So, here's what I think. Vanson and Wilkinson Tuners probably come out of the same factory (Jin Ho in Korea). I've installed loads of the tuners from any of the brands mentioned before (just not Vanson, looks like they only sell in the UK, at least not in Germany) and only had to return a set once. All others were fine. So nothing special, QC can't be perfect. The most recent set of tuners I installed are the exact same Musiclily tuners you used in the video. I experienced the same thing with the holes not fitting perfectly, but it worked out. For me they were the best affordable locking tuners I ever used. Blindfolded I wouldn't be able to tell them apart from my Gotoh MG-Ts. Smooth as butter. I was really impressed. Maybe I just got lucky. Or you were unlucky. Or something in between. Or both.
Yes indeed mate - you're spot on. I only learned this (about Jin Ho) from someone else recently commenting on this video (I love this community! 😃) The Vanson's are stamped "Jin Ho" on the underside. The musiclily ones weren't terrible, I'm keeping them on, they're decent. But the Vanson's are definitely smoother turning, feel more robust, and have a better grip on the locking wheels. With all your experience.... Do you know of any budget locking staggered sets? Around £45 - £50 would be a great price point 😁👍
@@stevecassidyguitar unfortunately not. I know Jin Ho also produces some of the staggered locking tuners for Harley Benton, but I so far I couldn't find any budget friendly staggered locking tuners. Edit: If I really really want staggered I use the before mentioned Gotoh MG-T. Should come for like £50 - £70, as I pay around 60- 80 € most of the time. Depends... Edit 2: I just found out the information previously posted at this place was wrong, what a shame.
@@tostrmofo6686 Oh wow!! Nice one! 😃👍 That's brilliant news - they must be really new! 😃 I've been checking on and off for a while. I did a review of the Harley Benton Fusion ii and was asking if anyone knew what the tuners were and where to get them as they're brilliant 👌 Awesome find thanks again bro! 🥳
@@stevecassidyguitarWell unfurtunately that was a misinformation. I will edit it out. I just got in contact with HB and they told me none of them are staggered. It seems like someone misinterpreted something. Edit: So the Thomann website claimes the "6L NI" to be staggered. That's where the mistake originated probably. I also watched your Fusion II video last night (I couldn't sleep, you gained quite a few views out of that circumstance). I liked mine a lot, hat the HH FR version and couldn't enjoy it any more after getting my first Ibanez Prestige with Super Wizard HP neck. As much as I love that neck, it destroyed quite a few relationships to other guitars I just don't feel comfortable to play anymore. Btw. I ended up ordering a Fazley Strat last night as well. I hope I will like the neck, as it is s affordable... If I do I might cancel the Nashville-Tele project.
@@stevecassidyguitar So, good news. At least the 6l gd and ni are as I stated before staggered. What happened: I looked at the engineering drawing and saw the following: the shafts have the same lenghts, but the string holes are in deed staggered. I asked Thomann if this was the case with the other Harley Benton 6l locking tuners as well, as they don't have a drawing in the description. They answered that none of them are staggered. Today they contacted me again to tell me that they made a mistake and that the tuners are staggered. I have them check if this is the case for the balck and chrome ones as well, as they initially stated it is not. I will updated you as soon as they come back to me.
Agreed. Jump in and getting your hands dirty. These guitars are not hard at all. Actually the set up is the crucial tetiuos part. Building kit was pretty easy.
If it doesn't have "JIN HO" stamped on the bottom, then it's not worth it, Chinese made with quality issues. If it's a JIN HO rebrand (like Tote Ninja or probably these Vanson, maybe even some Guykers etc.) then they're solid tuners from Korea.
I bought these and they didn't even last me a year. Two stopped working at the same time somehow, just stopped turning. Don't cheap out on tuners, got to pay for quality.
Honestly , before changing the tuners , we must know this luthier technique , i have seen the effect on a a guitar with brand new strings ,with very meh meh tuners , it's just AMAZING .... th-cam.com/video/opmg6lK8FkY/w-d-xo.html As i don't know a lot about locking tuners , i can say that this is the best technique to get close to them , i wonder if it isn't better , you lock the string ..... Those who already know it won't need this video , but i guess that they aren't a majority .... Anyway it can spare some money ....
