  • Here I'm opening a French survival ration from 1996. What a cool and fun ration to get to see and open. This particular ration set me back about $30 US. So I hope you all enjoyed checking this one out as much as I did. I really enjoy finding these cool hard to find things and even the everyday things and sharing them with you.

      oldsmokey great work as usual man, although I would have used sugar from my sugar bowl for the coffee. I think it's fine to use your own stuff in a review to substitute something that comes in the ration anyway to avoid opening a component like those sugar cubes. Because thumbs up to France for probably the coolest sugar packaging I've ever seen

      The ones they have now are no where near as cool. I have one and it's just in clear plastic. I have a different one from the same time period in a really cool ss steal container. I'll review it some time as well. I might do it the same time add the new clear plastic one.

    I've used this ration a lot when I was in the french army in the 90's. What you have in your ration are definitely the Maggi broth cubes. The 25g Pemmican cube was much bigger and came in a silver wrapper. As usual in the army, the same denomination was used in the content list for Pemmican and broth, so that you couldn't make any difference...

  • @sarjim4381
    @sarjim4381 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice review, Smokey. Given the size of the can, I'd rather have that one for bailing out than most American or British emergency rations. Having some hot soup and coffee is a great moral booster. The pemmican on its own isn't too good but it's tolerable if it's dissolved in hot water. Pemmican has always been survival food because of its lasting qualities, but most people wouldn't eat it unless they were really hungry. I'm surprised French sugar wrappers would have a US PT-17 and P-51 Mustang on it rather than French aircraft. Maybe it's part of a series with US aircraft on the wrapper.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sar Jim
      Yea the planes were definitely a treat on the sugar cubes. As far as the pemican goes its edible but not tasty. I'm going to try to get a couple cans from WW2 hopefully. If I can afford it that is. I'd really like to check that out for you guys and see if it's held up or not. Thanks for watching and commenting. Later.

    • @sarjim4381
      @sarjim4381 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pemmican raw always tastes pretty nasty because the real stuff is almost 100% fat. The only reason it lasted as a survival food was the amount of calories contained in a small package. It's been around since at least the the fur trader days of the 1700's and probably earlier with the natives. From what I've read, it was almost always prepared with flour, salt, and whatever wild vegetables like onions, carrots, and potatoes could be found. It was supposedly not bad when made this way. Give it a try ff you run across some of the WWII variety that are still edible.

    Awesome review. Liked and subscribed. Another shortcoming to the ration is that you have three things to heat, possibly more if you space out the pemmican, but they only supplied one Esbit tablet.

    I can't believe you just tried to eat the Maggie haha. These are bouillon tablets, they need 500ml of hot water. These things are very common in France, we boil our pasta, rice etc. in it.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Sherrifs Forge
      I think that Maggie made the pemican for this because the list and the bouillon was definitely separate from this. I actually did some research after the last comment and it is indeed pemican not bouillon the company Maggie made this pemican for the survival rations back in the 90s. Also just wanted to mention that it's very soft and it's not very strong flavored like bouillon is. I've had bouillon probably 1,000 times literally I used blocks all the time in my soups and noodles etc. But hey thanks for watching and hope you come back and watch more.

      They aren't really bullion there actually different. They have oils and fats that are just in the pemican. They taste very odd but I can see how they would get you by in an emergency situation. Even though I put very little water it still didn't have much flavor. If I were to halft to eat these I would eat them dry I think.

      If you read the contents list those were produced by the Maggie company for this ration, and they are not bouillion they are in fact pemican produced just for this ration. I'm not stupid I know exactly what buillion tastes like and that stuff was miles from buillion. I've had to many people tell me those weren't pemican so I did some research like I said though Maggie produced the pemican just for these types of survival rations. I have another one that's a different style with the pemican also.

      Yeah me to. I'm curious because it wasn't what I expected. There's 100 different ways to make it from what I've seen. I've had about 4 French people tell me it wasn't pemican but it most definitely was. It is listed right on the contents list and the manufacturer Maggie produces bullion as well. But they made the pemican for this ration 20 years ago. That's interesting you make your own. What's it like?

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Allison Lewis Good pemmican is 50/50 kidney fat and meat, from what I hear. It can't be subcutaneous fat, because it goes rancid too quickly.

    • @msmurder81
      @msmurder81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaybird196 yeah pemmican is lovely. I have made it for years for camping and hunting

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Allison Lewis That, and custom hardtack, would be my ideal survival food base :) . If the tallow comes from grass fed cattle, it has all your vitamins (if the meat is authentically been dried, as opposed to being cooked first, like many jerkies).

    • @msmurder81
      @msmurder81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaybird196 I don't make hard tack as I don't eat any grain. I do use a lot of the fat I gather from when I go hog hunting :) venison makes delicious pemmican as well with fat supplemented from hogs and with some dried blueberries

    Hi Bro. I think you got it backwards: those little gold "Maggi" bricks are actually bouillon (broth), NOT Pemican. That's why it tasted like @$$ - it's like biting a pure bouillon cube. The pemican is actually those "Commando" bars. (link to Maggi bouillon: www.hashems.com/store/soups-and-broth/maggi-halal-chicken-bouillon-cubes-1

      I know the brand. It's in a grocery store that I frequently visit. But that being said I did my research on this because so many people telling me I was wrong. Maggie produced small batches of the pemican for the French militaries numerous different types of survival, abandoned ship, and lifeboat rations. Steve1989 reviewed a similar type ration that I sent to him. He also will tell you that it is pemican.

      @@Oldsmokey1 ok, maybe, just maybe you're right, but as a french, we all thought about this :
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouillon_cube
      the cube in the picture, you put it in water, never eat it raw. (well.. like a bouillon).
      I never heard of Pemican from Maggi.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perfect Blue
      Well there's another thing that should be a dead giveaway for you being french. Look at the contents list. The packet had the beef bullion in it and the 4 gold wrapped blocks were pemican blocks that can be eaten raw or reconstituted in hot water. Per the contents list and instructions. Either way I've had tons of bullion on and those gold blocks were no bullion that was some pemican that was probably really, really stale plus the fats and stuff in it have changed over time I'm sure. I actually take what I do seriously and if I make a mistake I'll be the first to admit it but in this case I'm not wrong. I do understand that Maggie makes bouillon that looks very much packaged the same but the contents of the Golden wrappers was Pemican blocks in this rartion.
