There is a great documentary about Desmond Doss. It is where the producer and director got the interviews and testimonials at the end of this film. Bottom line: This film does NOT come close to the hell the Army put Desmond through nor does it even touch Desmond's true acts of heroism.
One little detail in the film that I love is when Doss, who says over and over again that he won't touch a rifle, doesn't hesitate to pick one up and use it as a tool to create a stretcher for the Sergeant. He made that promise to himself that he wouldn't touch one, but when it came down to it, he wasn't stuck on the technicality of that promise, it was the spirit of the promise, and that meant using a rifle as a tool to save a life.
In real life, Desmond Doss used a rifle stock a splint for his leg. There are reports that he broke the rifle in order to make it non-functional as a weapon while others say he searched for a broken rifle stock. The entire story is crazier in real life
I always loved the part where he says an injured Japanese soldier. To him, it didn't matter the race or what side he was on. He was there to save lives.
That's the scene that always gets my eyes wet. It's the moment when the wounded Japanese soldier realizes that this guy is actually there to help him. Masterful directing from Mel Gibson. 💖
They didn't even show all that he did. Some of his heroic acts were so outstanding, they didn't think people would believe them. Desmond Doss is truly a great American Hero!!!!!!
I was in the Navy Seabees. We went through a basic rescue course as part of our training. That knot he tied, the "bra" is still taught to this day as it is the best way to support the body weight without risking cutting off circulation in a situation like the one in the movie.
In some significant ways, this excellent true story of Desmond Doss was toned down to make it more believable. However, there are some things that were changed that you might want to know about. Doss and his unit had actually taken part in two previous Pacific island invasions before they got to Okinawa, and Doss had actually been decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor twice in the second battle, so Desmond was already a well respected member of the unit before Hacksaw Ridge. You can understand why they decided to compress the story entirely to the Okinawa campaign to keep the story easier to understand. Some of the other changes they made are also understandable, such as they amped up the drama of the trial a lot, and the situation where he leaves his wife at the altar while he sits in a cell is not quite the way that happened. The website History vs Hollywood article on this movie is pretty good, and covers most the of the stuff that they changed or were mistaken about. I strongly recommend checking out History vs Hollywood for after you watch movies based on real history. They are usually the best place to get solid information about historical inaccuracies in a very easy to understand format, when they have an article posted about the film in question.👍

@@LukeLovesRose I try not to do that...his movies are compelling, dramatic, and incredibly made, and I try to always say that when I comment on films like Braveheart, The Patriot, and Apocalypto. Then I politely point out how far they divert from the real history, maybe give an example or two, and try to include some kind of a source where folks can start to do their own research.💯
@@iKvetch558 I think the most unbelievable part of the Patriot was having a southern farmer be that close to black workers/slaves during that time but I guess that farmer is supposed to be an exception. Accurate portrayal of the British officers though, many were like what they showed.

Desmond's father brought up Belleau Woods, which prompted the secretary to talk to the General. The Battle of Belleau Woods was the first major battle of the US forces in WWI. The father wears the Silver Star, the third-highest military combat decoration awarded for valor and heroism over a brief period, such as a battle lasting one or two days. Between referencing the Battle and his Silver Star, the secretary knew he was a brave soldier who deserved respect and help from her.
My favorite part of the movie is when Desmond is all by himself at the top of the ridge and is praying and says “I can’t hear You.” And then you hear a wounded soldier crying out and then Desmond realizes that God is speaking to him through the wounded men on the ground and responds by going out there to save them. To me, the sound of God’s commands to help his fellow man is so powerful in that scene.
Chills, every time I see that scene. It's the exact inverse of the parable where a man who prays for help, but because he's stuck in his ways, he's unable to see how God answered his prayers in so many different ways. Instead, here, Doss actively prays AND LISTENS. He doesn't expect God to talk to him directly. He just says "give me a sign". "MEDIC!" "Alright."
The fact that this movie is watered down cause people wouldnt have believed the real story if it was presented the way it happened says alot. Doss said he saves 50 lads, his teammates and officers insisted it was more than 100, the official number was declared 75, thats how admirable and respectful that man was.

