VISITING THE ICE CLIMBING PARK IN SANDSTONE MINNESOTA | WINTER IN MINNESOTA

Sandstone Minnesota is home to the Sandstone Ice Climbing Park. Built on the site of a former sandstone quarry, the Sandstone Ice Climbing Park became a reality in 2010. A system of water pipes, tubes, misting nozzles and low flow shower heads, create the amazing ice flows that are 30 to 80 feet high. The ice park typically sees climbable ice from late December to early March every winter. The Sandstone Ice Park is located in the city-owned Robinson Park and you can rent ice climbing gear right in town.
The first quarry was developed in Sandstone Minnesota in 1886 and the sandstone was used in buildings from coast to coast. Over the years, less expensive building materials became available and the quarry closed permanently in 1942.
Originally built in 1893, the Sandstone Rail Bridge crosses high above the Kettle River. It is one of the largest bridges in the state of Minnesota and continues to operate with 8 to 10 trains daily.