Each to their own eh? 🤷 They are a big improvement over the stock tuners on the Fazley/Jet (but those were REALLY bad 😆). The Vanson's and other higher priced lockers I've tried feel better than the Musiclily's - to me 😉 Thanks for your comment though 🙂🙏
I'm not sure the locking feature is worth it, vanson standard seem perfect just as good as Gotoh IMHO. Locking tuners have the rep. of snapping strings too.
Good points well made sir. I like the locking feature mainly for convenience and ...emergencies 🙈 I need those quick string changes, as I'm foolish enough to only bring one guitar to a gig 🙈 I've never experienced Lockers breaking a string (yet) currently got em on 15 guitars, various brands and prices.
Nice one! 😃👍
That's brilliant news - they must be really new! 😃 I've been checking on and off for a while.
I did a review of the Harley Benton Fusion ii and was asking if anyone knew what the tuners were and where to get them as they're brilliant 👌
Awesome find thanks again bro!
I think both chords were subscription. But my grandad being a Scot what would I know.
Edit! Apologies Just rewatched the video - I forgot about the subscription chords! 🙈
Thanks for the sub mate! 🙏 Welcome to the channel 👋😀
As far as looks go Hip Shot open gear locking tuners are absolute guitar jewelry!
Agreed! 😎👌
Agreed. Jump in and getting your hands dirty. These guitars are not hard at all. Actually the set up is the crucial tetiuos part. Building kit was pretty easy.
Couldn't agree more Re set-ups takes a lot of time and experience to get it dialled in how you like it 👍
If it doesn't have "JIN HO" stamped on the bottom, then it's not worth it, Chinese made with quality issues. If it's a JIN HO rebrand (like Tote Ninja or probably these Vanson, maybe even some Guykers etc.) then they're solid tuners from Korea.
Ah! Good to know! Thanks for that - I've seen the Jin Ho on various tuners and always wondered about that.
Great info - thank you! 🙏
I bought these and they didn't even last me a year. Two stopped working at the same time somehow, just stopped turning. Don't cheap out on tuners, got to pay for quality.
I'm not surprised mate 😬Mines are still working, but they don't feel as good quality to me as the Wilkinson/Vansons.
Locking tuners! 😀
What's your favourite? School me! 😎👍
Duesenberg. They have the post hole like the vintage style tuners, which works a treat. And look great😊
@@aussiephildan440 Never tried those - will check em out.
Cheers 😃👍
Honestly , before changing the tuners , we must know this luthier technique , i have seen the effect on a a guitar with brand new strings ,with very meh meh tuners , it's just AMAZING ....
th-cam.com/video/opmg6lK8FkY/w-d-xo.html
As i don't know a lot about locking tuners , i can say that this is the best technique to get close to them , i wonder if it isn't better , you lock the string .....
Those who already know it won't need this video , but i guess that they aren't a majority ....
Anyway it can spare some money ....
Nice video, but I couldn't disagree more. Musiclily Pro 6 inline Locking String Tuning Pegs are excellent.
Each to their own eh? 🤷
They are a big improvement over the stock tuners on the Fazley/Jet (but those were REALLY bad 😆). The Vanson's and other higher priced lockers I've tried feel better than the Musiclily's - to me 😉
Thanks for your comment though 🙂🙏
Thank you~
I'm not sure the locking feature is worth it, vanson standard seem perfect just as good as Gotoh IMHO. Locking tuners have the rep. of snapping strings too.
Good points well made sir.
I like the locking feature mainly for convenience and ...emergencies 🙈
I need those quick string changes, as I'm foolish enough to only bring one guitar to a gig 🙈
I've never experienced Lockers breaking a string (yet) currently got em on 15 guitars, various brands and prices.
Wish I never typed that - Guaranteed string break this week now! 🙈
Probably not used, just a sweaty fingered worker loading the product in packaging.
Unacceptable! 🧐