Right!? We were mesmerized by his performance in this. All the emotions he was able to provide in that dinner scene amongst other moments in the film. He absolutely deserved some recognition!
Hugo Weaving's performance was indeed amazing! He should have gotten more accolades, but he was Nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role by the Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Awards and was the Winner of Best Supporting Actor by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.
It’s a shame that of the thousands in the academy. Most of them have no concept of what a quality war film looks like. There’s also the FACT that many will never vote awards for certain classes of people, most notably, any professed practicing Christian, pro lifer, or no vaccine, no globalist critic has minimal chance of any positive recognition.
Hugo is a phenomenal actor, with incredible range. I first saw him in _the interview,_ having no idea who, or even what I was watching. I was captivated by the actor, and his story - a movie I usually would have switched off
The part where Desmond on the Edge of the Ridge and asked the Lord, what is it what he wants him to do? Desmond heard words Medic someone was calling for Medic. Desmond knew what his Lord wanted him to do. Desmond got his Helmet and going into the explosions from the artillery shells from the Battleships. When he was going into the explosions it reminded me a verse. Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
This movie always reminds me of my great grandfather who fought in WWII. He was crossing a minefield to try to help a friend and ended up getting his leg blown off. All while his wife was waiting for him back home. The courage of these soldiers was amazing.
That's why they're called the greatest generation for a reason. They were all true heroes, as I'm not sure if we'll ever see this amount of truly brave heroes like this again. I have nothing but heartbreak and absolute respect for these men who sacrificed so much for the free world.
Excellent reaction and synopsis of the movie. The real story is even more extraordinary. The greatest miracle of all is the fact that Doss actually survived the war. He participated in 3 bloody battle of which Okinawa was is last. Prior to Okinawa, Doss saw action in the Philippines and before that on Guam. He earned a bronze for courage, going to wounded soldiers while bullets were flying all around him. On one occasion he disobeyed orders to stay put and went out to save fallen Americans. Even after he was wounded and was waiting to be evaluated he crawled off his stretcher to give aid to others. You probably saw his picture with his arm in a cast. While injured himself and giving aid to others, a bullet struck him in the arm. He gave his stretcher to another and wound up crawling several hundred yards to the aid station. The movie basically compresses events into a 2 hr. movie. To tell the real story, you'd have to make a 10 hr.+ film. Desmond's real story begs the question, "Was Desmond just lucky or was God just with him." The fact that Desmond was a vegetarian and therefore did not have the long lasting energy of protein nor did he ever eat a full meal and still had the strength and energy to do what he did (75 men X 150 lbs./man = 11,250lbs). Desmond carried, dragged, and assisted walking 11,250 pounds then lowered from a cliff, all while lacking proper nutrition and suffering from tuberculosis. Yes, in 1946 he was diagnosed as contracting the disease during the war and had one lung and several ribs removed. Was Desmond just ver lucky or was Devine Providence at work? A Japanese soldier that survived Okinawa said that 3 times he had the only American medic in his sights for an easy shot and 3 times his rifle failed to fire. After his third attempt he stopped trying to shoot the medic because he figured the Gods did not want this man to die. Good luck or Devine Intervention?

Fun Fact: When he was lowering all those people down, he had such bad rope burn he scraped nearly all of his skin off on his hands, you could visibly see the bones in his hands.
Mel Gibson is a spectacular director and filmmaker. If his name is attached as director, you can be assured, it will be a good movie. Braveheart was probably his best film ever, but he does a great job. Thanks for sharing the reaction and Desmond Doss is definitely a hero as this told the story of a unique man in a difficult era coming out of the great depression and WW2 for America. This film is one of my favorites! Check out The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise, if you have not already. It was definitely epic and moving like Hacksaw Ridge.

The actual story of Desmond Doss was actually way more crazy He was actually in the military from 1943 to 1945. He had seen combat in about three different places I believe and hacksaw ridge was won the last ones he did The amount of courage, and the faith he had in God is amazing. He allegedly saved 75 men but the captain at that time said he saved over 100 men, Doss was trying to be modest and said he only saved about 50 but they came to a compromise and said 75.
You two HAVE to do Band of Brothers! If you like Saving Private Ryan and this, then you will absolutely love that limited series. It’s nice to have a filmmaker’s perspective to notice the things my family and friends always call me weird about. As a vet, I’d love to help collaborate or provide some military context for why certain things are there or the meaning behind things. Great content!
A fantastic movie, especially because it is taken from real life. Kudos to Mel Gibson for showing the horror of war so well while also showcasing the human elements so clearly. “We Were Soldiers” is another Gibson film crafted in the same gritty, heart-rending, yet human way - I hope you will react to it soon !

As a Marine who spent half of my career on Okinawa, we did the battle tour at least once a year. Hacksaw, kakazu, and half moon ridges were terrifying to imagine fighting up. they are barren desolate places with no cover.
This was a very powerful film to me, I mean sometimes after watching a movie you feel happy, or sad, or scared, or just simply entertained, but after watching this one, I just felt one simple but meaningful thing, I felt the need to be a better human being
1:53 p.m....This story was SO POWERFUL and I felt the same way! After watching this and seeing how faithful Mr Doss was in his convictions, and his faith in God, and how he continued to honor the Sabbath while he was in the army....and also him standing firm in his belief in God, drawing strength from Him! And the love he showed for EVERY human being truly encouraged me to do so much better in my walk with Jesus!!! And the way he kept saying, "Just one more God....". That ended up being my favorite phrase, and request when I pray!💖🙏.
The wounded japanese soldier scene really put the impression of "These are not soldiers fighting, these are leaders fighting and using soldiers as pawns."

You are right. It was his faith. It enabled him to put his mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being in the hands of his Lord, knowing that He would show him the way. Outstanding reaction to an outstanding movie by Mel Gibson. Now, you must see Gibson’s Apocalypto. You won’t forget it.
Excellent reaction guys. This is my all time favourite movie. People talk highly of SPR, but this for me is head and shoulders above it. The real story. The acting. The editing. The score. And I've seen this maybe 15/20 times and numerous reactions. And I think I've wept every time I've seen it. The emotion, the intensity just everything about it.
Great reaction you two. The real story of Desmond is even more than this as he actually was saving people with 1 broken arm. But Hollywood thought it would be too unbelievable to actually go by the REAL account from the MoH citation. This stuff happens in war. Real life sometimes is unbelievable, but miracles/unbelievable things happen in extraordinary circumstances. Also, the men he served with stated it was over 150 men he saved, but officially they went with 75 men. Which is still crazy. Desmond was amazing man. Americans today need to feel blessed as these men had to go through horrors of wars don't realize they should cherish living in country where you don't have to fear war on your doorstep.

