4900 Men killed or drowned 4800 wounded 753 lost aircraft. Very accurate of what occurred in Okinawa. My grandpa was on an LCVP during the landings. It must have been really terrifying and heartbreaking for him to bring troops to shore and return with the wounded. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 99 years old. He was such a remarkable man the rock of our family. Everyone adored him. Forever miss him. Those who fought in WW2 were a different breed of men. RIP.
Did he suffer PTSD? There's no shame in it, although the WW2 generation generally thought so. Saw it in my own father, and his brothers who were in Europe as well. The help our veteran's should have received, often they did not. I will not describe any incidents, but he was a tormented soul for the rest of his days. Ones I could relate would chill the blood, trust me. I did not see him happy very often. Once he told me more of what he saw, late in his life, I understood him much better -- something which many of you whose father's, or Grandfather's served in WW2 can relate to, I am certain.
That generation sacrificed everything to free the world from tyranny. Tyranny is now inside the United States. There are people who hate this country and want to destroy our civil rights such as freedom of speech (don't worry, they just want to "regulate" "hate speech"), the right to defend oneself, etc. They are the same politicians who need that every President start a new war to keep the weapons factories profitable. They were able to get rid of the one President who refused to play their game and was working instead on bringing soldiers back home.
The fact that this movie is based on true events makes it even better. I never would’ve believed the story if it didn’t have the survivors at the end. Truly incredible.

My great grandfather was a corpsman in the marines and was at Iwo Jima. He never talked about it but those who knew him that he came back an angry and hateful person. It wasn't until I got older and heard about what all the other veterans of the pacific saw and dealt with that I became more sympathetic to him. His humanity was stolen from him and could no longer see the good in the world.

And to think Desmond was suffering from undagnosed tuberculosis that he got on one of the other islands that they were on during that action. So not only did he save of upwards to over a 100 men he did it at half capacity of his lungs. Desmond Doss was the hero of heroes.
While at the end of the movie it says Desmond saved seventy-five men by directly lowering them from the escarpment, he also treated around fifty-five more that we're able to retreat without assistance after treatment during the battle. Over the course of his tour, which lasted approximately three weeks, he rescued nearly three hundred men. I had an uncle serve in Korea, Vietnam, and the Cold War. He passed away in December 2019 and he was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, the United Nations medal, the South Korean medal, and the Cold War medal.
The official Medal of Honor citation says Doss saved 75 or more men from Hacksaw Ridge. It was actually over 100. Doss was so modest he asked that the citation say 50 men. They split the difference. Doss meant it. He accepted his Medal of Honor, but remarked that the real heroes are the ones who died on Okinawa.
Desmond was an incredibly godly man. I wish we had more like him serving and being around people today. What he did in the film was toned down but still amazing. The part where Desmond heard the call for medic and the explosions from the Battleship’s Shells are everywhere, and he understands and he starts walking towards his call. I cried and that reminds me of Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
While you were talking about the effects that you had from the previous movie. I was thinking that you will be surprised with Hacksaw Ridge. This movie is unlike any movie that I personally have ever since. I’m 43 and in my life I haven’t seen anything like this. I’m glad that you enjoyed it.😊😇
Mornin' sweetie. Hope things are well. This is a true story. Desmond is an extreme version of the military medic. My father was a navy corpsman in the pacific theater. He lost his best friend and medical teammate in a battle he was delayed arriving to while on leave getting married to my mother. He had survivors guilt for the rest of his life. As I did for saving private Ryan I wouldn't have let him see this film for the fear of what reaction it might trigger. Outstanding movie! Luv ya. Hug Montana.

