    “It’s all about the Pentiums”
    “Amish Paradise”
    “Tacky”
    “Word Crimes”
    “Perform This Way”
    “Foil”
You won’t go wrong with any of those parodies.

@@dalehammers4425 - he got permission from one of Coolio's people, but that person didn't check with Coolio so Coolio was totally blindsided and yes, he was very angry about it. They worked it out eventually. Weird Al has never done anything without permission, even though he legally could...in fact, most artists are honored that he wants to parody their work.

    • @dalehammers4425
      @dalehammers4425 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@professionalvampire1 Yeah the way I said that made it seem like he didnt, he got his companies permission without Coolio's clearance. But honestly, I can understand why Coolio didnt want that particular song parodied, its a very important song about the culture facing blacks. Weird Al would never step on toes intentionally, he was a pure class guy. Absolutely agree it was an honor for Weird Al to parody you though, it meant you were up there finally to even catch his attention.

I envy your first time experiencing "Weird" Al Yankovic for the first time. We heard the parody songs long before ever getting to see the music videos on MTV back in the 80's when MTV actually played music videos that were done for the purpose of promoting the music on music television.
His back catalogue could keep your channel busy for the next year easily.
Tips for next listen/watch - any of them. Get google up as parody songs can be time locked so you may need to look up a reference.
Check out the original Michael Jackson video so you know just how closely the parody was done.

    Alright, a couple of things.....
First, it helps to be familiar with the songs/videos of the artists Al is parodying. Michael Jackson loved Al's work, and did a lot to help him out in the beginning. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana once stated "When Al called to get permission to do 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', he knew he'd 'made it'."
I can only recommend that you start with his early work, and go straight through his discography. Al is a legend, and I'm honestly shocked you've never heard of him.

  • @thrakkorzog75002
    @thrakkorzog75002 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Fun story is that Weird Al met up with Nirvana about parodying them.
Kurt Cobain "So are are you going to make another song about food?"
Weird Al "I'm gonna make a song about how now nobody knows what you're saying."
Kurt Cobain "Fair enough, That's cool."
"And we freaking made it now that Weird Al is making fun of us."

I like a lot of his newer parodies:
"Handy" vs. "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea
"Party in the CIA" vs. "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus
"Trapped in the Drive Thru" vs. "Trapped in the Closet (Pt. 1-3)" by R. Kelly
It helps to watch the originals first. Also, his 'interviews' are really funny. My favorite is his with Eminem.

I saw Weird Al in concert in Kenai, Alaska years ago and I have to tell you they are the hardest working band ever! They come out in costume on the set and do one song; then they go backstage and get a wardrobe change while stage hands does the set for the next song. During this quick change, one of their videos play on huge big-screens (one they're not going to do in concert). These guys work their tails off and the band is freaking amazing. Al was valedictorian of his class in L.A.

So, here's an abridged history of Weird Al. He began writing parodies for fun late in high school. He started after listening to the syndicated radio show Dr. Demento, who played a lot of listener created novelty songs. In college a friend convinced him to send in some of his songs and they instantly became favorites of the show's fans. A friend of Dr. Demento helped Al get a contract with a record label and Al earned popular acclaim with parodies of songs like Michal Jackson's 'Bad' (Fat) and Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' (Like A Surgeon). He hit a slump in the late 80s, but recovered after he parodied Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' (Smells Like Nirvana). Kirk Cobain went on record saying that learning that Weird Al wanted to parody him is when he first felt that he was finally successful. Al had a fairly steady career since then, releasing a new album every half-decade or so filled with an even spread of parodies and original songs. A few years back he finished his studio contract with his album Mandatory Fun (first comedy album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200). He's toured a couple times since then, hasn't made any major releases with the possible exception of his Polka Medley (exactly what it sounds like) of Hamilton (Lin Manuel Miranda FREAKED!), and shortly before COVID, Al got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