Wow so happy you guys reacted to this!!!! Hacksaw Ridge is absolutely incredible, and I personally can't imagine anyone better to play Desmond's role than Andrew Garfield. As someone who isn't even remotely religious, this movie consumed my mind for months after it first released. Absolutely unforgettable, one of the best wartimes/true war stories brought to the big screen.
Awesome reaction to a masterclass film. There are 3 things I want to adress. 1) Mel Gibson has Directed or Starred in so many GOD TIER films. The ones I'd recommend are Apocalypto, Passion of the Christ, Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and the Patriot. These are all movies based on historical events, theyre not exactly accurate but they're really well made. 2) Ari, you mentioned its good to see Vince in a serious role. Well in 'Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)' he plays a psychopathic thug/criminal and he fkn terrifies me in that role. 3) Denise, That snake ring is so fkn dope! Its just badass! Thats all... Had to force my wife to watch it. “I don’t want to watch a war movie!!” “Just trust me, if you don’t like it you win.” “Wow… that was a really good movie.”
I'm loving you guys' reactions! Especially when you give filmmaking insight, like the cinematographer and director being in complete tandem in the battle scene. As a layperson interested in the artform from the outside, it's amazing to hear those kinds of glimpses into the filmmaking process. And Vince Vaughn completely won me over in this film. You definitely see his comedic chops in the early scenes, but he's so intense in the rest of it--his physical stature helps too. Sometimes I think comedians turn out to be some of the best dramatic actors. Look at Tom Hanks (maybe not a comedian, but he was in pretty much just comedies in the '80s), and Amy Adams, whose breakout was Enchanted.

this is my favourite movie ever. nothing really comes close for me to be honest. it's so incredibly powerful and so unbelievably heartfelt. i cry everytime, at everything. as you said, what a guy.
Desmond Doss used to live close to me and the woman who lived across the street was some relation to his wife. At one time this was like a Seventh Day Adventist enclave. I was able to go to a special screening of the movie and many of the people there had known him or were relatives. Mostly real old people. Let me tell you, there was not a dry eye in the house. Strange how people throw around the term "hero" Desmond goes way beyond that.
I might not be religious, but I absolutely believe that a higher power was looking out for Desmond. All of these men were true heroes, but Desmond was a different level of hero. He was one of the most honorable, humble, and empathetic man I have ever heard of, and the fact that he chose not to kill made him even braver than ever. This is one of the most incredible stories from WW2 of them all. He is a true inspiration for what we should aspire to be.
If you have never watched the Cell, I HIGHLY recommend watching it. It’s one of my favorite horror movies and has Vince Vaughn in a serious role. This was actually the first role I knew him in!! It’s got amazing atmosphere and affects. Jennifer Lopez and Vincent D’Onofrio are also in it and and IMO it’s Vincent’s BEST role. Glad you enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge!
I'd never hard of this film or the story until I was in Okinawa last month and decided to get off at the last metro stop to see what was there. Ended up on this hill with signs telling the story. It was crazy seeing this location where all these horrible things had happened, and now it was just grass an sun and butterflies.
This is the first time I noticed that things used in the beginning for violence like belt for whipping and brick knocking out Hal, were used to save the boy under car.
Another great WW II movie, that I've never seen anyone react too, is "Hart's War" with Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell. It's in my top 5 war movies of all time. But, Band of Brothers is a super MUST SEE, as I'm sure many people have told you before.
Watched this twice in the theaters and one thing you don’t get on home video was the sound design of the war scenes. Literally, when the bullets start flying on Hacksaw Ridge, the Volume went up to 11 and was shaking seats in the auditorium whereas it was very quiet before. The contrast was very noticeable and effective, the film was awesome!
One of the things most people do not get on this story. Desmond Doss was at Hacksaw Ridge for a total of 3 days, only 24 hours on the top of the Ridge. In 12 hours Desmond Doss saved 78 soldiers, for the 24 hours he was there he treated 180 soldiers in total.
Someone already recommended it, but Imma recommend it again anyway: 1917 is an amazing piece of art, you should definitely consider reacting to it. It was one of the first movies I saw at the cinema (I live in a small town, we only got a cinema a few years back) , I was in awe at the filmmaking. The score, the visuals...T'was really something to behold on a big screen. Wish I could go back and see it again on a big screen
Desmond Doss was actually the second Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, but he was the only Conscientious Objector who refused to use a weapon. The first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor was Alvin York, the difference between Desmond Doss and Alvin York was where Desmond refused to use a weapon, Alvin York used his gift with a rifle to save lives. There is a movie about Alvin York's life called Sergeant York made in 1941. The movie goes into his life before WWI, finding God, meeting his future wife Gracie, being drafted, going through Boot Camp, being on the front and what he did to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
I would love to see you react to Band Of Brothers mini series. I think you would be blown away. It follows Easy Company, some of the original army special forces/Para troops. And throughout the series, the interview quite a few of the surviving soldiers. Incredibly powerful series. This was made by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The same duo that, of course, Saving Private Ryan.

I love this movie so much and keep telling people about it. I've also watched too many reaction videos 😅 It’s just such an incredible story! I really liked your video because you included several clips that others left out but each detail is so important and everything came together beautifully. No one else that I've watched commented on the score, but you guys are right, it's so good. "The score has no business being this good." So funny.
Vince Vaughn killed it, he was hilarious. And so did Hugo Weaving, he was so passionate. Amazing movie, showing that even through the darkest times people can keep their dignity and soul. A beautiful story of a brave dude.

Desmond actually saved in excess of 100, but he wouldn't agree to that so they compromised on 75. He did such crazy stuff that they had to leave it out of the film because no one would have believed it. The scene where he was wounded and was transported they had to put him down in reality. Another injured soldier was needing help Desmond crawled off the stretcher to help him and Desmond have to be out back on his stretcher. And told to stay out...he'd done enough.

