyll if he’s actually trying to be a good person but struggles instead of being purely a good person who sacrifices himself.
I find it funny how elves and half elves can meditate instead of sleep, but shadowheart just sleeps lol
Only elves, not half-elves. Shadowheart is the latter. Astarion, who's a full elf, meditates.
Halsin also does the meditation pose like Astarion, but half-elves like Jaheira and Shadowheart just sleep as they are half human.
@@elenalizabeth So full blooded elves and Tav half elves can do the pose gotcha
My Tav half-elf just sleeps normally
Man EA wyll is far more interesting than current Wyll. I honestly found him the least interesting to the point I killed him on my first run when he ambushed Karlach and me at night. Thought he was just another one of Karlach’s pursuers considering how the “paladins of tyr” ended up.
The cabbage man having extra dialogue if you’re a monk is now my favorite video game easter egg of all time 😂
7:23 Honestly What first came to mind was Sheogorath from the Elder Scrolls Series since he is often depicted with Grey Hair, a beard, and wearing purple. But yeah I guess Geralt probably makes more sense given the location.
Wow, I've seen so many BG3 videos but the facts presented here are completely new and surprising, especially rage screams! The amount of details in the game is just mind-blowing!
the 2020 showing with Shadowheart has softer lighting and actually looks better than the lighting we got.
Hey! I found another one! In the act 3, when you visit a cemetry, on one of the graves there is going to be written "Open the bloody gate!!!" Which obviously refers to Aradin as a joke😅
SMH we were robbed of wyll’s back story
The barbarian screams are great.
Gales is hilarious (obivously), but Halsin's is *awesome*; like, probably the best one in the game
funfact about the trancing in BG3, during the EA, the elven characters (tav and astarion) would sit cross-legged on their bedrolls with their hands doing the typical trance pose. idk why they changed that for launch when the cross-legged animation was cool.
Glad they changed Karlach. She now actually looks like she can wield a great weapon with ease.
I didn't know they would be sweating in the hot areas. That's pretty interesting all the stuff they have put in this game.
In act 2 you can find a letter in the shadow cursed lands signed by Dandelion
Funny enough, my first playthrough was a Monk, and I met the cabbage guy. I was dying of laughter the whole time, it was a BEAUTIFUL reference
Every new thing I learn about Karlach just cements my belief that we would be Best Friends.
Gale sounds like he's trying to be polite, and Astarion sounds like he's playing with his young neices and nephews. Thats just funny as hell to me.
gale's rage scream sounds exactly like he stubbed his toe or suffered a very minor inconvenience
I really like the original Karlach visual. Wish they had kept that.
I love how Astarions EA outfit circled back for his epilogue get up.
Very calming, interesting video. Loved it
I completely forgot about Wyll’s eye 😂
You made me feel so sorry for the cabbage guy. I just want to help him fix his cabbage wagon ; _ ;
All of that was interesting but specifically thanks for explaining the sleep positions.
Astarion was a teifling during development, so he did change dramatically, which would make more sense as to why your party couldnt realize he was vampire right away as teiflings have fangs and colored eyes, so it would have been much more of a surprise.
Actually the sleeping fact was very useful, I was wondering why my buff, mustached half-elf cleric was sleeping like a precious princess lmao
This is amazing ♡
The karlach one toom me by suprise i gotta say that shocked me
1:00 he was already perfekt :')
gales scream gives “Rawr :3”
Half-elves actually do not go into the trance, that’s exclusively an elf/drow thing, even in game.
Another cool fact about the trance is that it allows them to near-perfectly recall any memory they have while in their trance. Like they’re tidying up their “mind palace”
Edit: accidentally said “elves” instead of “half-elves”
Shadowheart rage scream is adorable
One of the Gale screams is like "aaaaayyyee-yaaaaa" and is even way more ridiculous than the "ah!" 🤣
Astarion turns into a warhammer Strigoi with those barbarian screams.