I fought in iraq and to the non-combatants and those on the periphery of action, the war meant only boredom or occasional excitement, but to those who entered the meat grinder itself the war was a netherworld of horror from which escape seemed less and less likely as casualties mounted and the fighting dragged on and on. Time had no meaning, life had no meaning. The fierce struggle for survival in the abyss of iraq had eroded the veneer of civilization and made savages of us all.
Desmond Doss saved 75 men at the battle of Okinawa. He received the Medal of Honor (our nation's highest military honor), and is the only conscientious objector to receive that medal. He lived to be 87 years old.
ICYMI: The actor who played the soldier who lost both legs is a veteran of Afghanistan, where he really did lose both legs to an IED ("Improvised Explosive Device"). I find that sobering. He really really knew what it felt like.
It's a pretty good movie. In reality a lot of things were kind of compressed down. Doss did see fighting before Hacksaw. He did fight in Guam and the Philippines. He was wounded 4 times in Okinawa.. A lot of the family drama was also kind of made for the movie as well. Basically the movie is a very compressed version of things he did in the war.
Pvt Doss was the 1st & only service member to receive the CMH- Congressional Medal of Honor as a known conscious objector for refusing to fire a weapon to end someone's life. Plus the training base at the time was called Camp Jackson but was later renamed Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina which is still in operation today as a Basic Training installation & is also has the Army Drill Instructor School for new Drill Instructor's & also Chaplain School. My son graduated from Basic Training there in 2014 with the 2nd Battalion 13th Infantry Regiment Echo Company 4th Platoon "Executioners"
FYI, the battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest of the whole Pacific war. 240,931 are listed among the dead, including over 77 thousand Japanese and 14 thousand Americans. Most of the dead were Okinawan civilians, nearly 150 thousand.
Something that the movie left out was that they were attacked by a tank when carrying doss and doss saw a more injured man and crawled off the stretcher and refused to get back on until the more injury man was down safely
As an avid WW2 history enthusiast i can confirm every movie like this hits an extra layer deeper when you know the history behind it, even little things like the Japanese mentality that most people would miss or not know make it so much worse

It might interest you to know that Doss was actually suffering from tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ( he later lost a lung to it ) so he had to do his best not to cough and give away their position. Also due to army food Doss was v limited to what he could eat as he was vegetarian so he was surviving on crackers and water so he was incredibly weak so its even more mind blowing what he did. There is so much more to his story thst it was left out Mel Gibson said there was no way people would believe the whole story. A Truly amazing ma.

Another movie you might like is Sergeant York it is also based on a true story about a man who was a conscientious objector who fought in the first world war and ended up capture 132 German prisoners of war in one battle it also has a good love story and is much less bloody even though its still a war movie

Glad you got to this one, Irina -- I think it's one I had suggested awhile ago. My father was a med tech in the So.Pacific as well, but he was medically discharged before Okinawa. Realize the war films are tough on you. Still, one about the American Revolution you should cover at some point is 'The Patriot,' (2000). My Great x 4 Grandfather was in two of the battles recreated here - stars Mel Gibson again. Gibson is Benjamin Martin, loosely based on the real-life Francis Marion, aka the Swamp Fox. It has several rough sequences, so you might wish to wait awhile.
It might interest you to know that Desmond Doss had tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ridge ( he was diagnosed in the V.A hospital he was sent to in 1945 and lost a lung to it) so he had to stiffle his coughing so as not to give away his location while finding injured soldiers. It took nearly 9hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it another few battalions joined in the search because of what he did for them all. Desmond was already a seasoned soldier by the time of hacksaw ridge as he was deployed in the Pacific where he saved more lives for which he was awarded the bronze star. In his mitary career he saved close to 300 men. If there is one autobiography to read it is his as there is so much more to his story and a lot of what happened up on that ridge was left out as Mel Gibson said if we had put it in nobody would believe any of it as the things that happened were truly miracles. Like testimonials from Japanese soldiers who said when trying to shoot him thrir guns jammed even when they tried enemy weapons yet when checked or a shot fired in the air they worked. So many miracles its mind blowing. Desmonds father as you saw was v deccorated soldier for what he did in WW1 he was awarded the bronze star but tragically he was unable to save his best friends. Both truly good men and heroes both of them. Hugo Weaving did an amazing dipiction of PTSD absolutely amazing actor. They all did an amazing job such a hard yet beautiful movie all at the same time.
He won two Bronze Stars for heroism in battles before getting to Okinawa. His heroism on Okinawa was so extreme they took some of the things out of the movie because they did not think audiences would believe it. While he faced some scrutiny in training, they exaggerated it some.
When he passed as an old man, they needed an extra large coffin to contain this man's balls. As an American I'm so very proud and so very thankful for Desmond Doss. RIP Desmond.
Okinawa was not Desmond Doss' first campaign. He was also at Guam, and the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star in each of those battles. He was also awarded 3 Purple Hearts for being wounded three times.