The craziest part is that the people at that field hospital counted over 100 saved by Doss. Doss was in such a trance he was like " Maybe it was like fifty, but not 100. " - so when they gave him the Medal of Honor, they credited him with 75 to appease both Doss and the other people that all vouched for him.
In addition to serving in Okinawa, which you see here, Doss saw combat on the islands of Guam and Leyte where he was awarded the bronze star twice. I think most of the troops he served with lost their objections to him before they got to Okinawa.
I really do wish they would have shown Desmond Doss' entire campaign. The Okinawa invasion was right at the end of the war. He was around for nearly the whole island campaign in the Pacific. And he saved people and proved himself during EVERY invasion. The events of the movie are actually combined from accounts of his entire time in the Pacific, not just Okinawa. And there's one that stands out from all the rest that I reeeeeally wish would have been in: Desmond was nearly killed by a Japanese sniper, twice. But each time the sniper fired, his rifle jammed. For absolutely no reason, his gun just jammed and only when he tried to fire at Desmond! The sniper actually survived the war and confirmed it years later.
When you got God to your side, no one's against you. Every time I see this movie and Mr. Desmond says "let me save one more" it brings tears to my eyes. it's a very wonderful movie. I hope there's more Desmond Does outhere and mankind would make it. Great reaction and regards from Mexico to you two frends.
To anyone that has seen combat, war is H.E. DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS. Most people when getting shot at run away from the gunfire. But combat medics have to run towards the gunfire, because that's where the wounded soldiers are. For a combat medic like CPL Desmond Doss, and the heroic things that he did, and the many lives that he saved, whether from the strength of God or from the strength of pure willpower to keep moving is nothing but heroic, Desmond Doss saved 75 soldiers on Hacksaw Ridge, but his entire time in the military he saved about 200 soldiers during that time. But Desmond Doss didn't think he was a hero. He was just doing his job. Remember all gave some and some gave all. Everyone that has seen the horrors of combat, knows that they left a piece of themselves on whatever battlefield they were on. Whether during WWII or in the sands of the middle east. The piece that is left behind is their lost innocence of having to fight in whatever battle. During the movie, they downplayed a lot of what Desmond Doss did, because they didn't think that the audience would believe it. He did that and he did much, MUCH more. RIP CPL Desmond Doss. For those that have served and for those that are serving I want to say thank you for your service. To those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, I want to say to those individuals, rest easy soldier, others now have the watch. In bootcamp, they break the person and build them up to where they can do their duties and do them well, and hopefully survive whatever H.E. DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS comes their way. The way that you sleep, you catch little catnaps here and there. In a battle like this, there isn't much time for sleep. That's what you know, because every little sound could be the enemy coming for you. So, you always have to be on the alert. Sorry that my comment is so long.
Mel Gibson did an amazing job with the direction! The film is so powerful and inspirational and got so many things right: Tom Doss's trauma from WW1, his alcoholism, and abusive behavior (brilliant acting by Hugo Weaving), the love story between Desmond and Dorothy, the power of Desmond's conviction, faith, and courage, and the brutality of war. I particularly liked Smitty's character arc. Smitty transforms from being one of the most hated characters in the story to being one of the most beloved. (Some great acting by Luke Bracey.) And Andrew Garfield!! What an amazing performance! He was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe and he won a Critics' Choice Award (and several other awards) for his performance in the film. He was just phenomenal!
If you loved Saving Private Ryan and enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge you will absolutely love "Band of Brothers" it's probably my favorite HBO mini-series. It was created by Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks they also served as execute producers after they had worked on Saving Private Ryan together. It was adapted from a book and all the characters are real people and their stories. There is a documentary where they spoke with the real soldiers called "The Men of Easy Company". It also is packed with huge stars many before they hit it big, lots of them went on to have successful careers. I have never been all that big on war movies or shows myself but Band of Brothers really had a huge impact on me, it's probably the most I have ever re-watched a show before.
Anything directed by Mel Gibson is amazing. For other war movies: Black Hawk Down, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, & Lone Survivor are great movies as well. Definitely worth checking them out!
I was a Marine. I spent bootcamp in trouble because I couldn't stop laughing when the DIs would start tearing into one of us. I used to joke around that I knew I was ready to graduate bootcamp, because I went a full day not getting thrashed for laughing. 😅😂

He actually saved more than 100, the 75 is just the official number the military credited him for saving because they thought no one would believe that he saved that many and might not have gotten the recognition he deserved.
It wasnt because they thought no one would believe them but because there were reports saying he saved 50 and others saying over 100, and so they basically comprimised and said 75. But the movie did downplay and leave a lot of stuff out to make it more believable
@@AH64Gunship If I remember correctly, the army believed it was over 100 - somewhere in the vicinity of 120, but Doss only "admitted" to (claimed) 50 - so they ended up compromising to 75 - up from what Doss said but less than they actually believed to be true.
Love this movie, the only issue I had was that I needed a reconciliation between Andrew Garfield and his wife. I understand why they went to the real life clips when they did...but I think I still needed to see the characters back together.
He had TB by this point from his first conflicts he was part of at Leyte. He loss a lung an several ribs. Only a person who was protected by a higher power could live through this!
You two, first of all, I think your reactions are great! Keep it up. I have some insight into how the wounded might have felt while they were waiting for Desmond Dawes to return to help them down the cliff. When I was in my late teens and twenties, 40 years ago, I had recurring bleeding ulcers, so I know what it feels like to lose lots of blood real fast and to almost die from this loss. One time, I was sure I was just hours away from death, but I had no energy left to be upset. So, some of the wounded might have been past feeling anything. Another time, I lived alone in my apartment, and I knew that I was in bad trouble from experience. I had to get dressed and ride my bicycle to my parents' house because my phone was broken, and I couldn't call them. That time, my overriding emotion was anger. I had enough rage at the unfairness of everything (bleeding ulcer plus broken phone on the same morning) that I made it to my folks' house in time to collapse and be taken to the hospital. Some of the wounded might have been more angry than afraid.

