I dont need the brake controller, just the 12v battery power to trailer battery. Just need to run the wire like you did on the video? And need to install the circuit breaker also?
Are there any advantages to running the wiring through the cabin alongside other wire looms, vrs running it outside? It seems like it should be run inside the cabin...
It's a lot easier and quicker to simply run that 12V feed under the vehicle on the passenger side up to the battery. You can run it through the passenger cabin, but you'll need to remove the threshold plates under the passenger side doors and some of the trim on the B pillar and the kick panel. You might also need to drill a hole through the firewall if one isn't available. If you're worried about the wire being damaged under the vehicle, you can always use a length of wire loom like # 7509-1, which is sold by the foot. www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Spectro/7509-1.html www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/etrailer/ETBC7L.html
Outback 2021, For 12V power source, can I tap into the factory T- connector red wire with a fuse?. I used the voltmeter to check the power from this red wire it has 12v while the car is off.
I'm assuming you're wanting to install a 7-way trailer connector, right? You'll want to run a separate line to the positive battery that's protected by a 40 amp circuit breaker. If you use the # ETBC7 kit, it includes all the wire, circuit breakers and hardware as well as the adapter that converts a 4-pole trailer connector to a 7-way. If you already have a 7-way or the 4-pole to 7-way adapter, use # 5506. www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/etrailer/ETBC7.html www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/etrailer/5506.html
The 12V outlet in the rear of the vehicle is not fused to support the power demand of a braking system and trailer lights. This is why running the power wire being run to the battery is the best option. www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/etrailer/ETBC7L.html
I have a 2022 outback and I want to tow a small camper. I do not need brake controller but need the 7 pin for charging the battery in the camper. Which kit do I need? My outback already has factory tow hitch and 4 pin plug from factory.
We'd recommend the # ETBC7L. It'll provide all the functions of a 7-way, except the output circuit for trailer brakes, which you won't need. www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/etrailer/ETBC7L.html
It would be a better install to feed those wires along the factory harness inside the car. It would also be good to pull the other 2 wires to fully use the 7 wire harness. Last and most importantly the power wire to the trailer plug needs an isolation relay to only allow it to power the trailer with the engine running. This simply needs an ignition switched source to control it.
With the curt wireless controller - does that mean you do not need to connect the brake control wire from the car to the 7 pin connector? I will be towing a trailer with electric brakes.
You're correct. If you're using the Curt # C51180 Echo, you won't need a brake output circuit. The # ETBC7L doesn't provide an output circuit, so it'll work very well for you. Why do you not use the yellow or the blue wire here? Would this setup still provide power for trailers that charge on board batteries while the vehicle is running?
The yellow wire is for the reverse light signal and the blue wire is for the brake signal. This vehicle was not towing a trailer that needed either. It just needs to pull a trailer with an onboard battery. www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/etrailer/ETBC7L.html

I'm curious, is it possible to get the 12v source from the lighter outlet in the back of the wagon?
Thanks for your videos, so helpful.

So, if I have the curt echo then I don’t need to do all these steps?
@etrailer
@@JarSac1 For the Echo, the brake pin on the 7-way doesn't need to be active, just the 12V feed.

@@etrailer awesome, thank you - is it typical that if a trailer has its own brakes it would have its own onboard break lights anyway?
For running the wire from the breaker to the battery, did you use the same 12 gauge wire?
Yes the 12 gauge wire was used to run from the breaker to the battery.