I would like to see your reaction to one of the FIRST WWII TRUE STORIES, “To Hell and Back” (1955). Not only is it a true story of the MOST DECORATED soldier in WWII, but the staring role is played by Audie Murphy himself. Yes, there is a big difference in movie making styles from 1955 to the 21st century, but the story telling is just as exciting. Please try to work this true story of (and by) an American Hero into your reaction schedule.

This one is also a true story.
Have we ever given blood? I have about a dozen times. But I still remember the first time. We had a blood drive twice a year at my high-school. The first time I didn't heed instructions and went in on a stomach that was empty of everything except maybe water. When I was finished they had a table set up to eat a little and get some energy back. I sat down and one of my biggest crushes was giving food and asked what kind of Sammich I wanted............ Then I woke up on my back with her and a teacher standing over me. Passed out SO fast it's a wonder I made it to the table.
There's a great line from a song by Chilliwack called Raino. The line from the song is "If there's no audience there just ain't no show." It would have fit perfectly in your intro.

I gave blood only once...while in the army serving in korea in the 90s....the red cross had a bus and a buddy of mine and i both gave a pint. One other time i was going to....but i had been ill and they wouldnt take it.
A study done by the military during world War 2, showed that 80% or more of frontline troops never actually fired their guns with the intent of killing someone. Most fire into the air or into the ground even when faced with imminent death. This has been the case in every major conflict in history. Because as it turns out humans are extremely resistant to the idea of killing eachother even when their life is at risk.
He probably saved over 100 men on Hacksaw Ridge in actuality. That's the number the survivors and his captain calculated. He was super humble and insisted it couldn't have been more than 50. So when they submitted him for the Medal of Honor, they compromised and said it was 75 men.
The huge assault on Okinawa, 954 air miles southwest of Tokyo, began in April, 1945. The Japanese, unlike the Germans (who were much more cognizant of reality at the end) defended fanatically. It was, without doubt, the bloodiest attack of the Second World War, costing over 240,000 lives, including civilians, and soldiers on both sides. In August, the atomic bomb was used, twice, to avoid another Okinawa in an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
This movie has some pretty brutal special effects. They define the reality of a battle well. But there are some pretty absurd things. There's a soldier using half of his body as a shield. This is seriously impossible. Bullets go through the human body.
I like movies that have a true story behind them. Editing a movie for TH-cam is hard. You have the balance many things while trying to make TH-cam and your viewers happy at the same time. You did a good job with this one.))
This is a pretty inspiring story. There's another from Vietnam that they say died 37 times. And another guy in WWII that took a sword into battle. All great stories.

My father was on LSMR 190 which was hit by 3 Kamikazes and sunk. He was wounded by shrapnel in head and floating in the water for some time.
American dead at Okinawa were 4 or 5 times that,; wounded were 7 - 10 times that. Japanese casualties were over 100,000 dead.

It's not based on true events, It's literally cut down for cinema. Mr. Doss is so incredible they couldn't fit everything he did into one film.

Did you/he ever see Flags Of Our Fathers? tells the story of the flag raised at Iwo Jima, heartbreaking battle!

ICYMI: The actor who played the soldier who lost both legs is a veteran of Afghanistan, where he really did lose both legs to an IED ("Improvised Explosive Device"). I find that sobering. He really really knew what it felt like.