There is a great documentary about Desmond Doss. It is where the producer and director got the interviews and testimonials at the end of this film. Bottom line: This film does NOT come close to the hell the Army put Desmond through nor does it even touch Desmond's true acts of heroism.

One little detail in the film that I love is when Doss, who says over and over again that he won't touch a rifle, doesn't hesitate to pick one up and use it as a tool to create a stretcher for the Sergeant. He made that promise to himself that he wouldn't touch one, but when it came down to it, he wasn't stuck on the technicality of that promise, it was the spirit of the promise, and that meant using a rifle as a tool to save a life.
In real life, Desmond Doss used a rifle stock a splint for his leg. There are reports that he broke the rifle in order to make it non-functional as a weapon while others say he searched for a broken rifle stock.
The entire story is crazier in real life
I always loved the part where he says an injured Japanese soldier. To him, it didn't matter the race or what side he was on. He was there to save lives.
So true - it's so easy to lose sight of one's humanity, especially in war I imagine, so him being able to make space for that is truly admirable.

Several soldiers reported having doss in their line of sight, gun lined up, shooting and the gun jamming. Truly beyond belief.
I was in the Navy Seabees. We went through a basic rescue course as part of our training. That knot he tied, the "bra" is still taught to this day as it is the best way to support the body weight without risking cutting off circulation in a situation like the one in the movie.

In some significant ways, this excellent true story of Desmond Doss was toned down to make it more believable. However, there are some things that were changed that you might want to know about. Doss and his unit had actually taken part in two previous Pacific island invasions before they got to Okinawa, and Doss had actually been decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor twice in the second battle, so Desmond was already a well respected member of the unit before Hacksaw Ridge. You can understand why they decided to compress the story entirely to the Okinawa campaign to keep the story easier to understand. Some of the other changes they made are also understandable, such as they amped up the drama of the trial a lot, and the situation where he leaves his wife at the altar while he sits in a cell is not quite the way that happened.

I strongly recommend checking out History vs Hollywood for after you watch movies based on real history. They are usually the best place to get solid information about historical inaccuracies in a very easy to understand format, when they have an article posted about the film in question.👍

Then I politely point out how far they divert from the real history, maybe give an example or two, and try to include some kind of a source where folks can start to do their own research.💯

Desmond's father brought up Belleau Woods, which prompted the secretary to talk to the General. The Battle of Belleau Woods was the first major battle of the US forces in WWI. The father wears the Silver Star, the third-highest military combat decoration awarded for valor and heroism over a brief period, such as a battle lasting one or two days. Between referencing the Battle and his Silver Star, the secretary knew he was a brave soldier who deserved respect and help from her.
My favorite part of the movie is when Desmond is all by himself at the top of the ridge and is praying and says “I can’t hear You.” And then you hear a wounded soldier crying out and then Desmond realizes that God is speaking to him through the wounded men on the ground and responds by going out there to save them. To me, the sound of God’s commands to help his fellow man is so powerful in that scene.
Chills, every time I see that scene. It's the exact inverse of the parable where a man who prays for help, but because he's stuck in his ways, he's unable to see how God answered his prayers in so many different ways. Instead, here, Doss actively prays AND LISTENS. He doesn't expect God to talk to him directly. He just says "give me a sign".

The fact that this movie is watered down cause people wouldnt have believed the real story if it was presented the way it happened says alot. Doss said he saves 50 lads, his teammates and officers insisted it was more than 100, the official number was declared 75, thats how admirable and respectful that man was.