I totally agree with you, my friend. My name is Victor Nila JR, and I an a multi-genre musician. Weird Al Yankovic is a hero whenever I need a good giggle, or something just to feel super silly. Please be on the lookout for me, and for my future videos. Although I'm wishing to be the next Weird Al, I'm not going to make as much burlesques as he did. Instead, I'm going to render the sweetest power pop songs for your enjoyment, adorable nursery rhymes, and when it's time to say goodnight, you will hear the most heartwarming lullabyes that will tenderly soothe the beautiful cherub in your heart. Yes, I wish to be the [proper idol] for today's kiddos, or for another term of endearment, my wee nurslings. Also, I am a Kemeticist, and that is someone who is a practitioner of the revival of ancient Egyptian religion. In Kemeticism, some of the gods are actually babies. Moreover, I was recently introduced to my miracle baby sister in early January of 2021, and let me tell you; such gentle ecstasy when I beheld her, and it was so heartfelt when she reached out for me and held my hand when she was only two days old. So remember, please remember, this is your friendly uncle, and I can't wait to enliven our planet with my utterly angelic sound. I promise you that things are gonna get better than ever when I enter the world, and no metter how hard life gets, always bestride over all that is benighted, and swaddle your heart in the goodness of all that is righteous. If I sound like another Michael jackson, you are right! I know I'll never match his prestige, but I fell that he's left his endeavour of making the world a better place in my hands now. This is Uncle Vic JR, and I hope you'll come by to play with me.

You'll have fun with all of Weir Al's library.
The thing you need to remember about all of his parodies is that they are all authorized, either by the artist or the record label. Amish paradise is the only song of his, that I know of, that the original artist didn't approve of, but Coolio wasn't answering Al's requests, so he went to the record label and they gave Al permission to do it, so he did.

And his name originally had nothing to do with his music. He graduated high school early and started college at 16. He was a shy nerd of a loner so his dorm mates started calling him Weird Al. (He got his degree in Architecture from Cal-Poly.)

Artists like Michael Jackson and James Brown understood early on that Weird Al had access to a broader audience, so they would allow him to use costumes and sets from their prior videos because they knew that it would help them too.

"Weird Al" is famous for superb parodies of 80's and 90's Hitsongs.
Some of his parodies (like this one, imo his best one) are perfectly tuned to the original videos.
Definitely worth to check them out!

Hardware Store from the album Poodle Hat is must watch. Fun Fact: Michael Jackson supplied the set for Fat. It was the prop set he used for the "badder" movie version remake of Bad.

Anything weird Al is legit gold. He has been around for over 40 years with the absolute best production and the truest for of parody. Masterful way to have fun with the artist and song without being disrespectful or mean. This is why he is always given permission for the use of their music.

Weird Al became a star by 1984 making a parody of Michael Jackson's 'Beat it' ("Eat it") & has a long list of great parodies...
James Brown ('Living with a hernia'), Nirvana ('Smells like Nirvana'), Coolio ('Amish paradise'), Lady Gaga ('Perform this way'), Chamillionaire ('White and nerdy'), P. Diddy ("It's all about the Pentiums"), The Kinks ('Yoda'), Eminem ('Couch potato')...
He also does original songs in various styles of genres... "Germs"... 'Dare to be stupid' ...'Buy me a condo' ... 'The biggest ball of twine in Minnesota' 😂

Weird Al submitted his parodies to the Dr. Demento Show in the late 1970s to 1980s.
The first parody from his first album was Another One Rides the Bus, parody of Another One Bites the Dust popularized by Queen.
Michael Jackson permitted Weird Al to record Eat It, parody of Beat It. Eat It did so well that MJ permitted Weird Al to record Fat, parody of Bad.
Weird Al got so funny at music videos and parodies that famous songwriters permitted Weird Al to write parodies. Conclusion: if Weird Al asks you for permission to make a parody of your song, you made it in the music industry! 🤯
    Suggested next parody: Eat It!
Now I must Beat It! L🤣L

Weird Al has been around since the 1980s and e anyone from Madonna to Michel Jackson consider it an honor when Weird Al parodies one of their songs. Whenever possible, he will use the same set, where the same outfits, and use the same extras as the original. Check out Smerls like Morgan’s and pretty Fly for a White Guy next

the trick to this video is not only the lyrics but also how Weird Al matches the scenes to the Michael Jackson original from the back up dancers and moves, to the location, even the guy on skates has a parallel in the MJ original..

The "I got more chins than Chinatown" line is a twist on a very old joke, several decades old... the original form was "he's got more chins than a Chinese phone book"... several of the lines are just rehashed old fat jokes