It's a pretty good movie. In reality a lot of things were kind of compressed down. Doss did see fighting before Hacksaw. He did fight in Guam and the Philippines. He was wounded 4 times in Okinawa.. A lot of the family drama was also kind of made for the movie as well. Basically the movie is a very compressed version of things he did in the war.
Pvt Doss was the 1st & only service member to receive the CMH- Congressional Medal of Honor as a known conscious objector for refusing to fire a weapon to end someone's life.
Plus the training base at the time was called Camp Jackson but was later renamed Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina which is still in operation today as a Basic Training installation & is also has the Army Drill Instructor School for new Drill Instructor's & also Chaplain School.
My son graduated from Basic Training there in 2014 with the 2nd Battalion 13th Infantry Regiment Echo Company 4th Platoon "Executioners"
FYI, the battle of Okinawa was the bloodiest of the whole Pacific war. 240,931 are listed among the dead, including over 77 thousand Japanese and 14 thousand Americans. Most of the dead were Okinawan civilians, nearly 150 thousand.
Something that the movie left out was that they were attacked by a tank when carrying doss and doss saw a more injured man and crawled off the stretcher and refused to get back on until the more injury man was down safely
Another film similar to this is "Flags of our Fathers," based on the real events of the battle of Iwo Jima that o cured a few months before Okinawa.
As an avid WW2 history enthusiast i can confirm every movie like this hits an extra layer deeper when you know the history behind it, even little things like the Japanese mentality that most people would miss or not know make it so much worse
I recommend you see Defiance with Liev Schreiber and Daniel Craig. I also recommend Resistance with Clemence Posey and Jesse Eisenberg.

Another good war movie based on a true story is Unbroken from 2014.
The book was better.
It might interest you to know that Doss was actually suffering from tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ( he later lost a lung to it ) so he had to do his best not to cough and give away their position. Also due to army food Doss was v limited to what he could eat as he was vegetarian so he was surviving on crackers and water so he was incredibly weak so its even more mind blowing what he did. There is so much more to his story thst it was left out Mel Gibson said there was no way people would believe the whole story. A Truly amazing ma.
Corporal Doss was a devout Seventh-Day Adventist. He volunteered, but would not carry a weapon in combat.

Another movie you might like is Sergeant York it is also based on a true story about a man who was a conscientious objector who fought in the first world war and ended up capture 132 German prisoners of war in one battle it also has a good love story and is much less bloody even though its still a war movie

My father was a med tech in the So.Pacific as well, but he was medically discharged before Okinawa.
Realize the war films are tough on you. Still, one about the American Revolution you should cover at some point is 'The Patriot,' (2000). My Great x 4 Grandfather was in two of the battles recreated here - stars Mel Gibson again. Gibson is Benjamin Martin, loosely based on the real-life Francis Marion, aka the Swamp Fox. It has several rough sequences, so you might wish to wait awhile.
This was about world war 2. And I think the benito joke was about benito mussolini the dictator of Italy.
So sad, and I'm sorry for the Russian people who lost far more lives than anyone else in WW2 I pray a war of this magnitude never happens again.

This movie actually downplayed his aid within the war. He actually saved more than 75 wounded. Still amazing nonetheless!
It might interest you to know that Desmond Doss had tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ridge ( he was diagnosed in the V.A hospital he was sent to in 1945 and lost a lung to it) so he had to stiffle his coughing so as not to give away his location while finding injured soldiers. It took nearly 9hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it another few battalions joined in the search because of what he did for them all. Desmond was already a seasoned soldier by the time of hacksaw ridge as he was deployed in the Pacific where he saved more lives for which he was awarded the bronze star. In his mitary career he saved close to 300 men. If there is one autobiography to read it is his as there is so much more to his story and a lot of what happened up on that ridge was left out as Mel Gibson said if we had put it in nobody would believe any of it as the things that happened were truly miracles. Like testimonials from Japanese soldiers who said when trying to shoot him thrir guns jammed even when they tried enemy weapons yet when checked or a shot fired in the air they worked. So many miracles its mind blowing.
Desmonds father as you saw was v deccorated soldier for what he did in WW1 he was awarded the bronze star but tragically he was unable to save his best friends. Both truly good men and heroes both of them.
Hugo Weaving did an amazing dipiction of PTSD absolutely amazing actor. They all did an amazing job such a hard yet beautiful movie all at the same time.
He won two Bronze Stars for heroism in battles before getting to Okinawa. His heroism on Okinawa was so extreme they took some of the things out of the movie because they did not think audiences would believe it.
While he faced some scrutiny in training, they exaggerated it some.
When he passed as an old man, they needed an extra large coffin to contain this man's balls. As an American I'm so very proud and so very thankful for Desmond Doss. RIP Desmond.
Okinawa was not Desmond Doss' first campaign. He was also at Guam, and the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star in each of those battles. He was also awarded 3 Purple Hearts for being wounded three times.