Right!? We were mesmerized by his performance in this. All the emotions he was able to provide in that dinner scene amongst other moments in the film. He absolutely deserved some recognition!
Hugo Weaving's performance was indeed amazing! He should have gotten more accolades, but he was Nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role by the Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Awards and was the Winner of Best Supporting Actor by the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.
Lack of nominations and awards…Kinda says a whole lot about the shallowness and pettiness of the “academy” don’t it?
It’s a shame that of the thousands in the academy. Most of them have no concept of what a quality war film looks like. There’s also the FACT
that many will never vote awards for certain classes of people, most notably, any professed practicing Christian, pro lifer, or no vaccine, no globalist critic has minimal chance of any positive recognition.
Hugo is a phenomenal actor, with incredible range. I first saw him in _the interview,_ having no idea who, or even what I was watching. I was captivated by the actor, and his story - a movie I usually would have switched off
The part where Desmond on the Edge of the Ridge and asked the Lord, what is it what he wants him to do? Desmond heard words Medic someone was calling for Medic. Desmond knew what his Lord wanted him to do. Desmond got his Helmet and going into the explosions from the artillery shells from the Battleships. When he was going into the explosions it reminded me a verse.
Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
This movie always reminds me of my great grandfather who fought in WWII. He was crossing a minefield to try to help a friend and ended up getting his leg blown off. All while his wife was waiting for him back home. The courage of these soldiers was amazing.
That's why they're called the greatest generation for a reason. They were all true heroes, as I'm not sure if we'll ever see this amount of truly brave heroes like this again. I have nothing but heartbreak and absolute respect for these men who sacrificed so much for the free world.
Excellent reaction and synopsis of the movie. The real story is even more extraordinary. The greatest miracle of all is the fact that Doss actually survived the war. He participated in 3 bloody battle of which Okinawa was is last. Prior to Okinawa, Doss saw action in the Philippines and before that on Guam. He earned a bronze for courage, going to wounded soldiers while bullets were flying all around him. On one occasion he disobeyed orders to stay put and went out to save fallen Americans. Even after he was wounded and was waiting to be evaluated he crawled off his stretcher to give aid to others. You probably saw his picture with his arm in a cast. While injured himself and giving aid to others, a bullet struck him in the arm. He gave his stretcher to another and wound up crawling several hundred yards to the aid station.
The movie basically compresses events into a 2 hr. movie. To tell the real story, you'd have to make a 10 hr.+ film. Desmond's real story begs the question, "Was Desmond just lucky or was God just with him." The fact that Desmond was a vegetarian and therefore did not have the long lasting energy of protein nor did he ever eat a full meal and still had the strength and energy to do what he did (75 men X 150 lbs./man = 11,250lbs). Desmond carried, dragged, and assisted walking 11,250 pounds then lowered from a cliff, all while lacking proper nutrition and suffering from tuberculosis. Yes, in 1946 he was diagnosed as contracting the disease during the war and had one lung and several ribs removed. Was Desmond just ver lucky or was Devine Providence at work? A Japanese soldier that survived Okinawa said that 3 times he had the only American medic in his sights for an easy shot and 3 times his rifle failed to fire. After his third attempt he stopped trying to shoot the medic because he figured the Gods did not want this man to die. Good luck or Devine Intervention?

Mel Gibson is a spectacular director and filmmaker. If his name is attached as director, you can be assured, it will be a good movie. Braveheart was probably his best film ever, but he does a great job. Thanks for sharing the reaction and Desmond Doss is definitely a hero as this told the story of a unique man in a difficult era coming out of the great depression and WW2 for America. This film is one of my favorites! Check out The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise, if you have not already. It was definitely epic and moving like Hacksaw Ridge.

He had seen combat in about three different places I believe and hacksaw ridge was won the last ones he did The amount of courage, and the faith he had in God is amazing. He allegedly saved 75 men but the captain at that time said he saved over 100 men, Doss was trying to be modest and said he only saved about 50 but they came to a compromise and said 75.
You two HAVE to do Band of Brothers! If you like Saving Private Ryan and this, then you will absolutely love that limited series. It’s nice to have a filmmaker’s perspective to notice the things my family and friends always call me weird about.

A fantastic movie, especially because it is taken from real life. Kudos to Mel Gibson for showing the horror of war so well while also showcasing the human elements so clearly. “We Were Soldiers” is another Gibson film crafted in the same gritty, heart-rending, yet human way - I hope you will react to it soon !

As a Marine who spent half of my career on Okinawa, we did the battle tour at least once a year. Hacksaw, kakazu, and half moon ridges were terrifying to imagine fighting up. they are barren desolate places with no cover.
This was a very powerful film to me, I mean sometimes after watching a movie you feel happy, or sad, or scared, or just simply entertained, but after watching this one, I just felt one simple but meaningful thing, I felt the need to be a better human being
1:53 p.m....This story was SO POWERFUL and I felt the same way! After watching this and seeing how faithful Mr Doss was in his convictions, and his faith in God, and how he continued to honor the Sabbath while he was in the army....and also him standing firm in his belief in God, drawing strength from Him! And the love he showed for EVERY human being truly encouraged me to do so much better in my walk with Jesus!!! And the way he kept saying, "Just one more God....". That ended up being my favorite phrase, and request when I pray!💖🙏.
The wounded japanese soldier scene really put the impression of "These are not soldiers fighting, these are leaders fighting and using soldiers as pawns."

This is my all time favourite movie. People talk highly of SPR, but this for me is head and shoulders above it. The real story. The acting. The editing. The score. And I've seen this maybe 15/20 times and numerous reactions.
And I think I've wept every time I've seen it. The emotion, the intensity just everything about it.
Great reaction you two. The real story of Desmond is even more than this as he actually was saving people with 1 broken arm. But Hollywood thought it would be too unbelievable to actually go by the REAL account from the MoH citation. This stuff happens in war. Real life sometimes is unbelievable, but miracles/unbelievable things happen in extraordinary circumstances. Also, the men he served with stated it was over 150 men he saved, but officially they went with 75 men. Which is still crazy. Desmond was amazing man. Americans today need to feel blessed as these men had to go through horrors of wars don't realize they should cherish living in country where you don't have to fear war on your doorstep.

Wow so happy you guys reacted to this!!!! Hacksaw Ridge is absolutely incredible, and I personally can't imagine anyone better to play Desmond's role than Andrew Garfield. As someone who isn't even remotely religious, this movie consumed my mind for months after it first released. Absolutely unforgettable, one of the best wartimes/true war stories brought to the big screen.
Awesome reaction to a masterclass film. There are 3 things I want to adress.
1) Mel Gibson has Directed or Starred in so many GOD TIER films. The ones I'd recommend are Apocalypto, Passion of the Christ, Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and the Patriot. These are all movies based on historical events, theyre not exactly accurate but they're really well made.
2) Ari, you mentioned its good to see Vince in a serious role. Well in 'Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)' he plays a psychopathic thug/criminal and he fkn terrifies me in that role.
3) Denise, That snake ring is so fkn dope! Its just badass! Thats all...

I'm loving you guys' reactions! Especially when you give filmmaking insight, like the cinematographer and director being in complete tandem in the battle scene. As a layperson interested in the artform from the outside, it's amazing to hear those kinds of glimpses into the filmmaking process. And Vince Vaughn completely won me over in this film. You definitely see his comedic chops in the early scenes, but he's so intense in the rest of it--his physical stature helps too. Sometimes I think comedians turn out to be some of the best dramatic actors. Look at Tom Hanks (maybe not a comedian, but he was in pretty much just comedies in the '80s), and Amy Adams, whose breakout was Enchanted.

Desmond Doss used to live close to me and the woman who lived across the street was some relation to his wife. At one time this was like a Seventh Day Adventist enclave. I was able to go to a special screening of the movie and many of the people there had known him or were relatives. Mostly real old people. Let me tell you, there was not a dry eye in the house. Strange how people throw around the term "hero" Desmond goes way beyond that.
My dad was in the Philippines in WWII, traumatized him. He had PTSD. He was at Iwo Jima, Saipan and Tinnian. It was absolutely awful
Another WW2 movie I think you two would love is Fury. Brad Pitt, Jon Bernthal, Shia Lebouf, and Michael Pena are in it.

I might not be religious, but I absolutely believe that a higher power was looking out for Desmond. All of these men were true heroes, but Desmond was a different level of hero. He was one of the most honorable, humble, and empathetic man I have ever heard of, and the fact that he chose not to kill made him even braver than ever. This is one of the most incredible stories from WW2 of them all. He is a true inspiration for what we should aspire to be.
If you have never watched the Cell, I HIGHLY recommend watching it. It’s one of my favorite horror movies and has Vince Vaughn in a serious role. This was actually the first role I knew him in!! It’s got amazing atmosphere and affects. Jennifer Lopez and Vincent D’Onofrio are also in it and and IMO it’s Vincent’s BEST role. Glad you enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge!

I'd never hard of this film or the story until I was in Okinawa last month and decided to get off at the last metro stop to see what was there. Ended up on this hill with signs telling the story. It was crazy seeing this location where all these horrible things had happened, and now it was just grass an sun and butterflies.
This is the first time I noticed that things used in the beginning for violence like belt for whipping and brick knocking out Hal, were used to save the boy under car.

Another great WW II movie, that I've never seen anyone react too, is "Hart's War" with Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell. It's in my top 5 war movies of all time. But, Band of Brothers is a super MUST SEE, as I'm sure many people have told you before.

Watched this twice in the theaters and one thing you don’t get on home video was the sound design of the war scenes. Literally, when the bullets start flying on Hacksaw Ridge, the Volume went up to 11 and was shaking seats in the auditorium whereas it was very quiet before. The contrast was very noticeable and effective, the film was awesome!
One of the things most people do not get on this story. Desmond Doss was at Hacksaw Ridge for a total of 3 days, only 24 hours on the top of the Ridge. In 12 hours Desmond Doss saved 78 soldiers, for the 24 hours he was there he treated 180 soldiers in total.
As someone currently in the military, I couldn't even fathom being in it during that era
Someone already recommended it, but Imma recommend it again anyway: 1917 is an amazing piece of art, you should definitely consider reacting to it. It was one of the first movies I saw at the cinema (I live in a small town, we only got a cinema a few years back) , I was in awe at the filmmaking. The score, the visuals...T'was really something to behold on a big screen. Wish I could go back and see it again on a big screen
Desmond Doss was actually the second Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, but he was the only Conscientious Objector who refused to use a weapon. The first Conscientious Objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor was Alvin York, the difference between Desmond Doss and Alvin York was where Desmond refused to use a weapon, Alvin York used his gift with a rifle to save lives. There is a movie about Alvin York's life called Sergeant York made in 1941. The movie goes into his life before WWI, finding God, meeting his future wife Gracie, being drafted, going through Boot Camp, being on the front and what he did to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
I would love to see you react to Band Of Brothers mini series. I think you would be blown away. It follows Easy Company, some of the original army special forces/Para troops. And throughout the series, the interview quite a few of the surviving soldiers. Incredibly powerful series. This was made by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The same duo that, of course, Saving Private Ryan.

No one else that I've watched commented on the score, but you guys are right, it's so good. "The score has no business being this good." So funny.
Vince Vaughn killed it, he was hilarious. And so did Hugo Weaving, he was so passionate. Amazing movie, showing that even through the darkest times people can keep their dignity and soul. A beautiful story of a brave dude.

Desmond actually saved in excess of 100, but he wouldn't agree to that so they compromised on 75. He did such crazy stuff that they had to leave it out of the film because no one would have believed it. The scene where he was wounded and was transported they had to put him down in reality. Another injured soldier was needing help Desmond crawled off the stretcher to help him and Desmond have to be out back on his stretcher. And told to stay out...he'd done enough.