Actually Okinawa was his third campaign. Having already served with distinction on Guam and the Philippines.
With all the interest lately in WWII movies; “Saving Private Ryan”, “Hacksaw Ridge”, “Band of Brothers” etc... I would like to see your reaction to one of the FIRST WWII TRUE STORIES, “To Hell and Back” (1955). Not only is it a true story of the MOST DECORATED soldier in WWII, but the staring role is played by Audie Murphy himself. Yes, there is a big difference in movie making styles from 1955 to the 21st century, but the story telling is just as exciting.
Please try to work this true story of (and by) an American Hero into your reaction schedule.

I have about a dozen times. But I still remember the first time.
We had a blood drive twice a year at my high-school. The first time I didn't heed instructions and went in on a stomach that was empty of everything except maybe water. When I was finished they had a table set up to eat a little and get some energy back. I sat down and one of my biggest crushes was giving food and asked what kind of Sammich I wanted............
Then I woke up on my back with her and a teacher standing over me. Passed out SO fast it's a wonder I made it to the table.

I gave blood only once...while in the army serving in korea in the 90s....the red cross had a bus and a buddy of mine and i both gave a pint. One other time i was going to....but i had been ill and they wouldnt take it.
A study done by the military during world War 2, showed that 80% or more of frontline troops never actually fired their guns with the intent of killing someone. Most fire into the air or into the ground even when faced with imminent death. This has been the case in every major conflict in history. Because as it turns out humans are extremely resistant to the idea of killing eachother even when their life is at risk.

Flame flowers was one of the worst weapons used during ww2. Sometimes it worked out bad for the ones carrying them too.

Hacksaw Ridge is a great Movie.
He probably saved over 100 men on Hacksaw Ridge in actuality. That's the number the survivors and his captain calculated. He was super humble and insisted it couldn't have been more than 50. So when they submitted him for the Medal of Honor, they compromised and said it was 75 men.

The huge assault on Okinawa, 954 air miles southwest of Tokyo, began in April, 1945. The Japanese, unlike the Germans (who were much more cognizant of reality at the end) defended fanatically. It was, without doubt, the bloodiest attack of the Second World War, costing over 240,000 lives, including civilians, and soldiers on both sides. In August, the atomic bomb was used, twice, to avoid another Okinawa in an invasion of the Japanese home islands.
My great grandfather was a member of guerilla in the Philippines that operated in the mountainous regions of Luzon island in the Philippines.
This movie has some pretty brutal special effects. They define the reality of a battle well.
But there are some pretty absurd things. There's a soldier using half of his body as a shield. This is seriously impossible. Bullets go through the human body.
12 hours. Desmond Doss was alone on Hacksaw saving lives for 12 hours. That's practically one person every 10 minutes for half a day.
Only with GOD, can a nation stand against evil.
Best part about this movie is that it's based upon real historical events that occured during WW2

This is a pretty inspiring story. There's another from Vietnam that they say died 37 times. And another guy in WWII that took a sword into battle. All great stories.

Oh hambuger hill is another one, thin red line, men of the yamato( otoko tachi no yamato), platoon, Red badge of courage I think was a movie, We where soldiers, Knights tail lol ok not realy but worth a watch lol. unbreakable I think is the same actor as well.