The craziest part is that the people at that field hospital counted over 100 saved by Doss. Doss was in such a trance he was like " Maybe it was like fifty, but not 100. " - so when they gave him the Medal of Honor, they credited him with 75 to appease both Doss and the other people that all vouched for him.
In addition to serving in Okinawa, which you see here, Doss saw combat on the islands of Guam and Leyte where he was awarded the bronze star twice. I think most of the troops he served with lost their objections to him before they got to Okinawa.
I really do wish they would have shown Desmond Doss' entire campaign. The Okinawa invasion was right at the end of the war. He was around for nearly the whole island campaign in the Pacific. And he saved people and proved himself during EVERY invasion.
The events of the movie are actually combined from accounts of his entire time in the Pacific, not just Okinawa. And there's one that stands out from all the rest that I reeeeeally wish would have been in:
Desmond was nearly killed by a Japanese sniper, twice. But each time the sniper fired, his rifle jammed. For absolutely no reason, his gun just jammed and only when he tried to fire at Desmond! The sniper actually survived the war and confirmed it years later.
When you got God to your side, no one's against you. Every time I see this movie and Mr. Desmond says "let me save one more" it brings tears to my eyes. it's a very wonderful movie. I hope there's more Desmond Does outhere and mankind would make it. Great reaction and regards from Mexico to you two frends.
To anyone that has seen combat, war is H.E. DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS. Most people when getting shot at run away from the gunfire. But combat medics have to run towards the gunfire, because that's where the wounded soldiers are. For a combat medic like CPL Desmond Doss, and the heroic things that he did, and the many lives that he saved, whether from the strength of God or from the strength of pure willpower to keep moving is nothing but heroic, Desmond Doss saved 75 soldiers on Hacksaw Ridge, but his entire time in the military he saved about 200 soldiers during that time. But Desmond Doss didn't think he was a hero. He was just doing his job. Remember all gave some and some gave all. Everyone that has seen the horrors of combat, knows that they left a piece of themselves on whatever battlefield they were on. Whether during WWII or in the sands of the middle east. The piece that is left behind is their lost innocence of having to fight in whatever battle. During the movie, they downplayed a lot of what Desmond Doss did, because they didn't think that the audience would believe it. He did that and he did much, MUCH more. RIP CPL Desmond Doss. For those that have served and for those that are serving I want to say thank you for your service. To those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, I want to say to those individuals, rest easy soldier, others now have the watch. In bootcamp, they break the person and build them up to where they can do their duties and do them well, and hopefully survive whatever H.E. DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS comes their way. The way that you sleep, you catch little catnaps here and there. In a battle like this, there isn't much time for sleep. That's what you know, because every little sound could be the enemy coming for you. So, you always have to be on the alert. Sorry that my comment is so long.
Mel Gibson did an amazing job with the direction! The film is so powerful and inspirational and got so many things right: Tom Doss's trauma from WW1, his alcoholism, and abusive behavior (brilliant acting by Hugo Weaving), the love story between Desmond and Dorothy, the power of Desmond's conviction, faith, and courage, and the brutality of war.
I particularly liked Smitty's character arc. Smitty transforms from being one of the most hated characters in the story to being one of the most beloved. (Some great acting by Luke Bracey.)
And Andrew Garfield!! What an amazing performance! He was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe and he won a Critics' Choice Award (and several other awards) for his performance in the film. He was just phenomenal!
If you loved Saving Private Ryan and enjoyed Hacksaw Ridge you will absolutely love "Band of Brothers" it's probably my favorite HBO mini-series. It was created by Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks they also served as execute producers after they had worked on Saving Private Ryan together. It was adapted from a book and all the characters are real people and their stories. There is a documentary where they spoke with the real soldiers called "The Men of Easy Company". It also is packed with huge stars many before they hit it big, lots of them went on to have successful careers. I have never been all that big on war movies or shows myself but Band of Brothers really had a huge impact on me, it's probably the most I have ever re-watched a show before.

Anything directed by Mel Gibson is amazing. For other war movies: Black Hawk Down, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, & Lone Survivor are great movies as well. Definitely worth checking them out!

I was a Marine. I spent bootcamp in trouble because I couldn't stop laughing when the DIs would start tearing into one of us. I used to joke around that I knew I was ready to graduate bootcamp, because I went a full day not getting thrashed for laughing. 😅😂

He actually saved more than 100, the 75 is just the official number the military credited him for saving because they thought no one would believe that he saved that many and might not have gotten the recognition he deserved.
It wasnt because they thought no one would believe them but because there were reports saying he saved 50 and others saying over 100, and so they basically comprimised and said 75. But the movie did downplay and leave a lot of stuff out to make it more believable

@@AH64Gunship If I remember correctly, the army believed it was over 100 - somewhere in the vicinity of 120, but Doss only "admitted" to (claimed) 50 - so they ended up compromising to 75 - up from what Doss said but less than they actually believed to be true.

Love this movie, the only issue I had was that I needed a reconciliation between Andrew Garfield and his wife. I understand why they went to the real life clips when they did...but I think I still needed to see the characters back together.
He had TB by this point from his first conflicts he was part of at Leyte. He loss a lung an several ribs. Only a person who was protected by a higher power could live through this!

You two, first of all, I think your reactions are great! Keep it up. I have some insight into how the wounded might have felt while they were waiting for Desmond Dawes to return to help them down the cliff. When I was in my late teens and twenties, 40 years ago, I had recurring bleeding ulcers, so I know what it feels like to lose lots of blood real fast and to almost die from this loss. One time, I was sure I was just hours away from death, but I had no energy left to be upset. So, some of the wounded might have been past feeling anything. Another time, I lived alone in my apartment, and I knew that I was in bad trouble from experience. I had to get dressed and ride my bicycle to my parents' house because my phone was broken, and I couldn't call them. That time, my overriding emotion was anger. I had enough rage at the unfairness of everything (bleeding ulcer plus broken phone on the same morning) that I made it to my folks' house in time to collapse and be taken to the hospital. Some of the wounded might have been more angry than afraid.
To be so brave....❤️🔥 What a true hero! He was such a blessing to so many!
